Rania was sure her wooden pencil had magical power.Every morning, she held
it close and whispered,"Help me get top marks."Her sister Somia just rolled her
eyes and said,"It's just a pencil."However,Rania didn't listen to her."My teacher
said my writing improved!"Rania said."That's because you practiced, not because
the pencil did anything,"Somia explained. But Rania still didn't believe her.
A few days before the exams,Rania spent most of her time on her phone, believing that her pencil
would work its magic. On the morning of her first exam,Rania walked into the classroom with her
"magical"pencil."Work your magic."she thought. But when she looked at the test paper, her mind went
completely blank. She hadn't reviewed at all.She threw the pencil on the desk and finally realized:there
was no magic in it.
Rania ran home crying and threw herself into Mum's arms."Mistakes are how we learn,"mum said.
"True magic comes from hard work, not a pencil or wishful thinking."These words touched Rania deeply.
She put away her phone and opened her textbooks.Every night, she reviewed her notes and even studied
with Somia.By the time of the next exam, she felt ready. This time, when she walked into the classroom,
she held her pencil calmly-not because she thought it was magical, but because she knew she was
well-prepared.When the results came out,she got excellent grades.

Scientists in Australia have used Artificial Intelligence (AI)to help them locate an
endangered bird called the Plains-wanderer.This new information will help protect the rare
birds.
The Plains-wanderer is a small bird that lives in Australia's grasslands. They help control insects and
spread seeds, which creates healthier habitats for other wildlife. The birds were once common in eastern
Australia. But that has changed as grasslands have been turned into farms and cities.Zoos Victoria says
英语第5页(共8页)
the birds'numbers have fallen by over 85%in recent years.Scientists believe there are now only 250 to
1,000 of the birds left in the wild.
To protect them,Zoos Victoria first had to learn where they were.Female Plains-wanderers make an
unusual "Ooom"call, and this was the key.The researchers set up 35 recording devices (called
"song meters"in nine grassy areas. The"song meters"collected so many hours of recordings, which was
too much for humans to study. Then the researchers fed the recordings to an AI system trained to identify
(the calls of Plains-wanderers.The AI discovered calls from two of the locations. After that, the
scientists double-checked and found the AI was correct.A worker from Zoos Victoria says the discovery
is"huge".It is the first time in over 30 years that the bird has been found west of Melbourne.
The new information of Plains-wanderers will help scientists protect the birds. The team plans to
work with the land owners to help protect the birds, and the grasslands they depend on.Now,the
researchers are still"listening"-using"song meters"andAI to try to locate more of the Plains-wanderers.
38.What do we know about the Plains-wanderer?
A.It is rare and in danger of dying out.
B.It is a kind of big bird living in forests.
C.It can help people build farms and cities.
39.Why are the Plains-wanderers endangered?
A.They are too small to live in Australia's grasslands.
B.Their habitats have been turned into farms and cities.
C.They play an important role in protecting native wildlife
40.Which step do scientists take first to find the bird?
A.Collect recordings
B.Use AI to check calls
C.Set up recording devices
41.What will the researchers do next according to the passage?
A.Use song meters to help make AI more intelligent.
B.Work with the land owners to help grow rice better.
C.Locate more Plains-wanderers to help protect them.

Every year,Mayfield School holds a"Family Tradition Week",where students share something from
their culture. This year,Ms.Patel's class chose a delicious idea:the Secret Recipe Project.
Each student had to bring a family recipe-not the whole instructions, just a story about it.
On Monday,Marco shared his grandmother's tomato soup.He explained that she made it every
winter to keep the house warm. When he read his story, the whole class said they could almost smell the
soup.
On Tuesday,Amina brought a special recipe for sweet rice her father learned from his grandparents.
"It's the taste of celebrations."she said.
By Wednesday, something interesting happened:students started noticing similarities. Many recipes
came from moments of comfort-rainy days, holidays and family gatherings...
英语第6页(共8页)
