I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was excited. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”注意:

Alma, shy and quiet, started ninth grade in a high school in the center of the town. Never had she imagined loneliness would wrap around her like a shadow. Soon she found herself dreaming of her old eight-grade class, which had been small, but warm and familiar. For her, this new school was much too cold, unfriendly, and indifferent.
Each morning, Alma’s stomach twisted as she pushed through the heavy school doors. Students brushed past her without a glance as if she were invisible. No one at this school seemed to care whether she belonged or not. Though she was caring and kind-hearted, her shy voice was always caught in her throat and her eyes were downcast when she tried to say something, which particularly became a barrier to friendship.
The few classmates did notice her existence only when they needed something — a pencil to borrow, or favors that never returned. Tammy, her “so-called” closest friend, who was busy with her speech competition, smiled only when she needed answers for a test or help with her homework. Day after day, she moved through the halls like a ghost, unheard and unseen. Slowly, she began to believe her thoughts weren’t good enough to be heard. So she continued to stay quiet and almost mute. This pushed Alma closer to the edge.
Her parents grew increasingly worried about her, for they feared she would never make friends. Her parents tried everything they could to help her fit in. However, it still didn’t work. Night after night, she cried herself to sleep and was convinced that no one would ever truly care for her and love her enough to be her real friend.
As that semester was coming to an end, Alma decided to take one last chance. With trembling hands, she signed up for the Speech Club, though she expected nothing.

The cold weather forced the large red dog to bend into a tighter ball. Old Red lived outside Larry’s barbershop, sleeping on a small carpet. He had stayed there for a hot summer.
Old Red once had a friend—a black dog. But one night, his friend disappeared and Old Red was alone again. I always wished Old Red had his home. I would have adopted him in a minute. But we lived in a small apartment with our kids and we were unable to spare money for a dog’s medicine and food. I wondered who was feeding Old Red daily.
One day I found it out. “My husband even buys the most expensive food for Old Red,” Larry’s wife smiled. “He wants to bring him home, but his old mother living with us fears dogs extremely.” I then thanked Larry for his care. He brushed aside my thanks, insisting the dog meant nothing to him. During a snowstorm, Old Red disappeared. I asked Larry where he could be. “I’m glad he’s gone. He was a bother,” Larry said, busily cutting a customer’s hair. Later, his wife told me Larry was actually looking for the dog
On the third day, the dog reappeared. But I felt his nose: hot and dry. Bursting into the barbershop, I yelled, “Larry, Old Red is sick!” Larry replied, “I know. He won’t eat.”
I left the shop; for hours I tried to get someone to help Old Red, but in vain. My husband asked with pity, “Do you want me to go and look at that dog with you?” Quickly grabbing a blanket and antibiotics (抗生素) one of our children had been taking, we piled our kids in the car, driving to Larry’s shop. To my shock, Old Red was gone and couldn’t be found.
The next day I took the boys in for a haircut. Old Red was back, but looked worse than ever. After feeling his hot nose, I ran into the barbershop.

Jenny has been a vet (兽医) for many years. Throughout her practice, there have been many unusual cases. Some were quite sad and some were even funny. But most of all she remembered one time on a rainy day a little girl came to her with her little guinea pig (豚鼠).
She was in tears and asked Jenny to save her beloved pet. “This is my only friend. I really love my Dorothy,” the girl said. Jenny examined the animal and realized that it was very ill. The pig looked young. Probably, it was already sick when it was sold to the girl. The vet saw many children’s tears, and each time she felt awful. But she always found the strength to say that she couldn’t save the pet.
However, this time she looked at the girl and couldn’t say anything. Jenny saw how simply the girl was dressed and thought that her family didn’t make a lot of money. Therefore, the pig wasn’t just a pet for her, but a real treasure.
“Tell me your phone number, so I can call you after the operation,” Jenny said.
“I’ll give you my grandmother’s phone number, because I live with her. My parents were gone. Grandma said that they had gone somewhere far and for a long time. By the way, they gave me the pig before leaving,” the girl said.
Jenny wrote down the number, and when the girl left the clinic, she burst into tears. She realized her parents had died and the girl didn’t know the truth yet. How could she tell her that her guinea pig was going to die? Jenny looked at the animal helplessly and wondered what she could do. Suddenly she came up with an idea. But before doing it, she put the guinea pig to sleep, and went to the nearest pet store during lunchtime. She wanted to buy exactly the same guinea pig and give it to the girl.

For the rest of the week, Joe practiced kicking football hard, concentrating on his each kicking. Sometimes Joe hit the ball straight. Sometimes it went wide again. But it seemed that the more he believed he could do it, the easier it was.
“I’m not a joke now,” thought Joe. “Not a joke at all!” But a practice wasn’t like a real match and his boots were still not giving him enough power. He should have told his mum and dad about it straight away but, of course, he didn’t. He was always shy to ask for things.
Finally, late on the night before the match, he could hold himself back no longer.
“Dad, I haven’t got any proper football boots…” he said.
“Ah,” said Dad, “I might be able to help you there.”
At the words, Joe was excited. New boots! He thought. “He’s got me some new boots! He must have got me them for Christmas,” thought Joe, “But now that I’m in an important match, he’s giving them to me early. Wonderful!”
Dad went upstairs. Joe excitedly tried to watch the football preview on TV. He wasn’t playing for Manchester United or Liverpool, of course, but he was part of it all now; part of the thrill. His legs twitched with every kick on the screen. His head shook with every centre. And all the time, his mind was racing ahead to his own great game the next morning, in his super new boots.
It was ages before his dad came downstairs again. He put a large pair of shiny black boots in front of Joe. As he stared at them, the boy felt as if someone had poured ice into his brain. The boots were awful!
“Good, eh?” said his dad. Joe found it hard to speak. He had never seen anything like them before. They weren’t low-cut, soft or… They had big, hard square toes, great big long studs (饰扣) and they were high at the ankle. They were his dad’s old rugby boots, polished up.
“Have a try!” Dad encouraged, presenting Joe the boots.

David loved writing. When the school announced an English writing competition, David was eager to participate. He worked hard on his entry, believing it was his chance to prove himself. However, when the results were announced, David’s name wasn’t there. He felt a deep sense of disappointment and frustration, as if all his hard work had been in vain.
After the competition, David felt too embarrassed to talk about his failure. He spent days in his room, avoiding everyone. His former imagination seemed to have dried up, and he couldn’t find the motivation to write anymore. It felt like a part of him had been destroyed.
One afternoon, as David sat in his room, his English teacher, Mr. Carter, came to visit. Mr. Carter was a kind and encouraging teacher who had always believed in David s potential. He had noticed David’s absence in class and decided to check in on him.
“Hey, David,” Mr. Carter said gently. “I heard about the competition. I’m really sorry you didn’t win, but I know how much effort you put into it. You should be proud of yourself for trying.” David looked down, feeling defeated. “I just don’t get it, Mr. Carter,” he said quietly. “I worked so hard, but it wasn’t enough. I feel like I’m never going to be good enough.”
Mr. Carter sat down next to David and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder., He said, “David, writing is not just about winning competitions. It’s about expressing yourself and sharing your ideas. Sometimes, even the best writers don’t win. But that doesn’t mean they’re not good. It just means they need to keep trying and learning.”
With Mr. Carter’s encouragement, David began to analyze his writing. They discussed the strengths and weaknesses of his entry, and Mr. Carter offered valuable suggestions. David started to feel more confident and motivated. He realized that failure was just a part of the learning process.

Seventeen-year-old Alex lived in a small town where everyone knew each other. His family struggled to make ends meet, and he often felt ashamed of their worn-out bike, which had a squeaky (嘎吱作响的) wheel and a rusty chain. Whenever he passed the sleek bikes parked outside the high school, Alex would put his baseball cap lower, hoping no one would notice his ride.
One afternoon, he noticed Mrs. Thompson, his elderly neighbor, struggling to carry groceries up her driveway. Alex jogged over without a moment’s hesitation. “Here, let me carry those for you,” he said, his voice warm with urgency. “Thank you, dear.” Mrs. Thompson said, smiling, “My son, James, used to do this for me. He’s overseas now.” She invited Alex in for lemonade, and they talked for hours. Alex learned that Mrs. Thompson’s son was very busy, and she missed him deeply.
The next morning, Alex found an envelope under his front doormat. A folded note was inside it. “You’re a kind soul. Please use this.” The neat handwriting read. It was from Mrs. Thompson. Besides, he found a key carved with the word Garage. Heart pounding, he unlocked Mrs. Thompson’s garage door. Sunlight went through dusty windows, landing on a gleaming silver bicycle — a vision of polished metal and smooth leather, untouched by time.
“It’s been sitting here for years,” Mrs. Thompson said gently from behind him. “James wants someone to love it again. And I think that someone is you.” Alex hesitated. The bike was clearly expensive. But Mrs. Thompson insisted, “It’s been gathering dust. Your legs are younger than mine.”
Weeks later, the silver bike became a fixture in the town. Alex used the bike to run errands for Mrs. Thompson, deliver groceries to other neighbors, and even teach kids in the park how to ride.

Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson? Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fire. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.注意:

In the picturesque hills of Yorkshire, England, two hikers, Jack and Tom, decided to challenge themselves with a 15-mile trek(跋涉)to a place called High Crag. The idea had seemed straightforward when their sports teacher, Mr. Pike, put it forward. However, reality turned out to be much tougher than they had anticipated.
The rear light of the minibus that had brought them to the village disappeared into the mist enveloping the mountains.“ Well, let’s go” said Jack, and Tom adjusted his backpack.
The walking wasn’t too difficult at first. The summer season had ended and the soft mountain grass had blanketed the footpath. In just an hour, they had covered over three miles. By three o’ clock in the afternoon, they were more than halfway there. Then they reached a fork in the path. Jack took out the map and studied it carefully.“ There’s no fork here on the map,” he said, frowning. They tried retracing their steps, but the mist had started to roll in, making it harder to see. Tom’s heart sank as the mist thickened. He could barely see more than a few feet ahead. Jack, however, remained calm.“ We’ll find our way,” he comforted Tom.
As they continued, the path grew rougher. The mist made it difficult to see where they were going, and progress slowed. Tom twisted his ankle on a hidden rock but managed to keep going with Jack’s help. They knew they had to find shelter soon—it would be dark in a few hours. After another ten minutes of walking, they reached a track with fresh tire marks.“ This must lead somewhere,” Jack said hopefully. They followed it downhill, but soon the track began to rise again.
Just when Tom thought they might have to spend the night in the open, Jack spotted something through the mist.“ There’s a barn(谷仓) ahead” he exclaimed. It was an old stone building, partially hidden by the fog, but it looked solid and dry. Jack noticed a small window on the side of the barn, which seemed accessible.

Vanessa, an elderly woman, lost her beloved husband a couple of years ago. With no children of their own, she had to live on her own.
For years, Vanessa had wanted to repair their aging roof, fearing it wouldn’t withstand heavy rain or snow. However, her husband had always dismissed her concerns, insisting that the roof was in good condition.
But after her husband’s sudden and tragic accident, Vanessa’s worries grew. She became increasingly fearful of losing her cherished home to the forces of nature. She decided to hire a team of workers to fix her roof once and for all. She treated the workers well, cooking meals and bringing them drinks she’d made herself.
Among the workers, only Joseph, the youngest in the group, truly showed kindness and compassion towards Vanessa. He’d sometimes stay after work to help her fix some things at home for free. Joseph’s soft spot for Vanessa sprang from his past. Having grown up as an orphan (孤儿) and never having known his own parents, he deeply appreciated Vanessa’s care and wanted to give back in any way he could.
On the final day of repairing the roof, one worker named Josh made a surprising discovery. Hidden beneath one of the layers of roofing, he found a wooden box. Excitedly, he called over the other workers to take a look. Eager to uncover the secrets within, one of the workers used a hammer to break the lock. As they opened the box, their eyes widened in astonishment. Inside, they found a lot of gold jewelry, a large sum of money, and a letter from Vanessa’s late husband to her.
Overwhelmed by the unexpected treasure, Josh claimed, “We’ve hit the jackpot, guys This is our lucky day!” Immediately, another worker suggested they secretly divide the fortune amongst themselves, planning to store it in their cars until they left the house. However, Joseph disagreed. “That wouldn’t be right,” he said. “These items could be important heirlooms (传家宝) to Vanessa.” Josh, shaking his head, responded, “Come on, Joseph, why would an elderly woman without a family need all these things?”

It had been a long and exhausting day. My husband was out of town for the third night in a row, the house was a mess, the phone kept ringing, laundry and papers were everywhere, my six-year-old twins were screaming, and my head was pounding.
“Mom, Jake came in my room!”
“I did not!”
“Yes, you did … Mom — he’s not listening!”
“You’re not the boss of me!”
“But it’s my room!”
“So what! Who do you think you are, Princess Tara or something?”
“Mom, Jake is calling me Princess Tara again! Mom!”
I screamed, “Stop it, you two!” Rather than quiet them, my loud reprimand caused their voices to escalate.
“BUT MOM, I TOLD HIM TO GET OUT OF MY ROOM!”
“BUT MOM, SHE COMES IN MY ROOM SOMETIMES WHEN I TELL HER NOT TO. . . .”
I asked my children to work it out between themselves and decided to find a quiet room for a few moments.
Within a minute they burst in.
“Mom, she won’t share her Disney characters.”
“Well, that’s because you didn’t share your markers with me the last time I asked you, right, Mom?”
“Mom?”
“Mom?”
I gathered my children and whispered, “Jake and Tara, let’s go hug each other quietly for a few moments. I don’t feel very well. I’m also feeling sad right now.”
Their response was quite different than when I had shouted at them to quiet down. With rather serious looks on their faces, they asked, “But why are you sad, Mom?”
“I don’t really know,” I replied. “I just know I need some quiet time and some extra special love from both of you right now.”
“Okay, Mommy,” they whispered. With a big hug and some “I love you’s,” they said, “Okay, Mommy, you just relax here a few minutes.” As they walked away, I heard a lot of excited, mysterious whispers.

Mary watched as students crowded around a notice announcing that the school’s radio station was looking for a second host. Butterflies filled her stomach—she had always dreamed of becoming a campus host.
The radio station was a big deal: it aired music, school announcements, and entertaining shows that everyone tuned into during lunch breaks. Olivia, the current host, was confident and talented, earning widespread admiration. In contrast, Mary was naturally shy, and speaking in front of others made her nervous. Still, she decided to give it a try, even as a classmate remarked, “You? You can barely read aloud in class without stumbling (磕磕绊绊)!”
Not discouraged, Mary practiced every evening by reading aloud from her textbooks. At first, she stumbled over her words, but gradually her reading grew smoother and her pronunciation clearer. She even borrowed books on public speaking from the library to learn vocal techniques. While her classmates chatted and laughed, she quietly absorbed every detail, determined to build her skills.
The day of the interview finally arrived. Holding the cold microphone, Mary felt her hands grow sweaty. She read the required texts perfectly—rehearsed (排练) thousands of times—but she struggled during the improvised (即兴的) part.
“Sir, I’ve been practicing for months, and I’m willing to work hard to learn,” she begged.
Mr. Carter smiled gently and said, “I appreciate your determination and your excellent reading. But during a live broadcast, anything can happen, and you need to draw your audience’s attention with genuine emotion rather than simply reading from a script.”
That day, no one passed the interview; everyone left except Mary. Lost in thought, she realized, “The problem isn’t with my pronunciation or reading…” It suddenly struck her that she could join the radio team in a supporting role to learn what it truly takes to be a host.

Dress-Up Day
Lily had been working on her bunny costume for weeks. She cut up an old gray sweater to make floppy ears, glued white cotton balls onto a belt for a tail, and even drew a mask with a pink nose. Her mom’s silver-painted sunglasses completed her “mysterious moon rabbit” look. She couldn’t wait to hop through school and make her classmates smile. Her school’s Dress-Up Day was supposed to be the best day ever—until she woke up with a fever the night before.
“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” her mom said, pressing a cool towel to Lily’s forehead, “You need to rest.” Shivering under blankets, she listened to the rain outside and tears welled up her eyes. Lily stared at her costume hanging on the closet door, its ears drooping (下垂) as sadly as she felt. She cried herself to sleep, imagining her classmates laughing in their superhero capes and princess gowns without her.
“Why not wear it to school today? You worked so hard.” her mom said the next morning, handing her the costume, “Real magic isn’t confined (局限) to a single day.” Lily hesitated. Going late felt like showing up to a party after the cake was gone. But she stuffed the costume Rabbit into her backpack anyway.
Lily’s heart pounded as she entered school late. The hallway felt huge and empty as Lily shuffled in, ears drooping. Whispers coiled (盘绕) around her like smoke, “Is she a sick rabbit?” “Look at those strange glasses!” Her cheeks burned hotter than her fever had. Her ears drooped as she stared at the floor, wishing she could disappear.
Suddenly, a noise came. A boy jumped out of a locker, his orange sweatshirt lumpy with foam padding, a green beanie sprouting felt leaves. Everyone turned. There stood Hugo, a shy boy from her science class, wearing a bright orange T-shirt stuffed with pillows. He had a green paper hat shaped like carrot leaves and brown boots. He looked like a carrot.

A red car finally pulled over by a fantastic house. Out came the Smith family, including a 10-year-old girl, the Smiths’ youngest daughter, Amy, with her precious piggy-bank safe tightly held in her arms. They just moved to the new city as Mr Smith landed a better job here.
The next morning, while Amy was wondering where she could keep her piggy-bank safe, her mom patted her back lovingly and said, “Dear, I know you have worked hard to earn these 80 pounds. You watered plants over the weekend, you took care of our neighbor’s little boy Oliver, baby-sitting him and you washed Uncle Henry’s cars. The following Monday, Amy went to her new school. As soon as she reached the school gate, she noticed a group of girls standing there. Amy hesitantly walked up to them and asked about the way to her classroom. However, the arrogant (傲慢的) girls gave her a cold look and turned around to face Amy with their back. Amy had never imagined that and she had tears running down her cheeks.
Just then, a sweet girl appeared. She smartly sent those girls away. Amy was so grateful to her. “Hello, I am Emily,” the girl introduced herself, reaching out her hands to give Amy a warm handshake. Amy thanked Emily for her help. Emily quickly responded, “Well, that’s what friends are for!”
Amy gradually started liking her new school. She liked Emily. Over the months, their friendship grew stronger. They spent their lunch breaks together, talked about their dreams, and laughed over silly jokes. Emily’s kindness and support became a beacon of light in Amy’s new school life.

Jacob had always admired firefighters. Their bravery and dedication to saving lives inspired him. He dreamed of becoming one himself someday. One evening, as he was walking home from his part-time job at the local grocery store, he noticed smoke billowing (涌出) from a house down the street. Without thinking twice, he ran towards the house.
As he got closer, he could hear the crackling of flames and the faint sound of someone calling for help. Jacob’s heart raced. He knew he had to act fast. He pulled out his phone and dialed 911, giving them the address and details. Then, he took a deep breath and decided to go inside.
Jacob pushed the front door and opened it with his shoulder. The thick smoke made it hard to see, but he could make out the shape of a woman at the top of the stairs. “Help! My daughter is upstairs! ” she cried.
Jacob covered his mouth with his sleeve as he made his way up the stairs. The heat was intense, and the smoke stung (刺痛) his eyes, but he pressed on. He found the little girl hiding under her bed. “It’s okay,” he said, “I’m here to help you.” He gently pulled her out and carried her down the stairs.
As they reached the bottom, the firefighters arrived. Jacob handed the girl to her mother, who hugged him tightly, tears streaming down her face. “Thank you, you saved my daughter’s life.”
Jacob stayed with the family until the firefighters declared the house safe. He watched as they worked tirelessly to put out the fire and ensure it didn’t spread to neighboring homes. The mother and daughter were taken to the hospital for a check-up, but they would be okay. As Jacob walked home that night, he couldn’t shake the feeling of pride and responsibility that had settled over him. He had faced a dangerous situation and had made a difference. Alex is a 10-year-old boy who lives in the quiet Canadian town of Willowbrook. Despite coming from a family with little money, he was enthusiastic about learning and did well in his subjects. His mother, who worked as a nurse, is a living example of self-sufficiency and was his biggest supporter after his father left them.
One of his classmates, Jake, who comes from a better-off family and thinks himself cleverer than any other person, always makes cruel jokes about Alex’s worn-out trainers and second-hand jacket at school. Although he sometimes feels depressed, Alex never lets this stop him from loving school and doing his best.
One afternoon, during a survival skills class at school, Alex listened attentively as the teacher, Mr. Brown, an experienced outdoorsman, showed the class how to make a spark from a flint (打火石).“In survival situations,” the teacher said, “it’s not just about the physical, it’s about the mental strength to keep going.” Alex took these words to heart, his eyes shining with interest.
On a school trip to the nearby forest, Alex and his classmates, including Jake, went on a hike. As the group went deeper into the forest, the undergrowth grew thicker and Alex found himself separated from the others. But it was Jake who really got lost. He wandered off the trail because he was proud and wanted to prove that he could navigate the forest on his own.
As evening approached, Jake’s confidence began to slip and he found himself alone in the dark. Panic began to set in. He felt remorseful (懊悔的) and helpless and began to call for help in a shaky voice. That’s when Alex, who had been looking for a way back to the trail, found him. Jake, who was usually the one to make fun of him, was now standing there, looking humble and scared. His pride had been replaced by a look of concern.
“Hey, Jake, it’s going to be OK,” Alex said, his voice calm and reassuring. “We’ll get through this together.”

One day Albert found a baby bird lying on the ground, squawking (叫喊) for help. Feeling sad for the bird, Albert petted it gently and wanted to help it, but he didn’t know how since he was just 7 years old. So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, Albert dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, Albert immediately offered to care for the bird.
Albert named his new friend “Lucky”. He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest for the bird. Then, he put the nest beside his bed. Albert and the bird were sleeping together and living together. Soon they became close friends. Albert always told it about his experiences in school and his secrets. Lucky, an extremely patient audience, usually responded to him with a few nods and chirps (叽叽喳喳声). Albert’s parents also loved Lucky. They regarded it as a family member.
In the course of time, Lucky gradually recovered and started to hop (脚跳) and jump a little bit and exercise its wings. That made everyone happier. Soon it would be able to fly. How wonderful!
But what then? Albert became thoughtful and started to think. “If Lucky started to fly, it could simply fly away one day.” But that would not happen. Albert loved his friend so much that he couldn’t imagine parting with it. He wondered, “I should surely stay with Lucky forever. But how? Keep the windows closed all the time? That was not practical.”

Tionae Thomas couldn’t be prouder of her 14-year-old daughter. Plenty of people overlooked a boy sitting alone under a tree in a shopping center parking lot. But not Tionae’s daughter. The 14-year-old girl stepped in to help the stranded(滞留) boy. And the Internet is applauding this girl for her kindness!
Tionae and her daughter were on the way home. But as they passed a shopping center, Tionae’s daughter begged her to pull over. She’d noticed a boy who looked like he was most likely in elementary school. He sat all alone under a tree in a small island within the parking lot.
“It’s too hot, mama,” the girl told her mom.
So, Tionae pulled over and her daughter got out, asking the stranded boy where his parents were. But the boy didn’t know.
The kind girl let the stranded boy use her cell phone to give his dad a call. Then she suggested he move from his spot under the tree to the front of a nearby Rite Aid. She told him it would be safer. At the same time, the girl left him her phone number and told him that he could call her if necessary.
Getting back into the car with her mom, the girl asked to wait to make sure the stranded boy got picked up. She hated the idea of leaving him alone. And because of the warmer temperatures, she wanted to get him some water.
Plenty of others must have noticed the boy. Maybe they left him alone because they didn’t want to disturb or scare him. Maybe they just thought someone else would do something. But Tionae’s daughter was the only one to step in and help.
Para 1: Two days later, the girl received the boy’s call.

To some people, the sizzle and clatter of restaurant kitchens might be like an orchestra; to me, such sounds behind the swinging doors just meant chaos. However unpleasant I felt the places were, I decided to apply for a part-time job at a popular restaurant. The reason was simple: I needed money. I wanted to join a camping trip to the Blue Mountains with my friends, but that would cost about 150 dollars. “You have to pay for entertainment by yourself,” my parents said.
So I applied, and Mr. Smith, the boss of the restaurant, allowed me to have a try. My job was super easy and boring: the newly prepared dishes would be put at the counter between the kitchen and dining room, and it was my duty to deliver them to the right customers.
The first few days were tiring but OK. However, setbacks soon followed as I struggled to keep pace during a particularly busy lunch rush. I awkwardly spilled a tray of drinks, making loud noises and the floor messy. I was embarrassed and began to feel nervous. One evening, I mixed up orders for a large party, causing chaos and frustration.
I felt desperate. I screwed everything up. Then I heard Mr. Smith call me, and I went into his office with my head low. To my surprise, he didn’t blame me. Instead, he made me a cup of coffee. “Relax, young man,” he said. “Try to smile. Things always go wrong if you can’t really enjoy what you’re doing. Feel the fun in the job, and you’ll be OK!”
I thought he was right. The next day when I was working, I glimpsed into the kitchen and was amazed: in the narrow and crowded space everyone was busy — the chefs swirling (翻动) pans, the manager yelling customers’ requirements, others coming and going with dishes to deliver — but everything went smoothly without any lumping or bumping. This was incredible!

The Making of a Believer
It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl, who is chubby and cute, fond of sitting in her one-and-only spot near the nearth (壁炉). AS I got ready, I could hear icy rain pouring down. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm, I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. It was the season for miracles, after all.
That summer, my sweet cat had disappeared from my parents’ house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D.C. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.
My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family’s resident “realistic”, which mean the spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her” he said. I rolled my eyes. Dad always supported me, but he was so skepticat. He could do with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see her Baby-Girl again. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after T returned to D.C. without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
How, home again for the holidays, I was de tem mined to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, then persuaded Dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she’d been found.
“Sharon, you have to be realistic,” my dad said as we headed to the garage. “She’s been gone too long. You’re not going to find her.”
“Well, I just have a feeling,” I said
Dad raised an eyebrow a she climbed into the driver’s seat to take me to the shelter.

【答案】
With only three days left, my pressure increased gradually. I brainstormed, then invited Jake and Lily home. Opening my grandfather’s diary, I pointed at the faded photo of his class. “Your camera can save the moment for the future,” I told Jake, whose eyes suddenly sparkled. Then I suggested he photograph every corner of the school like “time travelers”. Meanwhile, Lily was engaged in my grandfather’s love letter, eager to bring hidden stories back to life. I organized layouts, combining historical accuracy with creativity. Laughter replaced frustration as the clock ticked.
On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. We stood by the blackboard as everyone went through the pages. They examined the brochure carefully, with their fingers tracing the photos, narratives and timelines which a connected three generations of graduates. Faces held surprise. Mr. Dow tapped our shining names: “This isn’t just for the anniversary—it’s about how its spirit lives through students’ cooperation.” That afternoon, seeing our brochure displayed, we knew combined talents created what none could alone.

One afternoon, a card on her desk caught her eyes. With curiosity, she opened it, surprisingly finding that it was the card from Tammy, which noted, “Hi, Alma! I’m terribly sorry for not caring about you due to my speech competition preparation. I’m happy to know that you signed up for the Speech Club. Let’s embark on a journey of speech exploration together! Your forever friend!” These words pierced straight into her soul. For the first time, she realized someone actually cared for her. Holding the handmade card with a blooming sunflower painted on the front, Alma felt deeply moved, excited and happy tears welling up.
From that day on, Alma’s world began to change. She began to feel hopeful about her new school life. In the Speech Club, Tammy helped her a lot, they devoted themselves to improving their speech skills. Alma volunteered to help the classmates in need, never asking for anything in return, her caring as well as kind-hearted qualities won her many friends. Most importantly, the “cold, unfriendly, and indifferent” school faded into memory. Instead, she discovered a warm and familiar school—one where she was truly seen and heard.

【答案】
Looking at him, I said anxiously, “Larry. I’m afraid the dog is suffering too much.” The words slipped out of my mouth with a mix of frustration and desperation. Larry replied with inappropriate calmness, “I know, I haven’t seen him move all morning.” I couldn’t understand how Larry, who had cared for the dog all this time, could remain so indifferent to his fate. I then left the shop with a heavy heart. Driving home, my kids kept asking me whether Old Red would be okay. I nodded sympathetically, and we all prayed for him. One day later Larry’s wife called, “Guess what?” “After you left that day, Larry found a vet online,” she said and paused.
“Then the vet gave him a shot. He’s improving now.” Larry’s wife added excitedly. On hearing these words, I sighed with relief. I thanked her for the good news and joked, “Your husband is really sharp-tongued but tender-hearted.” With Larry’s continual help, Old Red’s tail wagged weakly again. Seeing Larry kneel beside the dog, gently offering him food, his mother, though initially fearful, was touched and softened. It was love that broke barriers, proving that compassion could melt even the coldest fears. From that day on, Old Red had not only just a carpet by the shop, but a home where he belonged—a testament to the power of kindness to transform lives.

【答案】 However, finding it wasn’t so easy. The sick pet was black with a white spot on the nose, which was uniquely uncommon. Her attempt to find one nearby in vain, a flush of disappointment swept over Jenny. However, at the thought of the girl’s misty eyes, Jenny continuously went to extraordinary lengths to find a matching pig. Fortunately, her persistent efforts paid off. In a store 8 kilometers away from her clinic, she found an identical pig. Hardly had she returned to the clinic when she called the girl, “Honey, good news for you. Dorothy has pulled through and you can take her home!” On hearing the news, the girl hurried to the pet store with her grandmother.
Her grandmother understood everything the moment she saw the pet, but the girl didn’t notice the change. Eyes twinkling with excitement, tears of joy streamed down her cheeks. Meanwhile, grandma directed a meaningful look at Jenny, a great sense of gratitude flowing in her aged eyes, saying tearfully, “My dear doctor, you’ve really saved Dorothy and also protected her owner’s sunshine.” With her hands held tightly by grandma, Jenny truly realized a tiny gesture of kindness may brighten up someone’s life. Roses given, fragrance in hand. With her heart lightening up with happiness, Jenny was determined to keep kindness alive in her clinic and guard everyone’s “Dorothy”.

With the boots, Joe stepped onto the field.

【答案】
“Have a try!” Dad encouraged, presenting Joe the boots. Joe frowned at the big, heavy shoes, their leather surface shinning. “They are for rugby, not football,” he complained. “Boots won’t score goals,” Dad smiled, patting his shoulders. “It’s your heart and effort that win matches.” Joe stared at the clunky shoes, recalling nights spent perfecting his tricks. Slowly, Dad’s words sank in — a heavy boot couldn’t hold back the determination in his heart. Nodding silently, he tightened the laces, a spark of resolve replacing his doubt.
With the boots, Joe stepped onto the field. The shoes felt like stones on his feet, and every run made his heels ache. But as the match went on, he forgot the discomfort. In the final minute, a pass flew toward him; he jumped, boots awkward but his strike firm. The ball hit the back of the net! Teammates shouted and hugged him. Later, smiling and sweaty, Joe told Dad, “You were right. It’s about believing in myself.” The old rugby boots hung by his bed that night — not as a reminder of lack, but a sign of his new confidence: true strength comes from within.

【答案】
Over the next few weeks, David threw himself back into his writing. He practiced every day, incorporating Mr. Carter’s advice. He wrote essays, short stories, and even poetry, constantly pushing himself to improve. Slowly but surely, his confidence grew, and he began to enjoy writing again. He found that the more he wrote, the more ideas flowed through his mind. Each word he put on paper felt like a small victory, and he started to see his writing in a new light. He realized that the joy of writing wasn’t just in winning competitions, but in the process of creation itself.
The next school year brought another writing competition. This time, David was determined to give it his best shot. He submitted an essay that he had worked on for weeks, feeling more prepared and hopeful than ever before. When the results were announced, David’s heart raced with anticipation. To his delight, his name was called as one of the winners. He couldn’t believe it — he had done it! All the hard work and perseverance had paid off. David knew that this victory was not just his own; it was evidence for the power of believing in oneself and never giving up.

【答案】范文
One afternoon, Alex found Mrs. Thompson crying softly, “It’s my son’s birthday.” Hearing this, Alex hugged her gently. That night, he organized a surprise party with the neighbors. They decorated Mrs. Thompson’s yard with balloons, baked a cake, and even convinced the local radio station to play her son’s favorite song. When Mrs. Thompson saw the gathering, she was deeply touched and burst into tears of joy. Mrs. Thompson smiled through tears as Alex lit the candles, the silver bike’s bell ringing softly in the background like a warm hug. They also managed to make a call to her son, in which James told his mom that he would be back soon.
As planned in the call, James returned home later and he saw Alex riding his bike. When Mrs. Thompson told him all the things about the bike, he was so moved that he hugged Alex tightly. “Thanks for taking care of my mom and this bike,” James said with a smile on his face, patting the seat of the bike, “and it belongs to you forever.” Seeing what had happened, Alex felt a surge of gratitude, not just for the bike, but for the way a single act of kindness had turned his world from gray to gleaming. He also realized kindness was like a wheel — it kept going, turning small acts into big warmth.

【答案】 In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight. The water had already seeped into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung tightly to her parents’hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity, the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all huddled together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
Suddenly, a bunch of searching light from a rescue boat flashed across Mrs. Thomson’s window. “Look!” Mary exclaimed, pointing excitedly. Dad grabbed the flashlight and waved it back and forth, signaling for help. Within minutes, they heard the sound of voices and the gentle lapping of the boat against the building. The rescue team arrived just in time, helping them all into the boat and to safety. As they sailed away from the flooded apartment, Mary looked back, feeling grateful for the bravery and love that had kept them together through the storm.

【答案】 Jack and Tom hurried towards the barn, hoping it would be their ticket to shelter for the night. The wind, howling loudly, pushed them forward. Jack, being the taller one, boosted Tom up to the small window. Tom scrambled through, landing clumsily inside. Then, he reached out to help Jack in. Inside, the barn was musty but dry. A stack of hay, invitingly soft, caught their attention. They quickly made a makeshift bed, arranging the hay neatly. Exhausted, they lay down, their eyes closing involuntary. The darkness of the barn, thick and quiet, soon relaxed them into a deep sleep.
The next morning, the mist had cleared, and the sun was shining brightly. The barn, now bathed in warm sunlight, looked different. The fresh air, carrying the sweet smell of grass, filled their nostrils. They got up, stretching their stiff bodies. After a quick check of their backpacks, they stepped out of the barn. The path ahead, clear and visible, seemed to welcome them. They retraced their steps carefully, following the tire marks. Finally, they saw the village in the distance. With renewed energy, they jogged towards it, excited to share their adventure with Mr. Pike and their classmates. It was their perseverance, wisdom and teamwork that had seen them through.

【答案】
However, Joseph couldn’t shake off the feeling that it was his responsibility to do the right thing. He tried to reason with the other workers, emphasizing that Vanessa had been so kind to them. Despite facing resistance and being called naive, Joseph stood firm. He knew that Vanessa had been through so much loss, and this treasure might be the last connection to her late husband. In the end, his unwavering moral stance started to influence the others. Slowly, they began to realize that taking the treasure secretly was indeed wrong.
Together, they carefully repacked the box and brought it to Vanessa, explaining their discovery. Tears welled up in Vanessa’s eyes as she opened the letter from her husband. The letter expressed his deep love and the hope that this treasure would ensure her future security. Vanessa was extremely grateful to the workers, especially Joseph. To show her appreciation, she decided to give each of them a small reward. From that day on, Vanessa and Joseph maintained a close relationship, and the story of their honesty and kindness spread in the neighborhood.

【答案】范文:
Paragraph 1:
A few minutes later they were back. They turned the lights down low, told me to relax on my bed. Next, they massaged me — first my back, then my legs and arms. My body was sinking into the bed, and I felt totally at peace. They slowly massaged my feet and neck. I felt truly loved. All the anxiety of the day disappeared. “This is what you do for us every night, Mommy. Tonight’s your turn,” they said affectionately. Were those really the same children I had spent the day with?
Paragraph 2:
Just when I thought the massage (按摩) was over, they took turns brushing my hair. I was in heaven. What did I do to deserve this? I felt more relaxed than I had in a long time. As I thought it over, I realized that rather than scream for quiet that I expected better behavior, I had simply taken a moment to share my need with my children. I had asked for some special nurturing, and thankfully, they were loving enough to give it. “Thank you, my darlings. I love you both so much,” I whispered. “Tonight, you didn’t just give me a massage — you taught me how powerful love can be.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
She asked Mr. Carter for permission and began by taking on small tasks. Organizing scripts, preparing playlists and setting the facilities, Mary threw herself into these tasks, treating each one as an opportunity to learn. During breaks, she observed Olivia’s hosting techniques—how she handled technical issues and managed to make the audience feel excited and engaged. When no one was around, she would practice, pretending to host her own show, announcing imaginary school news, reciting poems, or introducing songs, just like Olivia did. As days turned into weeks, her notebook was filled with her thoughts and reflections. Mary felt more confident, and she hoped she could finally share her voice with the school.
Then one day, Mr. Carter rushed in with unexpected news: Olivia had suddenly fallen ill. Mary stood up, her palms sweating but voice steady. “I’ve learned a lot these days. May I try?” The studio fell silent. Mr. Carter studied her determined face and nodded. Holding the cold mic tightly, Mary’s clear voice flowed through speakers. She perfectly reported the news that day, played up beat music, and even shared fun stories about their school’s history. Students paused their sandwiches, recognizing the new voice. By broadcast end, the radio office buzzed with approval. Mr. Carter smiled, “Seems we already have our second host.” Mary was still holding the mic, which wasn’t cold anymore, but held the warmth of every host who’d ever panicked, triumphed, and grown here—including her.

【答案】 He adjusted his crooked gold-painted glasses and smiled. “Hi, Moon Rabbit!” he said happily, holding up a bag of baby carrots, “I’m a lost space carrot!” Something in his playful tone dissolved Lily’s shame. Lily froze, then giggled. Their laughter broke the tension. Soon, Lily and Hugo were racing around the playground, inventing silly rules for a game called “Carrot Chase.” By the second round, a girl wearing a dinosaur hoodie from the day before joined in. Then a boy wrapped a towel around his shoulders like a cape and joined in.
More and more kids followed, joining the running. The girl who’d mocked Lily’s glasses now wore her sweater backward as “robot armor,” shouting, “GO!” A boy draped napkins over his arms like bat wings, declaring himself the “Cabbage Bat.” Lily glanced at her reflection in her silver sunglasses—no longer a lonely moon rabbit, but the captain of a joy-filled universe. At that moment, Lily understood: courage wasn’t a lack of fear, but the choice to spark joy even when your ears droop.

I am sure you will be able to buy your favourite doll very soon.”
The following Monday, Amy went to her new school. As soon as she reached the school gate, she noticed a group of girls standing there. Amy had never imagined that and she had tears running down her cheeks.

【答案】Alex remembered the survival skills he had learned in the survival classes. He quickly gathered fallen branches and dry leaves to create a small fire. Using the flint, he struck it against a rock until a spark ignited the tinder. The flickering light illuminated the darkness, giving Jake some sense of comfort. Alex then led Jake to a safe spot where they could wait for the rescue team. The boys talked quietly, sharing stories and jokes to keep their spirits up. Alex told Jake that no one was better than anyone else, just different, and that being kind to others was more important than being clever.
Alex looked at Jake, surprised but touched by the sincerity in his voice. He had never seen Jake so vulnerable or humble. Jake thanked Alex for finding him and apologized for his past bullying. He promised to be a better friend from now on. Alex nodded, accepting the apology with a smile. As the night deepened, the boys heard the distant sound of rescue helicopters.

【答案】Then, he bought a small cage and kept Lucky in it. In the beginning, Lucky seemed fine inside it. He believed he had made the right choice to keep Lucky close and secure. However, as time passed, things took a turn for the worse. After a fully recovery, Lucky wanted to spread its wings and fly in the sky. When all its attempts failed, what Lucky could do was sitting inside the little cage and squawking sadly. Several days later, Lucky refused to eat and drink. Worried and confused, he didn’t know what to do about it.
Knowing the bad situation, Albert’s parents decided to help Lucky and their son. They told their son, “If you really love Lucky, you should think of how to make it happy.” After careful consideration, Albert opened both his heart and the cage. Lucky was released and flew away. Two weeks later, a wonderful thing happened: Lucky returned, flying around Albert and chirped happily, seeming to say thanks to him. This had happened from time to time since then. Instead of losing a forced friend, Albert had made a permanent one.

【答案】One possible version:
My attitudes towards the restaurant job began to change. I smiled to everyone I met, and they returned me with warmer smiles, which made me relaxed and even more concentrated on my job. Following the smiles were natural conversations, jokes and laughter, and an air of harmony was created where I worked. I still made some mistakes like forgetting the change or wrong deliveries, but they were easily corrected with a little kind reminding. I even tried helping out in the kitchen preparing the food. “You can be a good chef!” They encouraged me. Why not? Who knew!
On the last day of my contract, I went into Mr. Smith’s office again when I finished my job. I thanked him for giving me the job opportunity, especially for forgiving me when I caused chaos. My gratitude was sincere, for the experience not just greatly promoted my understanding of restaurant jobs, but was beneficial to anything else I would do. In return, Mr. Smith thanked me for my job performance, and paid me the salary that I needed for my camp trip. My father was right: I had to earn it by myself, because what I gained was a lot more.

【答案】We were led to the room where the abandoned cat lived. I tiptoed into the room with a strong feeling of anticipation. Out of nowhere, I heard a familiar meow, which absorbed my prompt attention suddenly. My eyes zeroed in on a little cat caged in the corner. She was skinnier than I remember, but it was my Baby-Girl all right! Overwhelmed with extreme excitement and delight, I opened the cage door. Baby-Girl practically jumped into my arms. I held her close, with my eye swelling up tears, as my Dad looked on, his jaw dropping wide with shock.
Soon after, my shocked Dad drove us back home. The instant we dropped Baby-Girl off, freeing her from the carrier, she immediately dashed to the hearth, seeking her favourite spot. On seeing this scene, we all roared with laughter, signaling that my Dad’s doubts were removed as well. Against all odds, my cat was home again, right before Christmas. It was such a miracle that my heart was filled with gratitude, feeling blessed with Baby-Girl’s long-awaited companion. As for my dear father who always support me, it turned out that Baby-Girl’s return made him a man of a believer.

4. However, finding it wasn’t so easy.

8. In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight.
9. Jack and Tom hurried towards the barn, hoping it would be their ticket to shelter for the night.

13. He adjusted his crooked gold-painted glasses and smiled.
14. With each passing day, Amy adapted better to her new life on campus. Amy was happy every day. After school every day, she told her parents what happened at school. Amy's mother cooked a lot of delicious food for them every time, so they became closer and closer. However, not everything was smooth sailing—Emily’s mother fell seriously ill one day. After hearing the news, Emily was very unhappy. Amy found that her good friend was sad, so she asked Emily what happened to her. Emily told Amy the news that her mother was seriously ill, and then Amy also fell into deep grief. When she got home, she told her parents about it. Her parents comforted Amy and helped Emily's mother find a good doctor. Several months later, Emily's mother recovered and the two friends were happy together every day.
15. Weeks later, Jacob received a letter in the mail. It was an invitation to a ceremony at the town hall, where he was to be honored for his bravery. Jacob couldn’t believe it; he had only done what he felt was right. On the day of the ceremony, he put on his best clothes and made his way to the hall, feeling both nervous and excited. His family and friends were there to support him, their faces beaming with pride.
Jacob stood proudly in front of his community, receiving the award for bravery. The mayor handed him a medal, and the audience erupted in applause. “Jacob showed us what true courage looks like,” the mayor said. “In the face of danger, he acted selflessly and saved a life.” Jacob’s heart swelled with pride and humility. He realized that bravery isn’t just about grand gestures but about doing what’s right, even when it’s scary. This experience solidified his dream of becoming a firefighter.
16.Alex remembered the survival skills he had learned in the survival classes.
They cheered and waved their arms, signaling their location. As they were reunited with their classmates and teachers, Alex felt a sense of accomplishment washing over him. He had not only survived the ordeal, but he had also helped someone in need, and in doing so, had gained a true friend.
17.Then, he bought a small cage and kept Lucky in it.

20.We were led to the room where the abandoned cat lived.
