Moonmilk, a cake and ice cream shop nearby, was hiring, so I went in for a trial shift. I practiced scooping ice cream for 20 minutes and talked to the manager for 40 minutes about our favorite pizza spots. I immediately knew this place was special. While I originally just set out to earn some extra money during the summer, the bonds and memories I made there turned out to be more valuable than any paycheck. Once, a man who works for the union of the local movie theater came in to place an order. He wanted a cake to celebrate a victory he’d had in stopping the theater from being kicked out by its landlord. Moonmilk’s owner was touched by the story and refused payment for the cake. Later, the union leader – so moved by the gesture – delivered free movie tickets to Moonmilk staff. The older women customers are among my favorites. Their concern is disarming; they often wonder if I’m okay and tell me I look tired. One regular, always alone and smiling, is kind and generous, ordering methodically and always declaring we have the best ice cream in the city. There’s also the guy who comes in frequently to ask if we have the chocolate orange flavor – that we only ever have at Christmas. I always have to say no, but his persistence brings me joy, especially on days when I’m tired. As with any job, there are unpleasant moments. My wrist (手腕) often hurts from repeatedly scooping out ice cream, and it’s always annoying when a group of people come in and take way too long to order, holding up all the others waiting. In the fall, my full-time job’s schedule becomes more demanding and I know I’ll have to reduce my shifts. I’ll miss the busyness of the summer season and will run into my favorite customers less often. The winter months are long and the owner has spoken about days when only three people come in. But my experience working at this popular spot has helped me feel more connected to my local community. The interactions and connections I’ve made will keep me going until at least next summer. Hopefully, the orange chocolate ice cream has returned by then. 51. What initially drew the author to work at Moonmilk? A. A love for cake and ice cream. B. The chance to earn extra money. C. A personal connection to the shop. D. The manager’s engaging personality. 52. What does the underlined word “disarming” in paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Heartwarming. B. Surprising. C. Distracting. D. Embarrassing. 53. How does the author feel about working fewer shifts in the winter? A. Eager. B. Relieved. C. Disappointed. D. Anxious. 54. What lasting effect did the job at Moonmilk have on the author? A. A renewed sense of purpose. B. Improved interpersonal skills. C. A greater sense of belonging. D. A strengthened sense of duty. 55. Why does the author write this passage? A. To describe the daily routine at Moonmilk. B. To explain how to handle difficult customers. C. To share a meaningful experience that changed her. D. To advertise Moonmilk as a great workplace for her. B Long before dinosaurs lived on Earth, the land looked very different from today. Around 500 million years ago, most of Earth’s surface was bare rock and dry soil, and life existed almost entirely in the oceans. Then something amazing happened: plants began to grow on land. The journey of plants started with simple green life-forms like algae (藻类), which have been living in oceans and lakes for over a billion years. Using sunlight, water and CO₂, algae make sugars as well as oxygen through photosynthesis At first, Earth’s atmosphere had little oxygen, but algae, along with some bacteria, changed that over millions of years. This made it possible for larger and more complex life forms to appear. The first true plants developed from green algae 470 million years ago. Living in shallow water near shores, they were sometimes underwater and sometimes above the surface. Slowly, they adapted to dry land with many new features. These included stronger cell walls, which enabled plants to stand upright against gravity. They also developed rootlike structures to hold onto the soil and take water and nutrients. The earliest land plants stayed close to the ground. Some, like Cooksonia, had small stems only about 2.5 to 5 centimeters tall. Though small, these plants made a big impact. Besides adding oxygen to the air, they used their roots to break down rocks into soil. This process, called weathering, created richer soil that could support more life. The plants also provided homes and food sources for animals moving from oceans onto land. Around 420 million years ago, plants developed tiny tubes that move water and nutrients upward from the roots to the leaves. This allowed plants to grow taller and stronger. By about 360 million years ago, forests covered much of Earth. Another big leap happened around 380 million years ago with the development of seeds. This meant plants could reproduce without needing water for fertilization. Flowering plants then came along about 140 million years ago. Their flowers attracted animals to spread pollen, and their fruits helped protect the seeds. Plants changed the atmosphere, built soil and created ecosystems that allowed animals to develop on land. Thanks to plant evolution, Earth became a green planet full of diverse life. 56. According to the text, what role did algae play in Earth’s history? A. They reduced the number of bacteria in the oceans. B. They helped increase oxygen in the atmosphere. C. They evolved directly into complex life forms. D. They significantly decreased CO2 levels in the air. 57. Why were early land plants able to stand upright? A. They had deep root systems. B. They took in enough sunlight. C. They lived in shallow water. D. They developed stronger cell walls. 58. What is the main idea of paragraph 4? A. The formation of soil through weathering. B. The multiple effects of early land plants. C. The challenges early land plants faced. D. The role of plants in supporting animal life. 59. What can be inferred from the text about the period when seeds first appeared? A. Plants started to develop tiny tubes. B. Forests spread across most of Earth’s land. C. Plants could reproduce without depending on water. D. Flowering plants were already common on Earth. 60. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. How weathering created soil. B. The rise of flowering plants. C. The first animals on land. D. Seeding the future. C Being attractive isn’t usually considered much of a disadvantage in today’s world. Actually, there is the endless potential benefit about it, but researchers have found one area that being pretty makes life a challenge: securing yourself a boring, low-paying job. This stands in contrast to a large body of research that attractiveness, in general, helps candidates in the selection process. For the most part good looks is a blessing. We treat pretty people more favorably in general, often vote for them more in elections, and pay them more in their professions. The research suggests that attractive people may be discriminated against in selection for relatively less desirable jobs. Researchers carried out four experiments involving more than 750 participants, including university students and managers who make hiring decisions in the real world. Participants were shown photos of two potential job candidates, one attractive and the other unattractive. Participants were then asked a series of questions designed to measure their opinions of the job candidates and whether they would hire these candidates for a less-than-desirable job. The less desirable jobs included a warehouse worker, housekeeper, customer service representative and the more desirable jobs included things like a manager, project director, IT technician. In all experiments where they were asked, participants were significantly less likely to hire the attractive candidate for the less desirable job and more likely to hire the attractive candidate for the more desirable job. Ms Lee said, “In the selection decision for an undesirable job, decision makers were more likely to choose the unattractive individual over the attractive individual.” Co-author Dr Madan Pillutla said, “It is interesting that decision makers consider others’ opinions in their decisions. They thought that attractive individuals would want better outcomes, and therefore would be less satisfied, so they favored unattractive candidates when selecting for a less desirable job.” The research also suggests the established view that attractive candidates are favored when applying for jobs that might be limited to high-level jobs. 61. What do people generally think of being attractive? A. It is a blessing. B. It is not important. C. It is a disadvantage. D. It has nothing to do with jobs. 62. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. The participants of the experiment. B. The importance of the experiment. C. The process of the experiment. D. The result of the experiment. 63. An ordinary-looking graduate may have an advantage when applying for ________. A. a manager B. an IT technician C. a warehouse worker D. a project director 64. Why are less attractive applicants preferred for less desirable jobs? A. Because they are more hardworking. B. Because they will be more satisfied. C. Because they will want better outcomes. D. Because they have no requirements at all. 65. Which of the following agrees with the research? A. Attractive people are more fit for high-level jobs. B. Less attractive people are easy to find high-level jobs. C. Attractive people can always be hired when applying for jobs. D. Less attractive people can easily get highly paid if they work hard. Papa, as a son of a dirt poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, he was determined that none of his children would be denied an education. Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point. Then came the moment — the time to share the day’s new learning. Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen. “Felice,” he’d say, “tell me what you learned today.” “I learned that the population of Nepal is...” Silence. Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation of the world would depend upon it. “The population of Nepal. Hmm. Well...” he’d say. “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal. This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts. As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another’s education. And by looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming our value, giving us a sense of dignity, Papa was unquestionably our most influential teacher. Later during my training as a future teacher, I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting what Papa had known all along — the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. 66. What did the author’s father think of his children’s education? (no more than 10 words) ________________________________________________________________ 67. What does the underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refer to? C. B 57. D 58. B 59. C 60. 根据第二段“Using sunlight, water and CO₂, algae make sugars as well as oxygen through photosynthesis. At first, Earth's atmosphere had little oxygen, but algae, along with some bacteria, changed that over millions of years. (藻类利用阳光、水和二氧化碳通过光合作用制造糖和氧气。起初,地球大气层中几乎没有氧气,但藻类和一些细菌在数百万年间改变了这一点。)”可知,藻类通过光合作用帮助增加了大气中的氧气含量。 【57题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“These included stronger cell walls, which enabled plants to stand upright against gravity. (这些新特征包括更坚固的细胞壁,使植物能够抵抗重力直立生长。)”可知,早期陆地植物能够直立是因为它们发展出了更坚固的细胞壁。 【58题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段“Besides adding oxygen to the air, they used their roots to break down rocks into soil. This process, called weathering, created richer soil that could support more life. The plants also provided homes and food sources for animals moving from oceans onto land. (除了向空气中补充氧气外,它们还利用根系将岩石分解为土壤。这一被称为风化的过程形成了更肥沃的土壤,从而能够支持更多的生命生长。这些植物也为从海洋迁徙至陆地的动物提供了栖息地和食物来源。)”可知,本段主要讲述了早期陆地植物产生的多方面影响,包括增加氧气、形成土壤、为动物提供栖息地和食物等。 【59题详解】 推理判断题。根据第六段“Another big leap happened around 380 million years ago with the development of seeds. This meant plants could reproduce without needing water for fertilization. 61. A 62. C 63. C 64. B 65. 根据第二段中“For the most part good looks is a blessing. We treat pretty people more favorably in general, often vote for them more in elections, and pay them more in their professions. (在大多数情况下,好长相是一种福气。我们通常对漂亮的人更友好,在选举中更常投票给他们,在职业中也付给他们更多的薪水。)”可知,人们普遍认为有吸引力是一种福气。 【62题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段“Researchers carried out four experiments involving more than 750 participants, including university students and managers who make hiring decisions in the real world. Participants were shown photos of two potential job candidates, one attractive and the other unattractive. Participants were then asked a series of questions designed to measure their opinions of the job candidates and whether they would hire these candidates for a less-than-desirable job. 根据第四段“The less desirable jobs included a warehouse worker, housekeeper, customer service representative and the more desirable jobs included things like a manager, project director, IT technician. In all experiments where they were asked, participants were significantly less likely to hire the attractive candidate for the less desirable job and more likely to hire the attractive candidate for the more desirable job. (不太理想的工作岗位包括仓库工人、客房服务员和客户服务代表;而更理想的工作岗位则包括经理、项目总监和IT技术员等职位。在所有被要求进行的实验中,参与者雇佣具有吸引力的候选人担任不太理想职位的可能性显著降低,而雇佣其担任更理想职位的可能性则显著增加。)”可知,外表普通的求职者在申请仓库工人这类不太理想的工作时更有优势。 【64题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“They thought that attractive individuals would want better outcomes, and therefore would be less satisfied, so they favored unattractive candidates when selecting for a less desirable job. (他们认为有吸引力的人会想要更好的结果,因此会不太满意,所以在选择不太理想的工作时他们更青睐没有吸引力的候选人。)”可知,决策者选择外表不那么吸引人的求职者是因为他们认为这些人会对工作更满意。 【65题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“The research also suggests the established view that attractive candidates are favored when applying for jobs that might be limited to high-level jobs. (该研究还支持了一个已有的观点,即有吸引力的求职者在申请可能仅限于高层的工作时更受青睐。)”可知,研究表明有吸引力的人更适合高层工作。 第Ⅱ卷 注意事项: 1.用黑色墨水的钢笔或签字笔将答案写在答题卡上。 2.本卷共6小题, 共30分。 第四部分:写作 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10分) 阅读短文, 按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Papa, as a son of a dirt poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. (no more than 2 words) ________________________________________________________________ 68. Why did the author’s father ask the family to search for Nepal on the map? (no more than 15 words) ________________________________________________________________ 69. What has served the author well all his life? (no more than 8 words) ________________________________________________________________ 70. How are you inspired by the author’s father? Please explain. (no more than 25 words) ________________________________________________________________ 【答案】66. - He thought none of his children should be denied an education. - He was determined that all his children must receive education. - Education was so important that every child must get it. - He believed every child deserved a chance to learn. 67. - Daily news. - The news. 68. - To find out where Nepal is located on the map. - To locate Nepal and make the fact more concrete. - To make sure they truly understood the new fact. - To help them clearly understand what they had learned. 69. - His father’s technique of continual learning. - The value of lifelong learning. - His father’s educational method. - Papa’s way of teaching. 70. - I’m inspired to value daily learning and make it a family activity, just like Papa did. - He teaches me to listen patiently and help others discover knowledge themselves. - I learn that small daily habits, like sharing new facts, can build strong character. - His respect for children’s input reminds me to treat everyone’s ideas with dignity. - I will follow his example: turn every dinner into a chance to learn together. 根据第一段“So, he was determined that none of his children would be denied an education. (因此,他下定决心,绝不让自己的任何一个孩子失去受教育的机会。)”可知,作者的父亲认为他的孩子们都不应该被剥夺受教育的权利,即他决心让所有孩子都接受教育,认为教育对每个孩子都很重要,每个孩子都应有机会学习。 【67题详解】 考查词句猜测。根据第二段“We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. (我们会谈论当天的新闻;无论它多么微不足道,都绝不会被轻视。)”可知,“it”指代的是“每日新闻”或“新闻”。 【68题详解】 考查细节理解。根据倒数第四段““Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal. (“拿来地图;我们看看尼泊尔在哪儿。”于是全家人开始一起查找尼泊尔的位置。)”和倒数第三段“Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts. (只有当我们对至少五六个这样的事实有了清晰的理解之后,晚餐才会结束。)”可知,作者的父亲让家人在地图上寻找尼泊尔,是为了确定尼泊尔在地图上的位置,确保他们真正理解了这个新事实,帮助他们清楚地理解所学内容。 【69题详解】 考查细节理解。根据最后一段“They were imparting what Papa had known all along — the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Chris Any thoughts? Posted on April 21nd, 2026 9:00 PM I can’t understand why some people spend their whole life doing just one thing. I know these activities require time and effort to do, but I’d rather try as many different things as possible. I don’t want to regret things when I’m old! Li Jin Reply to Chris Posted on April 22nd, 2026 10:00 AM Hi, Chris,… ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version 1: Hi, Chris, I totally agree with you. Trying as many different things as possible is a great way to live life to the fullest. Take my cousin as an example. He has tried painting, playing guitar, and even learning to cook. Each new skill brought him joy and new friends. He told me that even though he’s not an expert in any of them, he has no regrets because he truly enjoyed the journey. If we only do one thing, we might miss other passions that suit us better. Life is short, so why not explore more? I really hope to hear more about your experiences. Let’s keep this conversation going! Possible version 2: Hi, Chris, I partly agree with you. Trying different things is exciting and helps us find our true interests. However, I also believe that focusing on one thing can bring deep satisfaction. For example, my English teacher has been teaching for twenty years. She once told me that she tried different jobs in her twenties, but after she chose teaching, she found her true calling. Now her students love her and she feels proud of her work. So I think we should explore when we are young, but once we find what we love, it’s okay to stick with it. Looking forward to your reply. Let’s discuss more! Possible version 3: Hi, Chris, I understand your point, but I’m afraid I don’t agree. I believe spending a lifetime on one thing can lead to real mastery and lasting happiness. Take the scientist Yuan Longping for example. He spent most of his life researching rice and finally developed hybrid rice, which fed billions of people. He once said that he never regretted his choice because he saw the results of his hard work. Trying many things may be fun, but depth matters more than breadth. Without focus, we may never achieve anything truly great. I’d love to hear what you think about this. Hope to get your reply soon! 词汇积累(参照范文2) 不同的:different→diverse/multiple 令人兴奋的:exciting→thrilling 满足:satisfaction→contentment 坚持:stick with →hold on to 2. However, I also believe that focusing on one thing can bring deep satisfaction. However, I also have a firm belief that focusing on one thing can bring deep satisfaction. 1】However, I also believe that focusing on one thing can bring deep satisfaction.
