What is the passage mainly about?
What is the best title for the passage?
What does the writer want to tell us?
Which is the best summary?
Tom is not very tall, but he plays basketball very well.
The weather was terrible, but the trip was unforgettable.
规律:but / however 前面 = 铺垫或让步;but / however 后面 = 真正要说的
例:一篇文章里 recycling(回收)出现了7次
例:friendship(友谊)在全文每段都有
Reading is one of the most important habits a child can develop.
Children who read regularly tend to have better vocabulary, stronger
concentration and higher academic performance. Reading also helps
children understand different cultures and develop empathy. Whether
it is fiction, non-fiction or poetry, every book offers something
valuable. Parents and teachers play a key role in encouraging children
to read from an early age. Even just fifteen minutes of reading a day
can make a significant difference over time.
Reading is one of the most important habits a child can develop.
高频重复词:reading / read(出现多次,贯穿全文)
1. What is the passage mainly about? ( )
A. How children can improve their vocabulary
B. The importance of reading for children
C. How parents can help children with homework
D. Why children should read poetry
2. What is the best title for this passage? ( )
A. Fifteen Minutes a Day B. Books and Culture
C. Why Children Should Read D. How to Study Better
Keeping a pet can teach children many valuable lessons. When children
take care of a pet, they learn responsibility because the animal depends
on them for food, water and exercise. Pets also help children develop
patience, as animals need time and gentle handling. Studies show that
children who have pets tend to be more empathetic towards others.
Furthermore, playing with pets reduces stress and brings happiness.
In short, a pet is not just a companion — it is also a wonderful teacher.
Keeping a pet can teach children many valuable lessons.
最后一段总结:a pet is not just a companion — it is also a wonderful teacher
3. What is the writer's main message in this passage? ( )
A. Children should always have a dog
B. Pets can teach children important life lessons
C. How to choose the right pet for your child
D. Why children with pets get better grades
4. Which is the best title for this passage? ( )
A. How to Care for a Pet B. Pets as Teachers
C. Dogs and Children D. Reducing Stress with Pets
The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, yet much of it
remains unexplored. Scientists believe there are millions of unknown
species living in the deep ocean. Every year, researchers discover new
creatures that have never been seen before. However, human activities
such as pollution and overfishing are threatening ocean ecosystems.
Many ocean species are disappearing before we even know they exist.
Protecting the ocean is not just an environmental issue — it is essential
for the survival of life on Earth.
高频重复词:ocean(出现5次)/ species(出现3次)/ Earth(出现2次)
转折词:however → 后面是重点:human activities threatening ocean ecosystems
Protecting the ocean is essential for the survival of life
1. What is this passage mainly about? ( )
A. How scientists explore the deep ocean
B. Why there are so many unknown species
C. The importance of protecting the ocean
D. How pollution affects fish populations
A student chose option A because the word 'scientists' appeared twice. ( )
This student's reasoning is:
A. Correct — scientists is mentioned, so it must be the main idea
B. Wrong — the whole passage is about the ocean, not just scientists
C. Correct — the first sentence mentions scientists
D. Wrong — scientists never appears in the passage
Although the journey was difficult, the experience changed his life.
→ 重点:the experience changed his life(不是旅途困难)
例:The city has many problems. However, it is still a wonderful place to live.
→ 重点:it is still a wonderful place(不是城市有问题)
Many people think that learning a new language is too difficult and
time-consuming. However, research shows that learning another language
has many benefits that make the effort worthwhile. People who speak
more than one language tend to have better memory and problem-solving
skills. They are also more likely to get well-paid jobs. Although it
takes time and effort, learning a second language is one of the best
investments you can make for your future.
however 后面:research shows learning another language has many benefits(重点来了!)
although 让步后:学语言确实要时间(次要),主句:one of the best investments(重点)
1. What does the writer want to tell us? ( )
A. Learning a language is too difficult for most people
B. Learning a second language is very beneficial
C. People should find well-paid jobs
D. Memory and problem-solving are important skills
Why is option A wrong? ( )
A. Because the passage never mentions difficulty
B. Because 'difficult' appears in the first sentence, which is the opposite view, not the main idea
C. Because the passage is only about jobs
D. Because the writer agrees it is easy
Sleep is essential for good health. When we sleep, our bodies repair
themselves and our brains process the information from the day. Children
aged 6 to 12 need between 9 and 12 hours of sleep each night. However,
many children today are not getting enough sleep because of homework,
screens and late-night activities. Lack of sleep can lead to poor
concentration, irritability and lower academic performance. Experts
recommend turning off screens at least one hour before bedtime and
keeping a regular sleep schedule.
Sleep is essential for good health(主题句)
however 后:many children not getting enough sleep(问题所在,重点)
1. What is the best title for this passage? ( )
A. How Much Sleep Do Adults Need?
B. Sleep and Children's Health (刚刚好)
C. Turn Off Your Screens
D. Health and Exercise for Kids
Why is option C wrong even though it's mentioned in the passage? ( )
A. Because screens are not mentioned
B. Because turning off screens is only one small detail, not the whole passage
C. Because the passage disagrees with this advice
D. Because the title is too long
Many young people today spend hours on their smartphones every day.
While technology offers many benefits — staying connected, learning
online and accessing information instantly — there are growing concerns
about its effects on young people's wellbeing. Studies show that
excessive screen time is linked to poor sleep, reduced physical activity
and increased feelings of anxiety. However, the solution is not to ban
technology completely. Instead, experts recommend finding a healthy
balance: using technology for productive activities, setting daily screen
time limits, and making sure to spend time outdoors and with friends.
With the right approach, technology can be a tool for growth rather
than a source of harm.
1. What is the passage mainly about? ( )
A. Why smartphones are dangerous for young people
B. How to find a healthy balance with technology
C. The benefits of using technology for learning
D. Why young people should stop using smartphones
2. What is the best title for this passage? ( )
A. Smartphones and Social Media
B. Technology: Good or Bad?
C. Finding a Healthy Balance with Technology
D. How Technology Affects Sleep
3. What does the writer want to tell us? ( )
A. Technology should be completely banned for young people
B. Young people spend too much time on phones
C. Technology can be helpful if used in the right way
D. Outdoor activities are better than using technology
Volunteering is one of the most rewarding things a young person can do.
When you give your time to help others, you gain much more than you give.
Volunteers develop real-world skills such as communication, teamwork
and problem-solving. They also build confidence and a sense of purpose.
Although volunteering takes time away from other activities, the personal
growth it brings is invaluable. Many young volunteers say that their
experiences changed their perspective on life and helped them decide on
their future careers. In summary, volunteering is not a sacrifice — it is
an investment in yourself.
4. What is the main idea of this passage? ( )
A. How to find a volunteering opportunity
B. Why volunteering benefits young people greatly
C. The difficulties of volunteering as a student
D. How volunteering helps you choose a career
A student chose D because the last paragraph mentions careers. ( )
Why is this reasoning incorrect?
A. Because careers are never mentioned
B. Because careers is just one detail; the whole passage is about all benefits of volunteering
C. Because the last paragraph is not important
D. Because the student misread the passage
短文A:1.B 2.C
