Henry, a thirteen-year-old boy, lived under a bridge in a village of potters (陶工) in ancient Korea. He shared his home with Crane-man, an old man with a lame (跛脚的) leg who had cared for him since he was a baby. Henry’s greatest wish was to learn how to make celadon (青瓷) pottery, the beautiful green ceramic (陶瓷作品) that made the village famous.
Every morning, Henry slipped away to watch Min, the most skilled potter in the village, work at his wheel. He stood hidden behind a bamboo screen, breathing in the smell of wet clay and listening to the sound of the spinning wheel. One day, Min caught him watching. “Go away!” the potter shouted, waving his hands. Henry bowed deeply and left, but he did not stop coming.
Weeks later, Henry made a mistake. He reached out to touch a newly finished celadon vase, and it slipped from his fingers, breaking into a dozen pieces. He froze, then went down to his knees to collect the pieces. “I will work for you without pay,” he said to Min, “until I have made up for the damage.”
Min stared at him for a long time. Finally, he nodded. For the next three months, Henry did the hardest work in the potter’s yard: chopping wood, carrying water, and digging clay. He never complained, even when Min refused to teach him a single thing about pottery. Crane-man noticed his tiredness and said, “Patience, Henry. The potter who rushes to shape the clay will only make an imperfect bowl.”
One evening, Min’s wife, Min Jeong, found Henry sitting by the oven, studying the way the fire changed the clay’s color. She smiled and handed him a warm bowl of rice. “He sees your heart,” she said quietly. Henry looked up, hope rising in his chest.

Lei Diansheng is a famous Chinese explorer and environmental protector. Born in 1963 in a small village near Harbin, he is called “the modern Xu Xiake” for his great journe... Before starting his trip, ne spent 10 years preparing — he did daily long runs to build up his strength and read many books on wild survival to learn how to deal with dangers.
From 1998 to 2008, Lei spent 10 years walking across China. He walked about 81,000 kilometers — almost twice around the equator (赤道)! During the trip, he wore out 52 pairs of shoes and lost 19 toenails. Once, he even had to eat snake meat to stay alive in the Shennongjia Forest. He faced many dangers, like mudslides (泥石流) and wolf attacks, but he never gave up. In 2008 he made history by walking alone through the Lop Nur Desert — a dry, dangerous place. He walked 1,100 kilometers in 31 days and became the first person to do that alone.
Lei didn’t just walk for fun. He visited all 56 ethnic groups (民族) in China, took 40,000 photos and wrote 3.2 million words in his notes. These notes became a “living record” of Chinese culture and nature. He also helped others during his trip — he gave money to poor students and joined in flood rescue (抗洪) work in Hunan Province.
Now, Lei still works for nature and education. He leads teams to study the environment, like protecting the source of the Yangtze River. Last year, he took a group of scientists to collect water samples there. He also works with traditional artists to turn his travel notes into art, so more people can learn about environmental protection. For students, he organizes hiking camps in Heilongjiang’s forests, where kids learn to identify wild plants and understand local ethnic cultures.
Lei’s story tells us: True adventure is not just about walking far. It’s about loving our land and protecting it.
33. Why is Lei called “the modern Xu Xiake”?

Do you know the five main senses we have? They are touch, taste, sight, smell and hearing. They are controlled by different parts of our brains. So we call the brain our built-in “BeiDou”. Brains help our bodies work smoothly. Try this: close your eyes and touch your nose. It’s easy, right? That’s because our brains can receive messages about where our body parts are. We can also stand on one leg without falling down. If we lose our balance, our brains will give us orders to fix it.
Brains are also life-saving heroes. Tests show that people see spider pictures faster than flowers. Some researchers also found that people react (作出反应) to loud noises faster than to a friend’s voice. Scientists aren’t completely sure about the reasons. Some suggest that this skill might come from ancient times. Our ancestors were often faced with predators. So they had to protect themselves from dangerous animals like spiders and tigers, or they would lose their lives. Until today, we still jump at sudden noises or shadows (影子) in dark rooms.
Here is more about the brain. Can you imagine seeing colors when you hear music, or tasting candy when you see the sunshine? It’s called sense mixing. Scientists think this happens when different senses intermingle (相互交织). Another fact is that temperature sometimes influences our senses. Some people can feel storms coming through with knee pain. So we often joke that we’re “human weather apps”. Also, our brains are able to make adjustments (调整) to some senses. If someone can’t see well, his hearing or touch might become stronger.
Though scientists have done much research on the brain, there’s still a lot to do. Have you ever wondered why some people are better at sports? What’s the secret to improving memory? Then it’s time for you to start your discovery journey.
37. What do the two examples in the first paragraph show?
A. Human brains are different. B. Brains help our bodies work well.
C. People have many living habits. D. Humans can touch their noses easily.
38. Which animal in the following is probably a “predator”?
A. A lion. B. A sheep. C. A deer. D. A butterfly.
39. According to paragraph 3, what might happen if your senses mix?
A. You can tie your shoes without looking.
B. You taste sweetness when seeing a rainbow.
C. You jump when someone shouts suddenly.
D. You feel pain in your knees before the rain comes.
40. What is the writing purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To improve people’s memory. B. To show the value of our brains.
C. To encourage brain studies. D. To admire scientists’ efforts.
第二节 阅读填空(5小题,每小题1分,满分5分)
Putting things off is something a lot of students are troubled with. Between schoolwork, after-school activities and everyday worries, there are too many things you have to deal with every day. 41 You might start falling behind and your grades might get lower.
One smart way to fight back is to break big tasks into tiny pieces. Huge projects can feel like a mountain. But if you cut them into smaller steps, it will make it less scary. 42 Just tell yourself, “Today, I’ll choose my topic and write a little. I’ll take care of more tomorrow.” step by step, it gets done.
The “work and rest” way is also a smart choice for being productive. Set a timer for 25 minutes-go all in, full attention. 43 Have some cookies. Walk around. Once you get going, it’s easier to keep it up.
44 Put away your MP3 player and any kind of toys. Find a quiet place where you won’t get interrupted (打扰) at all. The less noise, the better your brain can lock in.
And don’t forget to treat yourself. For example, listen to your favorite song, or watch an interesting TV program. These little things keep you going. 45 Finally, you are sure to see the payoff.
A. Then take a five-minute break.
B. Also, stay away from what pulls your attention.
C. For example, you’ve got to write a five-page paper.
D. But if you keep putting them off, they can snowball.
E. Change doesn’t happen overnight, so stick to it every day.
