Passage 1
An Experiment about How to Get Clean Water
What you need:
What to do:
Step 1. Pour about 5 cm of muddy water into the cooking pot.
Step 2. Place the drinking glass right side up in the middle of the cooking pot.
Step 3. Cover the cooking pot with clear plastic food wrap, stick the wrap with tape, but leave enough slack (松弛度) in the wrap so that it can hang downwards.
Step 4. Place the coin in the middle of the plastic food wrap so that the wrap hangs down in the middle, directly over (but not touching) the glass.
Step 5. Place the apparatus (装置) in direct sunlight.
What to see:
After about ten minutes or so, little drops of water begin to appear on the underside of the plastic food wrap. They go down the plastic wrap slowly and fall into the glass. The water in the glass is now clean and the mud is left at the bottom of the cooking pot.
How it works:
This activity uses the energy in sunlight to turn muddy water into drinking water.

Passage 2
What we eat and drink can influence how our body smells. Many studies at universities around the world have shown that. Researchers say that each of us has a special body smell.
Lina Begdache, an expert of health from the State University of New York, said the smell our body gives off comes from two areas. One is the stomach, which is full of bacteria (细菌). When these bacteria break down food, gases are let out through our breath. Some of these gases can give us bad breath. The second area is the skin (皮肤). Food can change the smell of bacteria on our skin when we sweat (出汗).
Researchers say the foods that give off the strongest smells have a special thing — sulphur (硫), in them. This thing often creates a “bad-egg smell”. Vegetables like cabbages have a lot of sulphur. Scientists also say drinks have an influence on our body smell. The alcohol (酒精) in drinks can lead to stronger, unpleasant body smell and bad breath. The caffeine (咖啡因) in coffee can make us sweat more in areas like the part under the arms.
So, if we want to have a more pleasant smell, we should eat food like tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges, apples, and yogurt, and drink water and green tea.
5. What makes people’s body smell different?
A. The sports they do. B. The clothes they wear.
C. The sleep habits they have. D. The food and drink they have.
6. How is the body smell changed through the skin?
A. Bad breath is given through the skin.
B. Bacteria change the smell of the sweat.
C. Food changes the smell of the bacteria on the skin.
D. Gases from the stomach are let out through the skin.
7. What should you avoid if you want to have a nicer body smell?
A. Vegetables without sulphur. B. Yogurt, water and green tea.
C. Drinks with alcohol and caffeine. D. Fruit like oranges and apples.
8. Where is the text most probably from?
A. A cookbook. B. A nature report. C. A guidebook. D. A science magazine.
Passage 3
I have never been competitive, never winning or truly entering a single competition. My best friend Amy, however, is another story, she always takes first place at all her swimming competitions. We’ve been friends for ten years, and her energy and bright smile still warm me.
I sat in the front row of the stadium, certain Amy would win the Olympic final.
I’d seen her exhausting daily training and extra hours spent in the pool. Her coach and mother sat beside me, as nervous as I was. The race was intense (激烈的). Amy was behind at first, then caught up, touching the wall just before her rival (对手). The crowd cheered, but I smiled with pride.
“What does winning feel like?” I asked that night. “Relief,” she said. “Before every competition, I feel like a string (弦) pulled too tight. I train harder and harder just to silence the voice telling me I’m not good enough. After it’s over, the string breaks. At least the pain stops.” Swimming, once her joy, had become a pressure, so she decided to quit (退出).
I was shocked. She said she had thought about it for a long time and only needed my support, because she knew her mother and coach would be angry, which turned out to be true.
I realized we only see champions’ medals, not their pressure. Some reach the top only to want a different life.
Even if Amy chooses an ordinary path, she’ll always be special to me.
9. Why did the writer believe Amy would win the gold medal this time?
A. Because Amy had a great talent for swimming.
B. Because Amy was always full of energy in races.
C. Because Amy made long-term efforts before the race.
D. Because Amy was supported by her coach and mother.
10. What did Amy mean by comparing her feeling to “a string pulled too tight”?
A. She was eager to win.
B. She tried to do everything perfectly.
C. She was afraid of disappointing others.
D. She was nervous and under great pressure.
11. Which of the following words can best describe Amy?
A. Outgoing and humorous B. Hard-working and stressed
C. Talented and confident D. Brave and proud
12. What is the main message of the passage?
A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
B. Where there is a will, there is a way.
C. Success depends on personal happiness.
D. Winning and confidence often go hand in hand.
Passage 4
An online survey asked working people a question and a newspaper published the results. Here’s what five of those people said.
If you want to be a software designer and build an app, you don’t need to know about history or biology. Learning facts about Ancient Rome and Ancient China was interesting, but I haven’t used them in my job.
— Lydia, software engineer
My grandmother once told me that at school she hadn’t learned what to think; she’d learned how to think. When we study history, we learn about people, politics, mistakes in the past, and the history of great ideas. All of these things help us to understand our place in the world and to learn to think clearly. By the time I graduated from high school, I had certainly learned to think.
— Sophia, lawyer
It depends on the type of job you want. If you want to be a teacher, then school is the perfect preparation. If you want to be a chef, school is a great start, but then you need something more — you need to learn all about food. When I got my first job, my boss said it was the beginning of my education.
— Daniela, chef
When you play football at school, you learn about the sport — the rules, how to move the ball, etc. — but you also learn about working with a team. In most jobs, you work with some kind of team. Playing sports at school gave me a lot of teamwork skills.
— Paul, manager
Not at all — or at least not for me. Does a firefighter learn to fight fires at school? Never. Sadly, for most jobs, you don’t need to know the things you learn in school. I forgot about school when I started working.
— Aslan, construction worker
13. Which of the following is probably the question in the survey?
A. Can you tell us something about your job?
B. Did school prepare you for the world of work?
C. Did you learn something at school?
D. Do you enjoy doing your job?
14. Who gave a negative answer to the question?
A. Lydia and Daniela. B. Paul and Aslan. C. Lydia and Aslan. D. Daniela and Paul.
15. Why did Sophia mention her grandmother?
A. Because she had a good relationship with her grandmother.
B. Because Sophia and her grandmother went to the same school.
C. Because her grandmother’s idea is out of date.
D. Because she agreed with her grandmother.
16. Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the survey?
A. Lydia doesn’t think history is helpful when creating an app.
B. Daniela thinks what you learn at school is very useful if you want to be a teacher.
C. In Paul’s opinion, playing team sports prepares him for his job.
D. Aslan is not sure whether a firefighter learns to fight fire at school.

In China, students usually have summer and winter vacations and public holidays. But now, thanks to a government action plan introduced in March, many schools are adding extra (额外的) days off. The idea is that some primary and secondary schools could add spring and autumn breaks for students based on their own needs.
In Guangzhou, 310 students from Yuyan Middle School enjoyed a five-day spring break in March. They looked into history and science at sites (地点) like the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, and Zhuhai Aerospace Land (珠海太空中心). “While others are in classrooms, we’re out enjoying ourselves,” one of the students told Xinhua.
Yin Xianwen, a teacher from the school, sees it as a great way to learn. “Watching plants grow is a lesson in nature, visiting historical sites is a history lesson, and traveling together is a lesson in social skills,” Yin told People’s Daily. “It offers students the chance to get the most precious (宝贵的) growth experiences during the most beautiful season.”
Also, students can enjoy their spring break with families. It can help bring families closer together and reduce stress in studying, said Xinhua.
However, there are some challenges. Not all parents can take time off when their kids do, so some children may end up staying home and playing on their phones. Schools also need to find a way to fit all their lessons into the new schedule. To make these breaks work well, the government, schools, parents and communities need to work together, noted People’s Daily.
