When I was 7 and Stevie was 6, our parents taught us how to play chess and other games. Playing games was our life back then. Stevie and I were very competitive (好胜的) in everything.
We got older and better so our games were more serious, but also more exciting. The strange thing is that I enjoyed the games very much and was happy for my brother when he won. But then, I did not feel right and became less confident than before.
When I was 10 years old, I wanted to be successful at my talents. One day, I thought I had to find something Stevie couldn’t do. Before long, I got Jimmy Nelson’s record on “How to Become a Ventriloquist (腹语师)” and I practiced every day. Ater summer vacation, I did my first show for my class. The show was welcomed. Then I did a lot of shows to practice my new skill.
Learning ventriloquism (腹语,口技) wasn’t easy. The difficult part was developing the voice, because at first, it was soft and hard to hear. I memorized the routines and performed more. With time, I got better responses. The loud laughter continued along with the applause (掌声).
Four years later, my mother bought a professional ventriloquial figure, which I named Freddie O’ Sullivan. He was very human-like with, big eyes. Treating Freddie like a real person helped improve my performance. In college, Freddie was well known. Over the years, I won many talent prizes.
One time, an old man who had watched my show with his family looked at Freddie carefully and asked him where he got his trousers. ★ I didn’t know what was going on until I was told later that the gentleman hadn’t spoken for 20 years.

Believe it or not, we know more about space than we do about the deep ocean. Since 1969. a total of 12 people have walked on the moon, but only three have dived (潜水) to the Mariana Trench’s deepest point. As we all know, it’s very challenging to explore Qomolangma, the Sahara Desert, and the Amazon Rainforest. However, the Mariana Trench’s conditions and depth of about 11, 000 meters make it the most difficult to explore. Even more shocking-Although the ocean covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface, 95% of it is unexplored.
Historically, people explored the ocean just to find ways to travel around the world or to start new trades. Also, to early people, the ocean was a scary place, full of dangerous creatures. They thought that, the deep ocean was dark and lifeless. Furthermore, cold temperatures and huge water pressure prevented ocean exploration, too. Diving into the Mariana Trench, for example, would make you feel like having 50 jumbo jets (巨型喷气式飞机) pressing down on you.
However, the ocean influences everyone in lots of things, from the air we breathe, the food we cat, transportation, medicine, to weather and climate. And the deep ocean holds a huge amount of oil, gas and so on. Therefore, ocean exploration has always been a big dream of humans in modern times.
In recent years, thanks to new technology like improved submarines (潜艇), robots and cameras, humans have been able to explore the deeper sea. On November 17th, 2024, China made a huge breakthrough in deep-sea exploration with its “Mengxiang” ship. With the world’s top drilling system (钻探系统), this amazing ship can reach up to 11, 000 meters below the sea surface, allowing scientists to study and learn more about the earth.
The “Mengxiang” ship is the pride of our nation, pushing the limits of what we know and can achieve. Let’s see how much further China can go in ocean exploration in the future!
26. Which picture may best show the Mariana Trench?
A. B. C. D.

One day, I heard an American boy say to a Chinese girl student, “You speak very good English.” But the girl answered, “No, no. My English is very poor.” The foreigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had not made himself understood or the girl had not heard him clearly, he said, “Yes, indeed, you speak very well.” But the girl still kept saying, “No.” In the end the American boy could not understand and didn’t know what to say.
What’s wrong with the girl’s answer? She didn’t accept a compliment (恭维) in the same way as the American people do. She should answer, “Thank you” instead of “No”. She really understood what the American boy had said, but she thought she should be modest (谦虚). In the West, people will feel proud and confident when they are praised. So if someone says the dishes you have cooked are very delicious, you should say, “Thank you.”
In our country we think being modest is a virtue (美德) and being proud is a bad thing, but in my opinion, being confident does not mean being proud, so sometimes you should be confident instead of being modest.
If you are modest and say, “No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well” while working in a Western country, the others may think that you really cannot do it. If you often say “No”, you will certainly be looked down upon by others. When asking for a job, if someone says something like “Yes, I can certainly do it” instead of “Let me have a try”, he or she will expect to get it. So in the west, you should be brave to show your self-confidence.
31. Why did the girl answer “No, no” again and again according to the first paragraph?
A. The foreigner couldn’t make himself understood.
B. The girl couldn’t hear the foreigner clearly.
C. The girl is modest.
D. The girl is proud.
32. What will they say when someone praises the American people?
A. Certainly. B. Thank you. C. Don’t say that. D. The same to you.
33. In China, we think being proud is ________.
A. a virtue B. a bad thing C. being confident D. being modest
34. In a Western country, when asking for a job, you should say “________”.
A. Yes, I can do it well. B. Let me have a try. C. No, I’m afraid I can’t do it well. D. Maybe I can do it.
35. The passage is mainly about ________.
A. how to learn English well
B. what to say between the people in Western countries
C. how to praise someone
D. the differences in praise between Western and Chinese cultures

四、读写结合(共两节,满分 25 分)
第一节 任务型阅读(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
Sayings are used every day. You may ask an unhappy friend why she’s “feeling blue”. If you’ve done only a small part of a big job, you might call it “a drop (滴) in the bucket (桶)”. These sayings don’t mean exactly what the words say. But it’s easy to tell why we use them. Blue is a cool, quiet color. So it’s a good word for “sad”. A bucket holds too many drops of water to count. So just one drop is very little.
Other sayings are more difficult to understand. When you are about to go to bed, you are going to “hit the hay (干草)”. This saying does not make much sense unless you know where it came from. It was first used in the 1930s. At that time, many Americans were out of work. Some went from place to place, looking for jobs. At night they were very tired. They often made a bed of hay in a field or barn (谷仓). As soon as their heads “hit the hay”, they fell asleep.
Here is another saying. When you are sick, you might say you are “under the weather”. But why? This saying is more than 200 years old. It began in the days when many people went from place to place by boat. When storm winds rocked the boat, people often felt sick. The boat was sailing (航行) “under the weather”.
Young kids may find old sayings like these hard to understand, and old people may also have difficulty understanding new sayings. That’s why a grandma might not know what you mean by saying “give me five”. She might think you’re “off your rocker” which means “out of your mind”. It seems that the sayings are also changing with the development of living conditions.

________
Recently, US scientists created the first “protocells” (原始细胞) on Earth about 3,800 million years ago. At first, the protocells only merged (融合) with each other, so evolution (进化) couldn’t take place. However, when the scientists added water like the rain on Earth 4 billion years ago, a “wall” formed around each protocell, keeping them separated and causing evolution to happen.
Mosquitoes “seeing” humans
Scientists recently tested how well mosquitoes (蚊子) could feel heat, odor (气体) and CO2. The results showed that though mosquitoes depend on all these to find hosts, they are more interested in heat that matches the temperature of human. Wearing big clothes can help us “hide” our body heat and prevent mosquitoes from harming us.
Venom treating a disease
One of the most deadly marine snails (海螺) can give off a kind of venom (毒液). It can make their “food” still in seconds. However, scientists recently discovered something in the venom that may help save lives. When separated from the venom, it can control blood sugar. The scientists think it may be able to help treat a disease that about 422 million people suffer from around the world.

Thanks to my brother, I created a lifetime with Freddie.
