B The first time my daughter, Chloe, realized I was leaving on a trip without her, she was alarmed. “Why did you even have me if you were just going to leave me behind?” she cried. I tried to tell her that someday she’d understand the appeal of travel. But as my husband, Evan, pulled her off my leg so I could leave, I wondered if my solo trips would be worth the effort of going without her. Returning home after a few days away, I felt energized and inspired. Chloe was happy to hear about my trip. But this was the age of learning about compromises (妥协). As in: “You have to wear a coat, but we’ll compromise and you can choose which one.” She told me I could keep going on trips for work — but we’d compromise: she’d come with me. When she was six, we flew to the Riviera Maya in Mexico. I was impressed by how cheerfully fearless she was when we swam in cenotes (天然井) or dived along a reef. In Fiji, nine-year-old Chloe was attracted by the compassionate (有同情心的) women chiefs we met and decided she wanted to become a leader. During a trip to Sri Lanka when she was 13, she learned how the coin flip of your birth country can affect your opportunities in life. When we finished up our travels and returned home to Vancouver for her high school education, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise to learn that our daughter had other ideas. Chloe was excited when, after months of interviews, she was awarded a place to finish high school at Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. But it was during that first airport goodbye that I realized it was my turn to be left behind. Compared to the silly 17-year-old I’d said goodbye to, the 21-year-old woman who came home from high school in Africa and, later, from university in France, seemed mature and unfamiliar. 24. How did Chloe feel the first time she realized her mum was leaving on a trip without her? A. Excited. B. Shocked. C. Confused. D. Sad. 25. What does the author want to tell in Paragraph 3? A. Chloe’s travel experiences. B. Chloe’s joy of travel. C. Chloe’s bravery during her travels. D. Chloe’s impression on travel. 26. What did Chloe do for high school education after returning home? A. Chloe got an award in high school. B. Chloe applied for a school in Africa. C. Chloe finished high school in Vancouver. D. Chloe went on travelling in Southern Africa. 27. What can we draw from the text? A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Parents are the best teachers. C. Travel shapes a person. D. Life is like a journey. C Seeing terror films is typically a harmless activity. But the fear it generates can cause the body’s fight-or-flight system-releasing chemicals into the body and causing a number of physiological responses. Our body’s fear response is actually a fantastic tool for survival in dangerous situations because it kicks in fast, makes us full of energy, heightens our focus, strengthens our muscles, and gets us ready to handle whatever is coming at us. It’s a built-in survival mechanism, which has been with us since our ancient ancestors. But even as it helped our ancient ancestors escape from tigers and keeps us out of harm today, activating the body’s fear response isn’t always a good thing. If it’s initiated too often with constant stress or frequent jump scares, it can wear our bodies down. The body’s fear response, or fight-or-flight response, always begins in the amygdala — a part of the brain’s system that’s critical for recognizing threats and processing emotions. After it detects a threat, the amygdala sends a distress signal to a command center in the brain, which tells the nervous system to release hormones and neurotransmitters Research shows that these hormones and neurotransmitters work together to quicken your breathing and to make your heart send oxygen-rich blood faster to your muscles and vital organs. This prepares the muscles and brain to rapidly set up a threat response. Indeed, when stress hormones are released too often or for long periods of time, it can wear your body down. In some people, it can lead to health issues like high blood pressure, heart problems and digestive issues, because your body is constantly in “high alarm mode”. Another consideration is that our immediate biological response to fear is the same whether we’re facing true danger — or something that only appears that way. Overexposure to jump scares can make you less sensitive to fear. So people who enjoy terror films regularly might not react as strongly to real danger because their brain gets used to these situations. 28. Why are ancient ancestors mentioned? A. To admire their quick response to fear. B. To show body’s fear response is inborn. C. To introduce tough living conditions in ancient days. D. To demonstrate how they survived the scary situations. 29. How is paragraph 3 developed? A. By listing data. B. By giving examples. C. By defining and comparing. D. By explaining and analyzing. 30. Which may be the result of watching terror films frequently? A. Getting tired of them. B. Doing good to health. C. Losing interest in other films. D. Being less sensitive to real danger. 31. Which might be the best title for the text? A. Effects of Fear on Brain and Body. B. Fight or Flight? C. An Extreme Entertainment. D. Are Terror Films Harmless? D Scientists with the BrainGate research center have developed a breakthrough brain-computer interface (BCI). The system aims to restore communication for individuals with speech disabilities caused by conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which leads to the gradual loss of mobility and speech. It uses implanted sensors to interpret brain signals when a user attempts to speak, transforming them into text that is read aloud by a computer. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on August 14, was led by David Brandman and Serge y Stavisky, faculty members at UC Davis Health. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells controlling muscle movement. BCI technology can restore communication for those affected. In this study, Casey Harrell, a 45-year-old man with ALS, regained the ability to communicate effectively within minutes of using the system. Harrell described the experience as life-changing, saying, “My past condition was so demoralizing. Not being able to communicate seems as if you were trapped. Something like this technology will help people get back into life and society.” The BrainGate clinical trial, led by Dr. Leigh Hochberg from Brown University, has made major progress in interpreting brain signals to help people with paralysis (瘫痪) communicate. In July 2023, the UC Davis team implanted a BCI device into Harrell’s brain, focusing on the left precentral gyrus, a part of the brain that controls speech. The system translates brain activity into phonemes (音素) and words, enabling real-time communication. Harrell’s BCI generated speech with a voice similar to his own, using software trained with existing voice samples of his voice before he developed ALS. This allowed him to connect with his loved ones in a deeply personal way. Over 32 weeks and 248 hours of use, the system achieved remarkable results, with 99.6% accuracy for a 50-word vocabulary in 30 minutes of training and 90.2% accuracy for a 125,000-word vocabulary after 1.4 additional training hours. “This is transformative technology,” Brandman said. “It provides hope for people who want to speak but can’t.” Dr. John Ngai, director of the NIH’s BRAIN Initiative, highlighted the milestone as a major step in restoring communication for individuals locked in by paralysis. 32. What do we know about the BrainGate BCI? A. It translates brain signals into speech. B. It is used to treat speech disabilities. C. It helps people with ALS move and speak. D. It connects brains to make computers smarter. 33. What does the underlined word “demoralizing” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Eye-opening. B. Demanding. C. Comforting. D. Discouraging. 34. Why was Harrell’s pre-ALS voice used to compose the speech? A. To enable his communication in real time. B. To improve the accuracy of speech translation. C. To make his speech emotionally meaningful. D. To help interpret his brain signals more easily. 35. What is Dr. John Ngai’s attitude towards the BrainGate BCI? A. Unclear. B. Favourable. C. Disapproving. D. Cautious. Bird-watching, or “birding”, is a very popular hobby these days — and it’s a fantastic way of getting outside and connecting with nature. ____36____ What you will need? When you start, the only thing you really need is some way of identifying the birds that you see. A good field guide will have photos, pictures and descriptions to assist you in identifying birds. Of course, you might prefer to use some apps on your phone. ____37____ Where to go? The great thing about bird-watching is that you can start just in your garden or street, or in a local park. ____38____ Unusual plants grow there, and they are also good places for different species of birds because there is lots of food and water for them and safe places where they can rest. How to observe? It’s always best to look for birds in the early morning or late afternoon, because this is when they are most active. When you see a bird, make some notes about its colour or shape before it flies away. Draw the pictures of birds and copy the songs of them. Is it alone or in a group? ____39____ How does it fly? Can you hear its call or song? Where is it — in a tree or on the ground, and in what kind of habitat? Then check your field guide or app. ____40____ Birds are always looking for predators (掠食动物), so be very quiet when you are birdwatching, and don’t wear brightly-coloured clothes that may frighten them. Never go too close to a bird, especially when it is making a nest or feeding the young. A. What is it eating? B. What to remember? C. So how can you get started? D. Make some simple observations. E. That’s why you should watch birds. F. But wetlands, perhaps, are perfect places. G. It was a summer afternoon when I was in primary school. My grandfather, noticing my growing interest in Chinese culture, invited me to his study. He carefully took out his precious calligraphy set and said, “Today, I will teach you the art of Chinese calligraphy.” At first, I found it extremely challenging. The brush seemed to have a mind of its own, and the Chinese characters that I wrote were far from the beautiful and elegant ones I had seen in books or on the wall of my grandpa’s study. My wrist would ache after just a few minutes of holding the brush, and the ink would often mess up the paper. But my grandfather was patient. He adjusted my sitting posture and guided my hand, showing me how to control the brush with just the right amount of pressure. He told me stories about famous calligraphers in Chinese history and explained the cultural significance behind each stroke (笔画). As time went on, I went abroad for my high school education. While I was engaged in my schooling, I kept practicing Chinese calligraphy for an hour or two every day. Gradually, I began to notice improvements in my writing. I didn’t feel the pain in my hand any longer and the characters became more balanced and graceful. I also started to learn about the different styles of Chinese calligraphy, such as the bold and vigorous style of Kai Shu and the flowing and dynamic style of XingShu. I was amazed by the beauty, the elegance and the rich cultural heritage embedded in each style. One day, my school held an international cultural exchange activity. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Through this experience, I realized the power of sharing. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2025~2026学年度第二学期第二阶段考试 高二英语 (试卷满分:150分,考试时间:120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? Students from different countries came together to share their cultures. I saw it as a great opportunity to share Chinese culture. I set up a small calligraphy station and demonstrated the art of Chinese calligraphy to my foreign friends. At first, they were hesitant, but as I explained the meaning and technique behind each stroke, they became more interested. Some even tried it themselves and were amazed at how difficult yet rewarding it was. Through this experience, I realized the power of sharing. By sharing my passion for Chinese calligraphy, I was able to introduce others to the beauty and depth of Chinese culture. It made me proud of my cultural roots and motivated me to continue learning and sharing. Now, I often participate in various cultural exchange activities and also use social media to share my calligraphy works and stories. I hope that through my small efforts, more people around the world will come to appreciate and love Chinese culture as I do. Hello, international friends club. can I help you?
