Mr Stevens walked around the class handing out maths books. Then he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared (盯着看) back. “What are you waiting for? Get started!” he said.
We looked at him, confused (困惑的). A student asked, “Mr Stevens, aren’t you going to teach us first?” Mr Stevens replied, “You’re smart kids. Open the book and get to it. If you have any questions, raise your hand, and I’ll come to help you.”
My friend Paul and I opened our books to the first page. A competition began. Paul and I spent all our free time at home working through the lessons. Mr Stevens, true to his word, helped anyone who had a problem. It was not a normal way of teaching but it worked well. Paul and I worked like dogs and finished two and a half maths books that first year.
It was a turning point in my life. Mr Stevens made me realise that I was good at maths and that I was able to reach the top of any class I attended. I kept learning that way all through my high school and university.
I’ve carried Mr Stevens’ lesson with me all my life. Whenever I am faced with a new challenge, I think of the first maths class of my junior high school. Instead of sitting around, I just get started. Then before I know it, the challenge has been dealt with.
5. What was Mr Stevens’ teaching method?
A. Playing games with the students.
B. Asking questions to help the students think.
C. Starting some competitions at the beginning.
D. Encouraging the students to learn by themselves first.
6. How was Mr Stevens’ teaching method according to Paragraph 3?
A. Helpful. B. Difficult. C. Common. D. Popular.
7. What does the writer learn from Mr Stevens’ teaching method?
A. Try his best to realise his dream. B. Ask others for advice.
C. Solve problems on his own. D. Think over to make a decision.
8. What’s the best title for the text?
A. The First Day of Maths Class: A Boring Lesson
B. Just Get Started: The Lesson to deal with Challenges
C. Mr Stevens’ Teaching Method: Start Competitions
D. Start Early: How I Improve Maths with Help
【答案】5. D 6. A 7. C 8. B
Stevens的话:“You’re smart kids. Open the book and get to it... If you have any questions... I’ll come to help you.”,以及第三段描述的他和朋友自学课本的情景,可以看出他的教学方法是鼓励学生先自主学习。
【6题详解】
第三段明确指出:“It was not a normal way of teaching but it worked well.”,说明这种教学方法虽然不寻常,但效果很好,对作者是有帮助的。
【7题详解】
最后一段提到:“Whenever I am faced with a new challenge... Instead of sitting around, I just get started. Then before I know it, the challenge has been dealt with.”,说明作者从中学到的是面对问题要立即着手解决,即独立解决问题。
【8题详解】
文章通过回忆第一堂数学课的经历,引出了核心观点:面对挑战不要等待,而是要“Just Get Started”(立即开始)。最后一段也再次强调了这一教训伴随作者一生。因此,“Just Get Started: The Lesson to deal with Challenges”是最贴切的标题。

You may think it is impossible for people in flats to have a beautiful garden. That’s not true! The rooftop (屋顶) gardens are becoming more and more popular in big cities now. It is a nice way to turn an empty space into a pretty and relaxing area.
Rooftop gardens seem very modern. But in fact, they have a long history. More than 2,000 years ago, ancient people started to build rooftop gardens. Those gardens had the same purpose. If an enemy army attacked the city, they might destroy (摧毁) the city’s food which could keep people alive. So the advice of moving the farming places to the top of the houses was given.
Today’s rooftop gardens are different from the old ones. They also have other uses. For example, the plants in the garden take in more heat. The temperature in the house below is usually lower in summer. So the air conditioner (空调) is less often used. More energy can be saved.
However, a rooftop garden needs more care. First of all, build a fence (栅栏) around it. The wind may blow your plants down from the roof. You don’t want anyone to get hurt, do you? Also, remember that rooftop gardens get more sunshine. If you have plants that shouldn’t stay in the sun for too long, you may have to put them in the shade (阴) sometimes.
It’s not easy to look after a rooftop garden, but if you put your heart into it, you will make your little part of the city much nicer.
9. According to Paragraph 1, rooftop gardens ________.
A. make a mess in cities B. take up too much space
C. are not suitable for people living in flats D. have become popular in big cities recently
10. Why did ancient people build rooftop gardens?
A. To relax themselves. B. To protect the city’s food.
C. To grow more kinds of plants. D. To make the city look more beautiful.
11. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Today’s rooftop gardens are the same as the old ones.
B. Today’s rooftop gardens can help save energy.
C. With rooftop gardens the air conditioner is hardly used.
D. Rooftop gardens make the houses below hotter in summer.
12. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this text?
A. To tell people the advantages of building rooftop gardens.
B. To introduce some famous rooftop gardens around the world.
C. To encourage people to build and take care of rooftop gardens.
D. To show the differences between modern and ancient rooftop gardens.

Do you know what a visa-free policy (免签政策) is? It is a policy that allows people from certain countries to enter another country without asking for a visa (签证) before they go. In 2024, China took this policy, and it brought many good things.
First of all, it greatly helps the tourism industry. Take Mr. and Mrs. Smith from the UK as an example. While flying to Australia, they heard about China’s 144-hour visa-free policy in Shanghai. They took this chance and went to Shanghai. While they were there, they were surprised by the beauty of the city, which mixes old buildings with modern tall buildings. This unexpected visit not only made their travel plan more special but also allowed them to experience Chinese culture directly. The couple said the visa-free policy made them visit Shanghai so easily. The money they spent at local restaurants, shops, and a hotel in the city centre also helped the local economy (经济).
Second, the visa-free policy is really good for business. Business people can save both time and money when asking for a visa. They can quickly travel to another country for business meetings or market research.
Finally, it promotes cultural exchange. When people are able to travel freely, they can directly learn about different cultures. They can take part in local festivals, try traditional foods, and make friends with local people. This allows people from different countries to better understand and value each other.
In short, the visa-free policy plays an important role in supporting global communication and development.
13. A visa-free policy means that people from certain countries ________.
A. must get a visa before entering another country
B. are not allowed to enter another country
C. can enter another country without getting a visa

Feeling joy is good for you and you can save it up and use it again.
A joy journal (快乐日志) is a special place for you to record anything and everything that brings you joy—what you like, what and who you appreciate (欣赏), what makes you laugh and feel happy. It’s your journal, so you can include whatever you like in it. Taking time to record what’s giving you joy helps you focus on that experience and draw even more happiness from it.
Psychologist Dr Reading says your joy journal can help you remember happier times when you’re feeling a bit sad, lonely or worried. “Turning the pages can make those same feelings of joy flood back, helping you feel better. It can remind you that this moment will pass and joy will come again soon.” Reading also explains, “By recording your joyful moments you can return to them whenever you need a little encouragement and relive them in the future.”
“I like drawing so I would draw pictures of me and my friends in my journal because they make me happy. I’d stick in my favourite chocolate wrappers (包装纸). My dad tells funny jokes so I could write the best ones in my journal too. I always record what makes us all happy and share them with my families too,” said Tanesha, aged 9.

D
D. need to bring more than one visa before travelling
14. In Paragraph 2, the writer shows the advantages of the visa-free policy by ________.
A. giving an example B. asking some questions
C. describing a fact D. listing some numbers
15. What does the underlined word “promote” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Include. B. Hide. C. Break. D. Improve.
16. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The requirements of the visa-free policy.
B. The history of China’s visa-free policy.
C. The benefits of China’s visa-free policy.
D. The differences among different visa policies.

Like Tanesha, you can keep a joy journal in your way. Now take your pen and record your joyful experiences to lift your mood (情绪)!
