When I was in middle school, my family moved to a new town. I felt very lonely because I didn’t know anyone there. Every day after school, I would go straight home and stay in my room.
One day, my mother came home with a small box. “Open it,” she said with a smile. Inside the box was a little dog with big brown eyes. He looked up at me and wagged his tail.
“This is Max,” my mother said. “He is your new friend.”
At first, I wasn’t sure how to take care of a dog. But soon, Max and I became best friends. Every morning, he would jump on my bed to wake me up. After school, he would wait by the door for me. When I felt sad, he would sit beside me and put his head on my knee.
Taking Max for walks in the neighborhood helped me meet new people. Other dog owners would stop to talk to me. I began to make friends with kids in my school, too. One of them, Tom, lived just two houses away from us. He also had a dog, and we often walked our dogs together.
Looking back, I realize that Max did more than just keep me company. He helped me come out of my shell and become a more outgoing person. I will always be grateful to him.
4. Why did the writer feel lonely after moving to a new town?
A. Because he missed his old school.
B. Because he didn’t like his new house.
C. Because he had no friends there.
D. Because his parents were too busy.
5. What did Max do when the writer felt sad?
A. He jumped on the bed.
B. He waited by the door.
C. He sat beside him quietly.
D. He woke him up in the morning.
6. How did Max help the writer make new friends?
A. By going to school with him.
B. By helping him with his homework.
C. By giving him chances to talk to people.
D. By inviting other dogs to his house.
7. What does the phrase “come out of my shell” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. To become more confident and outgoing.
B. To leave home and go outside.
C. To stop using a mobile phone.
D. To move to another town.
C
Have you ever noticed that you feel more alert and focused after playing sports or running around? It turns out that physical exercise does more than just keep your body healthy — it also helps your brain work better.
Scientists have found that when we exercise, our heart pumps more blood to our brain. This brings more oxygen and nutrients, which help brain cells grow and communicate with each other. Exercise also releases chemicals called endorphins (内啡肽), which make us feel happier and less stressed. A study of teenagers showed that those who exercised for at least 30 minutes a day did better on tests than those who were inactive.
But how much exercise is enough? Experts suggest that teenagers should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day. This can include running, swimming, playing basketball, or even brisk walking. You don’t have to do it all at once — short bursts of activity throughout the day work just as well.
Some students worry that exercise will take time away from studying. However, research shows the opposite. Regular exercise improves concentration and memory, so you may actually finish your homework faster. Taking a 10-minute break to stretch or walk around can help you solve problems more creatively.
So next time you feel stuck on a math problem or tired while reading, try getting up and moving your body. A little exercise might be the best study tool you never knew you had.
8. What happens to our brain when we exercise?
A. It receives less oxygen.
B. It gets more blood and nutrients.
C. It stops growing new cells.
D. It produces fewer chemicals.
9. According to the study, how did active teenagers perform on tests compared to inactive ones?
A. They performed worse.
B. They performed about the same.
C. They performed better.
D. The study did not compare them.
10. What do experts suggest about exercise for teenagers?
A. At least 60 minutes of exercise per day.
B. At least 30 minutes of exercise per week.
C. Exercise only on weekends.
D. No need for regular exercise.
11. What is the author’s advice for students who have trouble solving a problem?
A. Give up and ask for help.
B. Sit still and think harder.
C. Get up and move their body.
D. Eat something sweet first.
D
In today’s world, it seems that everyone is always looking at a screen. Whether it’s a smartphone, a tablet, or a computer, screens are everywhere. But is this a good thing?
Some people argue that technology has made our lives better. We can now communicate with people on the other side of the world in seconds. We can find any information we need with just a few clicks. We can work from home, take online classes, and even see a doctor through a video call. There is no doubt that technology brings us many benefits.
However, others worry about the negative effects of too much screen time. They point out that many people, especially young people, spend too much time online and not enough time in the real world. This can lead to problems such as loneliness, anxiety, and poor social skills. When we spend all our time looking at screens, we miss out on real-life experiences — like having a conversation with a friend, going for a walk in nature, or playing a sport.
So, what is the answer? Should we throw away all our devices and go back to a simpler way of living? Most experts say no. Instead, they suggest that we need to learn how to use technology wisely. This means setting limits on screen time, taking regular breaks, and making sure to spend quality time with family and friends in person.
As a famous scientist once said, “Technology is a good servant but a bad master.” It’s up to us to decide who is in control — us or our screens.
12. What is one benefit of technology mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. It helps people sleep better.
B. it allows us to find information easily.
C. It makes people more active.
D. It improves our social skills naturally.
13. What problem can too much screen time cause according to the passage?
A. People may feel lonely and worried.
B. People may lose their jobs.
C. People may forget how to read.
D. People may have fewer friends online.
14. What does the scientist’s quote “Technology is a good servant but a bad master” mean?
A. Technology should be used to serve us, not control us.
B. Technology is only good for work, not for fun.
C. Technology is more powerful than humans.
D. Technology is becoming more and more expensive.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage people to stop using technology.
B. To discuss both the good and bad sides of screen time.
C. To prove that smartphones are harmful to health.
D. To explain how to use social media properly.

【答案】
Recently, I have conducted a survey on weekly outside reading time among my classmates. The result shows that nearly 60% of students spend less than one hour reading every week, and only 10% of them enjoy over two hours of reading per week.
The main reason is that most students are burdened with heavy homework, leaving little spare time for reading. Besides, many students prefer entertaining social media or video games to reading after class.
From my point of view, teachers should cut down daily homework to leave more reading time for us. Meanwhile, we should develop a good reading habit to improve ourselves.
