In difficult times, art can bring hope and possibility to people’s lives. Colleen Wall is an artist. She creates beautiful murals (壁画) to help patients feel better. She wants to give them a “window view” and take them on an imaginary journey to a sunny place.
Colleen’s interest in art and healthcare began in 1995 when she had cancer (癌症). After she got better, she started to use art to help others who were also sick. One day, while working at a hospital, Colleen entered a patient’s room and said, “It’s such a beautiful day outside!” The patient replied, “It always looks the same from here.” This simple conversation touched Colleen deeply. It made her start a project called “A View for a Room”. She wanted to change hospital rooms by creating paintings that looked like windows to nature.
After raising enough money for her project, Colleen created 20 special paintings. The paintings include beautiful scenes of nature and roads to invite patients into the artwork. They also have encouraging words to lift the patients’ spirits.
Last November, Colleen began painting her murals on walls at the Roswell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York. “Spending a long time in a hospital can feel lonely,” said Colleen. “These window paintings can help patients feel as if they are not in a hospital room, but instead are enjoying nature in a sunny, peaceful place. It’s my way of sharing the hope that helped me through my own challenges.”
49. What does the underlined word “them” refer to (指的是)?
A. The murals. B. The patients. C. The hospitals. D. The artists.
50. When did Colleen’s interest in art and healthcare begin?
A. About 10 years ago. B. About 20 years ago. C. About 30 years ago. D. About 40 years ago.
51. Why did Colleen start the project “A View for a Room”?
A. Because a patient’s reply touched her deeply.
B. Because she hoped to make hospitals larger.
C. Because she needed to raise money for art.
D. Because the hospital ordered her to do so.
52. What can we infer (推断) about Colleen’s murals?
A. They can cure (治愈) patients' illnesses completely.
B. They help patients feel less lonely in hospitals.
C. They are only popular with young sick people.
D. They have nothing to do with nature or sunshine.
【答案】49. B 50. C 51. A 52. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述艺术家Colleen Wall用壁画装点医院病房,以此给病患带去希望、慰藉与美好的故事。
【49题详解】
第一段提到“She creates beautiful murals (壁画) to help patients feel better. She wants to give them a ‘window view’ and take them on an imaginary journey to a sunny place.”,前文提到科琳创作壁画是为了帮助病人改善心情,此处承接上文,表示她想给这些病人带来“窗外风景”,因此划线词them指代的是病人。
【50题详解】
第二段明确“Colleen’s interest in art and healthcare began in 1995”,结合时间推算,距今大约30年。
【51题详解】
第二段讲述一次简单对话深深触动了Colleen,于是她发起了“A View for a Room”这个项目。
【52题详解】
第四段“ ‘Spending a long time in a hospital can feel lonely’ ”Colleen表示长期住院会让人感到孤独,而这些壁画能让患者仿佛置身自然之中,由此可推断壁画能缓解患者的孤独感。
第二节 阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。

Every morning, a kind man carried two large clay pots on a wooden stick to get water from the river. One pot was perfect, with no cracks (裂缝) or holes, and it could carry a full bucket (桶) of water home every time. The other pot had a small crack on its side, and every time they walked back home, water would drop out little by little along the road. By the time they reached home, the cracked pot was always half empty.
The cracked pot felt very sad and useless. It often said bad things about itself for making the man work harder—he had to make two trips sometimes to get enough water. One day, when they were walking back from the river, the cracked pot could not hold back its sadness and said to the man, “I’m so sorry, master. I’m useless because of my crack. I always lose half of the water, and you have to work more because of me.”
The man smiled gently, and said, “My dear pot, don’t be sad. Did you notice the beautiful flowers on your side of the road? I planted flower seeds there a long time ago. Every day, the water you dropped out helped the seeds grow into beautiful flowers. Without your crack, those flowers would never bloom. You are not useless—you have your own special value.”
The cracked pot suddenly realized that its weakness was actually a gift. No one in the world is perfect. Everyone has their own weaknesses, but those weaknesses can sometimes become our best points.
53. Why did the cracked pot feel sad? (不超过15个词)

54. What did the water from the cracked pot help do? (不超过15个词)

F
