How do you cool off on hot summer days? You might turn on your air conditioner, right? In India, only a few families have an air conditioner, while others have to face the high temperature without any cooling tools.
Now, an ancient material is helping: terracotta (赤陶土). Thousands of years ago, the Harappan people (哈拉帕人) used terracotta pots to store water. These pots are still widely used in the Indian countryside today. They help cool water without using electricity. The material is not expensive as each pot costs only one U.S. dollar.
How do these pots work? Terracotta has many tiny holes on its surface. These holes allow water to slowly dry up. As the water dries up, it carries heat away and makes the air cooler.
Many Indian architects (建筑师) get useful ideas from this simple idea. They now use terracotta in their building designs to control indoor temperatures. One example is Ant Studio. Its “Cool Ant” project adds a terracotta “skin” to buildings. The skin helps moisture (潮气) and heat move between indoor and outdoor spaces. “We’ve seen temperature drops of 6℃ to 8℃ across more than 30 sites in India,” says the company’s founder.
Other Indian companies are joining in too. A company named A Threshold uses recycled terracotta to build “breathing” walls. These walls work much like Ant Studio’s terracotta “skin”. What’s more, Mitti Cool has developed terracotta fridges. They can keep food fresh for three to five days without power. For homes without enough electricity, they can be real helpers.
Researchers believe terracotta could be a “_________” for our warming planet. As word spreads, the material may become more widely used. We could all stay cool without using lots of energy.
21. How does the writer begin this passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By telling stories.
C. By listing numbers. D. By giving reasons.
22. Why is terracotta becoming popular in India for cooling?
A. It can produce electricity.
B. It is cheap and energy-saving.
C. It is a newly invented material.
D. It was invented by Indian people.
23. How do terracotta pots keep the air cool from Paragraph 3?
A. They are able to take in lots of sunlight.
B. They are made of a special kind of cold stone.
C. They are filled with ice before the water is added.
D. They have small holes that can help take heat away.
24. What can we learn about terracotta “skin” from the passage?
A. It is able to help lower indoor temperatures.
B. It is made from recycled materials like plastic.
C. It is a fridge in buildings in Indian companies.
D. It is used for air conditioners in Indian families.
25. Which one is most likely covered by the ink blot (墨迹) in the last paragraph?
“Researchers believe terracotta could be a “________” for our warming planet.”

C. game changer D. trouble maker

B. They are made of a special kind of cold stone.

【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了赤陶(terracotta)这一古老材料在印度被用作无电降温工具的原理,以及它在现代建筑、生活中的创新应用,指出它可能成为应对全球变暖的环保方案。
【21题详解】
文章开头以“How do you cool off on hot summer days? You might turn on your air conditioner, right?”这两个问句引入话题,因此作者是通过提问的方式开篇的。
【22题详解】
根据原文第二段,赤陶 “不耗电”且“价格不贵(The material is not expensive as each pot costs only one U.S. dollar)”,因此它流行的原因是便宜又节能。
【23题详解】
根据原文第三段,“These holes allow water to slowly dry up. As the water dries up, it carries heat away and makes the air cooler.”说明赤陶罐表面的小孔能带走热量,从而让空气变凉。
【24题详解】
根据原文第四段,“Its ‘Cool Ant’ project adds a terracotta ‘skin’ to buildings... We’ve seen temperature drops of 6℃ to 8℃ across more than 30 sites in India”,说明赤陶 “外壳” 能帮助降低室内温度。
【25题详解】
根据上下文,赤陶作为一种环保、低成本的降温材料,被认为可以帮助应对全球变暖,改变现有局面,因此最可能的词是game-changer(改变游戏规则的事物)。
