Recently,Qingdao, along with many Chinese cities, has increased the class break from 10 to 15 minutes for
primary and middle school students. This warm educational policy (has brought a clear and welcome 1
to students'daily school life.
In the past, the 10-minute break was rather short for most students. After finishing a 45-minute class, students
had to 2 to do everything:get a drink, use the washroom, and get ready for the next class. There was almost
no time to relax their minds 3 talk with friends. After a whole morning of non-stop learning, many students
felt tired and found it hard to stay 4.
Now,the new 15-minute break gives students enough time to rest properly. Many go outside to enjoy the
sunshine and fresh air. Some chat 5 with classmates or do some light exercise."I don't have to rush anymore
during the break,"said Li Hua,a ninth-grader."I can slow down and really enjoy the time 6classes."
Most teachers have noticed7 differences.Students return to class more energetic and ready to learn, and
they can 8new knowledge more easily. The longer break helps rest their eyes and 9 study stress,so it
improves both their learning experience and results
This small but meaningful change shows that schools are thinking more about students'physical and mental

Can you imagine a paralyzed patient controlling a power wheelchair with only his thoughts? And
can you imagine him directing a robotic dog to pick up a food delivery? This is not a sci-fi movie scene. It is a huge
step forward from Chinese scientists'recent clinical trials of invasive brain--computer interface(BCD(侵入式g脑机
接口).
The patient became paralyzed after a fall in 2022.In June 2025,he got a BCI system. This system was made
by the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology under the CAS.After a few weeks of
training,he could control a computer cursor(光标)and a tablet(手写板)without difficulty.
To help the patient interact (with the world better, the researchers added new technologies. They
successfully made the BCI system work not only on a 2-D screen but also in the real 3-D world. For example, the
patient could use his thoughts to control a wheelchair and a robotic dog instead of just moving a cursor on a
computer screen. This was a new step in getting better. It helped the brain's orders go from a 2-D screen to real,
full-bodied 3-D interaction with the world.
An invasive BCI system has two parts:a front-end sensor and a back-end processor.The front-end sensor is a
very thin thread. It is only 1/100 as thick as a human hair.5 to 8 millimeters of it is put into the brain. The back-end
processor is as big as a coin.It is placed in a small hollow(中空的)on the skull(颅骨).Experts say the front-end
sensor is like a network cable, connecting the brain to the outside world to send and receive information. The
back-end processor tums the brain's weak signals into computer instructions. In this way, paralyzed patients can
use their thoughts to control external devices and live a better daily life.
Brain-computer interface is China's completely self-developed technology. It has broken the world record in
its field. It shows that China has become more powerful in high technology. We believe China will continue to lead
the world in technology development.

A pun, also called a homophonic pun,is a popular form of wordplay that uses words
with the same or similar sounds but different meanings. It is the English equivalent of
Chinese“harmonic memes'”(话音梗).Puns are common to be seen in daily life-from
funny jokes we share with friends and interesting TV or online ads to after-class
newspapers and even the famous plays of the great English writer Shakespeare. They
are easy to understand and can bring joy to people of all ages, especially us students,as
they make learning English easier.
It is believed that puns have become more popular. Why?First of all, they are funny
and relaxing.A clever pun can easily make people laugh, lift their mood and help us forget the worries of a long
study day.For example, when we feel tired after doing homework,a simple pun like"What do you call a fake(
noodle? An impasta"can make us smile and cheer up quickly.Secondly, puns make language more vivid and
creative. They encourage us to think flexibly()and appreciate the magic of words, showing us that a single
word or phrase can have multiple meanings. For example,"Why don't scientists trust atoms()?Because they
make up everything!"Here, the phrase"make up"has two meanings:it can mean"form"all things in the world or
"invent"untrue words.Another common example is "Which letter is full of water? The letter C",where"C"sounds
like"sea",making the sentence interesting and easy to remember. This type of wordplay fills simple sentences with
fun and surprises.
For students, leaming puns is an excellent way to improve our English. It makes it possible for us to get the
ability of memorizing new vocabulary (easily in a fun way, then we gain a better understanding of word
meanings, especially when we have to face some extremely difficult words.Besides, that helps us truly enjoy the
pleasure of language leamning. When we read English stories, listen to English conversations or even watch English
cartoons, try to carefully spot puns which will draw our attention and curiosity. It not only trains our language
comprehension ability but also makes our English learning more interesting and enjoyable
