Several years ago, Dawn Larkin-Wallace, a mom of three, started running to lose 10 pounds to 20 pounds of baby weight that just wouldn’t go away. She thought once she dropped the weight, she’d be off the treadmill (跑步机). What she could have never imagined is that she’d become a marathon runner who inspired her three children to start running, too.
“We’re just a running family,” said Larkin-Wallace of Baldwin, New York, who is part of a running club. First, Larkin-Wallace signed up her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, a high school student, for a race after realizing that the amount of running she did during her soccer games was the equivalent (等量) of five kilometers.
With the positive pressure and the competitive spirit that exists in the household, Larkin-Wallace said with a laugh, “Of course, her brother and sister decided that that’s something they wanted to do, too.” Kimberly, 11, and Kevin Jr., 9, ran their first 5K’s this year.
Larkin-Wallace said her goal is for healthy living to become a lifestyle among her kids, who also play a range of sports from basketball to soccer. What she’s also very mindful of is encouraging her children, especially her girls, to feel good about their bodies. A recent study found that two in three 13-year-olds worry about gaining weight.
“It’s always on my mind, and I have to help my daughters understand that their body type is disparate from others and that the difference doesn’t make one better or more right than the other,” she said during a conversation with her family in their home. “As long as we’re healthy and taking care of ourselves, we should accept ourselves.”
The best advice for teenagers, Larkin-Wallace said, is to focus less on appearance and more on health, internal (内在的) qualities and things that your body can do, rather than how your body appears.
4. Why did Larkin-Wallace start running several years ago?
A. To lose weight after having babies. B. To prepare for a marathon race.
C. To set an example to her friends. D. To join a national running club.
5. What is the underline word “disparate” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. humble B. different C. separated D. dynamic
6. What did Larkin-Wallace encourage her kids to do?
A. Break their bad habits at home. B. Win honors as much as possible.
C. Accept their bodies as they are. D. Compare their bodies with others.
7. What is Larkin-Wallace’s suggestion for teenagers?
A. Put health above looks. B. Keep a balanced lifestyle.
C. Focus on their appearance. D. Create a caring environment.

A new study has found evidence that horses can smell fear in humans’ sweat and that it causes them to feel the same emotion. People have believed for many years that horses can “smell fear,” and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horse calm. Past studies have found that horses pick up human emotions from our facial expressions and voices. Recently, a team of researchers set out to see if horses can discover people’s emotions from smell alone.
In the study, 30 people were asked to watch video clips of happy scenes while cotton pads (棉片) under their arms collected their sweat. Then, with new pads under their arms, they watched a scary film.
The researchers then divided 43 horses into three groups. The animals wore devices called muzzles (鼻罩) that fit over their nose and mouth. One group was given a muzzle with a pad of happy sweat in it, one group received a pad from the scared people, and the third group had a clean, untouched pad.
The team tested the horses to see how they reacted to unexpected events, such as an umbrella being opened near them or an unfamiliar object being placed in front of them. Horses that wore the “fear” muzzle acted more scared. Their hearts beat faster, they were more likely to be surprised, and they were less likely to be curious about the new object or approach humans.
“The fearful smells from humans make the horses’ reactions stronger,” lead study author Plotine Jardat told CNN. “The significance is that horses can smell how we feel, even if they can’t hear or see us.”
The researchers hope that understanding horses’ emotions better can help people interact more positively with the animals and improve horse health and happiness. Stressed or scared horses often react with behavior that can be dangerous, such as kicking or running away, so knowing the importance of remaining calm can also keep humans safer around these sensitive creatures.
8. How did researchers collect human sweat in the study?
A. By letting people watch videos. B. By asking people to exercise hard.
C. By letting people stay relaxed. D. By asking people to touch horses.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Happy sweat calmed horses down. B. Scary sweat made horses more fearful.
C. Untouched pads raised horses’ curiosity. D. Clean pads surprised horses easily.
10. What is the significance of the study?
A. It helps humans control horses’ emotions freely. B. It helps train horses to avoid dangerous behaviors.
C. It helps horses get used to unfamiliar circumstances. D. It helps promote positive human-horse interaction.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Horses are sensitive to sounds. B. Horses are emotional creatures.
C. Horses can smell a person’s fear. D. Horses behave in different ways.
D
Forests worldwide are increasingly ruled by fast-growing trees, while slow-growing, long-lived species are disappearing. This shift may help the wood industry and forest recovery after fires, but it makes forests more easily harmed by climate change and extreme weather events.
In a global analysis of over 31,000 tree species, scientists at Aarhus University mapped where fast-growth features are taking over. Using those maps, Svenning, a researcher of the study, showed slow, specialized trees losing ground to fast generalist species. In tropical and subtropical regions, Svenning flagged many small-range trees as most likely to disappear as disturbances increase. Once fast growers dominate a stand, storms, drought, and pests can knock larger parts of that forest down at once.
Logging (采伐), road building, and stronger fires leave open, sunny gaps where fast-growing trees take over quickly. Lighter leaves and softer wood let these trees grow fast, even when drought or heat makes water scarce. Low wood density (密度), how heavy wood is for its size, also makes trunks easier to break and dry out. Over decades, stands packed with light-wood trees can snap or dry faster, making die-offs more likely during extreme years.
Long-lived trees grow slowly, yet their deep roots and strong trunks hold a forest together when weather turns tough. Denser wood and tougher leaves help them resist drought and pests, and a recent report tied that durability (持久性) to climate protection.
Because slow-growing trees take decades to mature, today’s choices can lock in either stability or fragility (脆弱) for a long time. Overall, forests seem set to grow quicker while losing the slow trees that keep ecosystems steady and diverse. Future planning can treat those slow species as essential components, and it can test which restoration mixes hold up under extremes.
12. What does the study reveal?
A. Forests are becoming more diverse worldwide. B. Slow-growing trees are taking over forests.
C. Fast-growing trees are disappearing rapidly. D. Fast-growing trees are replacing slow ones.
13. What makes fast-growing trees quickly take up sunny gaps?
A. Inner structures. B. Rich resources.
C. Human actions. D. Constant disruptions.
14. What advantage do long-lived trees have over fast-growing ones?
A. They help maintain forests’ stability. B. They recover quickly after wildfires.
C. They grow faster in tough conditions. D. They provide better wood for industry.
15. What is the author’s attitude to protecting slow-growing trees?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Angry. D. Supportive.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since I stepped into Senior Two, life has been a non-stop cycle of homework, exams and fierce competition. Buried under piles of papers and burning the midnight oil almost every night, I kept telling myself that I must work harder to realize my dream of entering a top university. I tried every method known: making detailed timetables, reciting vocabulary till midnight, and redoing wrong questions. However, despite my persistent efforts, the results were far from satisfactory.
Time and time again, I received disappointing test scores. The red marks on the paper were like sharp knives, piercing my heart and making me feel completely defeated. One Friday afternoon, after getting yet another discouraging school report, I locked myself in my room. Tears rolled down my cheeks uncontrollably as I stared at the low grades. I began to doubt my own ability, wondering if I was actually smart enough to make it. “Maybe I should just give up,” I whispered to myself, feeling exhausted and hopeless.
Just when I was drowning in self-pity, my deskmate, Li Hua, noticed my absence from the classroom. He tracked me down at home and knocked gently on my door. When I finally opened it, with red and swollen eyes, he didn’t say a word of blame. Instead, he handed me a cup of hot milk and sat beside me quietly. After letting me calm down for a moment, he shared his own struggle with math, admitting that he had also wanted to quit many times. Then, looking me straight in the eyes, he said softly but firmly:
“The process is more important than the result. Keep going, and you will see the change sooner or later.” These simple yet powerful words were like a ray of sunshine, breaking through the dark clouds of my mind. They touched my heart deeply and pulled me out of the abyss of negativity. I took a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and silently made up my mind to hold on to my dream.

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Angry. D. Supportive.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. A 15. D

The Student Union
【答案】Dear fellow students,
A green campus is far more than a pleasant learning environment — it’s a living classroom where we nurture environmental awareness and sense of responsibility. Protecting our campus environment is vital for sustainable development and sets a positive example for the wider community.
Yet, we often witness wasteful behaviors: lights and air-conditioners run in empty classrooms, and plastic bottles litter the corridors. To reverse this, let’s form small but impactful habits: switch off devices when leaving, carry reusable water bottles, and sort waste properly.
Every small effort counts. Let’s join the Campus Green Initiative and work together to turn our campus into an eco-friendly haven!

Paragraph 2

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I made a detailed study plan and started to change my learning methods. Instead of blindly reciting and redoing questions, I began to analyze my mistakes carefully, noting down the reasons and summarizing key knowledge points. I asked teachers for help whenever I encountered difficulties, and Li Hua and I studied together after class, discussing problems and sharing learning skills. I also adjusted my schedule, ensuring enough rest to avoid burnout. Every day, I stuck to the plan firmly, step by step, no longer anxious about the results but focusing on every small progress.
With my continuous efforts, I finally made significant progress. In the next exam, my scores improved greatly, and the red marks on the paper were no longer sharp knives but a reminder of my hard work. When I saw the report, a big smile appeared on my face, and tears of joy rolled down. I told Li Hua the good news immediately, and he was as happy as I was. I realized that persistence and correct methods are the keys to success. From then on, I became more confident, knowing that as long as I keep going, I will eventually realize my dream.
