Explore Fleadh The world’s biggest celebration of Irish music and culture — shorthand for a party for the ages — comes to Belfast in 2026. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann will take place from 2-9 August, with around 700,000 visitors expected across the week. Thankfully there will be more than enough entertainment (娱乐活动) to go round, with a full list of marching bands, street performances, concerts and pub gatherings. Attend the KMF First taking place in 1980 and now a fixture in the outdoor calendar, Kendal Mountain Festival (19-22 November) is a four-day gathering that pulls thousands of adventure-seekers to the Lake District. Film screenings and expert talks are a big part of the draw. It’s one of the largest events of its kind in the world. Observe a solar eclipse (日食) Put your eyes (with safe solar-viewing glasses) to the skies this summer. A solar eclipse will take place on 12 August, when upwards of 90% of the Sun will be hidden from our UK observation point (Greenland, Iceland and some northern areas of Spain and Portugal will see a total eclipse). Be part of Samhain The final nights of October aren’t always about pumpkins and bags of sweets. The origins of Halloween lie in Ireland, where the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain marks the changing of the seasons: a time when the dividing line between our world and the spirit world is at its thinnest. Samhain dates back to the 9th century but is now celebrated in lively fashion in Derry and on the other side in Trim and Athboy, County Meath. 1. What is Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann mainly about? A. Sports. B. Films. C. Music. D. Food. 2. Which event takes place the latest this year? A. Attend the KMF. B. Explore Fleadh. C. Observe a solar eclipse. D. Be part of Samhain. 3. What do we know about Samhain? A. It is about pumpkins. B. It is celebrated in Portugal. C. It has a long history. D. It originates from Halloween. B It was 2019 when 40-year-old Vichitra Senthil Kumar began to feel a sense of restlessness, an absence she could not quite name. “I always had a sense that something was lacking,” said Kumar, who was a former college football player. But a turning point came when she joined the Rotary Club, an international group to promote community service, in 2019. Every day, Kumar would finish work and attend a variety of Rotary social work programmes. Kumar took to community outreach like a fish to water and her active efforts led to her being voted president of her club in 2021. That same year, Tiruppur’s Government Medical College Hospital started its breast-milk (母乳) bank and contacted Kumar and her team for help with basic equipment such as tables and posters. The breast milk collected was given to premature (早产的) and newborn babies who were left alone or whose mothers were unable to feed them because of illness. “In the beginning, I had no idea about these babies or their poor situation. All I knew was the milk we collected would be used to feed them. One day I asked the doctor on duty if I could go to see the babies in the wards (病房). I saw a tiny baby placed inside a box with its eyes covered to protect it from the light. Its weight was only around 600 grams. Seeing that baby changed something in me. I decided to take part in collecting breast milk no matter how far it is and do whatever it takes to help,” she added. Staying true to her determination, Kumar made full use of her Rotary network, friends and family to collect milk from across the region, even as far as Bangalore, 300 km away. Though met with numerous difficulties, Kumar never gave up. “If there’s even one thought to help people or save lives, anything can be done. If you have the intention to help, that’s enough to take action and can even inspire others to follow suit,” said Kumar. 4. What led to Kumar’s being voted president of her club? A. Her experience. B. Her knowledge. C. Her commitment. D. Her leadership skills. 5. What did the hospital hope to get from Kumar and her team? A. Their care for newborns. B. Some elementary supplies. C. Their support for breastfeeding. D. A large amount of breast milk. 6. What inspired Kumar to help collect breast milk? A. The mission of the Rotary Club. B. Her professional responsibility. C. The request from hospital staff. D. Her meeting with a premature baby. 7. What can be known about Kumar’s belief? A. Difficulties determine success. B. Action requires perfect planning. C. Intention sets off collective action. D. Professional networks ensure results. C Understanding everyday conversation requires more than just knowing the literal meanings of words; it includes understanding the context in which they are spoken. For example, when it’s raining heavily, saying “lovely weather” is clearly sarcastic (讽刺的). This ability to work out the real meaning from non-literal language is known as pragmatic (语用的) language ability, which includes understanding sarcasm, metaphors, and white lies. Evelina Fedorenko, an MIT professor, and her coworkers have found that these skills can be grouped based on the types of guesses they require. Their study of 800 people identified three main groups of pragmatic skills: guesses based on social traditions and rules, knowledge of how the physical world works, and explaining differences in voice, which can indicate stress or emotion. Past research on language understanding has mainly focused on literal meanings and how words fit together. However, Fedorenko notes that context is very important. For example, the phrase “people are leaving” can mean the party is ending if it’s late, or the party isn’t good if it’s early. To explore pragmatic language skills, Fedorenko and Edward Gibson, an MIT professor of brain and cognitive (认知的) sciences, used an “individual differences” approach, studying many people as they perform various tasks. This method helps determine whether the same brain processes are responsible for different tasks. The researchers created 20 tasks, including understanding humor, sarcasm, and voice changes that affect the meaning of the sentence. Among the first 400 people who took part in the research, the researchers found that the tasks fell into three groups: social context, general world knowledge, and voice. Testing another 400 people confirmed these groups. Future work aims to use brain imaging to link these pragmatic parts to specific brain regions. This research could also help study people with autism (自闭症), who may struggle with social signals, and compare pragmatic language use across different cultures. 8. Why is pragmatic language ability in conversation important? A. It improves reading speed greatly. B. It helps memorize more vocabulary. C. It focuses on correct grammar rules. D. It allows understanding beyond words. 9. What did Fedorenko’s study find about pragmatic skills? A. Sarcasm is the hardest to understand. B. Brain processes are exactly the same. C. They are based on three types of guesses. D. People with autism lack world knowledge. 10. What can be learned from the example “people are leaving” in paragraph 3? A. Early parties often have bad results. B. Words hold unchangeable meanings. C. Late parties are usually more popular. D. Context determines the hidden meaning. 11. What can be the best title for the text? A. A New Study Found Language Difficulties B. Language Is Understood Through Context C. Brain Processes Language in Varied Ways D. Voice and Emotion Matter in Conversation D A new project is hoping to save the threatened British swallowtail butterfly by raising the insects from frozen eggs — a process known as cryopreservation (冷冻保存), where biological material is stored at extremely low temperatures for future use. This species, mostly black and cream, has red and blue false eyes on its wings as a warning to deter natural enemies, greatly increasing its chances of survival in the wild. It is typically seen in areas of the Norfolk Broads where a plant called milk-parsley grows, but living in such a limited area puts its future at risk. British swallowtails are classified as endangered on the GB Red List and are threatened by climate change and the loss of both living areas and genetic (基因的) varieties. “Although this has been an excellent summer for our native butterflies, the long-term picture for the British swallowtail is one of reduction,” says Dr. Alvin Helden at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). The British swallowtail population fell by 57% in the last 20 years, although this has stopped getting worse thanks to protection efforts. Experts from ARU, Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park and the British wildlife biobank Nature’s SAFE are working together to find new solutions to slow this reduction further. “Our project will connect fieldwork with lab research to see if we can establish a dependable method for storing the British swallowtail’s genetic material by using its closely related, but less endangered, European cousin,” explains Helden. Using a genetically similar European swallowtail species that is kept at Jimmy’s Farm & Wildlife Park, they will try to raise butterflies from cryopreserved eggs that were frozen at a temperature of -196 ℃. Their goal is to see how successfully they develop and reproduce compared with butterflies hatched (孵化) from non-frozen eggs. If it works, the researchers hope to use the method with the British swallowtail, storing its frozen eggs in case they can be used in future raising and reintroduction projects. “Building capability in this area provides the opportunity to create impact for food production and protection of variety in nature — the key mix for human and planetary health,” says Debbie Rolmanis of Nature’s SAFE. 12. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Frighten. B. Attract. C. Watch. D. Discover. 13. What can we learn about the population of swallowtail according to Dr. Helden? A. It will continue to reduce. B. It will drop by 57%. C. It remains relatively unchanged. D. It is increasing gradually. 14. What will the researchers do first in their project? A. Enlarge the habitat of the butterflies. B. Develop a similar species with frozen eggs. C. Reproduce the butterflies at a low temperature. D. Study the make-up of the swallowtail butterflies. 15. What does Debbie Rolmanis think of the project? A. Successful. B. Impractical. C. Meaningful. D. Groundbreaking. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Should spelling tests be canceled? Do you have to do regular spelling tests at school? How do you feel about them? For some pupils (小学生), they’re a common part of school life. ____16____ They argue that these tests are unfair to students and put too much pressure on them. On the other hand, some people think that they’re an effective way of keeping track of students’ progress. What’s your view? Should spelling tests be canceled? Yes — they create too much pressure. Pupils should be taught to enjoy words and reading at a young age rather than focusing on tests, which put them under pressure and can be stressful. ____17____ A lot of writing is done on computers and there are tools such as spell-checkers that people can use to make sure they’re spelling words correctly, so putting pupils through spelling tests is unnecessary. Plus, some children with conditions such as dyslexia (读写障碍) can struggle with spelling, so tests might not be fair. ____18____ No — spelling tests still have a role to play. ____19____ It can make sure that people understand each other correctly. Even in the digital world, people often write to each other by email. Good spelling can be necessary for making sure people aren’t misunderstood — and spell-checkers aren’t always the answer. While these tools are useful, they aren’t always available and they can certainly fail, so it’s important not to depend only on technology. ____20____ Moreover, doing well in a spelling test feels good. Spelling is related to other skills such as reading and writing, so it makes sense for teachers to check how well their students are performing. A. Spelling tests damage children’s confidence. B. Besides, spelling is becoming less important. C. Proper spelling is important for communication. D. However, some people think it’s time to move on. E. Improving spelling is the first step to doing well in your studies. F. Actually, in the computer age, spelling remains an important part. G. There should be more inclusive ways of measuring progress with spelling. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 Rock climbing is a sport that includes using ropes and other equipment to climb up a rock face, either outdoors or an artificial one indoors. We were both looking through the cheap soup bones. My family was short of money, so I often had to be creative with meals. The old man looked at my three children and told me they were beautiful. I thanked him and kept shopping. Since moving to Baltimore six months earlier, I had seen many old men like him. They often sat on the long chairs in the park or at the shopping center, talking loudly. This man seemed to be one of them. He asked how old my youngest was. I told him she was almost one. He asked about my older children and then told the kids to help me and be good to their baby sister. They smiled shyly. I distracted (转移注意力) the baby with my keys and headed to the dairy (乳制品) area. The old man followed me with his small basket. He asked if I lived near the store and if I could give him a ride home. I looked at his things:two bananas, some cereal, some carrots, and a package of discount chicken. His suit coat was old and worn-out, but his pants and shirt were neatly ironed (熨). I agreed to give him a ride. Almost immediately, I wondered if I had made a mistake. Had he fooled me with kind words? But then I thought about our own situation. We had just bought a small car so my husband could go to work. Before that, I had been stuck at home all week. Now that I had a car, it seemed right to help someone else. The man was too old to be a threat. I finished my shopping and he helped me load the bags into the back of my small car. Then I had him sit in the passenger seat and started driving in the direction he pointed to. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 To my surprise, the old man turned out to be kind and talkative. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After we stopped at his house, the old man reached into his worn wallet. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高一英语 注意事项: 1. 1. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. D 7. Voice and Emotion Matter in Conversation 【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. G. (运用how引导的宾语从句) 第二节(满分25分) 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 I met an elderly man by the discount meat area. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 To my surprise, the old man turned out to be kind and talkative. We talked all the way. He told me that he was a retired teacher, who moved to this community just two months ago. Because of the inconvenient transportation, he hadn’t been out since he moved here. He also said he was delighted to take a ride with me and get to know so many new things happening in the world. After we stopped at his house, the old man reached into his worn wallet. He took out some crumpled bills and attempted to give them to me. I was totally shocked. “I just lent you a hand,” I said. “I’m grateful to you for your help,” he insisted. I smiled and accepted his offer. The next day, I was stopped by the old man again. “I really want to thank you again,” he said. “What can I do for you?” I smiled, “Nothing, thanks.” “I just want to help more people with my money,” he said. I was moved to tears. 词汇激活 行为类 ① 微笑:smile/beam ② 帮助:help/aid 情绪类 ① 快乐的:delighted/pleased ② 感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】He told me that he was a retired teacher, who moved to this community just two months ago.(运用了that引导的宾语从句和who引导的非限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】He also said he was delighted to take a ride with me and get to know so many new things happening in the world.(运用了省略that的宾语从句和现在分词短语happening in the world作后置定语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
