Have you ever seen the silver line inside a mercury thermometer (水银温度计) that many families used years ago? It was a common tool at home. However, the mercury thermometer has become a thing of the past. Because a full ban (禁令) on the production of mercury thermometers has been in effect this year since January 1.
Why is mercury dangerous?
The main reason for this ban is safety. Mercury is a kind of highly toxic (有毒的) metal. It is the only metal that is liquid (液体) at room temperature. If a thermometer breaks, the mercury inside forms small, silver drops on the ground. These beads evaporate (蒸发) quickly into the air, which is very dangerous to breathe in. Even small amounts can be harmful, especially to children.
Risks of using mercury thermometers
These thermometers need to be shaken hard before use to put the mercury back down. If you shake them too hard, hit them against an object, or accidentally drop them, the glass can break easily. The mercury will leak out, which is a health risk.
Safer and better alternatives (替代物)
Now, there are many safe and good alternatives. Doctors say the most common choices now are digital thermometers and infrared (红外线的) thermometers. These include non-contact body thermometers and contact ear thermometers.
One big advantage of electronic thermometers is their speed. A mercury thermometer needs about 10 minutes to get a temperature reading, while an electronic one gives results in seconds. It is much more convenient. So, giving up using mercury thermometers is a certain trend (趋势). It is a good change for our health and the environment.
14. When did people stop producing mercury thermometers?
A. January 1, 2025 B. February 1, 2026 C. January 1, 2026 D. February 1 2025
15. What does the underlined phrase “leak out” most probably mean?
A. flow out B. put out C. take out D. turn out
16. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Mercury is harmless to little children.
B. Electronic thermometers are much safer.
C. Shaking a mercury thermometer hard makes it safer to use.
D. Electronic thermometers need about ten minutes to get a result
17. What is the passage mainly about?
A. How to use mercury thermometers correctly.
B. Why mercury thermometers are replaced.
C. The history of mercury thermometers.
D. The development of China’s laws on thermometers.

Finding a snail? Catching it? Easy — they hardly move!
To tell the truth, I wasn’t raised to be a fan of snails. Having a grandmother as a gardener, my brother and I were taught from a young age that if we see a snail on a plant, we should pick it away. But as I’ve grown older, my view on snails has changed. They bring me a different kind of happiness.
The first time I saw snails as more than just pests was in my garden. A small snail, carrying a hard round shell on its back, moved slowly toward a half-open flower bud and explored it. After a while, the bud bloomed. Watching the snail carefully touching the flower with its tentacles (触角) reminded me of the lyric “Snails see the beauty in every inch.” At that moment, I realized it takes life slowly but seriously.
Another time, I noticed a little snail moving by. I quickly picked up the snail and placed it in my hand. Accidentally, a few drops of water dripped onto the snail. It was scared by the sudden wetness and quickly housed back into its shell. I thought it would hide inside for at least a couple of minutes, but shortly after that, the snail poked its head out again. It was not just hiding but adjusting.
It’s not just the snail’s movements that make it a symbol of peace, but also its sense of knowing when to re-enter the exciting life. Once, having difficulty with my career, I was walking outside the office on a hot summer day. On my way back, it started to rain. When the raindrops wet the soil, some little friends appeared everywhere. After waiting patiently for the rain, they energetically get up and go. It was also the right moment for me to start over.
So, what is the secret to living like snails? It’s not about being sluggish. It’s about being snailish.

A. They were interesting treasures in the garden.
B. They were harmful to plants and should be killed.

19. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Snails move slowly and like beautiful things.
B. Snails can see small things clearly.
C. Snails take their time to discover beauty around them.
D. Snails spend all their time looking for beauty.
20. Which is true about snails?
A. Snails prefer hot summer days.
B. Snails are afraid of water and will hide for a long time.
C. Snails live a slow and boring life every day.
D. Snails are able to get used to new situations.
21. How can we live a “snailish” life?
A. We must stay away from danger in our life.
B. We can do almost everything as slowly as snails do.
C. We should stay calm and know when to move forward.
D. We had better wait for others' help when in trouble.

“It’s in the garden no one can go into,” she said to herself. “It’s the garden without a door. He lives there. How I wish I could see what it is like!”
She looked closely at the wall but found no door.
That night, Mary asked Martha, “Why does Mr. Craven hate the garden?”
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden. She loved it. But one day she fell off a tree and died. Mr. Craven was so sad that he locked the door and buried the key. No one has gone in since then,” Martha said quietly.
Mary felt sorry for him. As she sat by the fire, she heard the wind outside, then something else.

But for the next hundred years, people still didn’t know why some pea plants were tall 45 some were short.
Then, 46 (amaze) news came! A group of international scientists worked together and found more. This team 47 (lead) by two great scientists, Cheng Shifeng from China and Noel Ellis from the UK. To me, “Qiji galloping, unstoppable” means never giving up, keeping going, and staying calm when facing challenges.
Last term, I struggled with my English listening and almost wanted to give up. But with the spirit of Qiji, I practiced listening for 30 minutes every day, kept taking notes of new words, and asked my teacher for help when I had problems. Slowly, my listening skills improved a lot, and I even got an A in the final exam.
This power makes me feel confident and brave. It tells me that as long as I keep moving forward step by step, nothing can stop me. I will keep this spirit and gallop towards my dreams bravely.
