Shadow play (皮影戏) is an ancient Chinese art form. It uses flat puppets made of leather or paper. Behind a white screen, performers move the puppets and tell stories with music and singing.
In 2025, a group of young artists in Lianyungang started a “Modern Shadow Play” project. They didn’t just perform old stories like Journey to the West. They created new plays about environmental protection, space exploration, and even online bullying.
“Many young people think shadow play is old and boring,” said Li Yue, 24, the project leader. “We want to show them it can be cool and meaningful.”
The team used LED lights and digital backgrounds to make the shadows more colorful. They also invited teenagers to write scripts. A 15-year-old girl wrote a play about saving the ocean, which became very popular online.
The project has given over 50 shows in schools and communities. An 80-year-old shadow play master, Mr. Zhang, said, “I was worried this art would die. But now I see hope. Young people are giving it new life.”

Have you ever heard of “forest bathing”? It doesn’t mean taking a bath in the woods. It is a Japanese practice called Shinrinyoku, which means spending time slowly walking in a forest and using all your senses to connect with nature.
Scientists have found that forest bathing can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and improve mood. A study in 2025 showed that people who spent two hours in a forest once a week had stronger immune systems after three months.
But why? Trees release chemicals called phytoncides (植物杀菌素). When people breathe them in, their bodies increase natural killer cells — a type of white blood cell that fights viruses and even cancer.
Forest bathing is different from hiking or running. There is no goal, no fitness tracking. You just walk slowly, look at the leaves, listen to birds, touch the tree bark, and smell the earth. Some doctors in Japan and South Korea now “prescribe” forest bathing to patients with anxiety or high blood pressure.
China has also started forest therapy bases in places like Zhejiang and Sichuan. However, many forests are far from cities, so not everyone can go easily. Some experts suggest creating small “nature corners” in parks or even using VR (虚拟现实) forests to bring the benefits to city people.
38. What is “forest bathing”?
A. Washing yourself with forest water.
B. Taking a bath in a wooden tub.
C. Walking slowly in a forest to relax.
D. Running fast through the woods.
39. How does forest bathing help the immune system?
A. By making people exercise more.
B. By breathing in chemicals from trees.
C. By eating special forest fruits.
D. By drinking tree sap.
40. What is the problem with forest bathing in China?
A. It is too expensive.
B. It doesn’t work for Chinese people.
C. Many forests are too far from cities.
D. Doctors don’t believe in it.
41. What might the writer talk about next after the last paragraph?
A. How to build VR forests in cities.

D. The best shoes for hiking.

Shadow play (皮影戏) is an ancient Chinese art form. It uses flat puppets made of leather or paper. Behind a white screen, performers move the puppets and tell stories with music and singing.

D. The best shoes for hiking.
