Here are four standout sci-fi novels that provide perfect gateways into the genre. Show Us Who You Are Show Us Who You Are by Elle McNicoll presents a stimulating look at technology. When the main character, Cora, is given a chance to connect with her comatose (昏迷的) friend through a 3-D image, she sees it as a blessing. However, she soon uncovers the tech company’s dark secrets and dangerous agendas. This novel is more than a simple mystery; it’s an exploration of what it means to be human in a digital age and the importance of challenging powerful institutions. 5 Worlds Series For those who appreciate visual storytelling, the 5 Worlds Series by Mark Siegel and Alexis Siegel is a masterpiece. This great story, described as Star Wars meets The Last Airbender, follows Oona Lee and her companions as they race to light the beacons (灯塔) of five planets to save their universe from extinction. With amazing artwork, the series is a wild ride across unique worlds, featuring a determined heroine who must unlock her potential and learn to lead. Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone by Tae Keller is a powerful combination of sci-fi mystery and realistic fiction. The story begins when Mallory’s neighbor, an eager alien hunter, disappears. As Mallory investigates the truth using clues from a journal, the story explores deep themes of middle school. It’s a sensitive and tense exploration of how we treat those who are different and the secrets we keep from others and ourselves. When You Reach Me The Newbery Medal-winning When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a master class in complex storytelling. Set in the 1970s New York City, it follows sixth-grader Miranda as she receives mysterious notes that seem to predict the future. The novel brilliantly mixes elements of time travel with a touching coming-of-age story about friendship, family, and the connections that shape our lives, keeping readers engaged until the final, satisfying revelation. 21. What do Oona Lee and her companions try to save? A. Their universe. B. A comatose friend. C. A tech company. D. Middle school students. 22. Which book focuses on a character using a journal for investigation? A. Show Us Who You Are. B. 5 Worlds Series. C. Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone. D. When You Reach Me. 23. What can we learn about When You Reach Me? A. It has amazing artwork. B. It wins the Newbery Medal. C. It focuses on alien hunting. D. It tells of a missing neighbor. B It was just after lunchtime service in a restaurant. The heat was unbearable and I was standing on a ladder and cleaning the hood (抽油烟机) blackened by cooking smoke. Despite my gloves, the chemicals caused superficial burns on my hands, and I felt a sharp pain as sweat went down my face. At that moment, I realized I couldn’t keep doing such jobs for the rest of my life. I needed a career I was passionate about—and I’d been crazy about fishing since my childhood, when my older brother would take me to catch trout (鳟鱼). I grew up in a large working-class family and left school at 19. For several years, I was an unknown worker, sanding floors in shopping malls in the middle of the night and cleaning pest-infested kitchens. I took pride in doing difficult, invisible jobs—but something still stirred (搅动) in me whenever I went fishing. I was 24 when I felt I needed a shift. So after completing a science-based diploma (文凭) for adults, I started a biology degree at university, sustaining myself with the money I’d saved while working. My first term was cruel. I failed physics, biostatistics, and even introductory ecology, but I was determined to pursue my dream and gradually my grades improved. Eventually, I got into a master’s program in biodiversity management. During the first week, my supervisor handed me a paper on brown trout in the Kerguelen Islands. I was ecstatic. “They’re paying me to research salmonid!” I told my parents that night. For the first time, I felt like I’d truly made it. I credit the hours I spent cleaning kitchens for giving me the discipline, patience, precision, and will to push on as I struggled through those first years of studying. I’m now in the middle of a Ph.D. studying how climate change is affecting arctic char (鲑). I’m living a dream, but I also know it takes much hard work to get here. Every day, I still feel the same desire to learn and improve. 24. What motivated the author to seek a career change? A. The low income from his former jobs. B. The extreme physical discomfort at work. C. The sudden return of his previous interest. D. The encouragement from his family members. 25. What can be inferred about the author at university? A. He adjusted quickly to academic demands. B. He prioritized earning money over studying. C. He initially struggled but persisted. D. He changed his major based on his hobby. 26. What does the underlined word “ecstatic” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Pleased. B. Determined. C. Puzzled. D. Annoyed. 27. How did the author’s early jobs influence his later study? A. They taught him practical scientific skills. B. They provided financial support for his research. C. They inspired him to choose environmental studies. D. They developed personal qualities useful for his learning. C A new study from Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health reported that children experienced far fewer mental health diagnoses (诊断) when their schools reopened during the global health emergency. Earlier research consistently showed that children struggled emotionally during the global health emergency. Some studies suggested that returning to classrooms offered important support, but many of those investigations (调查) relied on small samples or self-reported experiences. To produce a more comprehensive picture, the research team examined health diagnoses and spending information for 185,735 children between the age of 5 and 18 years from March 2020 through June 2021. The dataset indicated whether a child received mental health treatment related to anxiety or depression. Participants lived in 24 counties and 224 school districts across California, a state where school closures lasted longer than those in most of the country and opening timelines varied widely. These differences created a natural opportunity to compare outcomes. The study documented an overall rise in mental health diagnoses during the emergency, increasing from 2.8% to 3.5%. However, children who returned to in-person school were significantly less likely to receive new diagnoses than children whose schools stayed closed. By the ninth month after opening, the chance of being diagnosed with a mental health condition had dropped by 43% compared with the period before opening. Health care spending reflected a similar pattern. Nine months after schools reopened, non-drug medical spending related to mental health was 11% lower, and spending on psychiatric (精神病的) medications was 8% lower. Girls saw greater improvements than boys over the same period. The research team outlined several possible reasons for the mental health challenges children experienced while schools were closed. These included limited social interaction, disturbed sleep routines, more screen time, poorer dietary patterns, academic struggles, or family stress linked to economic hardship. “Our results provide solid evidence to parents, educators, and policymakers that in-person schools play a crucial role in kids’ well-being,” said senior author Rita Hamad, professor of social epidemiology. “Policies should focus not only on infection control, but also on the mental health of children.” 28. Why did the Harvard research team choose California? A. Its opening policy can produce detailed data. B. It owned a comprehensive healthcare system. C. Its spending budget was uniform. D. It had the shortest school closures. 29. What was a finding of the Harvard study? A. Health care spending increased largely. B. Boys showed greater mental health improvements. C. Reopening schools reduced mental health diagnoses. D. School closures improved children’s academic performance. 30. Which of the following was not listed as a mental health challenge? A. Poor sleep routines. B. Rising social interaction. C. Family financial stress. D. Disordered dietary habits. 31. What does Professor Hamad suggest doing for future policies? A. Putting academic catch-up programs in the first place. B. Ensuring the emotional resources accessible to children. C. Keeping schools closed longer to ensure infection control. D. Balancing safety measures and children’s mental well-being. D Fabio De Leo, an assistant professor in the University of Victoria’s (UVic) Department of Biology, co-led a long-term experiment off the coast of British Columbia (BC). The study placed humpback whale bones on the deep ocean floor and monitored them for signs of life. After years of observation, researchers didn’t find zombie worms (僵尸蠕虫), despite their well-known role in decomposing (分解) whale bones and supporting deep-sea food webs. Zombie worms are unusual creatures. They lack a mouth and digestive system, yet they survive by their root-like structures into bone. Inside those roots live microbes (微生物) that get nutrients, which then feed the worms. Because of this unique role, zombie worms are considered ecosystem engineers, helping recycle nutrients and create conditions that allow other species to move in. Over 10 years of underwater camera footage failed to capture any zombie worm. In scientific terms, this finding is known as a negative result, but it can be just as meaningful as a positive one. “This was a remarkable observation in such a long-term experiment,” De Leo says. He adds that the absence may be linked to unusually low oxygen levels at the study site. The whale bones were placed in Barkley Canyon, nearly a thousand meters below the Pacific Ocean surface. This area lies within a naturally low-oxygen zone and along migration routes used by humpback and grey whales. When whales die from natural causes or human-related threats like ship strikes, their bodies sink to the seafloor. These events create “whale falls,” which normally provide a sudden increase of food that supports rich biodiversity. The lack of zombie worms at Barkley Canyon suggests that expanding oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the northeast Pacific and beyond may be disturbing these ecosystems. If the “bone eater” is missing, the chain reaction can affect many other species. Without zombie worms to break down bones and kick-start the ecological succession process, fewer organisms may be able to access nutrients stored in whale remains. 32. What is a role of zombie worms in deep-sea ecosystems? A. Competing with other species. B. Producing oxygen. C. Breaking down whale bones. D. Driving away microbes. 33. What probably caused the disappearance of zombie worms according to the text? A. Human activities. B. The expanding oxygen minimum zones. C. Less deep-sea food. D. The reduction of low oxygen. 34. What can we know from the last paragraph? A. The formation of the food chain. B. The risk of species loss. C. The failed function of the ecosystem. D. The process of finding bones. 35. What could be a suitable title for the text? A. Deep-Sea “Ecosystem Engineers” Are Missing B. Zombie Worms Are Rich in the Deep Sea C. Oxygen Zones Expand Due to Whale Deaths D. Whale bones Attract New Deep-Sea Species We all know that protecting our eyes is important. However, many students tend to ignore the warning signs of eye tiredness. ____36____ Nowadays, eye overuse has become a very common phenomenon. ____37____ It usually results from not following the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes), studying in poor lighting conditions, holding books too close to your eyes, or not blinking (眨眼) enough while focusing. What happens when you don’t give your eyes enough rest? In the short term, it can cause eye strain (疲劳) and headaches. The discomfort associated with eye overuse can lead to difficulty concentrating, reduced learning efficiency, and a lack of interest in reading. ____38____ Such discomfort typically includes dry eyes, blurred vision, and increased sensitivity to light. In the long term, it can potentially worsen nearsightedness. While eye strain can be troubling, the good news is that you can prevent most of these problems. ____39____ Specifically, start practicing the 20-20-20 rule today, which may be simple enough to help your eyes relax and maintain good eyesight. After you’ve formed this good habit, make sure you’re also maintaining proper reading distance and lighting. If you drove a car without ever checking the engine, you’d eventually break down, right? The same goes for your eyes. Just like a car, your eyes need proper care and regular maintenance to keep functioning well — not only when you use them intensively during study sessions but throughout your entire daily life. ____40____ A. Therefore, be cautious during your study time. B. The first thing you can do is develop good habits. C. You may also experience physical eye discomfort. D. Eye overuse means not giving your eyes enough rest. E. In fact, ignoring eye discomfort can lead to serious problems. F. Wearing proper glasses is essential if you have vision problems. G. So, give them proper rest, nutritious support, and professional care when needed. One afternoon, I was stuck 1.5 hours away from home with an overheated car. I fought the urge to burst out, “Not if I can help it.” Hosting twenty people meant endless cooking, cleaning, and stress — while spending the holiday at my sister’s house promised a relaxed day with no responsibilities. But her sincere look made a flat “no” impossible. “Maybe,” I replied, my way of avoiding her nonstop, lawyer-like debates that always turned “maybe” into “yes”. “YES!” she screamed, waving her hands as if she’d just gotten really lucky. “Why are you celebrating? It’s just a ‘maybe’,” I smiled. “Because ‘maybe’ from you always becomes ‘yes’,” she said with unshakable confidence. She had me there — her determination had worn me down more times than I could count. Over the next week, I made a mental list of reasons to visit my sister: no grocery runs, no deep cleaning, no slaving over a hot stove. Then something unexpected happened — I won a turkey at the YMCA contest. I joked that my daughter must have arranged it on purpose, but her excited “YES!” when I told her confirmed her certainty: we were hosting. “Why do you want this so badly?” I asked. “I want to decorate, bake, and have everyone here together,” she said simply. Her excitement was incredibly uplifting, but I decided to test her resolve. “Okay, but you’re in charge of grocery shopping, cleaning, and helping with every step,” I said. Again came that overjoyed “YES!” and wave of her hands. I smiled, thinking she had no idea what she was signing up for. But I was wrong. That night, I found her planning in a notebook: decorations, a grocery list, and a cooking timeline. “I got Grandma’s pie recipe and Mrs. Carter’s turkey tips,” she said, holding up a printout. Her commitment surprised me. Throughout every step of the Thanksgiving preparations, my daughter threw herself into the work. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ By the time guests arrived, the house smelled of roasted turkey. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高二英语 考生注意: 1. One possible version: Throughout every step of the Thanksgiving preparations, my daughter threw herself into the work. On the pre-Thanksgiving grocery run, she moved through the crowded aisles with a sunny smile, crossing items off the list without a complaint. When we cleaned the house from top to bottom, she sang along to music, turning boring tasks into a game. And when we spent hours cooking — peeling potatoes, stuffing the turkey, baking pies — her enthusiasm never faded. Even when she took out the garbage or washed piles of dirty dishes, she did it with enthusiasm that spread to everyone around her. By the time guests arrived, the house smelled of roasted turkey. My daughter’s decorations — paper turkeys, shining lights, and handwritten place cards — filled the room with warmth. As we sat around the table, I looked at her — tired but smiling broadly, proud of what we’d accomplished together. All my anxiety had disappeared; hosting wasn’t a chore — it was fun, thanks to her. The best part wasn’t the meal or the praise — it was watching her light up, knowing I’d shared something special with her.
