Live a more meaningful life
Dear teachers and classmates, I am Li Hua. We know everyone wants to live a more meaningful life. Here are my ideas.
First, we should take good care of ourselves. We need to stay healthy by doing exercise and keeping a good mood. For example, I run every morning. Also, we should have wide interests and set high goals. I enjoy reading and painting, and I plan to become an engineer in the future.
Second, we should do something good for others. It is important to be kind and responsible. We can help classmates with their studies or care for our parents at home. Besides, we should be thankful and learn to share. I always thank my teachers and share my happiness with friends.
If we care for both ourselves and others, our life will be more colorful and meaningful.
Thank you!

Among all traditional Chinese dragon dances, the Tongliang Fire Dragon Dance is one of the most amazing. It appeared in the Ming Dynasty and became extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty. Every year, as part of traditional Chinese culture, the dragon dance is used to pray for peace and good luck for the new year. According to local beliefs, the Fire Dragon Dance also has the power of driving away disasters and offering wishes for the local community.
The performance itself is truly breathtaking. First, the iron is heated to 1,600℃ in eight ovens placed in a circle. Sixteen shirtless men spray the liquid iron into the air, creating beautiful flower-like flames. At the same time, fireworks hidden in the bodies of two golden dragons are lighted. Then you can see fireworks fly from the dragons as 20 shirtless men hold the dragons, making them fly up and down through seas of fire. Along with music, the two fire dragons dance around to offer New Year wishes.
The Tongliang Fire Dragon Dance was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) in 2006 and has become one of Chongqing’s cultural icons. It is also known as “China’s No.1 Dragon Dance”. It has not only shone at home but also abroad. It has taken part in major national events such as the 1984, 1999 and 2009 National Day celebrations, as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Moreover, it has visited more than 20 countries including Britain, France and Japan to spread Chinese culture.

①Birds may not have large brains, but some are surprisingly clever. A study reported that Cooper’s hawks (鹰) could understand human traffic rules and use them to get food more easily.
②The study was led by an animal expert Vladimir Dinets. Several years ago, he noticed something special while watching a hawk near a busy street. When cars stopped for a red light, the hawk would fly low over the cars. It used the cars as cover to get close to small birds. Then it would quickly catch its food before the light turned green.
③Dinets kept watching and found that the hawk did this again and again. It knew exactly when to wait for red lights and when to move. This is the first time scientists have discovered a bird that seems to understand traffic lights. Other wild birds may use buildings or trees to hide, but none have been seen using traffic rules.
④Cooper’s hawks live in many cities and towns across the United States. They are fast and feed mainly on small birds. As they have moved closer to humans, they have learned new ways to catch food. Living in cities has changed their hunting habits, and they have become good at using human environments to help themselves. The study shows that animals can get used to city life in amazing ways. But city life also brings risks, such as cars, tall buildings, and fewer natural places to live.
⑤As we can see, by learning more about these clever hawks, we can make cities safer and friendlier for wildlife. Next time you are waiting at a traffic light, look carefully into the trees. You might see a Cooper’s hawk waiting too — not to cross the road, but to catch its next meal.
33. What did the study find about Cooper’s hawks?
A. They can fly faster than any other bird.
B. They live in natural forests and mountains.
C. They hide in tall buildings to catch small birds.
D. They use traffic lights and cars to help catch food.
34. Which word has the same meaning as the underlined word “cover” in paragraph 2?
A. She covered her face with hands.
B. The cover of the book is really fantastic.
C. This lesson covers many important words.
D. We stayed behind the rocks for good cover.
35. Which of the following are risks of city life for Cooper’s hawks according to the passage?
① Traffic lights. ② Cars and tall buildings.
③ Other wild birds. ④ Not enough natural living places.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ②④ D. ③④
36. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
At Denver, crowds of passengers crowded onto the eastbound B. & M. Express train. In one carriage, a beautiful young woman called Miss Fairchild sat comfortably — she was an experienced traveler with all the finest luxuries.
Soon, two young men got on and walked down the passage. One was good-looking, with a bold and open manner; the other was heavy-built, roughly dressed and looked very glum. The two men were handcuffed(用手铐铐住) together. The only empty seat available was opposite Miss Fairchild, so they sat down there.
At first, Miss Fairchild looked at them with disinterest. Then she recognized the younger man, smiled warmly and held out her gloved hand. “Well, Mr. Easton,” she said, “Aren’t you going to greet an old friend?”
Mr. Easton was surprised. He shook her hand with his left hand, smiling and saying, “Please forgive my other hand — it’s busy right now.” He lifted his right hand, which was handcuffed to the older man’s left hand. Miss Fairchild’s happy expression turned to confused shock.
Before Easton could speak, the older man cut in. “Excuse me for talking, miss. I see you know this marshal(法警) here. He’s taking me to Leavenworth Prison — I got seven years for counterfeiting (伪造) money. Could you ask him to put in a good word for me when we arrive? It will make things easier for me.”
Miss Fairchild’s color came back. “So you’re a marshal now!” she said to Easton. Easton explained calmly that he had to take the job after getting into money trouble back in Washington. Miss Fairchild was happy for him, saying she loved the West and his new life as a brave lawman.
When the two men left to go to the restroom, two passengers sitting nearby talked about what they had seen. One said, “That marshal is a really good guy.” The other said he was very young to be a marshal. The first passenger laughed, “Didn’t you get the trick? Have you ever seen a marshal handcuff a prisoner to his own right hand?”
—— Adapted from Hearts and Hands
37. Why did Mr. Easton shake Miss Fairchild’s hand with his left hand?
A. His right hand was hurt and couldn’t move.
B. His right hand was handcuffed to the older man.
C. He was used to greeting others with his left hand.
D. He wanted to show respect to Miss Fairchild.
38. Which of the following is the correct order of the events?
① Miss Fairchild recognized Mr. Easton and greeted him.
② The two men got on the train and sat opposite Miss Fairchild.
③ The older man explained that Easton was a marshal taking him to prison.
④ Miss Fairchild was shocked to see Easton’s handcuffed hand.
A. ②①④③ B. ②④①③ C. ①②③④ D. ①③②④
39. What kind of person is the older man according to the passage?
A. Rude and wild. B. Honest and kind.
C. Shy and nervous. D. Smart and quick-minded.
40. What can we infer from the last two passengers’ conversation?
A. Mr. Easton is indeed a young and brave marshal.
B. The two men will escape from the train soon.

Are you feeling that you have stopped improving even if you have been working hard?
You may get to a point where your progress slows down, or even stops completely. 41 But it does not mean there is no way out. The following tips can help you break through.
Start by setting clear goals. When progress slows, it often means you need a new direction. 42 This allows you to see your progress more clearly and helps you stay active when the learning feels difficult.
43 Sometimes learners cannot see their own limits. Teachers or experienced friends can offer fresh views and point out areas for improvement. With their help, you can keep from repeating the same mistakes and make progress again.
Changing the way you learn is another useful method. Doing the same thing repeatedly may lead to boredom and slow growth. Trying different ways — such as reading new books, practicing for 20 minutes each day, or studying with a friend — can bring back your interest. 44
A positive attitude matters just as much. A learning slowdown does not mean you have failed. 45 Believe in yourself and keep trying. With patience and effort, you can get past this stage and continue to improve.
In short, a learning slowdown is not the end of your progress. By using these methods, you can break through the difficulty and continue moving forward.
A. Asking others for advice is also helpful.
B. This can be a very hard time for anyone.
C. Try to learn from other people’s mistakes.
D. Instead, it can be a sign that you are about to grow.
E. These changes make learning more fun and effective.
F. One simple way is to break your big goal into smaller steps.
G. You should give yourself enough time to rest and relax.

Nowadays, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is becoming more and more popular in our lives. It’s like a smart helper that can do many things for us. It can talk to us, answer our questions, and even help us solve problems.
AI has a long history. The story of AI goes back to the 1950s. From then on, AI has gone through ups and downs. However, recent years have seen a rapid development, with breakthroughs in deep learning and large language models.
In schools, AI is becoming a useful tool. For example, if a student has trouble with math, AI can give personalized practice and explanations. It’s a great support for students.
At home, AI is very helpful, too. Smart home devices with AI can control lights, temperature, and even play music. All you have to do is ask, and AI will do it for you. It’s like having a magic helper that can make your life easier.
AI can also help us stay healthy. There are AI apps that can remind us to exercise, eat healthy food, and get enough sleep. For example, Huawei Health is an AI-powered app that offers personalized exercise plans and records physical activities, sleep habits, and overall health information.
However, some people worry about AI. They think AI might take over too many jobs or make wrong decisions. But many experts say that AI is here to help us, not take over. By understanding how AI works, we can make the most of its benefits while avoiding its possible problems.
