When we talk about climate responsibility, we often focus on every single person’s daily habits. We are told to recycle, eat less meat or reduce our personal “carbon footprints” in our daily life. But we forget the main causes of carbon emissions (碳排放), such as industrial production and governments’ support for oil.
What we really need are big changes in politics and economy (经济) — not just small changes in our daily lives. In fact, the science of climate change is hard to explain, but we often make it simple. Riding bikes and eating less meat are helpful, but they are not enough. Most carbon emissions come from public areas. For example, heating homes uses a bit more energy than all the passenger cars in the world. Even making electric cars causes carbon emissions.
Actually, carbon emissions are usually correlated with economic activities. Data shows 63% of emissions come from developing countries. However, today’s rich countries caused carbon emissions freely when they were developing. Now, they are telling developing countries to reduce their carbon emissions. It is unfair because developing countries also need to develop their economies to improve people’s lives.
We have technologies to solve these problems, but they are expensive. ▲ They should find the main polluters, support green technology and make strict rules. There will be some difficulties, but everyone can help push for the big changes.
( ) 56. What do people often focus on when talking about climate responsibility?
A. People’s daily habits. B. Industrial production.
C. Governments’ support for oil. D. Big political changes.
( ) 57. Which activity mentioned in Paragraph 2 produces more carbon?
A. Riding bikes. B. Heating homes.
C. Eating less meat. D. Driving passenger cars.
( ) 58. What does the underlined word “correlated” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Covered. B. Crowded. C. Compared. D. Connected.
( ) 59. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4?
A. People should also make efforts. B. Scientists should find new ways.
C. Governments must take real actions. D. Companies must try something useful.
( ) 60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Reduce Our Carbon Footprints B. Technologies to Solve Climate Problems
C. Economic Activities and Carbon Emissions D. Climate Responsibility: More Than Personal Efforts

In 2025, primary and junior high school students in some cities like Ningbo, Huzhou, Jiaxing and Foshan enjoyed a three-day autumn break from November 12 to 14. With weekends, the holiday could last five days. And the spring break will be around the May Day holiday in 2026. These new breaks are designed to reduce students’ study pressure and help them get closer to nature and society. During the breaks, teachers should give little or no written homework so that students can take part in more social practice.
However, parents have different ideas. Some think the breaks are meaningful and hope to travel with their children. But others worry that they have to work and nobody looks after their children. Some experts suggest that a paid vacation system for parents should be introduced, encouraging them to spend more time with their children during the new breaks.
