Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·广东大湾区·期末)
Eddie lived in a friendly town filled with music. Sharing the same passion for music, Eddie formed a band, The Stars, with his childhood friends Luis and Ruben.
One day, they received a letter inviting them to a local music festival a month away. Excited, they decided to practise separately every day and then together once a week. But deep down, Eddie worried about their show because of Ruben, the guitarist. Although Ruben was a quick learner, he didn’t like to practise on his own at home. As a result, he often made a lot of mistakes due to lack of practice. This was a big problem for the band.
One week later, as scheduled, they gathered at the drummer Luis’s house for group practice. But they had only played a few lines when Ruben started making mistakes. “Sorry. I ... I just ...” Ruben tried to make an excuse.
“You just haven’t been practising again. You are always like this! We need to practise more; we are running out of time.” Luis’s face turned red with anger. Ruben also shouted back. Both boys stood locking eyes, full of tension. Eddie broke up the argument and calmed them down. He turned to Ruben, asking why he didn’t play at home. “I don’t like to play music on my own,” Ruben confessed (坦白). “My guitar sounds lonely by itself. You know I have trouble focusing on things.”
That night, Eddie’s father asked how band practice was going. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Eddie told him what had happened, saying they were considering replacing Ruben. His dad listened quietly, and then offered a simple suggestion, “Instead of practising the same song alone, why not figure out what helps Ruben focus?” Not wanting to lose Ruben as a band member or as a friend, Eddie began to think about it.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·湖北黄冈·期末)
The long-awaited school arts festival was just around the corner, filling the campus with an air of excitement and anticipation. Our class had worked tire y to prepare a brilliant textbook drama, hoping to amaze the audience with our performance. Every afternoon, we gathered in the classroom for rehearsals, our voices echoing through the halls. Our cooperation was becoming increasingly harmonious with each passing day.
With scripts (剧本) in hand and enthusiasm in our hearts, we practiced diligently, our laughter mixing with the sound of hurried footsteps and dramatic recitations. Lucy, with her thorough attention to detail, adjusted the props (道具) repeatedly, ensuring every layout was perfect. Tom, his fingers flying across the laptop keyboard, fine-tuned the background music, while I carefully noted down stage directions, my pen scratching against the paper. But the biggest surprise was Jack — usually quiet and reserved, he was transformed into a charming actor on stage, his voice rich with emotion, his expressions so vivid that they drew thunderous applause from the rest of us.
However, an accident t struck on a sunny weekend afternoon. While playing football with friends, Jack twisted his ankle badly, the sharp pain shooting up his leg as he collapsed onto the grass. By Monday, he arrived at school on crutches (拐杖), his right foot wrapped with a thick white cast, his face shadowed with frustration. The doctor’s words were final: three weeks of rest, meaning he would miss the performance entirely — the very performance he had poured his heart into.
Sitting alone in the corner of the classroom, Jack stared blankly at his script, his head hanging low.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二下·湖北武汉·期末)
We sometimes take our loved ones’ concern for granted and show our worst mood to the family. During my growth, an experience in senior high school stood out in my memory.
As a taxi driver, my dad drove through chaotic streets with heavy traffic. Sometimes he had to deal with rude passengers and struggle with thin income. Despite these, he never complained. Dad was devoted to our family and cared much about us. The sunflower keychain I had given him as a Father’s Day gift in fifth grade had long lost its shine. Yet he had it attached to his leather belt everywhere he went. Every day, he simply headed out early in his worn-out uniform with two patches (补丁) and returned late with a tired but warm smile. When we joked about his “fashionable patches”, he’d laugh and say, “These are my medals of honor!”
As I entered senior high school, my world became overwhelming. Math problems danced in my head. My grades didn’t improve but even declined. School pressures skyrocketed. Even small things would set me off. Dad’s daily “How’s school today?” felt like another weight on my back. I was mean to his inquiries, even though I knew he meant well.
One day after a frustrating exam, I returned home, my backpack strap (肩带) cutting into my shoulder. Dad was calculating the taxi bills then. “Hey,” he said, with a smile on his face, “How is …”
“STOP IT!” The words exploded out of me. “You’re always in my business! Can’t you just...leave me ALONE?”
He froze. The pen he was holding rolled off the table. His face fell, as if I’d thrown cold water on him. Then he stood up slowly and walked to his room. The door shut softly—not a slam (砰地关上), just a quiet click—that somehow hurt me worse.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二下·山东济南·期末)
My Dad, Matt, lost his job and when Christmas came, we had no money at all. On Christmas Eve, Dad took me into our yard. I was five that year and I sat next to Dad and we looked up at the sky, “Pick out your favorite star,” Dad said. He told me I could have one star for keeps. He said it was my Christmas present.
“You can’t give me a star! No one owns the stars.” “That’s right, Betty. No one else owns them. You just have to claim it before anyone else does.”
I looked up to the stars and tried to figure out which was the best one. I could see hundreds, maybe thousands or even millions, hanging in the clear sky. There was one in particular, in the west above the mountains but low in the sky, which shone more brightly than all the rest. I pointed and claimed it. Dad smiled, telling me I chose Venus. It looked bigger and brighter because it was much closer than other stars. It reflected the light of the sun. “I like it anyway,” I said. “Alright,” Dad agreed. “It’s Christmas. You can have a planet if you want.”
From then on, Venus got a new name in our family, Betty’s Planet. After Christmas, Dad found another job in the mine and he worked like mad. Gradually, we could make ends meet and there were presents under the Christmas tree and cakes when it was my birthday. But deep down, no present could match Betty’s Planet.
Years later, I entered university, majoring in engineering, but I stuck to my passion for astronomy in my spare time. In my junior year, I became the first undergraduate ever to discover an asteroid (小行星) when examining images of thousands of asteroids on my computer, due to which I was given the right to name this asteroid according to the tradition of International Astronomical Union.

Passage 5
(24-25学年高二下·山东日照·期末)
On the afternoon of his 18th birthday, Tony climbed up to the dusty attic (阁楼) searching for childhood photos to show his college friends. As he moved aside some old suitcases, his fingers brushed against a small wooden box in the corner. Wiping off a thick layer of dust, he could barely make out the faded label “My Sunshine” written in his mother’s delicate handwriting.
With growing curiosity, Tony opened the box. His breath caught in his throat as he discovered a treasure trove of memories. There, resting on a bed of yellowed tissue paper, was his first lost tooth wrapped in a tiny handkerchief. Tony’s fingers trembled as he uncovered every handmade birthday card he’d ever given her.
Digging deeper, Tony found a leather-bound notebook filled with detailed entries: “March 12, 2005—Tony took his first steps today!”; “May 18, 2018—Won the science fair, so proud!” Each page contained not just facts but her emotional reactions—little notes like “He looked so small walking into that big school.” or “I cried when the judges called his name.”
At the very bottom of the box, Tony found something unexpected—a dried flower pressed between two sheets of wax paper. It took him a moment to recognize it: a daisy from his elementary school Mother’s Day performance, when he sang off-key (跑调) but beamed with pride as she clapped the loudest.
Holding the box to his chest, Tony knew this birthday would be different, This time, he wouldn’t just accept her love—he would finally return it.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·广东广州·期末)
Lila pulled at the worn edge of her blue-and-white socks. These were the socks her grandma had made for her tenth birthday. She pulled them up to her knees before her first middle school basketball game and she made the winning shot. From then on, she thought these socks could bring her good luck.
After that, Lila only wore this pair of socks to games. She even skipped washing them because she thought washing would take away the luck. The team won many games, and Lila was good at passing and shooting. She joked about her “lucky socks,” but deep down, she really believed they helped.
As the championship games got closer, Lila’s socks were getting old: the colors were fading, there was a hole near her heel, and they smelled a bit funny. Still, she didn’t want to change them.
The first problem came in the semi-final. Lila’s foot slipped in her shoe during a layup (上篮), making her team suffer a loss because of her missing shot. She blamed her shoes, not the socks. In the final, the hole in her sock caught on a blister, leading to a fall. The other team stole the ball and sealed the victory. Lila sat on the bench, crying, as she stared at her socks.
That night, Grandma came in with a new pair of socks, the same blue and white. “Real magic comes from practice, not from luck,” she said gently. Lila nodded. She knew the old socks had become a problem, not a help.
Over the summer, Lila trained hard: running, passing the ball, lifting weights, and practicing shots. She wore the new socks, but they were just socks — comfortable and supportive. When the new season started, she felt stronger.
The final championship game of this season came and Lila’s team faced a tough competitor. Lila tried her best to catch the ball and run toward the basket, moving fast. Time kicked fast and there were 10 seconds left in the game. Lila’s team was one point behind. Her teammate passed the ball to her.
Lila glanced at her socks, a reminder from her grandma.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·江苏南京·期末)
This past summer, my mom came home with an armful of books and a very serious look on her face. She said it was time I started reading “real books”, and I immediately complained. I’d been through this talk before: the one where she told me that I’d “thank her later” for making me a reader, and that books would make me “smarter” and give me “imagination”. I already had my phone, and group chats with friends. What did I need books for?
Still, when I saw the titles, I paused (停顿). These weren’t the classics she normally tried to push on me. These were books with bright covers, funny titles, and characters who looked like they could be real people. “Just give it a try,” Mom said, “You might even like them.”
Hesitantly, I picked up Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. But reading seemed like such a boring, task compared to the instant entertainment on my phone. I thought about my friends chatting in our group and the endless videos within easy reach. Books felt old-fashioned and slow, and demanded too much focus. Besides, what was the point of reading about made-up people when I had real friends and real stories all around me? With a sigh, I threw the book onto my desk, half-expecting it to sit there, untouched, all summer.
Then, one night, there was a power failure. Unfortunately, my phone was dead, my laptop wasn’t charged, and there was nothing to do but lie there in bed, waiting for the power to come back on. When I looked around, I noticed the book Out of My Mind, siting there in the dark. With nothing better to do, I grabbed it, and opened the first page with a flashlight. I wasn’t expecting to read more than a paragraph. But after a few pages, I was actually curious.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二下·湖南衡阳·期末)
David loved writing. When the school announced an English writing competition, David was eager to participate. He worked hard on his entry, believing it was his chance to prove himself. However, when the results were announced, David’s name wasn’t there. He felt a deep sense of disappointment and frustration, as if all his hard work had been in vain.
After the competition, David felt too embarrassed to talk about his failure. He spent days in his room, avoiding everyone. His former imagination seemed to have dried up, and he couldn’t find the motivation to write anymore. It felt like a part of him had been destroyed.
One afternoon, as David sat in his room, his English teacher, Mr. Carter, came to visit. Mr. Carter was a kind and encouraging teacher who had always believed in David s potential. He had noticed David’s absence in class and decided to check in on him.
“Hey, David,” Mr. Carter said gently. “I heard about the competition. I’m really sorry you didn’t win, but I know how much effort you put into it. You should be proud of yourself for trying.” David looked down, feeling defeated. “I just don’t get it, Mr. Carter,” he said quietly. “I worked so hard, but it wasn’t enough. I feel like I’m never going to be good enough.”
Mr. Carter sat down next to David and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder., He said, “David, writing is not just about winning competitions. It’s about expressing yourself and sharing your ideas. Sometimes, even the best writers don’t win. But that doesn’t mean they’re not good. It just means they need to keep trying and learning.”
With Mr. Carter’s encouragement, David began to analyze his writing. They discussed the strengths and weaknesses of his entry, and Mr. Carter offered valuable suggestions. David started to feel more confident and motivated. He realized that failure was just a part of the learning process.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二下·四川雅安·期末)
Sophie was dressed and all ready for her very first dance solo. When she started dance classes last year, she didn’t know about the solo. She heard people talk about it but didn’t know what it was. The solo was a chance for all of the parents and grandparents to see the dance that students danced. It was held at the high school every year, and Sophie was going to dance on stage in front of everyone. She disliked the thought of that as it scared her, and she didn’t know how to deal with it.
Yesterday she practiced her dance for the first time on stage. There were only a few moms watching, so it wasn’t too bad. But the thought of dancing in front of lots of people tonight was really scary.
“Ready to go?” Mom asked. “Yes. I guess so,” answered Sophie. But Mom noticed the nervousness in Sophie’s voice and asked what was wrong. Sophie said, “I don’t know, not feeling good and kind of afraid.” Mom then sat on the edge of Sophie’s bed and reminded her of yesterday’s practice when she was in the front row and Sophie did just fine. Sophie worried that there would be so many people today. Mom told her that when she went on stage, she should look right where Mom was sitting yesterday as Mom would be in the same seat, and-it would be just like yesterday. Sophie nodded hesitantly, then got up and prepared to set off.
Sophie thought about her mom’s words all the way to the high school. Mom was always right, but Sophie wasn’t sure about it this time. She still hated the thought of dancing in front of all those people.
When it was her turn to dance, Sophie thought about what Mom had told her.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·广东深圳·期末)
When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical (歇斯底里).
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have? Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·江苏无锡·期末)
Today I found out my grandmother’s cancer took a turn for the worse and she had no more than 6 months to live. Although she lives across the country, the bond between us has always been strong. Her diagnosis (诊断) in November made me extremely upset. But after she had surgery to remove the cancer, we were hopeful until today, when her scans came out, showing that the cancer had spread to her liver. The doctor said treatment was no longer an option.
I was at work when I got the news. It was my mother who called me, her voice trembling with every word. I tried to comfort her, but the weight of the terrible news was insufferable. Both of us were choking back tears. The moment the phone was hung up, I stumbled (跌跌撞撞) outside to my car, took the driver’s seat and finally broke down in tears, grief (悲伤) pouring out of me in waves. I didn’t care who might hear—I just needed to let it out.
Outside the window, it was like a busy party where people kept coming and going. The entrance of the store was crowded, with customers rushing in and out as usual. Some regular customers from our store must have seen me in that awkward moment, but I was too lost in my sadness to notice anyone around.
After what seemed like hours, I had to pull myself together, wiping my tears and taking deep breaths before returning to work. I mechanically went about my business with a forced smile, helping customers and stocking shelves, my mind a thousand miles away. Shortly after, I was approached by one of my colleagues, saying there was something to my car. I had him take it off my car and bring it in to me. It was a bunch of beautiful and delicate flowers.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二下·湖北十堰·期末)
The first time I went to Paris, I just graduated from high school. This solo trip was my dream adventure, for which I’d spent a whole year saving up every penny. I packed my single suitcase with military precision, but my parents warned me over my excitement. “Expect the unexpected,” Dad said, but I brushed it off. I had carefully planned each day, so what could possibly go wrong?
Halfway through the flight, turbulence (湍流) hit hard. The young man sitting next to me had just returned from the restroom when the plane shook violently. He lost his balance and almost fell to the floor. I caught him by the arm and helped him sit back. I’d noticed him earlier; he was absorbed in a book during the entire flight.
“Thanks,” he said, flashing an embarrassed smile. We got talking. His name was Leo, a Parisian returning home after a year abroad in university. When I mentioned it was my first time in France, he suggested a list of “real Paris” spots—none of which were in my guidebook.
No sooner had we landed at the airport than the first “unexpected” my parents warned about came true. After the marathon of passport control and customs, I joined the crowd at baggage claim (行李提取处). The carousel (行李传送带) brought out suitcase after suitcase, but mine never appeared. I checked the flight number above the carousel again and again. Around me, the crowds of passengers thinned—they grabbed their belongings and hurried off to begin their Parisian adventures. I stood frozen, my stomach sinking.
“Any problem?” I heard someone asked. I turned to find Leo standing there, with a big backpack on his back. I admitted my trouble, trying to keep my voice steady. The notebook with my careful plan, my charger and the carefully chosen outfits——all gone with the suitcase. “Ah, classic Paris moment!” Leo said with his eyebrows shooting up and a sense of humor. “Take it easy. Let’s fix this.”

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·广东东莞·期末)
Life is full of tiny mysteries waiting to be discovered—especially if you’re someone like me, always curious about what is hidden in the everyday. Ever since I was little, I’ve believed that even the simplest moment holds surprises.
I’ve been finding things since I was a baby. Mum would come home and drop her bag by the door. I’d crawl over, eager to explore its contents—keys, a wallet, or maybe a candy wrapper. Mum would lift me up, smiling, “What are you searching for, Frankie?” That’s how I got my nickname “little detective” and my love for solving “mysteries”. Mac, my furry dog, always joined in, its nose sniffing for clues. Yet, our cat, Snowball, usually slept nearby, ignoring our adventures.
Mac and I loved to find things together. One Thursday, our skills were tested. Mac and I were playing in the yard while Snowball was sleeping on the grass. Suddenly, Mum approached us, with the case in question. Her diamond ring was missing, and she wanted us to find it. If I had known how tricky the case would be, I might have hesitated. But I said then as I’d say today, “There is nothing we can’t find, guaranteed!”
I asked Mum the first question I always asked when something went missing, “Where do you last remember seeing it?”
“I was in the kitchen baking cookies,” Mum answered. “I took off my ring and placed it on the small shelf above the counter. But then your aunt called, and when I came back from talking to her, the ring was gone!”
“Well, it couldn’t have disappeared all by itself,” I said, eyeing the floor. “Mac, let’s go take a closer look.” Mac led the way to the kitchen, its tail wagging sharply. Suddenly I found there were tiny cat’s paw prints in the spilled flour (面粉)。

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·江苏苏州·期末)
Liam had never liked hospitals. But every Thursday afternoon, he walked through the double doors of the wards in Nationwide Children’s Hospital, carrying a worn guitar and a bag full of puppets (木偶). After losing his younger sister to blood cancer five years earlier, Liam started volunteering as a hospital entertainer—quietly giving laughter where it was most needed.
He wasn’t loud, or particularly funny. But he was gentle, patient, and kind. Most kids smiled eventually with his company, even the shy ones. When Liam played together with them, the kids were wild with joy. Some clapped along to his songs. Some asked to try the puppets themselves. Almost all doctors and nurses said his visits were better than medicine to some degree.
But actually, there was one patient he couldn’t quite reach: Ava, a ten-year-old girl with a notebook always clutched (紧抓) to her chest. She rarely spoke, rarely smiled, and never made eye contact to anyone. She watched Liam’s puppet shows from her bed, silent and still, showing no interest in anything around at all. Her drawings, though, told another story—skies full of stars, animals in suits, and people with wings. So strange was she that other kids also kept a distance from her.
Week after week, Liam kept trying. He used every puppet voice he knew, from silly, funny, to serious. He even brought in a little red hat for his main puppet, Charlie, hoping to make her laugh. Still, the girl gave no reaction.
Then one Thursday, as Liam packed up to leave, he noticed something new on her nightstand: a drawing of Charlie—the puppet with the red hat—holding hands with a girl who looked a lot like Ava. Liam felt a wave of warmth and surprise flooded into his heart.
He smiled and quietly left a note beside it: “Looks like he made a friend.”
The next week, as Liam played his guitar as usual, Ava finally opened her mouth.
“Does your puppet have a name?” she asked, so softly that he almost thought he imagined it.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二下·江苏徐州·期末)
Mark and Daniel were next-door neighbors. Every summer, the two families held backyard barbecues together, with Mark bringing homemade dumplings and Daniel’s wife preparing her famous cakes. During holidays, they exchanged small but thoughtful gifts.
One June, Mark began building a new garden shed to store his tools. He hired a construction team that worked quickly but not carefully. Large wooden boards and sharp nails were piled dangerously close to Daniel’s fence. Daniel noticed that and warned the workers to be more careful, but the warning was brushed off.
Then it happened. A sudden summer storm hit the town. Strong winds knocked over the pile of wood. The damage to Daniel’s garden was awful—his wife’s prized rose bushes, which she had been nurturing (培育) for over fifteen years, were crushed and destroyed.
She was heartbroken. Failing to comfort her, Daniel stormed over to Mark’s house, demanding an apology and help with the repairs. But Mark, who had just returned from work and was tired and stressed, felt wrongly accused.
“It’s not on purpose,” he said sharply. “You can’t blame me for the weather.”
“But it wouldn’t have happened if your workers had listened!” Daniel argued.
Voices were raised, fingers pointed, and neither side was willing to back down. That day, a long-standing friendship cracked under pressure. From then on, they stopped greeting each other and even avoided eye contact. Days passed. Seasons changed. But the cold silence remained.
Winter came. One day, Daniel caught a glimpse of Mark and noticed he was in a wheelchair with a cast (石膏) on his leg. Daniel hesitated about going over but his feet remained.
A heavy snowstorm quietly arrived that night, blanketing the neighborhood in thick, icy snow. When morning came, driveways were buried, and doors were nearly frozen shut. Men came out of their houses to clear the driveways.
By the window Mark looked at his broken leg and sighed, “My responsibility! But now there’s no chance for me to make it.”
At noon, Daniel noticed Mark’s driveway was still covered with thick snow.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二下·江苏扬州·期末)
Jason had always been the quietest student in Mrs. Clark’s class. While his classmates laughed and shared stories during breaks, he would sit by the window, quietly filling his notebook with detailed sketches (素描) of school life-the soccer field at sunset, the way sunlight passed through the classroom windows, even the expressions on his classmates’ faces as they worked. Most students assumed he preferred to be alone, though no one had ever really asked.
That changed on the Thursday when their teacher announced the term’s major project. “You’ll pair up to create a multimedia presentation (展示) about the importance of teamwork,” Mrs. Clark explained, “This will account for 20% of your grade.”
The room immediately erupted as students turned to their friends. Jason froze, his pencil staying above a half-finished sketch of the classroom. He watched as groups formed effortlessly around him: the athletes gathered together, the debate team members pairing up, even the other quiet students seemed to have arranged partners.
Just as Jason was about to ask if he could work alone, a shadow fell across his desk. “Hey,” said Mark, the captain of the soccer team, his usual confident voice slightly hesitant. “I noticed you’re really observant and your sketches prove that. Want to team up? I’m good at talking, but I need someone who really sees things.”
Their first meeting in the library was awkward. Mark talked excitedly about soccer strategies while Jason responded in short, quiet sentences. But when Mark saw Jason’s notebook filled with incredibly detailed drawings that captured moments Mark had never noticed, his eyes widened. “These are incredible!” he said excitedly, going through the pages. “You’ve got this amazing way of showing what really matters. What if you designed our presentation visuals (视觉资料) while I handle the speaking parts?”
For the first time that term, Jason felt his shoulders relax. Someone had not only noticed him, but valued what he could contribute.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·浙江杭州·期末)
It was early autumn when the school organized a weekend camping trip to a nearby mountain forest. The air was crisp, the leaves were turning golden, and the students were buzzing with excitement. After weeks of studying and exams, everyone welcomed the chance to enjoy nature and relax outdoors.
Among the students were four close friends: Leo, Eric, Jason, and Alice. Though their personalities were quite different, they made a great team. Alice, the only girl in the group, was smart and well-prepared. She had brought along a compass, a map, and even a first-aid kit.
After arriving at the campsite, the students pitched their tents, gathered firewood, and helped prepare a simple meal. The campsite was surrounded by tall pine trees, and in the distance, a mountain stream could be heard. The teachers reminded everyone to stay within the marked area and never go off-trail alone.
After lunch, the students were allowed to explore in small groups. Leo’s group decided to follow a trail leading up a hill. According to Alice, there was a small lookout point that offered a beautiful view of the valley.
As they walked, Jason kept running ahead, calling the others to hurry. “Let’s see what’s up there!” he shouted. Alice followed closely behind, holding the map. Leo walked at a steady pace, checking that no one fell behind. Eric lagged at the end, clearly nervous about being so deep in the forest.
The path became narrower as they climbed. Birds chirped in the trees, and dry leaves crunched under their shoes. The sunlight filtered through the branches above, casting dancing shadows on the ground. After about an hour, they reached the edge of a rocky area covered in leaves. The trail began to twist more than expected, and many landmarks they passed didn’t match what was on the map.
“I think the viewpoint is just beyond this slope (斜坡),” Jason said, pointing excitedly.
Leo looked uncertain. “Let’s be careful. It looks slippery.”
But before anyone could stop him, Jason had already climbed ahead.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·浙江湖州·期末)
The title of “Aaron’s younger brother” was given to me when I had won my first tennis tournament at the age of six. Whenever I stepped onto a tennis court, it was as though a name label with “Aaron’s younger brother” in big letters had been already stuck onto me. All people had to do was refer to the imaginary label and they would know how to address me.
“Why don’t the two of you play doubles together?” This was a question repeatedly asked during my sign-ups for every tennis tournament, including this one. The answer was simple — I wanted to defeat Aaron, my older brother whose fame had made me a nameless tennis player. As I shook Aaron’s hand at the start of the match, I stared at him with determination, hoping this match could change everything.
“I’m going to beat you today.” I gathered the confidence to claim over the outcome of the match. “Are you sure, Dallon?” Aaron laughed sneeringly (轻蔑地) as he turned his back towards me and walked away. For a brief moment, I regretted that display of over-confidence.
I nervously shifted my weight from one foot to the other. The tennis court seemed to stretch out further than usual, but I could still make out the self-satisfied look on Aaron’s face. My sweaty hands tightened my racket (球拍) — the fifth one passed down to me from Aaron. If I did win today, it would enable me to get a new racket for a change.
It was definitely a close game. I was persevering as expected, but I was not sure how long it would take before I quit. We were down to the last round, neck and neck in points. I was fuelled with adrenaline (肾上腺素) as I inched closer to the possibility of victory. Just then, my knees weak, I made a mistake and missed the ball.

Passage 3
(24-25学年高二下·浙江温州·期末)
I stood in the school auditorium(礼堂),VR headset on my head. The virtual forest buzzed with life—3D fireflies danced above a stream, their glow waving on the water. My team had spent months programming this for the Eco Youth Summit, to show how deforestation harms wildlife. The air smelled of fresh paint, and whispers from the audience reached me through the headset.
But as judges approached, the headset suddenly went dark. Panic surged through me. I tore off the device to see Maya frozen at the control panel(控制板). “Server crashed,” she mouthed, hands shaking over the black screen. “Our project—it’s all gone.” Murmurs rose in the crowd, and my neck burned under the stage lights.
I scanned the judges, their expectant smiles fading. A man in green tapped his writing board; the woman beside him frowned at her watch. Then my gaze met a girl in the front row, holding a stuffed owl(猫头鹰). Her pigtails bobbed as she leaned forward, but when I shook my head, her eyes filled with disappointment—mirroring my sister’s look when a trip is canceled.
“Wait,” I claimed, grabbing Maya’s arm. She shrank back, but I pressed on: “What if we tell the story without VR?” For a moment, she stared, then nodded sharply. Stepping to the stage edge, I said, “This forest isn’t just code. It’s a real home where owls nest...” My voice cracked, but words poured out—about drying rivers, about birds losing habitats.
When I finished, the auditorium fell silent. Suddenly the girl rose to her feet, with her sneakers making a sharp noise: “Instead of a virtual forest, can we plant a real tree?” The audience laughed softly, and judges exchanged nods. Maya’s hand found mine, steady and warm. Though the VR failed, a definite idea had taken root.

Passage 4
(24-25学年高二下·四川达州·期末)
One week, we participated in a program that aimed to bring students fun and also strengthen their courage. On the third morning, we left our camp for a hike. We picked our way along a stream in a park. There were six of us. Tall and strong, Sam led the way.
After a while, we found a small waterfall and some smaller kids playing in the pool below together with their camp leaders. Forked ribbons of water (分叉的带状水流) leapt about three meters into the pool.
We settled ourselves on a large stone above the waterfall. We unpacked our bags and spread out food, eating and laughing. Minutes later, the others carried all the food and attempted to jump across the stream above the waterfall. Soon, they crossed the first narrow ribbon of water and were now standing on the rocks that bordered the second channel.
To me, the second channel looked so wide! Scared, I decided to stay right where I was. But they yelled back, “Come on over here! If you want any juice, that is!” I was thirsty. Slowly, I picked my way across a group of rocks till I reached a flat stone opposite where they were grouped. All had their backs to me; they were now busy aiming small stones at a fallen tree on the bank.
I glanced down. The very cold water was running past the stone, inches away from my feet. I looked across the belt of water towards the tempting fruit juice! This sight inspired me to take action. I bent down, tensed myself to leap, and then glanced towards the left side.
Barely two meters away was the waterfall. Although it was small and there were adults below, I still feared. My knees trembled; I drew back a couple of paces, staring at the running water.
“Come along, Jimmy!” Sam said in a gentle voice. I looked up. Sam stood on the other side, barely four feet away from me. He must have seen me hesitating on the edge of the stone and sensed my terror at jumping across this little stream! Embarrassed, I took off my glasses.

Passage 1
(24-25学年高二下·湖南雅礼中学·期末)
The cold weather forced the large red dog to bend into a tighter ball. Old Red lived outside Larry’s barbershop, sleeping on a small carpet. He had stayed there for a hot summer.
Old Red once had a friend—a black dog. But one night, his friend disappeared and Old Red was alone again. I always wished Old Red had his home. I would have adopted him in a minute. But we lived in a small apartment with our kids and we were unable to spare money for a dog’s medicine and food. I wondered who was feeding Old Red daily.
One day I found it out. “My husband even buys the most expensive food for Old Red,” Larry’s wife smiled. “He wants to bring him home, but his old mother living with us fears dogs extremely.” I then thanked Larry for his care. He brushed aside my thanks, insisting the dog meant nothing to him. During a snowstorm, Old Red disappeared. I asked Larry where he could be. “I’m glad he’s gone. He was a bother,” Larry said, busily cutting a customer’s hair. Later, his wife told me Larry was actually looking for the dog
On the third day, the dog reappeared. But I felt his nose: hot and dry. Bursting into the barbershop, I yelled, “Larry, Old Red is sick!” Larry replied, “I know. He won’t eat.”
I left the shop; for hours I tried to get someone to help Old Red, but in vain. My husband asked with pity, “Do you want me to go and look at that dog with you?” Quickly grabbing a blanket and antibiotics (抗生素) one of our children had been taking, we piled our kids in the car, driving to Larry’s shop. To my shock, Old Red was gone and couldn’t be found.
The next day I took the boys in for a haircut. Old Red was back, but looked worse than ever. After feeling his hot nose, I ran into the barbershop.

Passage 2
(24-25学年高二下·四川广安·期末)
In the heart of a busy city full of towering buildings, there was a small, lovely bookstore filled with lots of books from the past and present. This special place was taken care of by Eli, a young man who got it from his late parents. But as ebooks and online articles became more popular, Eli faced a tough choice: keep his family’s bookstore going or change with the times.
Life in the city moved fast, and many other shops had to close down. This left Eli’s bookstore as one of the few friendly spots left in a city that was always changing. When fewer people came to the bookstore, Eli began to worry about whether he had made the right choice. It felt like a big storm was coming, and he wasn’t sure what to do.
Then, Maya came into Eli’s life. She was a teacher who loved books a lot. She didn’t think the bookstore was old-fashioned. Instead, she saw it as a special place full of stories and history. Maya’s support made Eli feel hopeful again. She showed him that the bookstore was important not because it made money, but because it made people happy and brought them together.
Eli felt inspired by Maya and decided to do something new with the bookstore. He started having story nights every week, where people could come and tell their own stories about adventure, bravery, and love. Slowly, the bookstore became more than just a place to find books. It turned into a busy spot where people could meet and share stories, making them love reading and each other even more.
But just when things were going well, Eli and Maya found out that a big company wanted to build a shopping mall in the place where the bookstore was. This news was a big shock. The growing community and all their hard work seemed at risk. The bookstore wasn’t just a shop; it was a symbol of hope, strength, and the power of togetherness. Losing it would be a big loss, not just for them but for everyone who found peace.

【答案】
Sitting alone in the corner of the classroom, Jack stared blankly at his script, his head hanging low. Seeing his depression, we gathered around him, comforting him. With our support surrounding him, the heavy atmosphere began to lift. Suddenly, inspiration struck me — we could adapt the script to include his injury! Faces brightening with excitement, the group instantly cheered in agreement, their lively chatter and laughter filling the classroom. With the storyline skillfully modified, we practiced tirelessly, Jack’s crutches becoming a meaningful symbol in the play, his confidence growing as we were ready for the upcoming performance.
When the performance day finally arrived, Jack also stood on stage on crutches. Though his injured leg trembled slightly, he held his head high, his bright smile lighting up his face as he scanned the cheering crowd. We acted out the drama, and our voices rang out with excitement, each line filled with our shared effort. After the performance, the audience’s applause thundered through the hall, lasting and warm. “I couldn’t have done this without you,” Jack said emotionally, his eyes shining. At that moment, we felt the power of our united class. Our big, loving family had made a miracle happen, and happiness filled every heart.

【答案】Paragraph 1
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. The faded sunflower, once golden and bright, now mirrored Dad’s silent sacrifices. Memories flooded in: him skipping meals to pay for my textbooks, his cracked hands gripping the steering wheel, and the way he proudly called his patches “medals.” My outburst replayed in my head, sharp and ugly. Guilt gnawed at me as I realized his questions weren’t prying—they were his lifeline to my world. The quiet click of the door echoed louder than any argument.
Paragraph 2
I knocked at the door and it opened. Dad sat on the edge of his bed, the sunflower keychain trembling in his hands. “I… I’m sorry,” I choked out. He looked up, eyes weary but soft. “I just wanted to know you’re okay,” he murmured. Tears blurred my vision as I hugged him, his patched uniform rough against my cheek. “Your medals are real,” I whispered. He laughed, a warm sound that melted the tension. From then on, his “How’s school?” became a bridge, not a burden.

【答案】
This time, I decided to give Dad a present. I named the asteroid “Matt’s Star” to honor him. When I told Dad about it on the phone, he fell silent for a while. Then he said, “Betty, that’s the best gift I’ve ever received.” I explained that the asteroid was small but special, just like the star he gave me years ago. I also told him that whenever he looked up at the sky, he could think of it as a symbol of our love, which would never fade.
Dad said he owed me an apology for that Christmas. “I was so poor then that I couldn’t give you a real present,” he said with a sigh. I told him that Betty’s Planet was the most precious gift because it taught me to find joy in simple things. I added that if there was no that Christmas, I might not have developed a love for astronomy, which led me to discover the asteroid. Dad laughed and said he was proud of me, and from that day on, we often talked about “our stars” on the phone.

【答案】
Tony wiped his eyes and headed downstairs. He found his mother’s favorite vase in the living room and filled it with fresh daisies—just like the one she’d saved all those years. He decided to prepare a surprise for her too. Then, he rummaged through the kitchen, gathering ingredients to bake her favorite cookies — something he’d never done before. As the sweet scent filled the air, Tony sat at the table and began writing a letter, pouring out all the love and gratitude he’d never expressed.
His mother came back home with a big birthday cake. The moment she stepped inside, her eyes widened — the flowers, the warm cookies, and Tony waiting with a smile. Before she could speak, he hugged her tightly, whispering, “Thank you for keeping every little piece of me.” Tears welled in her eyes as she noticed the open wooden box on the table. “I’ve kept these for you, hoping one day you’d find them and know how much you mean to me.’” she murmured, touched. That night, instead of blowing out candles alone, Tony held her hand as they made a wish together — a new tradition born from the love she’d always cherished.

Back home, Grandma hugged her and took out the old socks.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Lila glanced at her socks, a reminder from her grandma. She remembered what Grandma had said: “Real magic comes from practice, not from luck.” With that in mind, she dribbled the ball quickly, dodged two defenders, and jumped high. The ball flew through the air and swished into the basket just as the buzzer rang. Her teammates rushed over, cheering loudly. Lila looked down at her new socks and smiled, knowing that it was her hard work, not luck, that had won the game.
Back home, Grandma hugged her and took out the old socks. “I kept these because they remind us of how far you’ve come,” Grandma said gently. Lila touched the hole in the heel and realized that the old socks had taught her a valuable lesson: what truly matters is the effort we put in, not any imaginary luck. She decided to keep the old socks as a memory, while continuing to train hard with her new ones.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
By the time L finished the fist chapter, the power was back on. However, I was so fascinated that I kept reading late into the night, completely absorbed. I found myself racing through the pages, unable to put the book down. Before I knew it, I’d read the entire book. I lay there, staring at the ceiling, with the story staying with me and filling me with emotions I hadn’t anticipated. Suddenly, a question came to mind: What would my friends think of this story? Inspired by this thought, I decided to recommend it to them.
The next day, I shared the honk with my fiends excitedly. As they dived into the story, I saw their faces lit up. Realizing the excitement that a book could offer, we started a book club to appreciate more stories together. As word of our club spread, a few new friends joined. Our little group grew big, united by a shared passion for reading. The simple act of sharing a book reminded us to establish profound connections with the written word. I was grateful to my mom for introducing me to this wonderful world of books.

Over the next few weeks, David threw himself back into his writing. He practiced every day, incorporating Mr. Carter’s advice. He wrote essays, short stories, and even poetry, constantly pushing himself to improve. Slowly but surely, his confidence grew, and he began to enjoy writing again. He found that the more he wrote, the more ideas flowed through his mind. Each word he put on paper felt like a small victory, and he started to see his writing in a new light. He realized that the joy of writing wasn’t just in winning competitions, but in the process of creation itself.
The next school year brought another writing competition. This time, David was determined to give it his best shot. He submitted an essay that he had worked on for weeks, feeling more prepared and hopeful than ever before. When the results were announced, David’s heart raced with anticipation. To his delight, his name was called as one of the winners. He couldn’t believe it — he had done it! All the hard work and perseverance had paid off. David knew that this victory was not just his own; it was evidence for the power of believing in oneself and never giving up.

【答案】One possible version
When it was her turn to dance. Sophie thought about what Mom had told her. She took a deep breath, stepped onto the stage, and looked straight at the front row where Mom sat. As the music started, she blocked out the rest of the audience and focused only on that one spot. At first, her legs trembled a little, but as she moved to the rhythm, memories of yesterday’s smooth practice came back. Slowly, she relaxed and let the dance take over. By the end, she was completely lost in the joy of dancing. The applause that followed made her heart swell with pride.
Sophie ran happily to Mom in the hall of the school. “Mom! I did it!” she shouted, jumping up and down with excitement. Mom opened her arms and gave her a big hug, saying, “I knew you could! You were amazing out there!” Sophie beamed and said, “It was all because of your advice. Looking at you made me feel like I was just dancing for one person, not the whole crowd.” Mom gently stroked her hair and replied, “You’ve just overcome your biggest fear, and I’m so proud of you.” Holding Mom’s hand tightly, Sophie couldn’t wait for the next dance performance.

Paragraph 1: Several minutes passed, but no help came.

Paragraph 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Several minutes passed, but no help came. The air inside the lift grew stale, and panic started to set in. Mrs Lim's condition was worsening, and I felt a sense of helplessness creeping over me. I tried to stay calm and think of a way out, but the situation seemed dire. The silence was deafening, broken only by Mrs Lim’s labored breathing and occasional sobs. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly as we waited for a miracle.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Relief flooded through me as I realized help had finally arrived. The sound of tools clanging against the door signaled their efforts to rescue us. Moments later, the door was pried open, and fresh air rushed in. We were safe. Mrs Lim was quickly attended to by the paramedics, and I was filled with gratitude for their swift response. As we were escorted out of the lift, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of appreciation for the fragility of life and the importance of helping others in times of need.

【答案】Beside was a card and I opened it. On the card were the words, “We noticed your sadness and wanted to bring some sunshine. Sending you love and strength.” There was only a phone number at the bottom. I stared at it, a lump forming in my throat. The beautiful bouquet of lilies and daisies beside me released a sweet fragrance, as if trying to wrap me in a warm embrace. I couldn’t believe that a stranger had taken the time to offer comfort during my darkest hour.
I phoned the number on the card. A gentle voice answered on the second ring. “Hello?” she said. “This is the one who got your flowers,” I replied, my voice thick with emotion. She introduced herself as Emily, a regular customer. “I saw you crying—lost my mom to cancer too,” she said softly. We talked about grief and small comforts. Her words soothed me like warm tea. “You’re not alone,” she said. Hanging up, I held the flowers, feeling a tiny spark of light in the darkness.

【答案】参考范文:
He accompanied me to the Baggage Service. There we were received by a middle-aged officer, who checked about my baggage information in the computer and apologetically said it was delayed. “You’ll get it in two days, I promise,” she said kindly. Though exhausted, I felt great relief — at least it wasn’t lost, and someone was helping me. Outside the airport, Leo insisted I borrow some clothes and a charger from him. “First rule of Paris,” he grinned, “never let baggage ruin the adventure.” His kindness turned a disaster into the start of an unexpected friendship.
I finally received my suitcase at my hotel two days later as I was promised. By then, though, I’d already explored the interesting hidden bookshops, private museums and tucked-away cafes Leo recommended, wearing the borrowed sweater that suited me very well. Strangely, losing my bag led me to experience Paris more freely — without precise plans or a guidebook. When we met for coffee that afternoon, I laughed and handed back his clothes. “Turns out my dad was right,” I admitted. Leo raised his cup, eyes twinkling. The best stories begin with the unexpected. The best part of it, in my case, was the friendship with Leo.

【答案】
“That must be the cat,” I said proudly. Without thinking twice, I started following the paw prints with Mac by my side. The paw prints led us out of the kitchen and into the living room. Then, we rushed outside, scanning every corner of the yard. After a thorough search, we finally spotted Snowball hiding at the corner of the closet. However, we failed to spot the ring. With a sinking heart, I went back to the kitchen with Mac. Just then, Mum held a plate of freshly-baked cookies. “Here, have some,” she said, trying to cheer us up.
Feeling upset, I took a small bit of cookie but stopped when I felt something hard. Spitting it out immediately, I saw Mum’s diamond ring covered in bits of cookies. My eyes widened in surprise. “Mum! I found it!” I shouted excitedly, jumping up and down. Mum grabbed my hand, her eyes fixed on the ring. “You found it!” she exclaimed. It turned out that the cat had knocked the ring into the flour while prowling around the kitchen counter. Mac barked happily. We all burst out laughing at the unexpected discovery. Life’s surprises, whether in a cookie or a cat’s playful steps, remind us to keep searching with an open heart.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Liam was so surprised that he almost dropped the guitar. He managed to steady his hands and replied with a gentle smile, “His name is Charlie.” Then he carefully picked up Charlie and began to make the puppet wave at Ava. “Charlie says hello,” he said softly. Ava’s eyes lit up slightly, and for the first time, she made eye contact with Liam. Encouraged, Liam spent the rest of the visit sharing stories about Charlie’s adventures, and Ava listened intently, even letting out a few small giggles. Before he left, Ava shyly showed him more of her drawings, and Liam praised each one sincerely. From that day on, Ava became more open, and their friendship grew with each weekly visit.
Years later, Ava became a volunteer in that same hospital. Remembering how Liam’s kindness had touched her during her darkest days, she wanted to bring the same warmth to other children. She would sit by the bedsides, sharing stories, showing her drawings, and listening to the kids’ thoughts. When she saw a withdrawn child, she didn’t give up easily. Instead, she patiently found their interests and slowly opened their hearts. Just as Liam had once done for her, Ava became a source of light for those in need, passing on the love and hope that had been given to her.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Daniel decided to help. He dressed warmly, picked up his snow shovel, and stepped into the cold. Without a word, he walked to Mark’s driveway and began to clear the heavy snow. Soon, the sound of scraping echoed through the quiet neighborhood. Inside, Mark’s wife noticed and quickly joined Daniel with a broom, brushing the steps and path. Mark watched from the window, emotion tightening his chest. The sight of Daniel working steadily, despite the past, made something shift inside him.
A snow-cleared driveway appeared before Mark and his family. Mark rolled to the door, the cold air rushing in as he looked at the giant figure in the snow. “Thank you,” he said simply, his voice uncertain but sincere. Daniel gave a quiet nod, eyes soft but steady. Mark paused, then added, “I was wrong that day…tired or not, I shouldn’t have yelled. I’m truly sorry about the roses, and everything.” Daniel’s gaze softened further. That evening, Mark’s wife brought over dumplings; Daniel’s wife returned the gesture with slices of cake. The snow kept falling, but between the two homes, warmth had quietly returned—built not by words, but by forgiveness and shared kindness.

【答案】
The next week, as they worked side by side, something amazing happened. Jason found himself suggesting ideas aloud, while Mark patiently listened. When Jason hesitated over a design choice, Mark didn’t interrupt but waited. “Your perspective matters,” Mark said simply. Those three words unlocked something in Jason. By their third meeting, he was speaking in full sentences, even laughing at Mark’s jokes. Their project wasn’t just a presentation, but a smooth dance of observation and action, quiet creativity meeting bold expression. Finally it earned an A+.
At the end of the term, both boys received positive comments from Mrs. Clark. “Jason,” she wrote, “your growth in confidence has been remarkable.” For Mark: “You’ve developed a precious gift, the ability to help others shine.” Seeing the comments, they felt a wave of happiness sweeping over them. But the real reward sat at their usual lunch table now always full of classmates. Jason still sketched, but now he did it surrounded by friends who appreciated both his art and his quiet wisdom. Mark still led, but with a new understanding that true teamwork meant making space for every voice

Just as he reached the top of the slope, his foot slipped. Jason lost his balance and fell down the rocky slope, rolling over and over until he finally came to a stop at the bottom. The others gasped in horror. Alice quickly rushed down to him, checking for injuries. “Jason, are you okay?” she asked, her voice trembling. Leo and Eric followed closely behind, their faces pale with worry. Fortunately, Jason seemed to have only suffered a few scrapes and bruises, but he was clearly in pain and couldn’t stand up on his own.
With the first aid finished, they realized a new challenge: how to get back. The slope was too steep and slippery for Jason to climb up alone. “We need to find a safer way,” Leo said, looking around. They noticed a narrow path that seemed to lead back to the main trail, which was a relief. Eric volunteered to stay with Jason while Alice and Leo went ahead to explore the path. “Don’t worry,” Alice reassured Jason, “we’ll come back for you soon.” After what seemed like ages, they returned and guided everyone safely back to the campsite, where the teachers were waiting anxiously.

【答案】One possible version:
The crowd roaring with the name of “Aaron”, I was on the edge of giving up. However, the sun cast Aaron’s image over me, reminding me that I would always be walking in his shadow if I couldn’t prove myself. Unwilling to quit at this crucial moment, I made quick adjustments. Exhausted as I was, I calmed myself down, gritted my teeth and strove to catch every ball. Then came the chance. The ball made contact with my racket and flew over Aaron’s head. Greatly astonished, he could do nothing but witness his undefeated status as reigning champion being erased by his younger brother.
The whistle blew for the end of the match and I achieved the final victory. “I made it!” I yelled and jumped into the air, my face lit up with excitement. Meeting my joyful eyes, Aaron walked over, patted my shoulder and thumbed up at me, “Congratulations!” “Thank you!” I replied, a toothy smile spreading across my sweaty face. Just then a round of applause and cheers rang through the whole court, “Well done, Dallon! ” Hearing my name echoing in the air, I knew that I’d proved myself by freeing myself from the title of “Aaron’s younger brother”.

The crowd’s laughter faded as the head judge stood up, microphone in hand. “What an inspiring idea!” he exclaimed. “Though your VR project faced setbacks, your passion for the environment truly shines. We can turn this virtual failure into a real - world success.” He proposed that the school initiate a tree - planting project. The audience burst into applause, and excitement filled the air. Maya and I exchanged excited glances, our disappointment replaced by newfound determination.
Two weeks later, volunteers arrived at the school with gardening tools and young trees. Students from different grades gathered, eager to contribute. Maya and I led the way, showing others how to dig holes and plant saplings. The girl with the stuffed owl was there, her eyes bright with enthusiasm.

【答案】
I wiped them, searching for a reason to avoid crossing the water. After putting them on again, Sam was still there. “I don’t want any juice!” I said. Sam nodded understandingly. “Fine!” he spoke pleasantly and stood waiting. Frustrated by my own weakness, I took a deep breath, preparing myself to jump across the water. Once again, fear overwhelmed me. I looked towards where the others sat. Much to my relief, they still had their backs turned; only Sam stood opposite me, looking straight into my eyes, patiently.
Then I gathered my courage, took a step forward, and jumped lightly across the channel. A slight slip of my heel on a stone was quickly steadied by Sam’s strong forearm against my back. As I glanced up, I couldn’t help but notice Sam’s towering height — the tallest among us. “Well done, Jimmy!” he said, nodding in approval while praising me for my bravery. Meanwhile, he handed me a bottle of juice. While drinking it, I felt a sense of pride in myself and gratitude towards Sam for his kindness.

【答案】
Looking at him, I said anxiously, “Larry. I’m afraid the dog is suffering too much.” The words slipped out of my mouth with a mix of frustration and desperation. Larry replied with inappropriate calmness, “I know, I haven’t seen him move all morning.” I couldn’t understand how Larry, who had cared for the dog all this time, could remain so indifferent to his fate. I then left the shop with a heavy heart. Driving home, my kids kept asking me whether Old Red would be okay. I nodded sympathetically, and we all prayed for him. One day later Larry’s wife called, “Guess what?” “After you left that day, Larry found a vet online,” she said and paused.
“Then the vet gave him a shot. He’s improving now.” Larry’s wife added excitedly. On hearing these words, I sighed with relief. I thanked her for the good news and joked, “Your husband is really sharp-tongued but tender-hearted.” With Larry’s continual help, Old Red’s tail wagged weakly again. Seeing Larry kneel beside the dog, gently offering him food, his mother, though initially fearful, was touched and softened. It was love that broke barriers, proving that compassion could melt even the coldest fears. From that day on, Old Red had not only just a carpet by the shop, but a home where he belonged—a testament to the power of kindness to transform lives.

Passage 2
Passage 3
Passage 4

Passage 2

So, Eli and Maya decided to fight to keep the bookstore. They organized a petition and gathered signatures from the community, showing the company and the local government how much the bookstore meant to everyone. They also held events at the bookstore, inviting local artists and musicians to perform and draw attention to their cause. Their efforts paid off, and the big company eventually backed down. The shopping mall project was canceled, and the bookstore was saved.
This project led to a big success. The bookstore became even more popular, with more people coming to visit and participate in the story nights. The sense of community and togetherness grew stronger, as people realized the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving the unique charm of their neighborhood. Eli and Maya's bookstore continued to thrive, not just as a place to buy books, but as a symbol of resilience, hope, and the power of coming together to make a difference. They had proven that with passion and determination, anything is possible, and that sometimes, the smallest of places can have the biggest impact on people's lives.
