Less Crowds, More Beauty
The Grand Canyon welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2024. But there is somewhere equally breathtaking with far fewer crowds. It’s called Coconino National Forest, stretching across nearly 2 million acres between Phoenix and Flagstaff.
How to Get There
Getting there is easy. Fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and drive 1.5 hours north via Interstate 17. Or fly to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport, served by American Airlines with daily flights from Phoenix, Dallas, and Los Angeles. From there, the forest is just a 20-minute drive.
About the Forest
Named after the Cohonina people, the forest was designated a national forest by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908. Today, its three districts protect 10 wilderness areas home to elk, mule deer, mountain lions, and bobcats.
Hiking Information
Trails: 482 trails extending hundreds of miles
Pass Required:
1. Red Rock Pass: $5 per day (for individuals only)
2. All-Inclusive Annual Pass: $80 (for individuals and families)
Top Trails:
Devil’s Bridge Trail: 3.9-mile out-and-back hike to a huge sandstone arch.
Kachina Peaks Trail: 9.6-mile hike to Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), Arizona’s highest point. Grand Canyon view available on clear days from Humphreys Peak.
Stay Options
The forest has 24 campsites and 4 cabins. Clints Well Campground charges $8 per night and stays open year-round. If you prefer a roof, hotels in Flagstaff or Sedona Views Bed and Breakfast (11.2 miles away) are good choices.

根据第一段中“The Grand Canyon welcomed 4.9 million visitors in 2024. But there is somewhere equally breathtaking with far fewer crowds. It’s called Coconino National Forest.(大峡谷在2024年迎来了490万游客。但有一个同样令人叹为观止且人少得多的地方。它叫科科尼诺国家森林。)”可知,文章主要目的是介绍这个人少的景点。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。 根据Pass Required中“Red Rock Pass: $5 per day(for individuals only)(红石通行证:每天5美元,仅限个人)”和“All-Inclusive Annual Pass: $80 (for individuals and families)(全包年票:80美元,适用于个人和家庭)”可知,四口之家徒步3天:若买红石通行证,需4人×3天=12张,共12×5=60美元;若买全包年票需80美元。

At 39, Zhang Xue doesn’t care much about fame. Dressed in his own brand’s biker jacket, he told reporters, “None of you would be here if someone hadn’t pushed for you to be here.” His words made many uncomfortable. Yet just days earlier, his motorcycle had made history — winning two World Supersport races in Portugal, beating giants like Ducati and Honda.
Zhang’s journey was never easy. Born into a poor farming family, at 16, it was by chance that he became passionate about motorcycles. “I’ve ridden every day since then,” he says. But being a self-taught rider with no connections meant no racing team would notice him. So at 19, he did something clever: he repeatedly called a popular TV show until a journalist agreed to meet him. His first performance was a disaster. Due to extreme nerves, his old motorcycle, or the lack of grip (抓牢) in the mountainous terrain, he fell off several times. The staff drove away. Refusing to give up, Zhang chased (追逐) their car for over 100 km in the rain for three hours. Moved by his persistence, they filmed him again. This time, he nailed difficult stunts. The broadcast, titled The Wind-Chasing Youth, got him noticed by professional teams.
After years of racing and engineering work, Zhang moved to Chongqing, China’s “Motorcycle Capital”. With only 20, 000 yuan, he started by buying spare parts and sharing his work online. In 2017, he co-founded Kove Moto, which soon became a leader in large-displacement motorcycles. But fame and fortune meant little to him. “I don’t want to be a businessman sitting in meetings,” he says. “I want to be a hands-on engineer again.” So in 2024, he left to start his own brand, ZXMOTO.
Today, ZXMOTO is growing fast. “Our advantages are low costs and high efficiency. In terms of high-end manufacturing, we are neck and neck with Europe and the US,” he says. Zhang’s ultimate dream is to put a Chinese motorcycle on the top step of MotoGP, the “Formula 1 of two wheels”. “WSBK is just the beginning,” he says. “I won’t stop until a Chinese bike stands on a MotoGP podium.”
4. What did the chase after the TV staff reflect about Zhang?
A. His physical fitness.
B. His determination to follow a dream.
C. His persistence in business.
D. His super skills in motorcycle riding.
5. Why did Zhang leave Kove Moto?
A. The company was losing money.
B. His investors asked him to leave.
C. He wanted full control of production.
D. He preferred engineering to management.
6. What can be inferred from Zhang’s view on Chinese manufacturing?
A. It will never catch up with Europe.
B. It lacks experience in high-end areas.
C. It still depends too much on low costs.
D. It has closed the gap with developed nations.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The history of a famous racing event in Portugal.
B. Why Chinese motorcycles now lead the global market.
C. How a self-taught mechanic defeated industrial giants.
D. The business competition between Kove and ZXMOTO.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据第二段中“Born into a poor farming family, at 16, it was by chance that he became passionate about motorcycles. Moved by his persistence, they filmed him again.(出身贫寒农家的他,16岁时因一次偶然的机会迷上了摩托车。
根据第三段中“I don’t want to be a businessman sitting in meetings,” he says. “I want to be a hands-on engineer again.” So in 2024, he left to start his own brand, ZXMOTO.(“我不想当个坐在会议室里的商人,”他说,“我想重新做回一名实操工程师。”
根据第四段中“In terms of high-end manufacturing, we are neck and neck with Europe and the US(在高端制造方面,我们与欧美并驾齐驱)”可知,张雪认为中国在高端制造领域已与欧美不相上下,说明差距已大幅缩小。
C选项“How a self-taught mechanic defeated industrial giants.(一个自学成才的机械师如何击败工业巨头。)”
C
Birds do it. Bees do it. Even animals without central nervous systems do it. And of course babies do it — yet less than their exhausted parents would like.
But, despite its universality, sleep remains a mysterious process. Indeed, although sleep seems to be crucial for physical and mental well-being, scientists are still trying to work out its biological logic. Research points to a theory, which suggests that the brain needs to “reset” periodically to keep the mind in good operating order — with exciting hints that sleep’s effect on the gut (肠道) might also come into play.
Not only is getting enough sleep satisfying in its own right, but it also has a broader effect on health. Evidence indicates that people who sleep less than six hours per night are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than people who sleep longer. A theory first proposed more than ten years ago holds that sleep helps the brain to clear out tau protein, which contributes to this neurodegenerative (神经退行) condition. But in the past years, a fierce scientific debate has arisen about the physiological (生理的) details of this connection. The resulting uncertainty has made it more difficult to take advantage of the correlation between sleep and Alzheimer’s to develop strategies to prevent the happening of this disastrous condition.
Sleep can also help to address a less-severe and more-common health issue than dementia (痴呆): the desire to lose weight. A leading sleep specialist explains how longer sleep leads to people consuming fewer calories and losing kilograms. And weight loss lowers the risk of sleep apnoea, in which a person’s breathing during sleep is interrupted, and, in turn, lessens the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.
Sleep scientists have no shortage of questions to explore. These include the link between night-time illumination (照明) and mood disorders, the disappointing finding that napping might increase the risk of heart disease and the confirmation that early morning university classes discourage attendance and reduce learning.
8. What is the primary purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To highlight the widespread nature of sleep.
B. To explain why babies sleep less than adults.
C. To introduce the biological definition of sleep.
D. To compare the sleep habits of different species.
9. Why is it hard to develop Alzheimer’s prevention strategies based on sleep research?
A. Proteins harm sleep indirectly.
B. Short sleep prevents Alzheimer’s.
C. No debate is over their connection.
D. The sleep-Alzheimer’s link is unclear.
10. What can be inferred according to the last paragraph?
A. Mood disorders directly lead to heart disease.
B. Early morning classes are effective for weight loss.
C. Some common habits carry unexpected health risks.
D. Night-time illumination is beneficial for mental health.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Babies Need More Sleep
B. Where Napping Benefits Our Body
C. What Scientists Learn about Sleep
D. How to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease
A 9. D 10. C 11. C
根据第一段中“Birds do it. Bees do it. Even animals without central nervous systems do it. And of course babies do it(鸟会睡觉,蜜蜂会睡觉,甚至没有中枢神经系统的动物也会睡觉。当然婴儿也会睡觉)”可知,第一段通过列举鸟、蜜蜂、无中枢神经的动物、婴儿等不同物种都会睡觉,目的是说明睡眠是一种普遍现象。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But in the past years, a fierce scientific debate has arisen about the physiological (生理的) details of this connection. The resulting uncertainty has made it more difficult to take advantage of the correlation between sleep and Alzheimer’s to develop strategies to prevent the happening of this disastrous condition.(但在过去几年里,关于这种关联背后的生理学机制,科学界展开了一场激烈的争论。由此产生的不确定性,使得我们更难利用睡眠与阿尔茨海默病之间的相关性,去制定预防这种毁灭性疾病发生的策略。)”可知,由于睡眠与阿尔茨海默病之间的生理联系尚存争议、不够明确,导致难以据此开发预防策略。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“These include the link between night-time illumination (照明) and mood disorders, the disappointing finding that napping might increase the risk of heart disease and the confirmation that early morning university classes discourage attendance and reduce learning.(其中包括夜间照明与情绪障碍之间的关联、午睡反而可能增加心脏病风险的令人沮丧的发现,以及证实大学过早的早课会打击出勤率并影响学习效果的那些研究。)”
C选项“What Scientists Learn about Sleep(科学家对睡眠的了解)”最能概括全文主旨。
D
Why do we cry happy tears? Tears are usually seen as a sign of sadness, but people often cry during joyful moments like weddings, births and reunions. These “happy tears” seem contradictory, yet they show how the human brain deals with intense emotion.
Crying is a biological response to emotional overload, making no difference between positive and negative feelings. Strong emotions activate the brain’s feeling-related system. The amygdala (杏仁体) works as an emotional alarm bell to sense excitement and send signals to the body. It further activates the hypothalamus, which controls involuntary actions such as heartbeat and tear production. The anterior cingulate cortex (前扣带脑皮质) helps manage mixed emotions, explaining why great joy can cause reactions connected with sadness.
Scientists regard happy crying as emotional homeostasis. It helps people return to calmness after extreme excitement. Crying relaxes the body by slowing heart rates and easing tension after adrenaline (肾上腺素) rises. It balances opposite feelings — relief from fear, gratitude after hardship, and pride from struggle.
In fact, happy tears seldom come from pure joy. They arise from mixed feelings, known as a double-balance response. When people feel joyful, the brain will recall past memories of loss or struggle, making them emotional.
Humans are the only animals that cry out of emotion. This ability developed as a silent way of communication. Happy tears show sincerity, build social bonds, bring empathy and shared emotional relief. Above all, they prove human emotions are complex, rich and meaningful.
12. What can we learn about crying from paragraph 2?
A. The amygdala controls our heart rate and tears.
B. Brain structures produce emotional tears jointly.
C. Happy feelings cannot activate the brain system.
D. Tears only appear when people feel sad and painful.
13. What does the underlined word “homeostasis” most probably mean?
A. internal balance.
B. sudden excitement.
C. psychological control.
D. physical weakness.
14. How does emotional crying function in humans?
A. It helps strengthen social connections.
B. It shows joy rather than mixed feelings.
C. It frees people from negative memories.
D. It results from empathy and shared relief.
15. What is the purpose of the whole passage?
A. To argue crying builds social bonds.
B. To illustrate why joy can cause crying.
C. To compare happy tears and sad tears.
D. To describe how the brain controls tears.
B 13. A 14. A 15. B
根据第二段中的“Strong emotions activate the brain’s feeling-related system. (强烈的情绪会激活大脑的情感相关系统。杏仁体如同情绪警报器,感知情绪并向身体发送信号,进而激活下丘脑,下丘脑控制心跳、流泪等无意识行为。前扣带脑皮质负责处理复杂情绪,这也解释了为何极度喜悦会引发类似悲伤的反应。)”可知,大脑多个结构共同作用,催生情绪性流泪。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段划线单词后的“It helps people return to calmness after extreme excitement. Crying relaxes the body by slowing heart rates and easing tension after adrenaline (肾上腺素) rises. It balances opposite feelings — relief from fear, gratitude after hardship, and pride from struggle. (它能帮助人们在极度激动后恢复平静。肾上腺素飙升时,哭泣会减缓心率、舒缓紧绷感,让身体放松。它还能调和对立情绪:恐惧消散后的释然、历经艰辛后的感恩、奋力拼搏后的自豪。)”可知,流泪可以调节情绪、维持身心的内在平衡,由此推断,划线单词意为“内在平衡”。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Happy tears show sincerity, build social bonds, bring empathy and shared emotional relief. (喜悦的泪水彰显真诚,建立社交联结,带来共情与共同的情绪舒缓。)”可知,情绪性流泪有助于加强人际社交联系。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的“Why do we cry happy tears? Tears are usually seen as a sign of sadness, but people often cry during joyful moments like weddings, births and reunions. These “happy tears” seem contradictory, yet they show how the human brain deals with intense emotion. (我们为什么会流下喜悦的泪水?泪水通常被看作悲伤的标志,但人们常在婚礼、新生命降临、久别重逢等欢乐时刻落泪。这类喜悦的泪水看似矛盾,却体现出大脑处理强烈情绪的方式。)”可知,全文围绕喜悦为何会使人落泪展开论述,写作目的就是解释这一现象。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使其构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, Mike and his mom Rose reached his grandma Alondra’s house for lunch. During it, they talked about the school’s approaching prom (舞会). Alondra said, “When I was young, I failed to attend the school’s prom for some reason!”
Rose could see that Alondra had dreamed about attending a prom. After returning home, Rose encouraged Mike to ask his grandma to be his dance partner. She wanted to help Alondra to realize her dream. She knew Alondra was outgoing and loved to stay with young kids.
Mike initially hesitated but finally decided to follow his mother’s suggestion. His good friend Lily supported his decision, too. The next day, Mike sent the invitation to his grandma. Seeing it, Alondra was surprised and excited.
When that big night came, Alondra wore a beautiful dress. When they joyfully walked into the hall of the prom, unexpectedly, there was a loud gasp (倒吸气). Mike could feel all eyes on him. “Wait! Did he bring his old grandmother as his dance partner?” some kids behind them laughed. Mike looked around, finding that every boy had a young girl as their partner.
Upset and embarrassed, he whispered, “I’m sorry, Gran. Don’t hate me for this.” Without a second thought, he left his grandmother behind and walked out of the hall, vowing not to return to the prom.
Poor Alondra was left alone in the hall. She had never imagined she’d be alone in a hall full of young children. But it happened. Mike just walked out of the hall and sat on the basketball court stairs, thinking about how terrible it was to bring Alondra along. Suddenly, a familiar voice from behind distracted his racing thoughts.
“Your grandmother needs you,” it said. “It was very rude of you to leave her alone!”
Mike turned around to see Lily approaching him.
注意:
1.续写词数应为120左右;

“Mike, do you know what it feels like for your grandmother to stand alone there?” Lily said. Her eyes filled with disappointment, she told him that Alondra had spent days preparing for the prom, cherishing this long-awaited dream. Realizing his selfishness, Mike lowered his head and his face turned red with shame. He rushed back to the hall immediately and found Alondra. She stood there quietly, trying to hold back her tears. Mike took her hands sincerely and apologized repeatedly. Alondra smiled gently and forgave him. Then, they stepped onto the dance floor. Ignoring the stares, they danced happily, making Alondra’s prom dream finally come true.

13. What does the underlined word “homeostasis” most probably mean?
A. internal balance.
B. sudden excitement.

D. physical weakness.

注意:
1.续写词数应为120左右;
