The Amazing Trunks of African Elephants
African elephants are well-known for their long trunks. This special part is actually a long nose and a lip. For a large elephant, the trunk can be two meters long. They use their trunks to do many tasks each day. They use them to smell, and they also use them to drink. A big elephant can suck up (吮吸) 7.5 liters (升) of water through its trunk at one time!
Because the weather in Africa is often very hot, these animals use their trunks to keep cool. They spray (喷洒) water on their skin and then cover it with dust to keep it safe. The trunk is also a helpful tool for them. It can pick up a small leaf or pull down a large tree branch. In deep water, they use their trunks like tubes to breathe.
Elephants are social animals. They often touch trunks to greet each other. Sometimes, a baby elephant sucks its trunk to feel happy. These smart animals can live for 70 years, but people hunt them for ivory (象牙). We must work together to protect them.
1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?

D.People protect elephants very well.

Animals are our friends. They live in forests, rivers, mountains, and even in our cities. But today, many animals are in danger. Why is that?
One big reason is that people cut down too many trees. Forests are homes to animals like pandas, monkeys, and birds. When forests disappear (消失), animals lose their homes. Another reason is pollution (污染). Dirty water and air can make animals sick. Also, some people hunt animals for their fur, teeth, or meat. This is illegal (非法的) in many places, but it still happens.
How can we help protect animals? First, we can save paper and plant trees to protect forests. Second, we should keep our environment clean. Do not litter everywhere. Third, never buy things made from endangered (濒危的) animals, such as ivory. Finally, we can tell our friends and family about the importance of protecting animals.
You may think you are too young to help. But every small action matters. For example, you can feed birds in winter, or join a school club that helps animals. When we work together, we can make a big difference. Let’s be good friends to animals!
5.Why do animals lose their homes according to the passage?
A.Because people pollute the water and air.
B.Because people hunt animals for fur and teeth.
C.Because people cut down too many trees.
6.Which of the following is NOT a way to help protect animals?
A.Buying things made from endangered animals.
B.Keeping the environment clean.
C.Telling friends and family about animal protection.
7.What example does the passage give to show that even small actions matter?
A.Joining a school club that helps children.
B.Feeding birds in winter.
C.Planting trees in the forest.
8.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Animals can live in forests, rivers, and cities.
B.Many animals are in danger and we can help protect them.
C.Cutting down trees is bad for pandas and birds.
【答案】5.C 6.A 7.B 8.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了动物陷入生存危机,并提出了每个人可以通过节约用纸、保护环境、拒绝濒危动物制品等实际行动来保护动物。
【详解】5.根据第二段中“One big reason is that people cut down too many trees.”和“When forests disappear (消失), animals lose their homes.”
7.根据最后一段中“For example, you can feed birds in winter”可知,文中举例“冬天喂鸟”来说明小小行动也很重要。
8.通读全文可知,文章第一段指出许多动物处于危险中,第二段分析原因,第三、四段提出我们如何帮助保护动物并呼吁采取行动。B项“许多动物处于危险中,我们可以帮助保护它们”最能概括全文主旨。

Family rules are important. They help your children to know what is and isn’t OK in the family. But how can you make good family rules for your children?
When you make family rules, it’s good for you to let your children join in. When you talk about rules with them, they are more likely (更有可能) to follow them.
First, you need to tell your children what to do, not what not to do. For example, “Go to bed before 9:30 p.m.!” is good. “Don’t go to bed late!” isn’t.
Second, rules need to be clear (清晰的) for children to follow. For example, “Eat an egg every morning!” is good. “It’s important to eat well!” isn’t.
Also, it’s good for you to write down the rules to help children remember them. For little children, you can draw pictures to help them understand the rules.
Sometimes we need to change family rules. For example, when your children get older, you can make rules about helping with housework. When you change rules, it’s good to let your children join you in making changes to the rules.

There are many sayings about the weather. Let’s have a look.
A Chinese saying says, “The weather in June is like a baby’s face.” It’s because the weather is always variable in summer. It is sunny right now, but the next minute, it may rain. Another Chinese saying is, “Fish jump out of the water and rain comes.” So the next time you see a fish jumping out of the water, remember to stay at home or take a raincoat or an umbrella with you if you go out.
In English, there is a saying. “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb (羔羊).” What does it mean? March is a month between winter and spring. It “comes in like a lion”. Why? Because the month begins with winter. It has cold and windy days. At the end of March, spring is on the way. The weather gets warm. So we say it “goes out like a lamb”.

Not long ago, my two grandchildren came to my house for dinner. They walked in, went straight to the sofa and lay down. They are 10 and 12 years old. They took out their smartphones and started playing games.
I felt worried to watch them, and so many kids today think of gaming as play. When I was a kid, I knew how to play. When I wanted a metal pedal car (踏板车) like some of my rich friends, my father made one for me out of wood. At first, I was shy about the homemade toy. But soon I liked it—my friends wanted to ride it. Dad also built a playhouse and tree houses for me. Dad just loved making things, or he really loved me—maybe both.
When I was young, we didn’t have many toys to play with. We had to be creative to have fun. We put up tents in the backyard and camped there. At night, we looked for interesting things on the streets. We also went on a bike trip to a lake once.
My grandchildren don’t know how fun these activities can be. After dinner, I decided to take them outside to show them something “different”. At first, they were not happy. “Why do we have to put on shoes and go outside?” they asked. “Because I want to show you something,” I said, and picked up my frisbee (飞盘). “Let’s go outside and throw the frisbee around.”
They said “Sure” slowly and unwillingly (不情愿地). Then we walked out to the street and started throwing the frisbee. Slowly, we got the hang of it. My grandson caught the frisbee more than ten times. We played until it got dark.

It was a great success. My grandchildren learned a new way to play.
