One day, she overheard a colleague (同事) talking about a reading program. She went home that night and did some research. She was shocked to learn that many Boston kids had trouble reading. So, she decided to volunteer as a reading tutor. Priya found a nonprofit (非营利机构) that matched volunteers with students. After eight hours of training, Priya was paired with Deshawn, a lively 7-year-old boy. Their first meeting didn’t go well. Deshawn refused to sit down or look at the books. He was more curious about Priya’s accent (口音). Remembering her training, Priya asked about his interests. Deshawn loved dinosaurs and trucks, so Priya found a picture book about a T. rex driving a dump truck. She read it to him. By the third reading, Deshawn began recognizing words like “the”, “big” and “go”. Over the weeks, Priya and Deshawn developed a routine (惯例). They started with a familiar book, then tried something new, and ended with Deshawn’s choice. Progress was slow. But one cold December day, Deshawn surprised Priya by reading a simple book about a boy and his dog. “I read that,” he said and grinned. His confidence grew, and he asked to read another book. Priya continued volunteering, now in her second year. Deshawn, now in 2nd grade, is nearing grade-level reading. Priya believes that volunteering changed her as much as it did Deshawn. “You just need to show up and care,” she says. “It will be the best hour of your week.” 9. Such a disaster may greatly influence a nation for a long time. Scientists have been trying to prepare the world for future natural disasters. One of them is Dr. Lucy Jones. She has spent years studying the Earth’s heartbeat. In a recent interview, the American scientist talked about her work. Q: I still remember the Indian Ocean Tsunami (海啸) in 2004. It was so terrible! How do you think the disaster has influenced the world? A: I consider this tsunami our first truly global disaster. It changed the global discussion about disasters. Citizens from 50 different countries died in that event. (Many of them were on holiday.) The tsunami touched everybody. The emotional stories connected us to the disaster. People realized that one of the main reasons why there were so many deaths was that there wasn’t a warning system. Now, people believe it is worthwhile (值得的) to develop new technologies to prevent (阻止) future losses (损失). Q: Do we now have the ability to predict (预测) natural disasters? A: It depends on the type of disaster. Earthquakes are completely unpredictable. However, by studying activities under the ground, we may be able to work out some patterns and build better warning systems. Q: So the world is now better prepared for disasters, isn’t it? A: We’re probably better than we were, but we are not as good as we should be. To prevent serious losses in an earthquake, for example, we need better buildings. We have the technologies to build such buildings, but we have to tell people that it’s worth spending more money and using these technologies. 13. What has Dr. Lucy Jones studied for years? A. Natural environment. B. Buildings in disasters. C. The Earth’s heartbeat. D. The Indian Ocean Tsunami. 14. According to the text, why did many people die in the 2004 Tsunami? A. Because there was no warning system. B. Because no one knew about earthquakes. C. Because people lived too close to the sea. D. Because few countries worked together. 15. What does Dr. Lucy Jones mean by her words in the last paragraph? A. We should better protect old buildings. B. We still need to improve disaster preparation. C. We need more money and new technologies. D. We should learn more about earthquake safety. 16. What is the topic (话题) of the interview? A. When disasters hit B. How to stop earthquakes C. When there’s an earthquake D. How to prepare for a tsunami 【答案】13. C 14. A 15. B 16. 【13题详解】 根据第一段最后一句“She has spent years studying the Earth's heartbeat.” 【14题详解】 根据第三段,对第一个问题的回答“People realized that one of the main reasons why there were so many deaths was that there wasn't a warning system.” 【15题详解】 根据文章最后一段Lucy Jones的回答“We’re probably better than we were, but we are not as good as we should be.” From Hotels to Tents Since early this year, many cities have seen a trend (时尚): Hotels are getting fewer guests while camping sites are becoming popular. One day in the 1940s, he was walking his dog in a forest. Lots of burrs stuck to his trousers and he found it hard to get them off. What made the burrs stick on well? When George got home, he looked at them under his microscope. He found that each burr had many tiny hooks (钩子).These hooks could hold onto anything with a loop (环), such as clothing fibre, animal fur, or even human hair. “Nature is a great engineer!” he thought. “Maybe I can make a new fastener with tiny hooks and loops.” George decided to weave (编织) tiny hooks on one piece of cloth and tiny loops on the other. By pressing the two pieces together, they would stick to each other. However, it was very hard to make these tiny hooks. They had to be strong enough to stick to the loops. They also needed to be flexible (灵活的), so that the user could pull on them to get them off the loops. George used nylon fibres (尼龙纤维) to make the hooks. After years of hard work, he was able to weave hundreds of tiny hooks and loops onto small pieces of cloth. He set up the Velcro Company in 1952 for making these fasteners. In the late 1950s, a machine was created to produce them. In the 1960s, NASA astronauts started to use these fasteners to fix some devices (设备) on their spaceships. The fasteners soon became popular and people began calling them Velcro. Today, you can find Velcro on your school bag, shoes, and pretty much everywhere else! 41. What did George find while walking his dog in the forest? __________________________________________________ 42. What idea did George get from his finding? __________________________________________________ 43. When was George’s invention used by NASA astronauts? __________________________________________________ 44. What can you learn from George as an inventor? Write 30 words or more. __________________________________________________ 【答案】41. He found lots of burrs stuck to his trousers and hard to get them off. 42. He wanted to make a new fastener with tiny hooks and loops. 43. In the 1960s. 44. George’s story teaches me that new inventions sometimes come from problems in our daily life. These problems help us think more and bring us new ideas. If we keep studying hard, we can create new useful inventions. 【41题详解】 根据第一段中“Lots of burrs stuck to his trousers and he found it hard to get them off.(许多毛刺粘在他的裤子上,他发现很难把它们弄下来。)” 【42题详解】 根据第二段中“Maybe I can make a new fastener with tiny hooks and loops.(也许我可以做一个带有小钩子和小环的新型扣件。)” 【43题详解】 根据第五段中“In the 1960s, NASA astronauts started to use these fasteners to fix some devices on their spaceships.(在20世纪60年代,美国宇航局的宇航员开始使用这些扣件来固定宇宙飞船上的一些设备。)” Dear Eric, How is everything going?________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hui 【答案】例文 Dear Eric, How is everything going? 41.
