Students and teachers,as well as some parents, sit on two wooden benches running the length of
the hallway of their school. They take tums reading from the Ohen:ton Karihwatehkwen, which
translates from the Mohawk language to "Words before all else."These words, which express
appreciation for all life forms, mark the day's start at the Akwesasne Freedom School.
But the 60-odd students here wouldn't understand these lessons if it weren't for this little
schoolhouse at the United States-Canada border."This makes us who we are,and if we don't have
this, who are we going to be?"asks teacher Kawehnokwiiosthe, whose name in English means "She
makes the island beautiful."

funds from either government, says Alvera Sargent, who heads the nonprofit Friends of the Akwesasne
Freedom School and is one of the last first-language speakers of Mohawk.

Summer in New England means fried seafood and oysters ()freshly taken out of their
shells. But there's a problem. Those empty shells usually end up in a garbage bin instead of back in
the water, where they play a key role in the oyster life cycle.Oyster larvae (attach to shells,
growing into adults and forming reefs that improve water quality and create habitat for other sea life.
Two men in Connecticut are working to fix that. They've started a statewide program to collect
abandoned shells from local restaurants, dry them and return them to Long Island Sound for restoration
projects."We fill that missing piece,"said Tim Macklin,co-founder of Collective Oyster Recycling
Restoration.
The Connecticut group is smaller but growing. In 2024,it collected about 375,000 pounds of
shells and is on track to surpass 400,000 pounds this year. What sets their effort apart is that it's
essentially a two-man operation.Tim Macklin and Todd Koehnke,who founded the project,do most
of the day-to-day work.Mr Macklin and Mr Koehnke became involved in oyster shell recycling about a
decade ago.In 2023,they secured $400,000 in state funding, allowing them to leave their jobs and
invest in their initiative.
Collective Oyster Recycling Restoration supplies restaurants with containers for abandoned
shells, which are picked up weekly. The shells are transported to a storage site and sit for at least six
months to kill harmful bacteria. When the weather warms, the shells are retumed to restoration sites.
Bryan Hurlburt, the state's agriculture director, said it was too early to measure the impact.
Still,he's optimistic about the program's potential to support the environment and the long-term

B.It may have a far-reaching impact on the environment.
C.It may involve lots of customers in shell recycling.
D.It will become the main way to restore oyster populations.

Solar cells are an important part of the green transition ()and more structures and roof
areas throughout the world are being equipped with the power-generating panels. But their size still
limits their use.Now a group of scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)has
developed a method to produce very light solar cells that can be mounted on anything.
The solar cells are made from nano-materials in the form of a kind of electronic ink.Because they
are so thin and light, the solar cells can be placed onto many different surfaces:integrated into a boat
sail to supply power on the ocean, glued onto tents in disaster camps,or even placed on the wings of
drones (to extend their battery life and allow them to be airborne for longer periods. The
solar cells are thinner than human hair, weighing around 1/100th as much as conventional solar
panels, and generating some 18 times more power per kilogram.
One challenge that scientists are trying to solve before the solar panels can be ready for mass
production is how to provide protection to the solar cells against oxygen and moisture ()
Traditional solar cells are protected by glass, but adding a layer of glass would remove many of the
current advantages of the new wafer-thin cells,so scientists are working on finding an alternative way
to protect them against the elements.
Australia is also doing research in similar areas. The Centre for Organic Electronics at the
University of Newcastle has pioneered the development of water-based solar paint with which long
sheets of flexible solar panels can be printed at a relatively low cost.In The Charge Around
Australia'project last year, their scientists spent three months driving around Australia in a Tesla
recharged entirely from rolls of solar panels kept in the boot and then spread out near the vehicle to
charge it.
32.What is a challenge facing traditional solar cells?
A.Size restriction.
B.Structure complexity.
C.Weather dependence.
D.Geographical limitation.
33.How do the new solar cells outperform traditional ones?
A.They can last longer.
伯乐马·英语押题(一)·第5页(共8页)
B.They are diverse in form.
C.They can be mass-produced.
D.They are more flexible with a larger capacity.
34.What factor may make glass inappropriate as a protective layer?
A.Its breakability.
B.Its poor energy absorption.
C.Its weight.
D.Its low cost-efficiency.
35.Why does the author mention the Australian research?
A.To highlight the breakthrough in a charging project.
B.To emphasise global innovation in solar technology.
C.To show the advancement of water-based solar paint.
D.To represent the application of solar panels in vehicles

Over the years,April Fools'Day has become larger than life, especially with social media
spreading jokes at a rapid rate.36 These jokes may be entertaining,a bit confusing, and at
times causing unexpected chaos.
37 This is a million-dollar question and one that is not easily answered.First,it is worth
noting that people have different opinions about what is humorous. It is influenced by the context, the
culture, and subjective perspectives ()meaning that it is not consistent across populations.
However, there are aspects of jokes that may determine if they are funny.
If a joke is violating (a norm or rule of some kind,it is more likely to be perceived as
funny.Such violations need to be harmless.38 What determines whether it is harmless is linked
to how bad something is and how far removed we are from it.Serious events may be considered funnier
over time, while injuring a toe-a minor violation-would lose its comedic effect over time.
Interestingly, people have been found to be more likely to laugh when they are near others
compared to when they are alone.39 This suggests that laughter may be a social signal rather
than a direct response to humour.
Jokes may seem insignificant but can serve social functions like managing strong emotions such as
embarrassment and showing bonding.40 In cross-cultural settings, jokes can be easily
misunderstood.Couple this with the fact that humour requires a violation and it can be a risky
strategy, especially as perceptions of appropriateness are subjective. Thus,it has been suggested that
jokes should be used carefully.
A.So what makes something funny?
B.However,humour can also be risky.
C.When better to look at the psychology of jokes?
D.Otherwise they can be perceived to be unpleasant.
E.Children,in particular, laugh more when they are with others.
F.Risky jokes may also be seen differently by people over time.
G.Every April 1,companies,individuals and papers present jokes.

that day.
Each summer,Elizabeth's brother David and his friends spent time on the beach.Elizabeth and
her friend Nicole asked him to take them, but he always refused, saying they were too young. This

But on the day of the trip,Nicole got a cold..“Ahh-choo!I can't go.Ahhhhhhh-choo!”Nicole

help Nicole get better soon,Elizabeth had an idea:chicken soup!Whenever she had a cold,Mom
would make her some.So Elizabeth decided to make a pot for Nicole-she hoped this warm soup
would not only help Nicole feel better, but also cheer her up a little.
With a sense of purpose,Elizabeth rode her bike to the store despite the heat. She used her

chicken into pieces. As she rode back home, she imagined how happy Nicole would be when she
tasted the soup.
Once home,Elizabeth started making the soup. She didn't want to bother Mom,so she decided
to do it on her own-after all,she had watched Mom make it before. She took out a big pot, filled it
with some water, then washed the chicken pieces and put them into the pot.She turned on the stove

When Mom learned Elizabeth was making chicken soup, she was surprised. She asked why
Elizabeth wanted to make the soup.Elizabeth told her about Nicole's cold and her wish to help her
recover.Mom's surprise tumed into pride. She showed Elizabeth when to add the ginger and onions
and how much of each she should put in,and taught her to adjust the stove heat so the soup wouldn't
boil over.Soon the kitchen filled with a warm, delicious smell.Elizabeth watched happily as her mom
added a few finishing touches, saying,"This will taste perfect for Nicole."
Elizabeth brought the soup to Nicole's house. When Nicole opened the door, her eyes lit up.
Elizabeth handed her the container, and Nicole tasted a bit right away."It's great!"she said, her
voice sounding clearer. Then Elizabeth watched Nicole enjoying each spoonful.Nicole was really
moved, saying it was so kind of her to make it.Even though they hadn't made it to the beach,
Elizabeth felt a wave of warmth inside-this day turned out to be special too, because she had brought
comfort and joy to her friend.

started to teach Elizabeth to make the soup step by step, from the proper amounts of ginger and onions
to the suitable heat level for the best taste.Under Mom's guidance,Elizabeth finally made it,and
then she stored some soup in a container.
Elizabeth brought the soup to Nicole's house. It was Nicole who opened the door, weak and pale.

have found Victoria sooner if she'd told someone about her plans.Second,if you're driving, make
sure you have enough gas.Last, learn some survival skills.
M:Yeah these skills are helpful.
W:Definitely.Well.there is Survival Skills Club I started a few months ago.So you're welcome to
join our club.

Today I'll talk about my job.I studied design at university. One day,I saw an ad for the post of
assistant stage manager in a magazine."That's what I always wanted to do,"I thought.Then I
contacted the theatre.I was lucky because the stage manager there needed an assistant. The stage
manager Mr.David is always busy.He spends his day answering questions from people-actors writers.

and everyone else who works there Mr.David tells me what actors need to do.Then it's my job as
assistant stage manager to design a suitable schedule for each actor. Most people don't understand my
job including my parents. They think it s all about moving heavy things on and off stage.Actually it
isn't!My parents want me to get a better-paid job.I like working behind the scenes. But one thing
that annoys me is how late I get off work. You know.some original schedules have to be changed
because of some emergencies.I have been an assistant for five years and I believe I'll become a stage
manager in the near future.
