Then the scientists showed 10 videos (视频) of dog tails to 100 volunteers (志愿者). Half of the videos showed happy tails, and half showed sad tails. 24 Some volunteers had never even owned a dog before!

36 But this is not a usual boat, and this is not a usual river. This is the famous Amphawa Floating Market. Here, there are hundreds of boats selling many things, such as colorful T-shirts, bags, paintings, and statues.
This floating market is one of many in Thailand. It’s 50 kilometers west of Bangkok. This means there are fewer tourists than those at the floating markets in the city. I am taking my time and slowly seeing everything in the market. 37
I am taking a tour down the river and through most of the market. 38 Most of the shops have a location on a boat as well as a store on the riverbank. The boat and the store are side by side.
There are lots of tourist attractions near the market. You can take a boat tour to see the fireflies or visit many traditional temples in the area.
The best part of the Amphawa Floating Market is the wonderful food. I am trying many of the fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as many types of cooked food. 39 Just look at all this fresh seafood. Wow!
The Amphawa Floating Market is only open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Sunday. The market is the most crowded between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.. 40

Passage 11
(2025七年级下·四川成都·期中)
Time flies when you play on your smartphone. But when you do the real business of work and study, one hour feels like a year. 51
It is because of something small and hard to see—dopamine. Dopamine is a chemical that makes people feel good. Our brains create it when we eat delicious food, after we exercise or when we feel cheered. 52 For example, checking your phone for a message leads to a 400% increase (增加) in dopamine.
53 This uncertainty, or “the magic of maybe”, makes the dopamine system active. But studying usually doesn’t provide such uncertainty. 54 When we read their comments, our brains are creating dopamine. To get more dopamine, we will continue checking our phones.
Can we change that? It’s said that apps can become less fun if we turn the screen colors to black and white. 55 You could also use what you’ve learned to make a difference to the real world. This may make knowledge much more interesting to learn.
A. But we usually don’t feel this when studying.
B. We get excited wondering if we have comments from our friends.
C. Why are we so interested in smartphones but easily bored with studying?
D. As for studying, you could check your progress weekly and then encourage yourself in it.
E. Compared (比较) with studying, playing on smartphones causes our brains to create more dopamine.
F. When looking through Weibo or Douyin, we don’t know what we’ll see next, or what comments we will get.
Passage 12
(2025七年级下·四川成都·期中)
Family rules are useful. They help your children to grow healthily. 56 But how to make family rules? Let me help you.
Have a family meeting. Having a family meeting is important. 57 And you can ask what you think is good family rule. Then they are happy to follow the rules.
For every “Don’t”, give a “Do”. It doesn’t work to tell children not to do something. 58 For example, “Do your homework first; don’t watch TV before finishing your homework. ”
Keep the family rules simple (简单的). Children don’t know what “Be good” means (意思是). But they do know what “Use friendly word.” means. 59 You need to keep the family rules to 5-7 rules.
Write down the family rules. You must write down all the family rules. When family members see them, they know that they have to follow the rules.
Every family needs family rules. 60 So now make your own family rules.
