When Tori Cassady was a child, her family would drive to Yellowstone National Park every other summer. There, she was fascinated by the colorful geothermal (地热的) pools. “I kept wondering what could possibly live in there,” she recalls. That small idea has now grown into an adult research goal.
Cassady, a senior at the University of Iowa, will enter graduate school this fall to study cyanobacteria (蓝藻细菌)-tiny organisms that live in Yellowstone’s hot pools and are believed to be among the earliest life-forms on Earth. Her research seeks to understand how life on our planet originated and evolved, a question that has fascinated scientists for generations.
Originally, Cassady planned to study medicine. That changed when she took a Microbiology class. “I didn’t know microbiology was a field of study until then,” she says. She switched her major and began searching for a professor whose interests matched hers. She found Ingrid Ukstins, a volcanologist who has done research in planetary geology. The two hit it off immediately; the conversation during their first meeting lasted over an hour, making Cassady late for her next class.
Together, they analyzed rock samples taken from beneath Auckland, New Zealand. Cassady learned to use an electron microprobe, a sophisticated instrument that allows her to examine olivine (橄榄石). By studying element diffusion in olivine, she could tell what was happening in the magma (岩浆) before a volcanic eruption. “I had a ball doing the research,” she says. She and another student spent nights and weekends examining over 1,000 samples, leaving piles of coffee cups behind.
Cassady also earned a minor in music, playing the violin in a string quartet. “It helped me balance my science brain with my music brain,” she explains. Now, she is preparing to study at the University of Southern California. Her future research will take her back to Yellowstone, where she will investigate how ancient cyanobacteria are preserved in rock records. “We wouldn’t be here without the changes these bacteria created,” Cassady says. “Earth is a microbial planet, and we are just guests in it.”
24. Why did Cassady decide to study cyanobacteria?
A. She planned to study medicine further.
B. She liked visiting Yellowstone National Park.
C. She was curious about the geothermal pools.
D. She wanted to know some famous professors.
25. What did Cassady and Ukstins do during their first meeting?
A. They analyzed rock samples. B. They had a pleasant conversation.
C. They took a microbiology class. D. They discussed medical topics.
26. What kind of person is Cassady?
A. Brave. B. Confident. C. Humorous. D. Hardworking.
27. What will Cassady’s future work focus on?
A. Violin performance skills. B. Magma movement patterns.
C. Medical treatment methods. D. Ancient cyanobacteria in rocks.
C 25. B 26. D 27. D

A whale song discovered on decades-old audio equipment could open up a new understanding of how the huge animals communicate, according to the researchers who say it’s the oldest such recording known. “The song is that of a humpback whale (座头鲸), and was recorded by some scientists in March 1949 in Bermuda,” said the researchers at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
“Just as significant is the sound of the surrounding ocean itself,” said Peter Tyack, a research scholar at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. “The ocean of the late 1940s was much quieter than the ocean of today, providing a different backdrop than scientists are used to hearing for a whale song,” he said. “The recovered recordings not only allow us to follow whale sounds, but they also tell us what the ocean soundscape was like in the late 1940s.” “They can also help scientists better understand how new human-made sounds, like increased shipping noise, affect the way whales communicate,” Tyack added.
“The scientists on a research vessel at the time were testing sonar systems and performing acoustic experiments along with the U.S. Office of Naval Research when they captured the sounds,” said Ashley Jester, director of research data and library services at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The scientists didn't know what they were hearing, but they decided to record and save the sounds anyway. “They were curious, so they kept this recorder running. They even made time to make recordings where they weren't making any noise from their ships on purpose just to hear as much as they could,” said Jester. The scientists of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution discovered the song while digitizing old audio recordings.
“The discovery of the long-lost whale song from a quieter ocean could be a jumping-off point to better understanding the sounds the animals make today,” said Hansen Johnson, a research scientist at the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium. “And, you know, it’s just beautiful to listen to and has really inspired a lot of people to be curious about the ocean, and care about ocean life in general,” said Johnson, who was not involved in the research.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To list an argument. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To explain the reason. D. To show a phenomenon.
29. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The features of whales' sounds. B. The influences of shipping noise.
C. The meaning of recording whales. D. The significance of the recordings.
30. Which word can best describe the process of the initial discovery of the sounds?
A. Normal. B. Accidental. C. Systematic. D. Complex.
31. What is Johnson's attitude to the discovery?
A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.
B 29. D 30. B 31. C

About 50 residents of a community outside Chile's capital spent Saturday trying their best to power an entirely human-operated artificial intelligence (AI) website that could answer questions and make silly pictures on command, in a message to highlight the environmental toll of AI data centers in the region.
The organizers say the 12-hour project fielded more than 25,000 requests from around the world. Asking the AI website to generate an image of a sloth (树懒)playing in the snow didn't instantly produce an output, as other AI websites would. Instead, someone responded in Spanish to wait a few moments and reminded the user that a human was responding. Then came a drawing about 10 minutes later: a penciled sketch of a cute sloth in a pile of snowballs, with its claws catching one and about to throw it.
“The goal is to highlight the hidden water footprint behind AI prompting (提示) and encourage more responsible use,” said a statement from organizer Lorena Antiman of the environmental group Corporación NGEN.
The answers came from the volunteers working on laptops in a community center in Quilicura, a district at the urban edge of Santiago that has become a data center hub. The website responded quickly to questions that drew on residents' cultural knowledge, like how to make Chilean sopaipillas, a fried pastry. When they didn't know the answer, they walked around the room to see if someone else did.
“The AI website isn't about always having an instant answer. It's about recognizing that not every question needs one,” Antiman said. When residents don't know something, they can say so, share perspectives, or respond with curiosity rather than certainty. She said it was not designed to reject the valuable uses of AI but to think more about the impacts of so much “casual prompting” on water-stressed places like Quilicura.
The backdrop behind the campaign is a debate, in Chile and elsewhere, about the heavy costs of AI usage. Data center computer chips running AI systems require huge amounts of electricity and some also use large volumes of water for cooling, with usage varying depending on locations and types of equipment.
32. Which can explain the underlined word “toll” in paragraph 1?
A. Bad effect. B. Great value.
C. Complex condition. D. Rapid development.
33. What is the aim of the campaign?
A. To draw pictures for fun. B. To develop a new chatbot.
C. To offer help to the locals. D. To call for the green use of AI.
34. What does Antiman think is the important part of the campaign?
A. Drawing pictures for users. B. Thinking about AI's impacts.
C. Rejecting AI's valuable uses. D. Answering questions instantly.
35. What may be the best title for the text?
A. The Development of AI in Chile B. A New Application of AI in Chile
C. An AI Website Powered by Humans D. The Contribution of Volunteers to AI
A 33. D 34. B 35. C

根据第五段中“It's about recognizing that not every question needs one,” Antiman said. When residents don't know something, they can say so, share perspectives, or respond with curiosity rather than certainty. She said it was not designed to reject the valuable uses of AI but to think more about the impacts of so much “casual prompting” on water-stressed places like Quilicura.

上文“It is important to listen to what they really think about reading. (重要的是要倾听他们对于阅读的真实想法。)”指出倾听儿童和青少年真实看法的重要性,下文“In 2025, 58,398 young people aged 8 to 18 told us their opinions on reading in their free time. (在2025年,58398名年龄在8至18岁之间的年轻人向我们表达了他们对于空余时间阅读的看法。)”给出2025年的具体调研数据,因此C项“This helps us understand the reasons behind the main data. (这有助于我们理解主要数据背后的原因。)”符合语境,说明倾听看法对调研的作用,将倾听看法与数据收集联系起来,承上启下。
【37题详解】
上文“Their words show the close connection among different reasons that influence whether they take part in reading. Feelings, thinking, behavior, social situations and environment affect different readers in different ways. (他们的话表明影响人们是否参与阅读的各种因素之间存在着紧密的联系。情感、思维、行为、社会环境以及外部条件会对不同的读者产生不同的影响。)”指出影响阅读的因素相互关联,且对不同读者影响方式不同,下文“Here is an introduction to them. (以下是关于它们的介绍。)”引出下一段对读者的分类说明,因此B项“Readers can therefore be divided into three major groups. (因此读者主要可分为三组。)”符合语境,承接上文的影响方式不同,引出下文对三类读者的描述。
【38题详解】
下文“They have good reading habits, can choose what to read, and get support and encouragement from family, teachers and classmates. (他们有着良好的阅读习惯,能够自主选择阅读内容,并且能从家人、老师和同学那里获得支持与鼓励。)”介绍第一类读者的积极特征,因此E项“Keen readers think reading brings them joy, relaxation and peace. (热衷型读者认为阅读能带来快乐、放松与平静。)”符合语境,可作为该类读者的定义,与下一句衔接紧密,其中的Keen readers是下文They指代的对象。
【39题详解】
上文“Ambivalent (矛盾的) readers have the weakest connection with reading. (矛盾型读者与阅读的联系最弱。)”概括矛盾型读者的特质,下文“Whether they enjoy reading depends much on conditions and can be easily influenced. (他们是否喜欢阅读很大程度上取决于环境因素,并且很容易受到这些因素的影响。)”继续说明他们易受外界因素影响,因此G项“They are influenced by both good and bad feelings at the same time. (他们同时受到积极和消极情绪的影响。)”符合语境,解释了这类读者联系最弱的原因,与上下文逻辑连贯,其中的They指代上文的Ambivalent readers。
【40题详解】
上文完成对三类读者的分类描述,下文“At the same time, for all readers, the right to choose books, easy chances to read, good environments and no pressure are very important to their reading experience. In a word, the results show that we need proper ways to build a better reading culture to meet the needs of all children and young people. (同时,对于所有读者而言,选择书籍的权利、便捷的阅读机会、良好的阅读环境以及没有压力等因素,对他们的阅读体验来说都非常重要。总之,研究结果表明,我们需要采取适当的方法来构建更良好的阅读文化,以满足所有儿童和青少年的需求。)”转而提到影响阅读体验的其他因素,并呼吁针对需求采取适当措施,因此F项“In this case, we should use different ways to help different readers. (因此,我们应采用不同方式帮助不同读者。)”符合语境,总结上文分类的意义,与下一句形成并列,引出针对性的解决思路。

Dear Jack,
How is everything going? I’m writing to inform you that I intend to pick up photography in the upcoming summer vacation.
Photography enables us to freeze precious moments and capture natural scenery. I choose it partly because I’m fascinated with outdoor sightseeing, through which I can preserve wonderful views. What’s more, taking photos cultivates my insight into trivial beauty ignored by most people.
I plan to attend an online beginner course in the morning to grasp fundamental techniques. On weekends, I’ll head outdoors for shooting and consult an experienced photographer.
Eager for your reply, could you share your summer arrangements?
Yours,

Last year, I participated in a week-long volunteer program at a local animal shelter along with several other high school students from different schools. Among them was a boy named Oliver, who was quiet and seldom spoke. He always stayed in the corner, brushing the cats or cleaning the cages silently. I didn't pay much attention to him at first, as I was busy making friends with more outgoing volunteers.
On the second day, after lunch, I reached into my backpack for my favorite water bottle-a blue one with a white lid (盖子) that I had used for nearly three years. It was not there. I searched every pocket twice, growing more anxious with each passing minute. That bottle had been with me through every soccer practice and every exam. I couldn't believe I had lost it.
The next morning, during the break, I noticed Oliver sitting on a bench near the dog run, drinking fromn a bottle that looked exactly like mine-the blue body with a white lid. My heart sank. Feeling upset and betrayed, I marched over to him. “Why did you take my water bottle without asking?" I scoded, with my voice louder than I intended.
Oliver's face turned red. He looked down at the bottle in his hands, then back at me,and said,“This is mine. It was a gift from my grandmother before she passed away. See this small scratch here. I made it when I was little.”He pointed to a tiny scratch near the bottom.I leaned in and looked closely. I had never noticed a scratch on my bottle because there wasn't one.
So I checked my backpack again. This time, I reached into the very bottom of it and found my own bottle buried deep inside, which was placed in the pocket of my coat. At that moment, I felt a wave of shame washing over me. I had accused Oliver without knowing the truth.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I went to apologize to Oliver right away.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From that day on, Oliver and I became close friends.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I went to apologize to Oliver right away. Head hanging low, I apologized sincerely for my rude accusation and careless judgment. I admitted that I was too anxious and jumpy, blaming him without checking the truth first. To my great relief, Oliver smiled gently and accepted my apology. He told me he did not mind my mistake at all. To make up for my fault, I offered to work with him for the rest of the volunteer days. Surprisingly, the quiet boy turned out to be patient and warm-hearted as we fed stray dogs and cleaned cages together.
From that day on, Oliver and I became close friends. I gradually learned more about him. He loved animals deeply and volunteered here every vacation to offer help. His kindness and carefulness deeply impressed me. I no longer judged people by their quiet appearance. Instead, I took time to know others patiently. This small misunderstanding taught me a precious lesson: never jump to conclusions before figuring out the whole truth, for trust and respect are the foundation of true friendship.
