Phil White has just returned from an 18,000-mile,around-the-world bicycle trip.White had two
reasons for making this epic journey.First of all,he wanted to use the trip to raise money for charity,
which he did.He raised f 70,000 for the British charity,Oxfam.White's second reason for making
the trip was to break the world record and become the fastest person to cycle around the world. He is
still waiting to find out if he has broken the record or not.
White set off from Trafalgar Square,in London,on 19th June 2004 and was back 299 days later.
He spent more than 1,300 hours in the saddle(车座)and destroyed four sets of tyres(轮胎)and three
bike chains. He had the adventure of his life crossing Europe, the Middle East,India,Asia,Australia,
New Zealand and the Americas.Amazingly,he did all of this with absolutely no support team.No
jeep carrying food,water and medicine.No doctor.Nothing!Just a bike and a very,very long road.
The journey was lonely and desperate at times. He also had to fight his way across deserts,
through jungles and over mountains. He cycled through heavy rains and temperatures of up to 45
degrees, all to help people in need. There were other dangers along the road.In Iran,he was chased by
armed robbers and was lucky to escape with his life and the little money he had.The worst thing that
happened to him was having to cycle into a headwind on a road that crosses the south of Australia.
For 1,000 kilometres he battled against the wind that was constantly pushing him. This part of the trip
was slow, hard work and depressing, but he made it in the end.Now Mr.White is back and intends to
write a book about his adventures.

Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and
daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But,according to a new study,we
should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.
Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now,the
new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as
$172,000 a year.
The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do,as well as the hours they are working,to
determine the figure. This would make their yearly income $30,000 more than the Prime Minister
earns
By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which
would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers
with children under 18,it found that,on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and
finished at around 11pm.
To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour,it suggested some of the roles
that mums could take on,including housekeeper,part-time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer.
Being a part-time lawyer,at 48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the"mum jobs",
with psychologist(心理学家)a close second..
It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional demand
as the hardest thing about motherhood.
Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out
with friends.
The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother's Day.The emotional,
physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never-ending,but children are also
sources of great joy and happiness.Investing()in time for parenting and raising relationships is
money well spent.
28.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?
A.$30,000
B.$142,000.
C.$172,000
D.$202,000
共12页第5页
29.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from
A.emotional demand
B.low pay for work
C.heavy workload
D.lack of training
30.What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.Mothers'importance shows in family all year long.
B.The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.
C.Mothers'devotion to children can hardly be calculated.
D.Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.
31.What can we conclude from the study?
A.Mothers'working hours should be largely reduced.
B.Mothers should balance their time for work and rest
C.Mothers'labour is of a higher value than it is realised.
D.Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.

From this week, the UK has introduced strict rules to protect children from junk food advertising.
Ads for 13 categories of processed foods and drinks, such as sugary soft drinks, crisps, and chocolates,
are banned online and can only air on TV after 9 p.m.
The reason is rising childhood obesity(肥胖).Our exclusive(独有的)report last week
highlighted doctors'calls for routine blood pressure testing in children, emphasizing the dangers of
obesity and the case for preventing it.The longer-term trend, both nationally and internationally,is
widely recognised as alarming.Since the UK's child measurement programme began 20 years ago,
obesity rates among primary-age children in England have climbed from 17.5%to 22.1%.
Obesity deepens social inequality, with rates in poverty-stricken areas twice as likely to be obese
as those in wealthy ones. The resulting health risks-type 2 diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular
diseases-add to the hardships of the disadvantaged. This concentration of harm is a key reason to
welcome the advertising restrictions.Like gambling or smoking, the uneven impact of unhealthy
processed foods on already-struggling households is among their most damaging effects.
共12页第6页
Children often lack the knowledge and maturity (to navigate decisions about fat, sugar,
and salt intake. For the UK government, narrowing the gaps that restrict the life chances of
disadvantaged children must always be a priority.
Public debate on obesity has increasingly focused on new weight-loss drugs, yet in the UK,these
are available only to a small group of severely obese children. This highlights the need to prioritize
(prevention and public health initiatives around food,as a healthy lifestyle involves
exercise and nutrition, not just body weight.
Charities like Sustain have criticized the concessions (made to industry giants, such as
allowing brand advertising as long as specific junk foods are not displayed.Their caution is justified
(合理的):last year saw record snack food sales, and billboard advertising-less controlled by
rules-has rocketed. But while the new rules will not end childhood obesity and should have been in
place sooner,as with other half measures, they are much better than none at all.
32.What is the main purpose of the new UK rules?
A.To shelter children from obesity risks.
B.To encourage people to break bad habits.
C.To limit junk food sales to evenings.
D.To enforce blood pressure testing in schools.
33.Why does the author mention gambling and smoking in paragraph 3?
A.To explain the causes of poverty.
B.To show they are addictive.
C.To stress junk foods'harm to the poor.
D.To list common bad habits for children.
34.What is the author's attitude toward the new advertising restrictions?
A.Critical.
B.Supportive.
C.Carefree.
D.Conservative.
35.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Childhood Obesity:The Growing Crisis
B.Health Inequality:The Widening Divide
C.Stricter Regulations:The Call for Action
D.Dealing with Obesity:UK's New Ad Rules

28.【解析】 细节理解题。根据第二段 the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as£172,000 a year. 现在,新的研究表明,如果他们的工作得到报酬,一年能挣172,000美元,和第三段 This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns. 这将使他们的年收入比首相多3万英镑。可知总理的工资应该是£172,000-£30,000=£142,000,故选B。

32.【解析】定位关键信息:根据题干中的"main purpose of the new UK rules",定位到文章第一段和第二段。第一段介绍英国出台新规禁止部分垃圾食品的线上广告,且电视广告仅能在晚9点后播放;第二段开头明确指出"The reason is rising childhood obesity(肥胖)"。
选项A"To shelter children from obesity risks"(保护儿童免受肥胖风险),符合新规出台的核心目的,与原文原因匹配。
选项B"To encourage people to break bad habits"(鼓励人们改掉坏习惯),原文未提及相关内容,属于无中生有。
33.【解析】定位关键信息:根据题干定位到第三段最后一句"like gambling or smoking, the uneven impact of unhealthy processed foods on already struggling households are among their most damaging effects"。

Dear Peter,
Delighted to hear from you and I’d like to share with you something about the physical exercise in our school.
As a landmark in our school, the stadium, with a blue roof, is located beside the playground, which provides an ideal place for students to take sports in bad weather. With enough space to exercise, we have a wide range of sports events to choose from, of which jogging, ping-pong, basketball as well as badminton enjoy great popularity. As for me, I take to basketball since it not only strengthens my body but also helps me get relaxation after a long time studying.
All in all, I sincerely invite you to come to our school and see for yourself.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Just then, I felt that someone picked me up. Still dizzy and weak, I heard a familiar voice encouraging me to keep going. It was Anoush, the friend I had angrily pushed away after our quarrel. Without saying a word about the past, he placed my arm over his shoulder, offering silent support. My legs still felt like jelly, but his steady presence gave me strength. Slowly, he guided me forward, matching my pace without complaint. As we moved forward together, memories of our years of training flashed through my mind and shame filled my heart. Holding onto him tightly, I gathered my remaining energy, determined not to let his effort go to waste.
When Anoush and I crossed the finish line, the audience at present applauded. The loud cheers echoed through the street, but what touched me most was the man beside me, who never left me behind, even when I had pushed him away. Turning to Anoush, I apologized for my rude behavior and thanked him for staying with me despite everything. He gave me a big hug in response. At that moment, I realized that friendship, like running, is not about speed but about staying together until the end. As we stood there, side by side, I felt a warmth stronger than any medal—the warmth of forgiveness and companionship regained.

Text 1
M: We’d better hurry, Jasmine. It’s 4:30 p. m. now.
W: Come on. Our train leaves at 7:30 p. m. It usually takes us an hour to get to the train station.
M: What a relief! I thought it would leave at 6:30p. m. Well, in that case, we can set off in an hour.
W:OK.
Text 2
W: What are you up to tonight, Andrew?
M: Nothing really. I was going to play tennis with Jerry, but he told me he had to attend a meeting. What’s up?
W: Would you like to go to the movies tonight?
M: Sure.
Text 3
M:I’m really nervous. Aren’t you curious about the result of the match?
W: Well, it’s okay if I don't get a place. I’ve done my best, anyhow.
M: I’m the opposite of you. I’m on pins and needles.
Text 4
W:I have to say the TV show is really dull. Shall we go for a walk in the park?
M: Hold on a minute. Let me finish doing these dishes first.
W: Sure, no rush. We can take our coats and enjoy the peace once you’re done.
Text 5
W: Is the little girl in the short video speaking Cantonese?
M: Yeah, she’s reciting the Cantonese version of an ancient poem.
W: She’s so cute! Share the video with me.
M: OK. It got 10,000 likes on TikTok. I’ve watched it five times on end.
Text 6
M: Judy, the blouse looks wonderful on you! The color goes with your trousers perfectly.
W: Thanks, Mark.
M: Well, the blouse certainly shows your good taste. It must have cost a lot.
W: Actually, no. I got it on sale at Star Mall. It was originally $150, but I got it for only $60.
M: That’s a fantastic deal! How did you manage to find such a great deal?
W: Oh, I always pay attention to their newsletters. They announce promotions ahead of time.
M: Wise move! I should start doing that, too.
Text 7
W: Bob, I heard you’ve been travelling a lot. What’s the longest flight you’ve been on?
M: My longest flight was from Istanbul to Bangkok. I had a stopover in Delhi. It took me about 16 hours in total. It was challenging to sit for so long, but I made it enjoyable with movies, healthy food, and some sleep.
W: Sounds exhausting! Do you have any tips for long flights?
M: Definitely! First, choose your airline carefully. For flights over 4 hours, make sure they offer comfortable seats, good meals and in-flight entertainment, like a TV screen. Also, ask for a blanket right after boarding to stay cozy.
W: Good advice! Anything else?
M: I think that taking two short flights, like two 5-hour ones, is better than one 10-hour flight. Breaking up the journey makes it easier to stretch and relax in between.
W: Thanks. I’ll keep them in mind for my next trip.
Text 8

M: A room with twin beds, please.
W: OK. Would you like to have a room with a view of the ocean?
M: Yes. What’s the rate for the room?
W: It’s $ 230 per night. Would you like to book one now?
M: Sure. My name is Charles Sanders. And do you accept credit cards?
W: Yes. Could you leave a phone number where you can be contacted?
Text 9
W: John, I’ve noticed you always bury yourself in a book. What’s your favorite type of book?
M: Definitely fantasy novels. They transport me to different worlds and let my imagination fly.
W: Sounds amazing! How did you get into reading?
M: I read my first novel in third grade when I was eight years old. I picked up Harry Potter and fell in love with magical adventures.
W: What other types of books do you read?
M: I'm a big fan of historical fiction, too. I also like Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery novels.
W: Wow, those are some great choices! Do you have a reading goal?
M: Yeah. I'd love to read a hundred books by the time I finish high school. I’ve already finished almost half of them!
W: Impressive! How do you find time to read so much?
M: I make time to read whenever possible—before bedtime, during lunch breaks, basically any spare moment.
W: It must be rewarding to learn from books.
M: Absolutely! They’ve taught me about different cultures and history, and even shaped my perspective on life.
Text 10
W: Welcome to the cooking demonstration. Tonight, I’m going to introduce the art of Thai fruit carving. When it comes to Thai fruits, they're quite often transformed into a piece of art. I really hope tonight’s talk will open the door to a new culture for you. Thailand is known for its rich culture and traditions, and one of the most fascinating aspects of Thai culture is the art of fruit carving. This ancient art form dates back to the 14th century, and it has been passed down from generation to generation. Fruit carving is practiced in both Thailand and Japan, but the earliest known fruit carving was found in China. Fruits were carved both for decorative purposes and for the food to look more appealing before it was eaten. Thai fruit carving is not only a beautiful art form, but it is also a way to celebrate the beauty and abundance of nature. Now, if you just pick up the cucumber in front of you and one of the medium-sized knives, I’ll show you how to turn that boring cucumber into a beautiful leaf.
