Unit 6 Electricity everywhere
Section 4 Focusing on culture & Cross-curricular connection (提高篇)
一、阅读理解
The Sun provides sunshine for plants, animals, and people on Earth. Energy from the Sun is called solar energy. It comes in the form of light or heat. Solar energy makes you feel warm. People have used solar energy for many years. Houses were built with windows so that sunlight can get inside and provide heat. Solar energy can also be used to heat water and even food.
We can also turn the Sun's light into electricity. This is done with solar panels. Solar panels are made up of silicon(硅). When the sunlight reaches the solar panel, the electrons(电子) in the silicon move and flow through wires in the solar panel. Using this technology, we can run even cars.
But what happens when clouds block the solar panels? The electrons in the silicon will stop moving. But this doesn't mean that solar energy can only be used on bright sunny days. Solar panels can have batteries to store electricity for a rainy day. When the Sun is shining, the electricity flows from the solar panel into the batteries. The stored electricity can be used at night or on cloudy days.
Solar energy is not as expensive as before. The Sun produces more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time. Just imagine what we could do if we used solar energy to power our Earth.

二、阅读与表达
A 15- year- old boy named Hussam Attar made electricity to light up his family's tent(帐篷). When Gaza(加沙) got into a war, he and his family moved from their house to the tent to hide from the heavy bombing(轰炸).
How did Attar light up the small tent? Well, he first found two fans(风扇), and then climbed onto the roof of a house near his tent and set up the fans. He connected them to some batteries. When the wind blew through the fans, the batteries were charged.Next, he connected the batteries to wires running down through the house and used bulbs and a piece of wood to make lights for his family.
Because of his talent, people in the tent camp called him“Gaza's Newton”.
“Newton was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head. And we here are living in this dark and terrible place, and rockets are falling on us, so I thought of making light, and I succeeded,” Attar said.
He never gives up his hopes when this is probably the most difficult time in his life.“I am happy that people in this camp call me‘Gaza’ s Newton’ because I want to become a scientist and invent things that will benefit(使······受益) not only the people of Gaza but the whole world,” he added.
1. Why did Hussam and his family have to move to a tent?
2. Where did Hussam set up the two fans to collect wind?
3. What did Hussam want to be?
4. Why do you think people compared Hussam to Newton? What do they have in common?
Write 30 words or more.
