Most people celebrate their 80th birthday with cake and candles. Betty Kellenberger celebrated hers by making history. Kellenberger is from Michigan and recently became the oldest woman ever to finish the Appalachian Trail.
Kellenberger grew up on a farm in Howell and her interest in the famous trail began there. For years, she dreamed about hiking the trail but she never had six free months to do it. Having never married and with no children, she finally realized that nothing was holding her back—so in 2024, she took her first steps on what would become the adventure of a lifetime.
Along the way, Kellenberger faced many problems like dehydration (脱水), a head injury from a fall, and even a type of unusual illness. Her walk was also stopped by a storm, which hit the eastern United States and forced her to stop at the southern Virginia line. Determined to finish, she rerouted (改变线路) north and continued in the spring of 2025.
She finally reached the end of the trail. “You have so many emotions and don’t know what to do,” she laughed. “You’re excited about finishing. I was really looking forward to saying, ‘I am done.’ But you also know you’re going to miss this big time. You’re not going to have what you have out on that trail: that peace, the calmness. That was the greatest gift from my journey.”
She described Maine and New Hampshire as the most difficult parts—but also the most important. Now, after months of hiking through rain, heat, and other difficulties, Kellenberger says she’s in the best condition of her life.

Her walk was also stopped by a storm, which hit the eastern United States and forced her to stop at the southern Virginia line. That was the greatest gift from my journey.”

第三段“It was a scary moment, I was still in my office when I got the call…”
第二段“My first thought was to get my four sisters out of the house.”说Briar有四个妹妹,因此“one of my sisters”符合语境。
lay down“躺下”,cheered up“欢呼”,ran away“逃跑”都不符合当时惊讶查找的动作。
last“最后的”,next“下一个”,same“同样的”均不合理,first最恰当。

lost all the things失去所有物品,符合火灾后果。

be thankful for是固定搭配,表示“对……
