The sixth planet was ten times larger than the last one. There the little prince met an old gentleman who was writing a big book.
“What is that big book?” said the little prince. “What are you doing?”
“I am a geographer,” the old gentleman said to him. “And I am writing about all the seas, mountains and deserts.”
“That is interesting,” said the little prince. “So could you tell me something about your planet?”
“I couldn’t tell you,” said the geographer.
“But you are a geographer!”
“Exactly,” the geographer said. “But I am not an explorer. We don’t have any explorers here. I don’t go out to count the seas, mountains and deserts. Instead, I receive explorers from other planets in my study. I ask them questions, and I write down their answers.”
The geographer’s eyes suddenly shone with excitement.
“But you… you come from far away! You are an explorer! You shall describe your planet to me!”
“Oh, where I live,” said the little prince, “it is all so small. I have a flower on my planet.”
“We do not record flowers,” said the geographer.
“Why is that? The flower is the most beautiful thing on my planet”
“We do not record them,” said the geographer, “because they are ephemeral.”
“What does that mean… ‘ephemeral’?”
“Geographies,” said the geographer, “are the books about eternal things. The thing that matters to us is the mountain. It doesn’t change. But your flower is different. It will not last long. It is ephemeral.”
“My flower is ephemeral,” the little prince said to himself, “and I have left her on my planet, all alone!”
But he took courage and asked, “What place would you advise me to visit now?”
“The planet Earth,” replied the geographer. “I promise you will like it.” And the little prince went away, thinking of his flower.

Twenty years after her elimination (淘汰) from American Idol, Jennifer Hudson is reaching new heights in her career. Her talk show The Jennifer Hudson Show, which started in 2022, was renewed for a third season earlier this year.
Hudson said she has come a long way since her Idol days, but the passion (激情) she had when she first started remains. “I feel lucky to do many things because I do them with passion,” she said. “When I was eliminated from ‘American Idol’, I thought, ‘Well, you still have your talent and as long as you keep at it, success will finally come.’”
That talent led her to receive an Oscar (2007), a Grammy (2008), an Emmy (2020) and a Tony (2022) — making her one of the few EGOT award winners in Hollywood. Her talk show has received four Daytime Emmy Award nominations. It also received other awards, including this year’s NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Talk Series.
As her third season begins, Hudson is adding her talented voice in a new part with country music singer Chris Stapleton. “I love bringing together my roles with music, and you know, just being a host and having artists that I love and admire come on the show, and Chris Stapleton is one of my favorites,” she said.
In addition to singing and hosting, Hudson is playing a new role in the new movie Breathe. The 42-year-old actress said her new role challenged her as an actress, as it was her first action film, and she got to do some of her own stunt performances.
Besides all of this, Hudson is balancing raising her son, David, who gave her a touching Mother’s Day surprise with a heartfelt letter. “I had no idea that he was writing me a Mother’s Day letter. It was so sweet,” she said.

Have you ever felt a sudden sense of freedom when a class gets cancelled? Even it is only an hour, receiving a message that a class has been cancelled can feel like an unexpected gift. But why does this happen? Researchers believe that unexpectedly getting time back changes how we think about time, which then influences how we choose to spend it.
Gabriela Tonietto, a researcher at Rutgers University, explored this question in a study published in a research journal. Tonietto studies time management and how people act when they have a lot of things to do. Her earlier research looked at problems such as having too many tasks and the feeling that people never seem to have enough time. In the new study, Tonietto and her team focused on what happens when people suddenly gain free time. They call this “windfall time”. The research team carried out seven surveys with more than 2,300 people from universities and online platforms.
The first four surveys asked people to compare unexpected free time, such as a cancelled class, with planned free time. The results showed that a gained hour often feels longer than a normal free hour. According to the researchers, this happens because people compare the gained time with the thought of having no free time at all. This comparison makes the extra time feel more valuable.
The researchers also looked at how people spend this windfall time. In the remaining surveys, people reported what they did when they suddenly had more time. Many people chose to do things that need more time than usual. For example, someone with an unexpected free hour might start a longer task or walk farther to get a snack instead of just getting a drink nearby.
Tonietto suggests that understanding how people see gained time may help schools create more changeable daily plans. However, when free time appears suddenly, people often choose to rest rather than put their attention on work.
42. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. By presenting a study result and expressing opinions.
B. By using a researcher’s words and offering suggestions.
C. By describing a common feeling and asking a question.
D. By giving background information and presenting a question.
43. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. The team did seven surveys with more than 2,300 people.
B. Gained time feels longer compared with no free time.
C. People often use windfall time to start longer tasks.
D. Schools may learn from how people see gained time.
44. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain a common feeling and people’s use of free time.
B. To teach people how to plan better classes every day.
C. To show that planned time is better than unexpected time.
D. To describe the daily life of a university researcher.
45. After Paragraph 5, what might the writer probably talk about next?
A. The best time of day to cancel a class.
B. The history of class planning in schools.
C. A way to make windfall time feel longer than it is.
D. A real-life example of a school using windfall time.

五、阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,计10分)
阅读短文,回答下面5个问题。(每题答案不超过10个词)
The first time I went to China was in 1996. After staying in Hong Kong for a few days, I moved to Beijing to study Chinese and later got a doctor’s degree. Since then, I have studied and worked in China for almost 30 years. So it is not surprising that every time I return to my hometown in northern Italy, my friends and relatives call me “the Chinese”.
How did I become “Chinese”? Someone once told me that I behave in a Chinese way. For example, in Chinese tradition, it is considered good manners not to offer direct criticism (批评), but to care about how the other person feels. While Italians are quick to say a loud and clear “no”, I now find that quite rude. Having got used to the Chinese indirect communication, I prefer to say “Maybe you are busy?” instead of refusing directly.
I also prefer to eat in a “Chinese” way. It is not just about the food, but about the feeling of getting together. I feel slightly uncomfortable when everyone orders their own food instead of sharing dishes in the middle of the table. In China, sharing a meal is very important for building strong relationships and creating a warm feeling.
Another way I have changed is how I behave in groups. In China, before a group photo, people can spend minutes gently pushing others to stand in the middle while they step aside.
Moreover, the first time I gave red packets to my Italian nieces, they did not understand at all. But now they have learned what these red packets represent, and always look forward to receiving them during festivals.
I study Confucianism and see that its wisdom is valued in Italy as well. Like many other foreigners, I will always be a “laowai” in China, but in Italy, I am proudly “the Chinese”.
56. Why is the writer called “the Chinese” in Italy?

57. How does the writer say “no” to others now?

58. Why do the writer’s Italian nieces now look forward to red packets??

Version:
Many Hands Make Light Work
“Many hands make light work” is a well-known saying that carries great wisdom. It means working together can make tasks easier and achieve better results than working alone.
Last year, our class joined a school cleaning competition. The task was to clean the large playground and plant flowers. At first, we felt overwhelmed. But then we divided the work: some swept the ground, others carried weeds, and the rest prepared the flower seeds. Working together, we finished the job quickly and won the first prize.
From this experience, I have learned that teamwork not only saves time but also builds trust and friendship. Each person’s role matters, and combining our strengths can overcome any challenge. As the saying goes, together we stand, and together we succeed. (113words)
