Yang Zhenning’s View on Learning
Yang Zhenning, a great scientist who made important contributions to physics, had some thoughtful ideas about education. Born in 1922, he showed a talent for mathematics at a young age. However, his father made an unusual decision. Instead of pushing him to study more math, he hired a tutor to teach him classical Chinese works like The Works of Mencius (《孟子》). This experience helped Yang develop good values and broad knowledge, which later proved valuable in his life.
Yang criticized the “spoon-feeding education” (填鸭式教育). He believed that forcing students to memorize too many facts made them “breathless” and killed their creativity and interest in learning. He thought it was more important for students to keep their natural curiosity.
So, what did he suggest? He supported the “permeation” method. This means learning through regular exposure(接触) to materials. You don’t need to understand everything completely at first. Just keep reading and listening, and understanding will come naturally over time.
Besides knowledge, Yang also stressed the importance of developing personal “taste” in learning. Similar to how artists have their own style, scientists need their own judgement. This taste helps them choose suitable research directions. Yang himself successfully combined different ways of thinking from both Eastern and Western education, which gave him a unique advantage.
