I. Grammar and Vocabulary
Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Distant Diplomacy
When danger approaches, many creatures seem to follow the ancient proverb that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Recently, researchers 1 (find) subtle ways that animals communicate with other species in this kind of cooperative defense treaty.
For example, Nature Ecology & Evolution carries a recent study 2 (document) more than 20 bird species on four continents that send similar “whining (哀鸣)” calls when they spot brood parasites (寄生繁殖) such as cuckoos. “That call is essentially the word for ‘cuckoo,’” says study co-lead author James Kennerley at Cornell University. “And it’s recruiting individuals to come together 3 this common enemy.”
Brood parasites lay eggs in other birds’ nests, tricking the host birds into raising their chicks for them. At a field site in Australia, Kennerley has witnessed individuals from a dozen or more species 4 (attack) a cuckoo in response to whining calls in chorus. These mobs can be so aggressive that Kennerley needs to cage the specimen 5 (use) in their experiments to protect it. Otherwise the attacking birds would have “just completely torn it to pieces,” Kennerley says.
Many birds also share a common vocabulary for predators. Research by wildlife ecologist Erick Greene shows that various songbirds produce recognizable “seet” calls to warn each other of a flying raptor (猛禽). 6 such high sounds cannot be heard easily by those enemies, they can move safely while receiving danger messages. If the raptor settles, songbirds switch to “mobbing” calls, a distinct sound 7 draws in the troops to drive that raptor off.
Defense is not the only reason for cross-species communication. Among other things, it 8 help birds migrate and enhance food intake. A recent study found that when seabirds with good vision search for food with 9 with strong senses of smell, they both have far greater success at catching krill (磷虾). Unlike with the seep and whining calls, however, it’s unclear 10 they’re signaling to one another on purpose or just randomly following other birds.

The Myth of Sustainable Fashion
Few industries boast about their sustainability achievements more 11 than the fashion industry. Products ranging from swimsuits to wedding dresses are marketed as carbon positive, organic, or vegan while yoga mats made from mushrooms and sneakers from sugar cane (甘蔗) 12 retail shelves. New business models including recycling, resale, rental, reuse, and repair are sold as environmental life savers. The sad truth, however, is that all this experimentation and supposed“innovation” in the fashion industry over the past 25 years have failed to lessen its planetary impact.
To fully understand just how 13 the market has failed the planet in the fashion industry, let’s look more closely at why sustainable fashion is anything but sustainable.
The precise negative environmental impact of the fashion industry remains unknown, but it is sizeable. The industry’s boundaries spread globally and its multi-tiered (多层的) supply chain remains complex. Thanks to trade liberalization, globalization, and 14 cost pressures, very few brands own the assets (资产) of their upstream factories, and most companies outsource final production.
It’s not as if “sustainability” isn’t on the 15 for fashion companies. But several common steps that companies are taking are not having their desired effect:
Recycling: Recycling is 16 . This is due to a host of reasons including the inability to plan design at scale due to the variability of supply; limits to recycling technology; limited infrastructure; and shorter, lower-quality fibers resulting from recycled inputs and high cost. As a result of these obstacles, less than 1% of all clothing is truly recycled into new clothing.
Bio-Based Materials: Another response to address the growing environmental footprint of fashion is the “next-gen materials industry.” Innovators are now cultivating and growing bio-based 17 for conventional livestock obtained materials (e. g. , leather) and fossil fuel-based synthetics Some of these new bio-based textiles can be engineered to deliver performance features alongside 18 such as biodegradability
Unfortunately, these innovations are burdened by high initial costs (relative to well-established alternatives that benefit from scale economies), large requirements for 19 (to fund new production sites), and resistance to change.
Fashion is often said to both reflect and lead culture — the industry has a once-in-history opportunity to demonstrate that creativity and respect for boundaries can lead to 20 sustainability.
II. Reading Comprehension (21 – 35
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
In recent years, the widespread 21 of mobile phones has extended to even the youngest members of society. Research conducted by Ofcom (英国通信管理局) has found that a surprising number of three-and four-year-olds have their own mobile phones, with a fifth of them owning one. These young children are already using these devices to 22 various online activities.
The influence of YouTube among this age group is undeniable, with 51% of them using the platform’s 23 children’s channel, and 38% of them possessing their own 24 YouTube profile. One of the most popular YouTube channels for these young children is Ryan’s World, a highly successful unboxing and educational channel hosted by 11-year-old Ryan Kaji, boasting an impressive 34 million 25 .
The implications of such early 26 to technology are a subject of great interest to educators and child psychologists. Nova Cobban, a former primary school teacher who worked with five- and six-year-olds, noticed a clear 27 among her young students based on their access to smartphones. Children who had access to YouTube and gaming platforms seemed more 28 and tired compared to their peers who did not engage with such technology.
Dr. Pauldy Otermans, a senior lecturer in psychology at Brunel University London, believes that in the digital age, it is essential to teach children how to use digital tools 29 . As mobile phones become increasingly prevalent in society, it may be 30 to expect children just a few years older than toddlers to have little to no contact with such devices. Proper guidance on their appropriate use becomes crucial.
The debate on the appropriate 31 for children to have mobile phones and access to screens is ongoing. In 2019, the World Health Organization recommended that children under the age of two should avoid screens entirely, and children under five should be limited to just one hour of sedentary screen time daily. Research has linked 32 screen time in young children to delayed development.
Despite these guidelines, there is no shared agreement among experts on how to respond to the growing prevalence of mobile phones among young children. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health 33 the WHO’s advice, arguing that it overlooks families in situations where outdoor play is not 34 accessible due to housing constraints. 35 , the UK government’s chief medical officers stopped issuing specific guidance on optimal screen time for young children.

A
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds. But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills tucked in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year and consumed my weight in mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.
Before my children were born I had already decided that I would teach them Mandarin (普通话). I felt that they ought to be able to speak the language of their grandparents, the first language their mother encountered.
Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”. However, as this exercise continued, the gaps in my Mandarin became more and more obvious. One morning, when my daughter asked “What is the word for ‘arm’?” I panicked. Had I already reached the boundaries of my knowledge?
Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — is a much-needed boon to parents like me: second-generation immigrants who want to pass the language on to their children.
The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked Chinese section in the children’s wing. The tale of the Monkey King and the legend of Chang’e immediately caught my daughter’s imagination.
When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.
My youngest child recited Li Bai’s “Quiet Night Thoughts” for the Moon Festival performance at his preschool last fall. For generations of Chinese children, it’s the first piece of literature they memorize. It’s performed for all occasions, but most often for the Moon Festival. Its four lines describe how the glow of the full moon reminds the poet of his distant home.
Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the steadfast (坚定不移的) moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history and memory, and connects future generations to past ones.
Before my bed the bright moon’s glow
Seems like frost on the ground
Raising my head, I gaze at the moon
Lowering my head, I think of home
My son’s voice rang out with confidence and his arms swept up to indicate the moon above. Joy and wonder lit up my father’s face as he listened to the familiar verses from the mouth of his grandson: verses that had been spoken by my father and my grandparents when they were students in China, and by countless boys and girls before that.

Thai Gallery
A taste of Thailand ★★★★★
If you love Thai food, you must check out this place. The food was beyond amazing, and the staff were incredibly kind and attentive. Unfortunately, we were just visiting the area for the weekend, but if we lived nearby, we’d go back in a heartbeat. As a starter, we had veggie summer rolls, which were out of this world and it was so fresh and bursting with flavour. I had the spicy stir-fried pork and, although it was a bit spicier than I usually like it, it was divine. If I could give this place 6 stars, I would! Highly recommended.
Efes Cuisine
Wow! A little gem! ★★★★★
My girlfriend and I went to this restaurant at the weekend, to celebrate our anniversary, and we had a wonderfully memorable experience. Located in the old town, their Middle Eastern-inspired menu is impressive, and every dish we tried was excellent. The dips were delicious – try all of them! The friendly staff were very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients and were able to suggest great wines to go with different dishes. The venue was relaxed and charming with cosy lighting, which made it all feel quite romantic. It wasn’t just couples, though – there were groups of friends as well. It’s very popular, so book in advance. All in all, a fantastic experience, and we’ll go back again soon.
Daisy’s Steakhouse
A big let down! ★★★★★
I’d read some good reviews of this restaurant online and was excited about the thought of a great steak but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. We got there at 8.15pm, and despite having booked a table, we had to wait for more than 20 minutes, and they didn’t even offer us a drink at the bar. Then, once we sat down, we were told we’d have to leave the table by 9.30pm. I was not impressed to say the least. Once we’d ordered, the food arrived fairly quickly, but the steak was extremely tough (almost inedible, to be honest), and the sauce was depressingly bland. We won’t be going back, which is a shame because it’s stylishly decorated and our waitress was friendly. The wine selection was good, too, if a little pricey.
Vegan Heaven
Yes yes yes! Vegan heaven! ★★★★★
I’ve been looking for more vegan-friendly restaurants since I switched to a plant-based diet, so when a friend told me about this vegetarian café, I was keen to try it out. Though not everything on the menu is vegan, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of dishes I could choose from. I had the baked artichokes followed by the sweet potato coconut curry. Yum! The service was incredible, too. The staff dealt brilliantly with my son’s gluten intolerance. If I had to criticize one thing, it would be that the tables were too close together, so we felt a bit cramped. Even so, this will become one of our go-to eateries.
Sky Club
Mediocre ★★★★★
Had chicken fajitas, which were tasty but quite cold. The cocktails were delicious, though. I’d especially recommend the strawberry mojito. Authentic decor and nice atmosphere, but the service was soooooo slow. We didn’t leave a tip. Can’t complain about the price. Overall, it was OK, but I wouldn’t rush back.

41.What does the word “hype” in line 3 mean in the review of “Daisy’s Steakhouse”?
A.Delicacy. B.Praise. C.Reality. D.Tension.
42.According to the passage, it can be learned that ______.
A.Efes Cuisine is a perfect place reserved for couples only
B.Efes Cuisine offers a wide range of tasty Southern Asian cuisines
C.Efes Cuisine is so popular that it’s better for diners to make a reservation
D.The decoration and service of Efes Cuisine are incredible despite its high price

Science advances fastest when data and conclusions are shared as quickly as possible. Yet it is common practice for medical researchers to conceal results for months or years until research is published in an academic journal. Even then, the data supporting a study are often not revealed.
The motive to withhold findings is powerful. Journal papers are the key measure of a scientist’s productivity. To win research money and get promoted, scientists need to increase an impressive list of publications. Yet the delays in spreading knowledge have the capacity to do real harm. Nor are elite journals the guardians of quality that they often claim to be. The number of papers so flawed that they need to be retracted has risen sharply in the past two decades. Studies in elite journals (such as Nature and Science) are no statistically stronger than those in lesser journals.
Science should not, and need not, be restrained by journal publication. Three sensible reforms would ensure that researchers’ results could be communicated to more people more quickly, without any decline in quality. Step one is for the organizations that finance research to demand that scientists put their academic papers, along with their experimental data, in publicly accessible “databases” before they are sent to a journal. That would allow other researchers to make use of the findings without delay. Those opposing such “preprints” argue that they allow work of poor quality to grow wildly because it has not yet been peer-reviewed. That may surprise physicists and mathematicians, who have been posting work to arXiv, a preprint database, for more than 25 years with no ill effects.
Step two is to improve the process of peer review itself. Journals currently administer a system of organizing anonymous peer reviewers to pass judgment on new research — a fact they use, in part, to justify their sky — high subscription prices. But this process tends to be abused. At its worst, groups of researchers are suspected of guaranteeing favorable reviews for each other’s work. Better that reviewers are named and that the reviews are published. The Gates foundation has announced its support for an online database where such open peer review of papers takes place. The database was launched last year by the Welcome Trust, meaning that the world’s two largest medical charities have thrown their weight behind it. Others should follow.
Finally, science needs to stop relying so much on journal publication as the only recognized qualification for researchers and the only path to career progression. Tools exist that report how often a preprint has been viewed, for example, or whether a clinical data set has been cited in guidelines for doctors. A handful of firms are using artificial intelligence to assess the scientific importance of research, disregarding how it has been spread. Such approaches need encouragement. Journals may lose out, but science itself will benefit.
43.The passage primarily argues ________.
A.why scientists should timely make public their information with other peers
B.how a reliable system that promotes fast sharing of academic outcomes can be established
C.how the scientific circle ensures the quality of those research papers published in journals
D.what the difference is between the studies posted to preprint databases and the elite journals
44.Which of the following is NOT the reason why scientists hold back their findings?
A.They want to climb up the career ladders.
B.They want to show their capacity of yielding great researches.
C.They want to ensure the scientific validity before releasing them.
D.They want to get funded for their study.
45.What can help reduce academics’ dependence on journal publication?
A.Using tools to report the frequency of a preprint being viewed.
B.Firms using advanced technology to produce research.
C.Citing doctors’ guideline in processing a clinical data.
D.Finding methods to assess the way those studies are shared or spread.
46.Which one of the following statements will the author most probably agree with?
A.Full trust can be put in elite journals like Science and Nature.
B.The prospect of scientific journals undoubtedly outweighs that of science.
C.The popularity of preprint will inevitably bring about a careless academic world.
D.Organizations ought to employ an open measure to conduct the peer review.

Friendship Between Marx and Engels
The friendship between Marx and Engels began in 1844. They had met previously, in 1842, in the office of the Rheinische Zeitung (《莱茵报》) , then the leading Democratic Republican journal in Germany, of which Marx was the editor. 47
Engels, the son of a leading cotton manufacturer and importer in Rhenish Prussia, had just finished his year in the army as lieutenant (陆军中尉) of the Guard-Artillery (炮兵警卫队). His upbringing in a Lutheran and commercial home atmosphere had been very different from that of Marx, who had been raised in an atmosphere of eighteenth-century French culture.
In 1844, Marx made his way to Paris, and collaborated with a friend in producing a new review-magazine, The German French Year Book. When he read the article, “Outlines of Political Economy,” from young Frederick Engels away in Manchester, Marx proclaimed it a work of genius and wrote at once, enthusiastically, begging Engels, whenever he had occasion to return to Germany, to make his way there via Paris.
Engels was only too delighted to comply. 48 For ten days they compared views and found that each had independently reached the same revolutionary conclusion: that the bourgeois (资产阶级) social order was, historically, a transitory phenomenon — an order doomed to give place, sooner or later, to the rule of the proletariat and a system of Communism. The fact that each had reached this conclusion by a different route — Engels by the study of the classic English political economy and of the English Labour Movement, Marx by the study of the great French Revolution and its outcome — made them only the more complementary to each other. The friendship sealed in these ten enthusiastic days — “ten days that shook the world” in a very real sense — lasted unbroken for the remainder of their lives.
They fought side by side in the conduct of the Neue Rheinische Zeitung (《新莱茵报》), the most radical journal of the German Revolution of 1848 — 1849, and were separated only for a time.
When Marx, driven from France, took refuge in London, Engels joined him and busied himself in finding openings for Marx to make a living by journalism; while he himself, to provide the “sinews of war,” made his peace with his father and resumed his place in the parental factory in Manchester.
49
How close their relationship was and how very much Engels’s stimulus and encouragement counted in promoting the development of Marx and his life-work can best be seen from the Marx-Engels Correspondence. They each wrote almost daily, and on every aspect of the theory for which they were jointly responsible. The range of subjects covered by them is as amazing as their range of languages.
50 Both were big men physically, but whereas Marx was broad and swarthy (肤色黝黑), Engels was tall and blonde. Marx was the more of a wit, Engels the more of a humorist; but both were men of intense feeling, both had a hatred of fuss (小题大做) and parade, and both were men of a radical profundity in the study of every subject they undertook.
A.Marx and Engels began their friendship shortly afterwards.
B.This time, both found that their original negative impression of each other was completely changed.
C.Engels made his peace with his father because he wanted to support their cause.
D.Thereafter for the rest of their lives they never lost contact.
E.Neither was, at this first meeting, much drawn to the other.
F.Physically and temperamentally they were very different, and at the same time much alike.
III. Summary Writing (10分)
51.Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Drawbacks—and Benefits—of Isolation
Loneliness is increasingly seen as a serious problem in modern society, affecting both the elderly and many young people. Smartphones, social media, and remote work are often blamed for making individuals feel isolated. Three recent books explore the complex nature of being alone.
“All the Lonely People” shares personal stories from individuals experiencing deep isolation. The author, Sam Carr, a psychologist, sensitively shows the emotional pain caused by loss of family members, disease, or difficult childhood experiences. After reading this book, one may wonder whether loneliness is just an unavoidable human experience. Actually, Carr suggests loneliness isn’t one simple feeling, but a mix of different unhappy emotions and unsatisfied needs.
Another book, “Solitude”, written by two psychologists, shows a completely different story, exploring the rewards of time spent alone. It is common to treat loneliness and being alone as similar concepts, but they are not. Based on laboratory work, interviews and surveys, the authors argue that isolation offers valuable benefits, which depends on whether being alone is voluntary. Being alone allows people space to rest, think, and escape constant noise and distractions. However, the experience depends entirely on whether being alone is voluntary. Being forced to stay isolated, like prisoners, is usually miserable.
“The Success of the Sleepers” presents a more critical view of modern isolation. Mr Bruckner, a philosopher, calls the present period “a Great Withdrawal.” The book describes a society where most tasks can be completed without leaving house. The author’s comment? “While it’s nice to be comfortable, you can’t build a civilization on comfort.” Mr Bruckner’s main theme is the need for people to reclaim the art of affiliation. The author believes “interactive isolation” enabled by technology cannot replace “the great theatre of the world.” Mr Bruckner supplies a checklist for getting rid of enduring, painful feelings of loneliness: “Have we loved others enough, given others enough, held others enough?”
Maybe it is time to try to answer these questions.

其结构为“have/has been doing”,主语“researchers”是复数,助动词用have。
“witness sb. do sth.”
此句为宾语从句,作“unclear”的宾语,从句中不缺少成分,且根据“or just randomly following other birds”可知,这里表示“是否”的意思,所以用“whether”引导。

空格修饰动词boast(吹嘘),需要副词。
空格后有介词for,结合conventional livestock obtained materials (e. g. , leather) and fossil fuel-based synthetics(合成材料)可知,此处为名词substitutes“替代品”,指创新者正在培育替代传统和基于化石燃料的材料。

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
A
Growing up in America as a child of first-generation Chinese immigrants, I was used to living in two worlds.

根据原文第一段“But as I grew older, the Chinese side faded away, inch by inch. While I happily accepted the bills tucked in red envelopes that adults gave to children for Lunar New Year and consumed my weight in mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, I didn’t feel connected to the culture.(但随着年龄增长,我身上的中国情结一点点褪去。虽然我开心收下春节长辈给的红包,中秋也吃很多月饼,却没有和这种文化产生归属感。)”可知,作者曾经失去了对中国文化的归属感。
37.细节理解题。根据原文第三段“Parenting books advised narrating your actions while with your baby, so I started digging out long-buried words: “ball”, “eat”, “sleep”, “play”.(育儿书籍建议陪孩子时把自己的行为用语言说出来,于是我开始翻出尘封已久的中文词汇:球、吃、睡觉、玩耍。)”、第四段“Luckily, these days the ready availability of Chinese language media — from books to television shows to music — is a much-needed boon to parents like me (幸运的是,如今随处可得的中文媒介 —— 书籍、电视节目、音乐等,对像我这样想把语言传给孩子的移民父母来说十分有益。)”以及第五段“The first time I stepped into the local library in my Bay Area hometown, I was amazed to find a well-stocked Chinese section in the children’s wing.(我第一次走进湾区家乡的当地图书馆,惊讶地发现儿童区有藏书丰富的中文专区。)”
根据原文第六段“When I see my son converse with his grandfather in Mandarin or when my daughter insists on fish for Lunar New Year, the time spent reading all those books closely feels well-spent.(当看到儿子用普通话和爷爷交流、女儿坚持过年要吃鱼时,我觉得花在陪孩子读中文书上的所有时间都十分值得。)”
根据原文第八段“Decades ago, my Chinese teacher explained to me how the steadfast moon connects all those who seek its light, no matter how far apart they are. So, too, does language. It influences culture and history and memory, and connects future generations to past ones.(几十年前,语文老师说明月能把所有仰望月光的人连在一起,无论相隔多远。语言亦是如此,它承载文化、历史与记忆,把后世与前人紧紧相连。)”并结合作者教自己的孩子学习普通话的经历,并从孩子能用中文交流、背诵古诗中感受到语言跨越时空、联结世代与文化的力量可知,文章主旨是语言与文化能够跨越时空、联结人们。
B
40.Larry doesn’t eat meat. After reading these online restaurant reviews, as Larry’s best friend, which one will you recommend?
A.Efes Cuisine. B.Sky Club. C.Thai Gallery. D.Vegan Heaven.
根据Vegan Heaven部分“I’ve been looking for more vegan-friendly restaurants since I switched to a plant-based diet (自从我转向植物性饮食以来,我一直在寻找更多对素食主义者友好的餐厅)”及“Though not everything on the menu is vegan, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of dishes I could choose from. (虽然菜单上并非所有菜品都是纯素的,但可供我选择的菜品数量还是给了我一个惊喜)”可知,这家餐厅提供大量素食选择,适合不吃肉的Larry。故选D。
41.词句猜测题。根据 Daisy’s Steakhouse部分“I’d read some good reviews of this restaurant online and was excited about the thought of a great steak but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the hype. (我在网上看到过这家餐厅的一些好评,一想到能吃到美味的牛排就很兴奋,但遗憾的是,它并没有达到hype)”可知,作者之前看到了好评,对这家店抱有期待,但实际体验很失望,说明它没有宣传的那么好。“Praise (赞扬)”的意思最接近。故选B。

根据第三段“Science should not, and need not, be restrained by journal publication. Three sensible reforms would ensure that researchers’ results could be communicated to more people more quickly, without any decline in quality.(科学不应也不必受到期刊发表的限制。实施三项合理的改革措施,能够确保研究人员的研究成果能够以更快的速度传递给更多的人,并且不会影响其质量)”结合文章指出医学科研成果公布滞后、期刊质量被高估,提出三项改革:建立预印本数据库、开放同行评审、减少对期刊发表的依赖,以加快学术共享、推动科学发展。可知,文章主要论述了如何建立一个能够促进学术成果快速共享的可靠系统。故选B。
44.细节理解题。根据第二段“The motive to withhold findings is powerful. Journal papers are the key measure of a scientist’s productivity. To win research money and get promoted, scientists need to increase an impressive list of publications.(隐瞒研究结果的动机很强。期刊论文是衡量科学家产出的关键标准。为了获得研究资金和晋升,科学家需要增加令人印象深刻的发表清单)”可知,C选项“他们希望在公布之前先确保其科学性”并非是科学家们对研究成果有所保留的原因。故选C。
45.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Finally, science needs to stop relying so much on journal publication as the only recognized qualification for researchers and the only path to career progression. Tools exist that report how often a preprint has been viewed, for example, or whether a clinical data set has been cited in guidelines for doctors. (最后,科学界需要停止过度依赖期刊发表作为衡量研究人员能力的唯一标准以及衡量职业发展路径的唯一方式。确实存在一些工具可以报告一份预印本被浏览的次数,或者某个临床数据集是否已被纳入医生的诊疗指南之中)”可知,利用工具来记录预印本的浏览次数能够帮助减少学者对期刊发表的依赖。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Better that reviewers are named and that the reviews are published. The Gates foundation has announced its support for an online database where such open peer review of papers takes place.(最好还是公布评审人员的姓名,并将评审结果公布于众。盖茨基金会已宣布支持建立一个在线数据库,用于此类公开的同行论文评审工作)”可知,作者认为组织应当采用开放的方式来进行同行评审。故选D。

They had met previously, in 1842, in the office of the Rheinische Zeitung (《莱茵报》) , then the leading Democratic Republican journal in Germany, of which Marx was the editor.(马克思和恩格斯的友谊始于1844年。他们此前曾于1842年在《莱茵报》的办公室见过面,该报当时是德国主要的民主共和派期刊,马克思担任其主编)”以及下文“His upbringing in a Lutheran and commercial home atmosphere had been very different from that of Marx, who had been raised in an atmosphere of eighteenth-century French culture.(他(恩格斯)在路德教和商业家庭环境中长大,这与马克思在18世纪法国文化环境中长大的情况大不相同)”可知,上文提及两人1842年的初次会面,下文强调成长环境差异,此处需衔接初次会面的感受。 中的this first meeting对应上文1842年的会面,neither was much drawn to the other呼应下文成长环境差异带来的初始隔阂,符合语境。故选E项。
48.根据上文“Engels was only too delighted to comply.(恩格斯欣然应允)”以及下文“For ten days they compared views and found that each had independently reached the same revolutionary conclusion: that the bourgeois (资产阶级) social order was, historically, a transitory phenomenon — an order doomed to give place, sooner or later, to the rule of the proletariat and a system of Communism.
49.根据上文“When Marx, driven from France, took refuge in London, Engels joined him and busied himself in finding openings for Marx to make a living by journalism; while he himself, to provide the “sinews of war,” made his peace with his father and resumed his place in the parental factory in Manchester.(当马克思被迫离开法国前往伦敦避难时,恩格斯前去投奔,并忙着为马克思寻找以新闻写作谋生的机会;而他自己为了提供“活动经费”,与父亲和解,回到了曼彻斯特的家族工厂任职)”以及下文“How close their relationship was and how very much Engels’s stimulus and encouragement counted in promoting the development of Marx and his life-work can best be seen from the Marx-Engels Correspondence. They each wrote almost daily, and on every aspect of the theory for which they were jointly responsible.
50.根据下文“Both were big men physically, but whereas Marx was broad and swarthy, Engels was tall and blonde. Marx was the more of a wit, Engels the more of a humorist; but both were men of intense feeling, both had a hatred of fuss (小题大做) and parade, and both were men of a radical profundity in the study of every subject they undertook.(两人身材都高大,但马克思身材魁梧、肤色黝黑,恩格斯则高挑金发。马克思更善于言辞风趣,恩格斯则更具幽默感;但两人都情感真挚,两人都讨厌小题大做和炫耀,在他们所从事的每一门学科的研究中,两人都是极其深刻的人。)”可知,下文从外貌和性格两方面对比了两人的异同,此处需作为该段主旨句总领全段。F选项“他们在外形和性格上既有很大差异,同时又有诸多相似之处)”中的Physically and temperamentally对应下文的外貌描写和性格对比,符合语境。故选F项。

The video captures a memorable moment from our school’s annual sports meet. In the clip, our class, which wasn’t known for being athletic, is taking part in the relay race. When it was my turn to receive the baton and run, I stumbled badly and almost fell over. However, I quickly regained my balance and sprinted forward as fast as I could. What really stands out in this scene is that my classmates, who were watching eagerly, didn’t blame me for the near-fall. Instead, they cheered even louder, shouting words of encouragement like “Come on, you can do it!”
The reason I find this moment the most meaningful is that it truly demonstrates what team spirit is all about. What we learn from this experience is that teamwork isn’t just about winning races or achieving first place; it’s about supporting each other through thick and thin, no matter what happens.
