In a 2024 survey, almost one in four people aged 16-24 in the country said they didn’t read regularly. What does it mean? What kind of brain structure do good readers actually have? New research published in the journal Neuroimage studied data from more than 1,000 people. The result shows differences in two parts of the brain’s left temporal lobe (左颞叶), which sits behind the left ear. One is the lobe’s front part known as the temporal pole (颞极) that helps connect and sort different information. For example, to understand the word “leg”, this brain region links how legs look, feel, and move. In people who read well, the left temporal pole is thinner than the right. The other is the Heschl’s gyrus (赫氏回). There lies the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) that processes sounds. Reading is not only mainly a visual skill. To match letters with speech sounds, we first need to notice the sounds of the spoken language. This phonological awareness (语音意识) has been known to make children’s reading development possible. A thinner Heschl’s gyrus has been related to dyslexia, which makes reading very difficult. However, the difference in thickness isn’t just about dyslexia. It is also true that having a thicker auditory cortex is related to being better at reading. Clearly, the structure of the brain can tell us a lot about reading skills. But it’s important to know that the brain changes when we learn something new or practice a skill we have had. For example, for young adults who studied languages a lot, the thickness of brain areas related to language increased. Similarly, reading is likely to shape the structure of the left Heschl’s gyrus. It’s necessary to consider what might happen to us if less attention is paid to reading. In other words, that cozy moment with a book in your armchair may not just be personal. 29. What do we know about the study published in Neuroilmage? A. It studied people aged 16-24 in the UK. B. It studied people with reading problems. C. It studied the ear structure of people who read. D. It studied the brains of a large number of people. 30. Why is the auditory cortex considered important for reading? A. It builds awareness of speech sounds. B. It controls how fast we read words. C. It supports building reading habits. D. It helps turn letters into images. 31. Which of the following ideas does the result of the study support? A. Less attention should be paid to skills like reading B. The structure of the brain decides reading skills. C. Reading can change some parts of the brain. D. Language learning strengthens the brain. C Uncle Tom sang a song about angels and Heaven with Eva in the garden. “Uncle Tom, sometimes I see those spirits,” said Eva. “They come to me in my sleep. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.” Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! That is a lot of laughter (笑,笑声). In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. They aren’t a place for people to watch interesting shows. They’re a place for people to practice laughing. People get together every morning. First they put their hands on their heads. Then they pretend (假装) to laugh. But after a short time, everyone is laughing naturally. They say they feel good after laughing together. Scientists believe that laughter is good for us. Why do they think so? For one thing, laughter is good exercise. When we laugh, we exercise many muscles (肌肉) in our body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs is the same as ten minutes of running. For another, when we laugh, we also breathe deeply (深呼吸). This helps us relax. That’s good for us, too. Why do we laugh? That’s a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often when they are in a group. 【答案】29. D 30. A 31. I’m going there.” Eva pointed her finger to the sky and said, “To the bright spirits.” Uncle Tom’s heart almost stopped. He looked at Eva. She didn’t look well she was often tired, her breath was short, she had a cough, and she was getting very thin. Miss Ophelia noticed this too, and she tried to tell Eva’s father, St Clare. “Stop that!” St Clare said. “Don’t you see that the child is only growing up? It’s what happens to children of her age.” “But she has that cough!” “That’s nothing. Maybe she has a little cold,” St Clare said. Eva’s health got even worse. She became very weak and she could hardly leave the house, so St Clare sent her to the hospital. In a week or two, it seemed that Eva’s health improved greatly. St Clare was happy and he was sure Eva would get better. But Miss Ophelia was not so sure, and neither was Eva herself. One afternoon, when St Care called Eva to give her a present, “Papa, I am going to leave you soon.” said Eva, and she started crying. “Oh, my dear!” said St Clare, “you’re just tired and a little weak because of the illness. You will be perfectly fine soon.” “No, Papa” said Eva,” I won’t get better. I am not sad. I’m sorry for you, Papa, and my friends, but I want to go!” “Why do you want to go? Are you unhappy, Eva?” “Oh, I feel sad for our slaves (奴隶): they are all good and kind to me. I wish, Papa they were all free.” “Don’t you think we treat them well?” said St Clare. “But what will happen to them if anything happens to you? There are very few men like you, Papa. Some people buy the husbands but not the wives, some people buy the mothers and sell the children. What terrible things people do! Papa, isn’t there any way to make all slaves free?” “Slavery is a very bad thing, but I don’t know what to do about it.” said St Clare. “Promise me that Uncle Tom will be free as soon as I’m asleep.” said Eva. …… ——Taken from Uncle Tom’s Cabin 32. Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day on average (平均). They don’t laugh very often when they are alone. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to connect (把……联系起来) with other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group. Some people even say that laughter is the best medicine. If a man is ill, laughter can help him get well. What do you think? 61.
