In 613 BC, King Zhuang of Chu became the king. At this time, Jin saw a chance to gain power and convinced (劝说) smaller states, which had once been friends with Chu, to change sides. That made the ministers of Chu unhappy. They wanted King Zhuang to show strength and regain (恢复) their power.
However, King Zhuang didn’t listen. Instead, he lived a carefree life for three long years. He even made a rule: anyone who dared to give him advice would face punishment.
One minister, Wu Ju, could not stand by any longer. He decided to speak to King Zhuang. When he came, the king was busy having fun. King Zhuang asked, “What brings you here?” Wu replied, “I heard a riddle but couldn’t solve it. You are a wise king; please give it a try.”
King Zhuang smiled, “Tell me the riddle.” Wu said, “On the mountains of Chu, there is a great bird with colorful feathers. It looks proud but has not moved for three years. It neither flies nor sings. What kind of bird is that?”
“This bird is no ordinary (普通的),” King Zhuang replied. “If it doesn’t fly, it stays still. But when it does, it will soar (翱翔) high. If it doesn’t sing, it is quiet. But when it does, it will surprise everyone. I take your point.”

Have you ever wondered why you can still ride a bike years after learning, even if you haven’t practiced? Or how you quickly recognize a friend’s face in a crowded photo? The answers lie in the amazing mechanism (机制) of human memory — something far more developed than any AI memory system we have today.
Our memory is mainly built in a brain part called the hippocampus (海马体). When we experience something new, like a new song or a family gathering, brain cells fire together, creating a short-term pattern. Think of this as saving a note on your phone.
For this memory to last, it must be consolidated — moved from the “notes-folder” (记忆文件夹) to a longer-lasting memory storage in the brain, in this way we can remember and never forget something. This process often happens during deep sleep, which is why a good night’s rest beats staying up late to study hard for exams.
But memory isn’t perfect. Every time we recall a memory, we might a little change it before storing it again, like changing a photo and saving the new version. This is why two people can remember the same event differently, even if they were both there.
So, how can we improve this system? Active review — connecting new information to things you already know — is more useful than simple repeating. Linking a new English word to a familiar scene, for example, makes it easier to remember. Regular review and healthy sleep are the basics of strong, long-lasting memories.

Is Your Brain Rotting from Too Much Screen Time?
Have you ever felt your mind go “blank” after scrolling (滑动屏幕) on your phone for hours? If yes, you might be experiencing something called “brain rot” (脑退化)!
36 But today it describes what happens when we spend too much time online — especially on short videos or social apps. In 2024, Oxford even named it Word of the Year because so many people are talking about it.
37 You might forget why you walked into a room... or look for your phone while holding it! More seriously, it can make it harder to think clearly, solve problems, or stay calm. Your mood might swing quickly — from happy to upset — for no clear reason.
Good news: 38 Just reduce screen time. Try going offline for a few hours. Read a real book (not a 3-minute video summary!), play sports, or chat face-to-face with friends. 39
Think of your brain like a garden. You should water it with good habits — like sleep, reading, and real conversations. 40 And soon, flowers of creativity, focus, and joy will bloom inside you!
So put down your phone — and give your brain some fresh air!
A. Then it will grow strong.
B. What does brain rot feel like?
C. You don’t need medicine to fix it!
D. The term “brain rot” was first used in 1854.
E. These simple habits help your brain rest well.
