Would you like to know something that our ancestors knew? Here is a chance to take a trip back in time to the following places and discover it.
Great Orme Copper Mines, Wales
The discovery of the copper mines changed much of what we knew about our Bronze Age ancestors. It was believed that metalworking had come to England with the Romans, but this Welsh discovery proved that the British were already working metals 4,000 years ago. The mines are made up of five miles of passageways. Some are so small that historians think they were dug by children as young as five years old.
Jurassic Coast, Dorset
Spreading an impressive 95 miles between Exmouth and Dorset, the Jurassic coast is frequently described as a “walk through time”. It’s perfect for looking for fossils after a storm. Several beach towns along the way make for a much-needed short break. The clean water is perfect for swimming and the Clock Tower Café which is typical of the countryside has beautiful views and delicious cakes.
Cheddar Gorge, Somerset
There’s something other-worldly about this limestone gorge, where caves carved out by an underground river were once used by our ancient ancestors for maturing cheese and other foods. Visitors to the Gorge can also explore a cave where Britain's oldest human skeleton, the 9,000-year-old Cheddar Man, was first discovered back in 1903.
Compton Bay, Isle of Wight
Compton Bay hasn't always been a wonderful place. Some 130 million years ago it was occupied by dinosaurs both great and small. Take a walk along Compton Bay's sandy beach, and you may have a chance to find new fossil dinosaur footprints, preserved in rock.
1. Which of the following can the discovery of the copper mines show?
A. The Bronze Age ancestors were very strong.
B. Romans brought metalworking to England.
C. The work of metalworking was very interesting.
D. The British knew metalworking four thousand years ago.
2. What can we know about the Jurassic coast?
A. It's a good and safe place to see storms. B. Visitors can eat some delicious cakes.
C. It's only fit for people to walk on. D. Visitors must bring food when going there.
3. Where can the text be found?
A. In a shopping poster. B. In a novel. C. In a tourism magazine. D. In a science report.

37-year-old Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti uses physical comedy to bring cultural exchanges to the stage. Peking Opera has been a game changer for him, which led him to China and shaped enthusiasm for cultural exchanges.
Pilotti had a childhood love for a Chinese film. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics (杂技) and comedy into the fight scenes,” Pilotti says. Unlike kung fu, primarily a martial art, Peking Opera caught his opinion as a theatrical form designed for the stage with unique way of moving and fighting.
Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. During the third year in university, he got the first opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months.
Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards.
Traditional Chinese stories enlighten Pilotti. He has created two theatre pieces in recent years, including a story about the Monkey King, the omnipotent (全能的) character from the novel Journey to the West. In the Monkey King, Pilotti embodies the character’s tangibly characteristics through Peking Opera movements, inspiring his young audience members to be themselves. “The Monkey King is a famous character with many adaptations, so the kids already know a bit about him. But, when they can see the character closely in the show, it can be a surprise.”
“My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together.” Pilotti says.
4. What can we know about Peking Opera and Pilotti from the text?
A. Peking Opera is a martial art in Pilotti’s eyes.
B. Peking Opera completely changed Pilotti’s life.
C. Pilotti didn’t like Peking Opera at all as a child.
D. Pilotti grew up with a Peking Opera background.
5. What did Pilotti mean by saying “it was a no-brainer” in paragraph 3?
A. It was a tough decision because he lacked Chinese skills.
B. It was an obvious choice as he dreamed of going to China.
C. He made the decision without any prior knowledge of China.
D. It required extensive brainpower to understand Peking Opera.
6. What kind of person is Pilotti?
A. Original and dedicated B. Adaptable and rigorous
C. Passionate and considerate D. Committed and conventional
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Monkey King: A Huge Success B. A Swede Acts on Passion for Peking Opera
C. A Swede’s Journey into Chinese Martial Arts D. Pilotti’s Childhood Dream: From Finland to China
C
Can AI music ever feel truly human? A recent experiment with the AI music platform Suno offers some clues (线索). The study, which used thousands of Suno-generated songs, asked participants to tell AI music apart from human compositions. Results showed that people were only about 53% correct — almost like guessing. When the music styles were very similar, their correctness rose to 66%, but Suno’s models are advancing rapidly.
I tried Suno myself, using it to make a “1960s-style folk rock song with a male singer singing about protest”. The AI created it in seconds. Though I couldn’t easily tell it from human-made music, it didn’t touch me emotionally. This connects me to my personal experience with Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth”, a song tied to memories of my father teaching me to play it — memories that make the song meaningful.
Technology has long changed our relationship with music. From early file-sharing to modern streaming services, access has become effortless, as David Bowie, an iconic British rock musician active in the 1970s and 1980s, predicted years ago. Now, AI like Suno adds more music to the mix, with Spotify, a leading music streaming platform, recently removing 75 million “spammy (垃圾的)” tracks (though how many of them were AI-made isn’t known).
History shows new music technologies always cause debate. For example, sampling (采样) was once seen as lazy or theft but is now considered an art form. AI music faces similar copyright questions, but its connection to music feels less personal than a DJ sampling a beloved song.
While AI music quality improves, most of it, like most human music, may be forgotten. Listeners often seek (寻找) more than technical skill — they seek stories and human connections. Some exceptional AI songs might find use in films or internet memes, but deep emotional resonance (共鸣) still comes from human experiences.
We should remain cautious, though. Past inventions like player pianos reduced family music-making at home. David Bowie believed live performances would remain the key to real audience connection. For now, AI can mimic (模仿) the sound of human music, but the human touch — the memories, stories, and passion behind it — is what makes music truly meaningful.
8. What was a key finding of the recent study on AI music?
A. AI music still lacks the emotional depth found in human compositions.
B. The more similar the musical styles, the harder it was to tell them apart.
C. Participants were correct only about half of the time — no better than chance.
D. Listeners could hardly tell AI-generated music from human-composed music.
9. Why did the author mention his father?
A. To compare different music styles. B. To show his father’s musical talent.
C. To explain how to learn to play a song. D. To prove AI music lacks emotional depth.
10. Which of the following statements might the author mostly agree with?
A. Sampling is a more acceptable art form than AI music.
B. What makes music meaningful is the human experiences behind it.
C. AI music will soon replace human-made music in emotional depth.
D. Most AI music will eventually be forgotten, while most human music will not.
11. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain how AI music technology works.
B. To prove that AI music will be more widespread.
C. To discuss whether AI music can touch our hearts.
D. To advise that musicians should give live performances.

Everyone knows this: Slowly turn up the heat on a frog in a pot of water, and the frog won’t jump out. Unaware of the slight increase in heat, it will stay put until — well, until it dies. When it comes to the effect of rising global temperatures on amphibians (两栖动物), the frog-boiling fable is more than just a metaphor (隐喻).
Climate change is becoming one of the biggest threats to frogs and other amphibians, according to a major study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Between 2004 and 2022, rising temperatures became the primary reason why more than 100 amphibian species were slipping toward extinction.
The spread of disease among frogs and the destruction of their habitats have long been recognized as reasons why many amphibians are decreasing. But this new study establishes climate change as a major risk for amphibians around the world, too. The soft-skinned animals lack the fur and feathers to help adjust their temperature in this hotter and more drought-stricken world.
Less attention is paid to frogs and other amphibians compared to more well-known groups like birds. But losing amphibians species would be disastrous because they often act as a key link in the food web of ecosystems, wolfing insects down and, in turn, being eaten by larger predators. “Without those amphibians to fill that role, we will see the collapse of this food web,” said Neam, who works for an Austin-based environmental group.
Luckily, habitat protection and other conservation measures have been adopted to help recover more than five dozen amphibians from Costa Rica to Malaysia. “It’s not all bad news,” said Jennifer Luedtke, an amphibian group leader with the International Union for Conservation of Nature. “But we really must build on this improvement and significantly increase investment in amphibian conservation.”
12. How is the topic introduced?
A. By listing figures. B. By quoting a saying.
C. By sharing a story. D. By comparing perspectives.
13. What mainly causes the decrease of amphibians according to the new study?
A. The lack of feathers. B. The loss of habitats.
C. The spread of disease. D. The rise of temperature.
14. What does the underlined word “collapse” in paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Stability. B. Breakdown. C. Improvement. D. Disappearance.
15. How does Luedtke feel about the future of amphibians?
A. Pessimistic. B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D. Curious.
