M: Well, it was 1962 and I was a struggling, not very successful artist in new York. My wife suggested that I try my hand at painting for children’s books, so I did ten paintings and took them to publishers. I was turned down everywhere except at one publisher, where a young woman told me I wasn't very good. So if I wanted to paint for a book, I’d need to write one on my own. W: So you did. M: Um, the woman pointed to a painting I’d done of a little girl with a big red dog, and she said, maybe that’s a story. And I went home. And over that weekend I wrote the story Clifford The Big Red Dog and was shocked when it was accepted for publication because I'd never written anything before. W: I see how wonderful. M: Yes, it was. My wife was also in shock when she did realize it wasn’t a dream, but it was just luck. W: But that luck turned into ninety cliff books that have sold 126 million copies in thirteen languages. 17. Who would like to make small talk according to the speaker? A. Relatives. B. Strangers. C. Visitors. 18. Why do people have small talk? A. To express opinions. B. To avoid arguments. C. To show friendliness. 19. Which of the following is a frequent topic in small talk? A. Politics. B. Movies. C. Salaries. 20. What does the speaker recommend at the end of his lecture? A. Asking open-ended questions. B. Feeling free to change topics. C. Making small talk interesting. B 18. C 19. B 20. M: Hello, everyone. Today I’m going to talk about small talk, that is, short conversations people often have with strangers they meet. Such exchanges occur at bus stops, on buses, while waiting in line almost anywhere that strangers gather close together. As a matter of fact, these short conversations are a good way for people to say hello and express friendliness. Such conversations usually cover a wide range of topics. The topics may include weather, customer service, movies, TV shows, local sports or latest news. “But you should always keep it in your mind that private questions about salaries, family life, religious beliefs and politics should be avoided during these conversations. ” Besides, it’s better to ask open-ended questions. If you ask visitors, “Do you like our city?” They may say simply “Yes!” On the other hand, if you ask“What do you think of our city?”, they will have more freedom in answering. This type of question also shows that you’re interested in them. If you appear interested in what people are saying, they’ll feel more comfortable talking with you. 二、阅读理解:第一节(共15小题,每小题2.5分,满分37.5分) A A To some, sunglasses are a fashion choice... 及倒数第二段“Buy one, get one FREE! B。 B I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. No problem, I thought: we’ll buy another. But the insurance payout didn’t even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car-I worked out that, with the loan, we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month. And that’s when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes’ walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family. But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being “too poor to afford a car”? (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.) My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital? (an ambulance) How would the children get to and from their many events? (buses and trains) People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I’d soon realize that a car was a necessity. Eight months on, I wonder whether we’ll ever own a car again. The idea that you “have to” own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question. 24. The author decided to live a car-free life partly because ______. A. most families chose to go car-free B. he was hurt in a terrible car accident C. the cost of a new car was too much D. the traffic jam was unbearable for him 25. What is the attitude of the author’s family toward his plan? A. Supportive. B. Disapproving. C. Optimistic. D. Unconcerned. 26. What did the author suggest his daughters do about their friends’ opinion? A. Argue against it. B. Take their advice. C. Think it over. D. Leave it alone. 27. What conclusion did the author draw after the eight-month car-free life? A. Life cannot go without a car. B. Life without a car is a little bit hard. C. His life gets improved without a car. D. A car-free life does not suit everyone. C 25. B 26. D 27. I worked out that, with the loan, we’d need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as £600 a month. But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. (I wasn’t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach.) We worry about rising car costs, but we’d be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I’m a lot richer because I dared to ask the question. The writer’s purpose in writing the text is to… The author’s attitude towards…is… It can be inferred from the text is that… From the passage we can conclude that… 2. What is the attitude of the author’s family toward his plan? But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn’t shared by my family. 比如;小题3 A. Argue against it. A car-free life does not suit everyone。 本段说家人不同意我的观点,怕朋友议论,我说服他们take the same approach(as mine),就是听我的,不听别人的,与D选项Leave it alone.(置之不理)相吻合。 C I used to constantly overshare so much that “addicted oversharer” became one of my blog tags. Ask me how I was doing, and I’d tell you everything in detail. Then I got therapy. Over time, I learned to share much less, but I still open up quite a lot. At least now I learned the difference between mentioning my marriage and airing all our dirty laundry. It turns out that most of us have been operating under a flawed assumption about openness. “We’ve been warned not to overshare, but the bigger risk is often undersharing,” says Leslie John, PhD, a professor at Harvard Business School. “When we reveal something real — like something slightly imperfect — we signal trust. And trust invites trust back. That’s how relationships deepen.” People assume revealing something vulnerable (脆弱的), like admitting “I get nervous before big presentations”, will ruin their reputation. Yet it almost never does. Instead, small, authentic admissions tend to increase trust without reducing how competent someone appears. What feels risky in the moment often builds connection in the long run. In one of John’s studies, nearly 90% of people said they’d rather hire a job candidate who admitted failing an exam than one who covered up their grades. Of course, there are drawbacks. When oversharing crosses into poor timing, one-sided monologues or a complete failure to consider context, people understandably feel uncomfortable. John figures that the oversharer is quite likely to lie awake at 2 a.m. and kick himself for having said too much. But even here, she has found the bright side: Although oversharing may be embarrassing, it can also win others’ admiration for his bravery in sharing, which will lead to long-term trust that we often fail to notice. “Revealing is a skill,” John says. “And like any skill, it improves with practice.” The goal isn’t to treat every interaction like a confessional (忏悔). It’s to develop situational awareness that lets you open up in ways that actually deepen connection. There’s no need to bare one’s soul all at once. Rather, let openness build gradually. For those holding back, John offers one final question to ask yourself: “What’s the price I’m already paying for not saying this?” 28. What does the underlined phrase “airing all our dirty laundry” most probably mean? A. Washing clothes in public. B. Making private family trouble public. C. Hiding personal secrets. D. Asking for others’ advice. 29. What is Leslie John’s attitude towards undersharing? A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent. 30. What does the example of a job candidate show in paragraph 3? A. Interviewers value honesty more than talent. B. People tend to hide their mistakes for reputation. C. Authentic admissions can make people less competitive. D. Small and proper openness help build trust and connection. 31. Which of the following will the author agree with? A. No pain, no gain. B. Modest sharing bonds people. C. Still waters run deep. D. Loose lips sink ships. B 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第一段中的“Over time, I learned to share much less, but I still open up quite a lot. At least now I learned the difference between mentioning my marriage and airing all our dirty laundry.(久而久之,我学会了少分享一些,但依然会相当坦诚地表达自己。 根据第二段中的“We’ve been warned not to overshare, but the bigger risk is often undersharing.(我们一直被警告不要过度分享,但更大的风险往往是分享不足。)” 故选A项。 根据第三段中的“Instead, small, authentic admissions tend to increase trust without reducing how competent someone appears. What feels risky in the moment often builds connection in the long run. In one of John’s studies, nearly 90% of people said they’d rather hire a job candidate who admitted failing an exam than one who covered up their grades. 通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“When we reveal something real — like something slightly imperfect — we signal trust. And trust invites trust back. That’s how relationships deepen.(当我们展露真实的一面——比如有些不完美的地方——我们就传递出信任,而信任会换来信任,关系就是这样加深的。)”和第四段“Although oversharing may be embarrassing, it can also win others’ admiration for his bravery in sharing, which will lead to long-term trust that we often fail to notice.(虽然过度分享可能令人尴尬,但也会因分享的勇气赢得他人赞赏,进而带来我们常忽略的长期信任。)” D It’s not unusual for snow to fall in winter. During the cold weather months, some folks like to share recipes for how to make snow ice cream and other treats that use fresh powder as a base, adding milk, sugar, and toppings. Obviously, no one is recommending anyone scoop up a bowlful of snow idling on the side of the road, full of salt, muck (淤泥), and other unpleasantness. But it does beg the question: Is any snow actually safe to consume? While you may assume snow that’s freshly fallen and collected in an undisturbed area — even a cup set out for that purpose — is free of any contaminants (污染物), don’t be so sure. According to meteorologist Mary Scarzello Fairbanks, snow isn’t all that clean. It’s formed when water droplets freeze around some dust or debris in the air, forming an ice crystal that continues to collect water vapor and form a snowflake. When it falls, it will also collect things hanging in the air, including dirt and even bacterial particles. Depending on the region, snow could also contain mercury (水银) or pesticides. If it’s windy, snow could even mix with dirt kicked up from the soil before settling. A 2015 study published in the journal Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts even demonstrated how snow could mix with gas exhaust. This all means that, theoretically, your snow ice cream could have some pretty disgusting “toppings”. At the same time, there doesn’t seem to be a surge of reports of illnesses related to snow consumption. Assuming you don’t consume a huge quantity of it, it’s unlikely that whatever contaminants might be in the snow will be present in large enough amounts to cause problems. While no one is technically advocating for snow ingestion here, just a small bite will probably be fine. Eating snow in an emergency is another matter. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns against snow snacking for people like hikers, because it can lower one’s body temperature. In cases where there is a water supply issue, the CDC says it’s safe to take collected snow and boil it to kill off any bacteria. 32. What is the correct order of snow formation? ① Ice crystals are formed. ② Water and vapor are collected. ③ A snowflake comes into being. ④ Water droplets freeze in the air. A. ②④①③ B. ④①②③ C. ②①④③ D. ④①③② 33. What is the function of paragraph 4? A. To introduce a new concept. B. To offer a detailed explanation. C. To pave the way for what follows. D. To back up a previous statement. 34. What can we infer from the text? A. Under no circumstances does the CDC advise eating snow. B. Boiling snow can eliminate all risks associated with eating it. C. Eating snow after it is boiled can lower one’s body temperature. D. Consuming a small quantity of snow is unlikely to cause severe diseases. 35. Which is the best title for the passage? A. The Hidden Dangers of Snow Ice Cream B. How to Safely Consume Snow in Emergencies C. Is Snow Safe to Eat? What You Need to Know D. From Cloud to Table: The Journey of a Snowflake 【答案】32. B 33. D 34. D 35. 根据第三段中的“It’s formed when water droplets freeze around some dust or debris in the air, forming an ice crystal that continues to collect water vapor and form a snowflake.(它是由水滴在空气中的尘埃或碎屑周围冻结形成冰晶,冰晶不断聚集水蒸气进而形成雪花。)” 根据第三段中的“According to meteorologist Mary Scarzello Fairbanks, snow isn’t all that clean.(根据气象学家玛丽·斯卡泽洛·费尔班克斯的说法,雪并不是那么干净。)”以及第四段中的“When it falls, it will also collect things hanging in the air, including dirt and even bacterial particles. 根据第五段中的“Assuming you don’t consume a huge quantity of it, it’s unlikely that whatever contaminants might be in the snow will be present in large enough amounts to cause problems.(只要不大量食用,雪中的污染物含量不大可能达到致病水平。)” 通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“But it does beg the question: Is any snow actually safe to consume?(但这确实引出一个问题:到底有没有雪是可以安全食用的?)” 第二节 阅读七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Many spend most of their day dealing with even simple tasks; the amount of energy it takes is almost unbearable. C选项“It probably leaves you unable to stay focused. 【37题详解】 后文“Because too much responsibility can stop you from completing the most important tasks at hand. Put the things that will help you achieve your goals first in order to lighten up your “to-do” list. A选项“Avoid being in all types of business. 故选A。 【38题详解】 前文“The 80/20 rule says that 20% of our effort produces 80% of our results. This rule may sound pretty specific.(二八定律指出,20%的努力产生80%的结果。 B选项“But it applies to every side of our lives. 【39题详解】 前文“Trying to handle many tasks at once can be counterproductive (适得其反的) because it requires you to change your skill sets. We may love to try to complete several tasks in a given amount of time, but this uses more of our energy. Focusing on one task at a time will help you think more deeply and creatively.(试图一次处理许多任务可能会适得其反,因为这需要你改变自己的技能。 F选项“Besides, not everything needs your attention immediately. 【40题详解】 前文“If you find yourself worried that you can’t deal with so much responsibility and answer everyone immediately, use these tips to help you in your daily life.( 如果你发现自己担心自己不能处理这么多的责任并立即回答每个人的问题,那么使用这些建议来帮助你在日常生活中。)” G选项“You can find them helpful in reducing your stress from work or study. 说明这些技巧的作用,与前文呼应,且与后文“Thus you will have a slower-paced, more mindful life.(这样你的生活节奏会更慢,更专注。)” 三、完形填空:(共15小题,每小题1分,满分15分) The bitter cold of a December afternoon was ruining my mood as I walked on the street. For the Chinese people, it is more than a ____64____ (season) delicacy; it is ____65____ cultural symbol connecting people to nature, history and the warmth of spring. 56. which 57. primarily 58. with 59. are boiled 60. to form 61. shaped 62. carries 63. arrival 64. seasonal 65. a 【解析】 【导语】主要介绍中国传统小吃青团的原料、制作工艺、口味特点以及其承载的春日寓意与文化内涵。 固定搭配be filled with,意为“充满;包裹有”,所以此处为介词with。 Dear Lisa, I hope this email finds you well. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Lisa, I hope this email finds you well. Jim and Andy walked along the beach, looking for an adventure. They joked that some day they would find a talking fish or a mermaid(美人鱼)or a bottle with a treasure map inside. So far they had only found shells and rocks and seaweed.Today though was different. The boys felt excited. Sea crabs(螃蟹)scampered(奔跑)on the rocks,up one side and down the other. They were quick and lively. The tide didn't seem to ever wash them away. Then Jim saw a fish. It was stranded(搁浅)on the beach, just flopping(笨拙移动) around. "Can it talk?"Andy asked. "It looks like any other fish,"Jim said.He picked it up gently and carried it to the water. "Do you think it will grant us any wishes?"Andy laughed. The boys watched as the silver fish sped off through the water."No.Maybe next time."Jim grinned. As the two friends walked farther down the beach they came upon a bottle. It was green with a cork (软木塞)in the mouth. "Our luck will change.Does it have a map inside or a genie(神怪)?"joked Andy. Andy reached down and picked up the bottle. He rubbed it.Nothing happened. He pulled on the cork. Nothing happened. He shook it. Nothing happened. “Try the cork again.I bet the genie is waiting for us to release him.Or we'll find a treasure map and have a real adventure,"Jim exclaimed. Andy tugged(用力拉)again on the cork. He wiggled(扭动)it back and forth. He twisted(旋转;扭)it around and around. Finally, it popped out(弹出)without breaking.Andy shook the bottle.Nothing came out.Looking inside he couldn't see anything.Jim looked too and shook his head. Empty. "It's just an old wine bottle,"Jim complained. He grabbed the bottle and tossed(扔)it back onto the sand. 注意: 1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。 Paragraph 1: The bottle hit a rock and shattered(破碎)into many pieces. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Two boys ran after it. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1 The bottle hit a rock and shattered into many pieces. Both Andy and Jim gasped as they saw a long, silver key on the ground in the glass pieces. Then they looked at each other. Why didn't it make any noise when they shook the bottle? Why didn't they see it?Andy bent over to pick up the key.Suddenly the glass pieces came together to form a bottle again. The key was mysteriously back inside! And the bottle began rolling slowly toward the sea. Paragraph 2 Two boys ran after it.When they entered the sea, astonishingly they didn't sink into the water but floated on the surface of it.They felt excited. They followed the bottle and then it stopped near an island where there was lots of treasure like diamonds and stones."You can take as much as possible,"a voice came from the coast where a talking fish was swimming. It was the stranded fish that Jim saved and put back into the water. Both Andy and Jim gasped as they saw a long, silver key on the ground in the glass pieces.这句话运用了as引导的时间状语从句;本文也使用了一些固定词组,如bend over ; pick up; run after等。 Where does the conversation probably take place? But When You’re Driving, These Sunglasses May Save Your Life! Studies by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that most (74%) of the crashes occurred on clear, sunny days. Deadly accidents are regularly caused by blinding glare (强光). Not all sunglasses are created equal. With all the fancy fashion eyewear designs out there it can be easy to overlook what really matters — the lenses (镜片). But now, research by scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has brought forth ground-breaking technology. C I used to constantly overshare so much that “addicted oversharer” became one of my blog tags. D It’s not unusual for snow to fall in winter. From Cloud to Table: The Journey of a Snowflake 第二节 阅读七选五(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Many spend most of their day dealing with even simple tasks; the amount of energy it takes is almost unbearable. Whether you’re a full-time student or an employee, you probably know the feeling of needing to fulfill obligations (履行责任) immediately. ____36____ Luckily, there are some easy ways to increase your concentration in your daily life. ____37____ Because too much responsibility can stop you from completing the most important tasks at hand. Put the things that will help you achieve your goals first in order to lighten up your “to-do” list. When you do so, you’ll have more focus, a clear game plan, and a sound state of mind. The 80/20 rule says that 20% of our effort produces 80% of our results. This rule may sound pretty specific. ____38____ When it comes to work, we should know which tasks really matter to save time.
