A Chinese car brand wanted to sell cars in Brazil. It used green and yellow, the national colors of Brazil, on its car and logo.
Guess: Did it succeed or fail?
It was very successful in Brazil.
Why did it work so well?
Green and yellow are the colors of Brazil's flag. They stand for Brazil and make local people feel warm and close. The brand showed its respect for Brazilian culture.
A Chinese company named its sofa White Elephant and sold it in the US.But nobody buys it.
Why?
White elephants are rare and beautiful in China, but in the US, it means something useless.
Many words of colors have different meanings in different countries. That is because they are influenced by different cultures.
Oh, I get it.
Same color, different feelings
Color In China In Western Countries Example of Misunderstanding
White Mourning, Purity (wedding) Wedding, Purity Chinese bride = red; American bride = white. Both are “correct”!
Red Luck, Happiness Danger, Love, Anger Red logo = lucky (CN) vs. “stop” or debt (West).
Green Health, Environment Jealousy, Inexperience “Green with envy” – confusing for Chinese learners.
Yellow Royal (ancient), Porn (modern) Coward, Caution “Yellow-bellied” (coward) vs. 黄色电影 (adult film).

This brings us to our Culture Link. The same color can have very different meanings in different cultures. For example, white is for mourning in China but for weddings in the West. Red is for luck in China but for danger in the West. Understanding these differences is crucial.
Look at the cases: a Chinese car company succeeded in Brazil by using the national colors, green and yellow. This shows the power of cultural awareness. Conversely, branding something a "white elephant" in the West is a major mistake.
Now, let's discuss: If you were selling a green pen in the US, what would you need to be careful about? Think about the table!

Understanding culture is also about respecting others. This is our Teen Skill for today. Look at the difference between respectful and non-respectful communication. Instead of saying "That's stupid," we can say "That's one idea." We have a list of useful expressions to help us agree and disagree politely. Now, let's practice this in a mini-activity. In your groups, choose one word for your poster using these respectful expressions.
