(01403)642135 B Thinking about my time in France, I noticed quite a few differences between the French and the English. The first example is about the French language. In French, there are two ways to say ‘you’: ‘tu’ is the informal(不正规的) form, while ‘vous’ is the formal form. When I learnt French, I was taught to call everyone ‘vous’ unless they were my family or a friend. So I was surprised that everyone in France used the informal ‘tu’ all the time. School children used ‘tu’ with their teachers as well as the head teacher. Even strangers I met in the street would call me ‘tu’, and sometimes ‘tu’ was written on street signs. But I continued to use ‘vous’ because I didn’t want people to think I was being impolite. To be honest, I’m thankful that in English we don’t have to worry about these things! As you might know, school children in the UK traditionally wear school uniforms but in France pupils do not wear uniforms. It was a culture shock for me to see children wearing Spiderman T-shirts and baggy blue jeans while in the classroom. The final difference was the relaxed attitude at school. Teachers were never in a hurry, and the children and teachers were given long rests and much time to eat their lunch. While in the UK, school day might seem highly pressured (有压力的). The UK and France are only separated by a small channel of the sea, but there are many differences between the two cultures! Anyway, I cannot deny (否认) what a great chance it was to live and work in another country. 44. Which of the following is NOT a culture shock to the writer? A. It takes French students much time to eat lunch. B. French students use ‘tu’ with their head teacher. C. Students in France wear different clothes at school. D. Teachers and students in the UK seem highly pressured. 45. What might the writer say to his friends when he goes back to the UK? A. It’s very fantastic to stay in France. B. People in France are more polite than us. C. The French culture is just the same as ours. D. It’s more difficult to learn French in France. 46. What is the best title of the passage? A. Life in France B. Troubles in France C. Cultural Differences D. Different Languages C ①Have you ever noticed you feel better and happier after helping someone else? Volunteering isn’t just great for the people you support, it can boost your well-being too. Millions of people around the country volunteer every year, and there are lots of ways you can join them, including raising money for charity, helping in your local community garden or park, or even carrying a neighbour’s shopping home. The theme for this year’s Volunteers’ Week is Celebrate and Inspire which highlights all the different people who take part in volunteer activities and the many ways they do volunteer work. ③According to Susan Albers, a psychologist (an expert in thoughts and feelings), volunteering has been shown to reduce stress and make you feel better about your life. This is because being kind and doing things for other people activate(激活) the reward part of the brain and release(释放) feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin(多巴胺和血清素). ______, such as feeling part of a community, making friends and learning skills. ④There are lots of ways you can volunteer. A. ① / ②③④ B. ①② / ③ / ④ C. ① / ②③ / ④ D. ①② / ③④ D I lived, up to the time of the illness that took away my sight and hearing, in a tiny house made up of a large square room and a small one. My father built such a house when he married my mother. It was completely covered with climbing roses, vines and honeysuckles. It was the favourite place of humming—birds and bees. It was called “Ivy Green” because the house and the trees and fences were covered with beautiful English ivy. Its old-fashioned garden was the paradise(乐园) of my childhood. These happy days did not last long. One brief spring with wonderful songs, one summer rich in fruit and roses, one autumn of gold and red flowers, all left their gifts at the feet of a cheerful child. Then, in the cold month of an early spring, came the illness which closed my eyes and ears. It hurt my stomach and brain terribly, and the doctor thought I could not live on. Early one morning, however, the fever left me as suddenly as it had come. There was great joy in the family that morning, but no one, not even the doctor, knew that I should never see or hear again. I cannot remember what happened during the first months after my illness. I only know that I sat on my mother’s legs or touched her dress as she went about her housework. Soon I felt the need of some communication with others and began to make simple signs. A shake of the head meant “No” and a nod, “Yes”, a pull meant “Come” and a push, “Go”, Indeed, I was thankful to her loving wisdom all that was bright and good in my long night. Slowly, I got used to the silence and darkness around me and forgot that it had ever been different, until she came—my teacher—who was to set my spirit free. But during the first nineteen months of my life, I had caught glimpses(一瞥) of broad, green fields, a bright sky, trees and flowers which the darkness that followed could not totally be swept out. 51. According to the passage, the ______ was the writer’s favourite place when she was very young. A. large room B. small room C. garden D. field 52. When did the writer lose her eyesight and hearing? A. In a cold winter. B. At 19 months old. C. In a late autumn. D. At 1 month old. 53. Who helped the writer most during the first months after her illness? A. The doctor. B. Her father. C. Her mother. D. Her teacher. 54. According to the passage, what is the right order of the following sentences? ①I caught glimpses of broad, green fields and a bright sky. ②A teacher came into my life. ③My stomach and brain were badly hurt. ④I got used to the life without sounds and light. A. ④③①② B. ④③②① C. ③②④① D. ①③④② 55. What can be the best title of the passage? A. A serious illness. B. A great mother. C. A special childhood. D. They were all extremely clever, brilliant and creative—and they all had dyslexia. Today, around six million people in the UK have some degree of dyslexia. Yet many people don’t understand the condition or even aren’t aware that they have it. Dyslexia Awareness Week (DAW) aims to change that. Starting on 3 October, dyslexia charities across the country will be encouraging conversations about it, giving people advice and support. What is dyslexia? Dyslexia is not an illness or a disease. It is a condition that influences the way a person learns. It doesn’t mean that person isn’t smart. It just means their brain works a little differently. Just like people have different skin, hair and eye colours, the way our brains see the world and deal with information can be different too. This is called neurodiversity. How does dyslexia influence people? Dyslexia affects people differently. Each person has a unique experience. Some people may have problems with reading, writing and spelling. For example, a person with dyslexia might write the word “pests” as “pets” because their brain confuses the order of letters. They might find it difficult to match letters to sounds or to remember how to spell words. How might the condition influence daily life? Dyslexia isn’t just about reading, spelling and writing. It can influence concentration(专注力), coordination(协调性) and memory, which can make everyday life tricky. Dyslexic people might find it hard to copy down lots of notes from a board or to organize written work. They may find it tough to follow lots of instructions or rules when playing a game. However, dyslexia can be discovered by special tests. This is the important first step for people getting the help and support they might need. What are the positives of having dyslexia? People diagnosed(诊断) with dyslexia might worry how others see them, but thinking differently can be a superpower. Many people with dyslexia often have strong logical skills and great imaginative ideas. They can be good at spotting patterns and solving problems. They can be super creative too—there are many authors, actors and inventors from every corner of the world who thrive with the condition. Dyslexia is nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. It’s part of you. The Dyslexia Week Introduction ●Many people are diagnosed as dyslexia, including some successful ones in 71_____. ●Many of them are not clear about it or don’t 72 _____their own conditions. ●The Dyslexia Week starting on 3 October will work to change it, helping and 73_____ people with dyslexia.
