Many scientists believe our love of sugar may actually be an addiction (瘾). When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our blood and affects the parts of our brain that make us feel good. Then the good feeling 45 , leaving us wanting more. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. In this way, it is in fact an addictive drug, one that doctors recommend we all cut down on.
“It seems like every time I 46 an illness and trace (追踪) a path to the first cause, I find my way back to sugar,” says scientist Richard Johnson. One-third of adults worldwide have high blood pressure, and up to 346 million have diabetes (糖尿病). Why? “Sugar, we believe, is one of the factors, if not the major factors,” says Johnson.
Our bodies are designed to survive on very little sugar. Early humans often had very little food, so our bodies learned to be very efficient (有效率的) in storing sugar as fat. In this way, we had 47 stored for when there was no food. But today, most people have more than enough. So the very thing that once saved us may now be killing us.
So what is the 48 ? It’s obvious that we need to eat less sugar. The trouble is, in today’s world, it’s extremely difficult to avoid. From breakfast cereals to after-dinner desserts, our foods are increasingly filled with it. Some manufacturers (制造商) even use sugar to replace taste in foods. However, they are advertised as 49 in fat. So while the foods seem healthier, large amounts of sugar are often added.
But some people are fighting against sugar and trying to create a healthier environment. Many schools are replacing sugary desserts with healthier options, like fruit. Other schools are trying to encourage exercise by building facilities like walking tracks 50 students and others in the community can exercise. The battle has not yet been lost.

If you are excited by solving puzzles, unlocking secrets and working as a team against the clock, then an escape room (密室逃脱) experience is perfect for you.
There are lots of escape room businesses around Shanghai. As a family or a group of friends, you enter a room through one door. You must s 51 for keys, find tools or clues (线索), and try to move forward so you can escape through the exit door. You might go through several different rooms and maybe even secret tunnels that you find.
Escape rooms often have a time l 52 of 60 minutes to solve all the problems. If you can’t finish it in the time given, you will f 53 in your task—but you will still have had an amazing time trying. Staff will offer clues if you get stuck. They watch the rooms on cameras and know how you are getting on.
One of the best things is that all escape rooms have special theme (主题). Choose something you will find exciting, s 54 as magic adventures, space journeys, aliens, sport. You can also pick whatever else is available at the escape room business. Perhaps you will wear special clothes to m 55 the theme you choose. Wearing glasses and a white lab coat while trying to solve science-based puzzles, for example, adds even more fun. You may also see staff members in the rooms acting as characters to offer some advice or t 56 .
If you can’t go along to an escape room in r 57 life, look for an online escape room experience. From the comfort of your home, you can begin a virtual (虚拟的) journey through the games, try to answer the questions and deal with the tests that will get you to the end.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题):( 12分)
A small, white envelope stuck among the branches of our Christmas tree and it has been there for the past ten years.
It all began because my husband Justin hated Christmas—oh, not the true meaning of Christmas. Overspending was one thing, but compared to the difficult experience of choosing gifts—running around at the last minute to get a tie for Uncle Harry and a pair of gloves for Grandma…, spending money is nothing. I felt too tired to think of any special gifts.
Knowing Justin felt the same way, I decided one year not to buy the usual shirts, sweaters, ties and so on. I reached for something special just for Justin. The idea came in an unusual way.
Our son Kevin, who was 12 that year, was wrestling(摔跤) at the junior level at the school he attended; and shortly before Christmas, there was a match against a team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church. These youngsters, dressed in such worn-out shoes that shoe strings (鞋带) seemed to be the only thing holding them together, while our boys were in their blue and gold uniforms and new wrestling shoes.
As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets (头盔) to protect their ears. Well, our boys won the game.
Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly, “I wish just one of them could have won,” he said. “They have a lot of potential (潜力), but losing like this could take the heart out of them.” Justin loved kids—all kids, and he knew them, having coached little league football and baseball. That’s when the idea for his present came. That afternoon, I went to a local sporting goods store and bought different kinds of wrestling helmets and shoes. I sent them to inner-city church without leaving my name.
On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me. His smile was the brightest thing about Christmas that year and since then the envelope has become the tradition of our Christmas.
58.How long has the white envelope been in the writer’s home?
59.What’s the main reason for Justin to hate Christmas?
is the main reason.
60.Could the youngsters in the team sponsored (赞助) by an inner-city church buy a helmet?
61.How did Justin feel about the team’s failure?
62.Why did the writer send gifts to the inner-city church without leaving her name?
63.According to the last paragraph, what is their tradition at Christmas? And how do you like their tradition at Christmas?
VI. Writing(作文)(共20分)
64.Write at least 60 words according to the given situation (根据以下情境写一篇不少于60个词的短文,标点符号不占格)

【答案】58.For the past ten years. 59.The difficult experience of choosing gifts. 60.No, they couldn’t. 61.He felt sad. 62.Because she wanted it to be a special gift for Justin. 63.Their tradition is placing the white envelope on the Christmas tree. It’s warm and meaningful as it carries love and kindness.

60.根据“As the match began, I was shocked to see that the other team were wrestling without wearing helmets to protect their ears.”可知,他们没戴头盔,因为他们没钱买装备。故填No, they couldn’t.
61.根据“Justin, seated beside me, shook his head sadly”可知,Justin感到很难过。故填He felt sad.
62.根据“On Christmas Eve, I placed the envelope on the tree, the note inside telling Justin what I had done and that was his gift from me.”可知,作者给孩子们买护具,是因为她想给Justin一个特别的圣诞礼物。故填Because she wanted it to be a special gift for Justin.
63.根据“since then the envelope has become the tradition of our Christmas”可知,从那时起,在圣诞树上挂白色信封就成了她家的传统;第二个问题是开放性问题,言之有理即可。故填Their tradition is placing the white envelope on the Christmas tree. It’s warm and meaningful as it carries love and kindness.

【答案】One possible version
Dear Principal,
As a Grade 9 student, I’d like to suggest enhancing our school environment by creating more green spaces. Currently, our playground is mostly concrete, which looks dull and offers little shade.
I propose planting trees and flowers around the field and building wooden benches under them. This would not only beautify our campus but also provide students with relaxing spots to read or chat during breaks. After long classes, when students feel tired, fresh air and natural scenery can reduce stress and boost concentration.
A greener school would make us prouder of our campus and promote environmental awareness.
Thank you for considering this idea!
Sincerely,
Li Hua
