Every school has its own rules. At my school, we have quite a few rules, but I think they are very 21. Let me tell you about some of them.
First, we must 22 our school uniforms every day. Some students don’t like this rule because they want to wear their own clothes. But I think uniforms help us focus on our studies 23 worrying about what to wear.
Second, we are not allowed to use mobile phones during class. We have to turn 24 our phones and put them in our lockers. If someone is caught using a phone in class, the teacher will take it away and keep it until the end of the day. This rule helps us 25 on our lessons.
Third, we have to keep our classroom clean. Everyone is expected to pick up 26 after themselves. We also take turns to clean the blackboard and sweep the floor. Our teacher says a clean environment helps us learn 27.
Fourth, we must arrive at school on time. If we are late, we have to get a late slip from the office before going to class. 28 we are late three times in a month, our parents will be called.
Some people might think these rules are too strict. 29 I believe rules are important. They help us become more responsible and create a good learning environment for 30. After all, no rules, no order.

My School Life: The Day I Broke a Rule
By Liu Wei, Age 14
Rules are important, but sometimes we forget them. I learned a hard lesson about following rules last term.
It was a Tuesday afternoon. I was in a hurry because I wanted to finish my math homework before the bell rang. I remembered that my best friend Wang Lin had borrowed my math notebook the day before. Without it, I couldn’t finish the last few problems.
The rule in our school is clear: no leaving the classroom during class without the teacher’s permission. But I thought, “I’ll be really quick. The teacher won’t even notice.” So I sneaked out and ran to Wang Lin’s classroom on the next floor.
When I got there, Wang Lin wasn’t in his seat. I waited for a minute, but he didn’t come back. Just as I was about to leave, a teacher saw me in the hallway. “Where is your hall pass, young man?” she asked. I had to tell her the truth. She wrote down my name and gave me a detention (留校留堂).
I felt so embarrassed. When I returned to my classroom, my teacher, Miss Chen, already knew what happened. “Liu Wei,” she said, “rules are there for a reason. What if there had been an emergency? Your classmate couldn’t find you because you left without permission.”
That day, I understood why the rule exists. It’s not that teachers don’t trust us. It’s about safety and order. Now, I always ask for permission before leaving the classroom. I’ve never broken that rule again.
From this experience, I learned that following rules is not just about avoiding punishment—it’s about being responsible and respecting others.
()36.Why did Liu Wei leave the classroom without permission?
A. He wanted to go to the toilet. B. He needed to get his math notebook from his friend.
C. He was called by another teacher. D. He wanted to play outside.
()37.What happened when Liu Wei was in the hallway?
A. He found Wang Lin immediately. B. He finished his homework.
C. A teacher saw him and gave him a detention. D. The bell rang and class was over.
()38.What does Miss Chen say is the reason for the rule?
A. To punish students who behave badly.
B. To make students feel uncomfortable.
C. To keep students safe and maintain order.
D. To give teachers more power.
()39.What did Liu Wei learn from this experience?
A. Breaking rules is sometimes necessary. B. Rules are only for young students.
C. Teachers don’t understand students. D. Following rules shows responsibility and respect.
()40.What is the best title for this passage?
A. My Favorite Teacher B. A Lesson in Following Rules
C. How to Get a Good Grade D. The Best School in Town

House Rules Around the World
Every family has its own rules. Some rules are about safety, some about respect, and some about daily habits. Here are some interesting family rules from different countries.
Japan
In many Japanese families, children are expected to remove their shoes before entering the house. This keeps the floor clean. Also, children are taught to say “Itadakimasu” (I humbly receive) before meals and “Gochisosama” (thank you for the meal) after meals. These are not just words—they show thankfulness for the food and the people who prepared it.
Germany
German parents often set strict bedtimes for their children, even on weekends. Many children have to be in bed by 8 p.m. when they are young. Also, children are expected to do their homework first before any screen time. Playing video games or watching TV is only allowed after all schoolwork is done.
Brazil
In Brazilian homes, children are often allowed to stay up later than in many other countries. Dinner is usually eaten late, around 8 or 9 p.m. But one common rule is that children must greet all adults with a kiss on the cheek. This is a sign of respect and affection.
Canada
Many Canadian families have a rule about “screen time”. Children may only use their phones, tablets, or computers for a certain number of hours per day. Also, children are expected to help with household chores. Many families have a chore chart on the fridge, and each child has tasks like setting the table or walking the dog.
China
In many Chinese families, children are taught to respect their elders. They must use polite language when speaking to grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Another common rule is that children should not start eating until all the family members are seated at the table. This shows respect and togetherness.
()41.What do Japanese children say before meals to show thankfulness?
A. Gochisosama. B. Itadakimasu. C. Sayonara. D. Arigato.
()42.When do German children usually have to go to bed?
A. Very late, around 11 p.m. B. After finishing their video games.
C. By 8 p.m. when they are young. D. Only after dinner is finished.
()43.What is special about Brazilian family rules?
A. Children must do chores every day. B. Children greet adults with a kiss on the cheek.
C. Children cannot use any electronic devices. D. Children must eat dinner before 6 p.m.
()44.In Canadian families, where is the chore chart often placed?
A. On the wall near the door. B. On the refrigerator.
C. On the children’s bedroom door. D. On the television.

八、书面表达
参考范文:
Dear school leaders,
I am writing to propose a new campus code of conduct to help make our school a better place.
Recently, I have noticed some bad phenomena on campus. For example, some students run in the hallways during class breaks, which is very dangerous. Also, many students forget to turn off the lights when they leave the classroom, wasting electricity.
To solve these problems, I suggest two new rules. First, anyone who runs in the hallways should help clean the hallway for a week. This will teach them to be more careful. Second, we should have a “light monitor” in each classroom. This student will be responsible for checking if the lights are off before the class leaves.
Rules are important because they keep everyone safe and create a good learning environment. I hope every student will obey the rules and take responsibility for their actions. A small change in each of us can make a big difference to our school.
Thank you for considering my suggestions.
Yours sincerely,
A student representative
