Passage 1
Jane Goodall is a world-famous scientist. This is the story of how she started her career (事业).
Jane was not very interested in animals when she was a child. Then, one day, her father gave her a toy chimpanzee (黑猩猩). She liked it very much. From that day on, she became really interested in animals.
When she was a 16-year-old schoolgirl, Jane dreamed of a career studying wild animals in Africa.
Jane’s mother said, “If you really want something, work hard and never give up. Then you’ll find a way.”
Jane’s mother was right. When she was 26, Jane travelled from Britain to the mountains of East Africa. She studied chimpanzees there for years. She watched the animals for a long time and they became her friends. Jane discovered (发现) that these animals greet one another with a kiss or a hug (拥抱), and make and use tools-just like humans do.
Some people questioned the methods Jane used in her research. Jane gave the chimpanzees human names and compared them to humans. People at the time thought she should not treat the chimpanzees too much like people. However, Jane did not give up. In the end, her discoveries changed how we think about humans and animals. Nowadays (如今), scientists believe that human beings have a lot in common with chimpanzees.
Jane Goodall is now well-known all over the world. She often gives speeches about her work because she wants people to protect the environment (环境). Her life story has inspired (启发) many young people all over the world.
Jane Goodall made her dreams come true because she never gave up. You can too.

Passage 2
What do you want to be when you grow up? Confucius (孔子) lived in the Kingdom of Lu, part of today’s Shandong Province. September 28th is his birthday. Although he was born over 2,000 years ago, people still remember him on this day.
His childhood was sad. His father died when he was only 3, so he had to work to help his mother. But young Confucius didn’t give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poetry and sports.
Later, he became a teacher and began his career. He started the first private school (私学) in Chinese history. At that time, only children from rich families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.
Today, people still follow his ideas. He told us that each person has something worthy (值得的) to learn and teach. “When I’m with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas.” He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. “All study but no thinking makes people confused. All thinking but no study makes people foolish.” Confucius is not only a great teacher but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. A.Learning by heart only.
B.Only rich children have the right to learn.
C.Learning and thinking should be combined.
4.Which statement is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Confucius’ father died when he was a little boy.
B.Confucius only learned music and history.
C.Confucius taught people to be strict with others.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C 4.A
【导语】本文主要介绍了中国古代著名思想家、教育家孔子的生平与思想贡献。

Passage 3
AI (人工智能) is like giving a superpower to computers. It helps them to learn things and do tasks that people usually do. According to scientists, AI could be used to tell the weather more quickly and correctly than traditional methods (方法).
The traditional way to tell the weather is by collecting data (数据) on what is happening in the air. The data may come from places like weather satellites (人造卫星), planes and so on. Then the data is sent to supercomputers for weather reports. Although supercomputers are powerful, it can take many hours to produce (产生) results.
AI models have been developed (开发) to quickly tell future weather. They can tell the weather by using two sets of data: the weather at present and the weather from six hours ago. AI models are very helpful. They can be used on standard computers like office computers, and it only takes a few minutes to get the results. However, the results may not include (包括) as much information as those produced by traditional models.
Will AI take the place of traditional models? Scientists say it probably won’t, but it will be used together with them. That’s because AI still needs to learn from the data collected by traditional methods. But hopefully, AI will be able to deal with tasks that older methods find difficult, such as telling when and how much it will rain in the near future. This could give people enough time to solve the problems caused (造成) by bad weather.
1.How does AI know about future weather?
A.By learning from satellites.
B.By comparing (对比) the past and present weather.
C.By collecting data from different places.
D.By watching what is happening in the sky.
2.What does the underlined word “standard” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.special B.slow C.normal D.expensive
3.Which task will AI probably do according to the last paragraph?
A.Reporting how much it will rain. B.Offering people weather maps.
C.Reporting when snow will end. D.Offering full weather information.
4.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.AI Will Cause Bad Weather B.AI Could Stop Bad Weather
C.AI Could Tell Future Weather D.AI Will Change Future Weather

Passage 5
In China, more and more people like to visit less famous places for trips instead of going to popular tourist spots. This new travel way is called “reverse tourism (反向旅游)”, and it’s getting more and more popular among young people these days.
An online travel company says that during holidays, hotel bookings in less-known cities were 30% more than last year. The bookings of good hotels in these places even went up a lot—at least 10 times more than before. Many small and unknown spots also had far more visitors. For example, a park in Jinan, Shandong Province, had over 52,000 visitors in seven days during the holiday. That was about 16% more than the same time last year. All these numbers show the fast growth of reverse tourism.
People choose to travel to less famous places for some simple reasons. First, there are not so many people there, so the trip is more relaxing. Second, traveling there costs less money than going to popular spots. What’s more, these places are not too commercial (商业化), so visitors can feel the real and special beauty of the local life. All these reasons tell us that people’s travel needs are changing, and that’s the main reason why reverse tourism is becoming popular.
A reporter says reverse tourism is a good thing for everyone. It not only gives travelers more different travel choices but also helps the whole tourism market grow better. At the same time, it also makes less-known places try to improve their travel service for visitors.
Jiang Han, a researcher, thinks reverse tourism will keep being popular in the future. He gives a good suggestion for the tourism market: we should search for the hidden beauty of these less-known places. We need to know more about their culture and show their special things to more people.

A.A popular park in Shandong Province.
B.The fast growth of reverse tourism.
C.The service of good hotels in small cities.

2.What is the main reason for the rise of reverse tourism?
A.Less-known places have better hotels.
B.People’s travel needs are changing.
C.Popular spots are too cheap to visit.
D.Young people hate traveling with others.
3.What does the reporter think of reverse tourism?
A.It is good for travelers and the tourism market.
B.It will make popular tourist spots lose visitors.
C.It is only popular among young people now.
D.It makes less-known places too commercial.
4.What advice does Jiang Han give for the tourism market?
A.To build more hotels in popular tourist spots.
B.To ask people not to travel to less-known places.
C.To look for the hidden beauty of less-known places.
D.To make more rules for online travel companies.

Passage 7
Good study habits are important for all students. When you have good study habits, you will learn faster and have a good memory. It is useful to have a good memory. When someone says he has a good memory, it means that he keeps practising by using it.
Do you usually study in the living room? This is not a good place for study because it is usually too noisy. You need to study in a quiet place, such as your bedroom. A quiet place will help you learn well. Before you begin to study, do not forget to clean your desk. I think it is necessary to put away your things. It helps you study well, too. Enough light is good for your study. You will feel tired easily if there is not enough light.
Of all the good study habits, one has developed: asking questions is the key. Just ask. No one knows everything, but we can always learn from others by asking questions. Another simple but helpful habit is to tell yourself what you are studying for. Put your dream grades on your desk. It means you will see and think about it every day.
When do you work best? Are you an early bird or a night owl (夜猫子), or something in between? Find your most productive (高效率的) work time and then plan to study at the time. I believe you will make great progress in your study.

Each year many people get lost in the mountains. Losing one's way in the forest can be an uneasy and terrible experience. However, if you find you've got lost, stop at once. In many cases, you will find that following your footsteps will bring you back to the road. If not, follow these steps:
Stay calm. If you get lost, panic is your greatest enemy. If you run wildly around, even for a little while you could lose your sense of direction. Try to remember how you got to your present location.
Start marking. Leave markers wherever you go, so you can return back. Also, if people try to rescue(营救)you, they will look for markers. So make as many of them as you can. On every turn, try to mark the direction you are taking. You got off the road, maybe ten minutes ago, so if you retrace(折回)more than that time, you know you are on the wrong way.
Stay put. Remember that if you can't retrace your steps, then it's better to just stay where you are and let the searchers find you. Sing loudly or shout for help when you hear others trying to find you. If you have a whistle (哨子), blow it. Moreover, stay in the open so they can find you easily. Do not hide in the unseen areas.
Follow down a river. It can be hard to go but will often lead to a road. And you will finally come back to a village or a town.

Thanks to technology, the way we communicate with others has greatly changed. How do you feel about it? Would you prefer to live in a world with or without mobile phones?
I ordered some snacks on my phone the other afternoon. Once I got home from work that evening, I saw they were already at my door. So prompt! Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example. Before phones, if you wanted to keep in touch with someone far away, you needed to send them a letter in the mail. When my mom was in primary school, she used to do this with her “pen pal”. A pen pal is a name for a person you keep in touch with mainly through postal mail. My mom would write to her pen pal every few months, and then, after a little while, her pen pal would write back. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. If you needed to exit (离开) the airport and wanted to leave a message for a friend who would be arriving later, you could write them a message and stick it on the message board.

B.It will make popular tourist spots lose visitors.
C.It is only popular among young people now.

Passage 12

One day, she told us that our class would put on a play she had written. “I need someone to play the lead role. Does anybody want to try?” she asked. A few excited hands shot up, mine wasn’t one of them. Mrs. Smith walked up to me and said, “I think you’re perfect for it. But you don’t raise your hand.”

Have you ever thought about how people in the past communicated and did things without mobile phones? Take the post for example. Later, once email became a common thing, sending letters by post felt so slow to people. It became known as “snail mail”!
What if you were at an airport in the time before mobile phones? My dad said that in the 1970s, there used to be message boards at some airports. Passage 15
Chinese New Year painting, or nianhua in Chinese, is a kind of traditional painting to be put up on walls and windows during the Spring Festival. Its bright colors and different subjects show the Chinese great expectation for happiness and wealth.
Chinese New Year painting is an old handicraft. Its original (最初的) form was a picture of a door god during the Tang Dynasty. Later, more subjects such as the Kitchen God, women and babies were included. As the Chinese New Year arrives, every family puts up its New Year paintings in order to say goodbye to the past and welcome the future. One of the most famous woodblock New Year paintings comes from Yangjiabu of Shandong Province. It covers all kinds of themes and forms. They reflect people’s everyday life.
As time went by, people found New Year paintings old-fashioned. Besides, they considered the door god too frightening to hang in their homes. They wanted something more artistic. So in the middle of the 1980s, the sales of New Year paintings dropped greatly.
Usually, colorful woodblock New Year paintings are produced in four steps. Firstly, artists draw a simple sketch (素描) on the paper. Secondly, they make the simple sketch on the wooden board and print a few samples. Thirdly, they add color to the sample. Passage 16
Hanfu fashion has become more and more popular with young people. China has followed Western fashion designs in recent years, but a growing number of young people are now looking to the past for fashion ideas.
If you look closely around your city, you might notice hanfu, the traditional clothing of the Han dynasty. In a recently published report by an online shopping platform, about 2 million hanfu clothes were sold in 2020, nearly 4 times as many as those sold in 2019. Most of the buyers are between 19 and 24 years old.
But why has this traditional clothing become popular with young Chinese people? For some of them, it’s a costume for relaxation. Dafan, a 24-year-old college student, told CGTN that dressing in hanfu is a way for her to get away from the troubles of real life. Modern clothing, on the other hand, represents the identity (身份) people need to show every day. “Hanfu and modern clothing help me to show the different sides in me,” she said.
Other teenagers like hanfu because of the culture behind it. They see it as a way to reconnect (再连接) with traditions. Its wide sleeves, crossed collars (领口) and flowing robes (飘逸的长袍) bring people back to ancient times.
“Hanfu is the symbol (象征) of the Chinese traditional culture.” Nanhe, a 21-year-old costume studio owner, told CGTN.
