I’m right. You’re wrong! Isn’t this how we argue? Seeing things from another person’s point of view can be difficult. That’s why we often argue with others. But what if there is a way to change this? Science has the answer to our problems!
Scientists have found that reflecting (反思) on your values (价值观) before arguing with someone makes you more open-minded and therefore less likely to get angry at the other person. “By doing this you increase your openness to being wrong.” reported the Science website.
Paul Hanel, a sociologist (社会学家) at the University of Essex, U.K., did this study. To test this, 300 student volunteers were put into small groups to debate (辩论) some topics. Then half of the group were asked to think of their 19 most important values, such as freedom (自由) and acceptance (接纳) of those who are different. While the other half reflected on what drinks they like. Then they had debates again.
About 60 percent of the values group showed more openness than the drinks group. And 80 percent of the values group also showed more empathy (同理心).
So next time you want to argue with your friends or parents, try this simple method — reflecting on your values before arguing with them!
11. Why do we often argue with others?
A. Because it is hard to see things from others’ points of view.
B. Because we are more open-minded to being wrong than others.

Have you ever unlocked (开锁) a shared bike? Have you ever ordered a meal online? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short-form videos on the Internet? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.
Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 50 years ago, in 1973.
Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn’t think Motorola’s product was good enough. He didn’t like AT&T’s idea of a car phone (车载电话) either. The man had a new idea. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.
It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design the world’s first cell phone. The product was called Dyna TAC. People could talk on it for 25 minutes before its battery (电池) died. The phone’s short battery life wasn’t a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy (1,100 grams) to hold in hand for more than 25 minutes!
On 3 April, 1973, Cooper made the world’s first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, “I’m calling you on a cell phone. It’s a real, handheld cell phone.” On the other end of the line, there was only silence.
Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They’re much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 94, is surprised at the progress.
But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. “Keep learning all your life,” he says, “or you’ll lose the ability to learn — that would be terrible!”
18. Why does the author raise three questions in the first paragraph?
A. To list the usages of cell phones.
B. To show the importance of cell phones.
C. To do a survey about what people use their cell phones for.
19. What was the big problem Cooper needed to solve according to Paragraph 4?
A. The usages of the cell phone.
B. The battery life of the cell phone.
C. The weight of the cell phone.
20. What was Cooper’s new idea according to Paragraph 3?
A. Making a new car phone for AT&T.
B. Making a new car phone for Motorola.
C. Making a new phone for people to use anywhere.
21. Why did Engel keep silent when Cooper called him by using the cell phone?
A. Because Engel couldn’t hear clearly on the line.
B. Because Cooper invented the cell phone before AT&T could.
C. Because Cooper didn’t make the cell phone better.
【答案】18. B 19. C 20. C 21. B
【解析】

D
Summer in Japan can be difficult. Temperatures often go above 30℃, and it’s also very wet. Of course, many buildings have air conditioners (空调), but people do need to go outside sometimes. So how do Japanese people stay cool?
While some use traditional fans, these days it’s common to see people carrying small hand-held electric fans to keep themselves cool. One company has even made work jackets with electric fans inside to keep the wearer cool.
And now another Japanese company has created an air conditioner that you can just wear around your waist (腰). The “WearCool”, which was created by the company Gloture, is a belt that uses five small fans to blow cool air up the front and back of your body at up to 5 meters a second. The inside of the belt is also made of a material that absorbs (吸收) heat, so it’s comfortable to wear. The belt can be adjusted (调节) for different waist sizes too. And while Gloture’s pictures show models wearing the belt like a fashion accessory (配饰), you can actually wear it under your clothes.
WearCool comes with a powerful battery that lets it be used without stopping for up to 17 hours, the company says. And by using an app — which can be used in English or Japanese — you can adjust both the speed and the direction of the air flow.
WearCool is now available from Gloture’s online store and costs around $230. But will it become as popular as those hand-held electric fans?
22. How many ways to keep cool are mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four.
23. Which of the following is TRUE about WearCool?
A. It’s already on sale now.
B. It looks like a jacket.
C. It can be only worn under the clothes.
24. What is the writer’s attitude toward the popularity of WearCool?
A. Negative. B. Confident. C. Uncertain.
25. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. An air conditioner that looks like a belt
B. Different air conditioners in Japan
C. The fashion accessory for models
【答案】22. B 23. A 24. C 25. A
第二段中提到了三种保持凉爽的方式:traditional fans (传统扇子)、small hand-held electric fans (手持小电扇)、work jackets with electric fans (内置电扇的工作夹克),所以选项B“Three.”正确。
【23题详解】
最后一段中提到“WearCool is now available from Gloture’s online store”,说明它已经在售,选项A“It’s already on sale now.”正确。B“它看起来像一件夹克”与第三段“is a belt that uses five small fans...”矛盾;C“它只能穿在衣服里面”与第三段最后一句“you can actually wear it under your clothes”中的“actually”暗示也可以穿在外面,所以C不正确。
【24题详解】
文章结尾问道“But will it become as popular as those hand-held electric fans?”,作者没有给出肯定或否定的答案,而是提出了一个疑问,说明作者对WearCool能否像手持电扇一样受欢迎持不确定态度,选项C“Uncertain.”正确。
【25题详解】

13. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the method of reflecting on one’s values before arguing with others?

Tom lived in a poor village and he hated rats in his house. His mother had told him how rats brought disease wherever they went.
His father brought iron cages and placed them in each corner of their house. Tom’s mother made some biscuits which were broken into pieces and placed in each cage. However, not a single rat was caught in this way. Tom read somewhere that rats loved cheese but it was expensive in his country.
However, the rat problem in his house became worse day by day. Rats came and went at will in the house. One evening Tom was having dinner in his room. As Tom lifted his face to catch the breeze (微风), he saw a strange sight. A big, blackish brown rat jumped onto the windowsill (窗台) and dropped quickly into his room. Tom held his breath. The rat hid itself behind a sofa. Tom jumped onto his bed and shouted for his mother. His mother simply took a broom and reached behind the sofa. The rat jumped onto the sofa and from there onto the windowsill. Before Tom could say anything, the rat disappeared into the darkness outside the window.
A. Negative. B. Confident. C. Uncertain.
