Every afternoon, the two girls studied together. Zoe never laughed at Lena’s slow progress or silly questions. Instead, she explained patiently and even drew pictures to make those difficult concepts easier to understand. When Lena still got stuck, Zoe broke down each step until she got it right. With Zoe’s encouragement, Lena also worked harder. She took more detailed notes and practiced extra problems every night. Gradually, the “foreign language” of math became familiar, and she even started to feel a little excited when she solved a tough problem.
One month later, the result of the first math exam came out. Lena’s hands kept shaking as she picked up her paper. when she saw a bright red“B”, a broad smile spread across her face. She ran to thank Zoe, who hugged her happily, and then found Mr. Carter to share the good news. He patted her shoulder proudly and said ,“ Hard work pays off”. Lena smiled, realizing that with friendly support, encouragement and her own perseverance, any difficulty could be overcome.

Chinese tourist attractions have seen a roaring travel boom (繁荣) this month as millions of primary and middle school students hit the road for their first-ever autumn holiday. Several provinces, including eastern Zhejiang, southwestern Sichuan and southern Guangdong, have implemented a three-day autumn break in November. Combined with the weekend, the vacation totals five days — a novel measure in China but widely adopted in Western countries.
These provinces are the first to follow a new guideline issued in September by nine central government departments, including the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Education: The guideline encourages localities to adjust academic calendars to include spring and autumn breaks, with decisions based on factors like each province’s unique climate and industry production schedules, a major determining factor for parents to take time off work.
Apart from better distributing the school calendar to ease students’ academic burden, the policy also aims to stoke domestic economic consumption, especially via the tourism industry. Data from online travel agency Trip shows that tourism bookings in Zhejiang, where the new autumn break kicked off on Nov. 12, had doubled compared to last year, with parent-child trips accounting for 46% of the total bookings.
As well as providing much-needed holidays for children, the policy has been paired with supportive measures for family travel, noted Yang Han, a researcher at online travel platform Qunar, in an interview with local media. These measures include flexible work leave policies for parents and discounted family tickets at museums, science centers and scenic spots.
Amid the travel boom, trips themed around textbook featured locations — ranging from time-honored historical sites to breathtaking natural attractions — are emerging as a top choice for families. More and more parents are seeking inspiration for trips that extend children’s learning beyond the classroom walls, making education and leisure go hand in hand.
24. What can we learn about the autumn break in paragraph 1?

D. It has been carried out in all Chinese provinces.
25. Why are industry production schedules important for this policy?

D. They determine whether parents can take time off work.
26. What does the underlined word “stoke” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Control B. Fuel C. Evaluate D. Weaken
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Autumn break policy promotes travel boom.
B. Parents drive the booming tourism industry.
C. Textbook-themed trips are a new choice for families.
D. Western holiday ideas are influencing Chinese education.

The International Day of Peace is a day that aims to reduce violence (暴力) and to strengthen the ideals of peace around the world, and is observed on 21 September every year.
On the special day, the UN asks to stop all fighting around the world for 24 hours and asks people to observe one minute of silence at noon to honor victims of war and violence. The day begins with the Peace Bell Ceremony at the UN headquarters. The bell is made of metal that includes coins contributed by people from 65 member countries. After the bell has been rung, the UN Secretary-General delivers a speech.
Each year, the UN chooses a different theme for this day, such as “End racism: build peace” or “Climate action for peace”. This helps us to see that true peace can only be achieved when all people have the same rights, or that we must fight the climate emergency together.
People worldwide can engage in different events on this day. It could be in the field of the arts, with photography or film. Some schools also hold some activities focusing on preventing school violence. “This term, our school launches a new course teaching us to be peacemakers. Learning to be peacemakers, we can not only know negotiation (谈判) skills and take responsibility for resolving disagreements ourselves, but also help others involved in conflicts,” says Helen, a high school student.
With the Internet and social media, there is now a lot more awareness of the International Peace Day than back in 1981. Social media posts sharing information, ideas and peace messages reach millions of people all over the globe. There are many online events that people can register for on the day, like live shows, and conferences.
Apart from ending international conflicts, this day is also about changing our behavior towards each other. For example, we can try to bring peace to our personal lives by saying sorry and making peace with someone we know. Individual actions add up to great things when they are multiplied by millions of people worldwide.
28. What marks the beginning of the yearly International Peace Day?
A. A speech from the UN Secretary-General.
B. One minute’s silence to honor war victims.
C. A donation of coins from 65 countries.
D. The ringing of the Peace Bell.
29. What may Helen think about her school’s new course this term?
A. It’s beneficial. B. It’s creative.

Cycling is an extremely healthy sport. This low-impact exercise can strengthen your legs, improve your balance, and boost your overall fitness effectively, making it suitable for people of any age.
Beyond physical benefits, cycling is also remarkably good for the brain. As Healthline points out, riding a bike helps reduce feelings of stress and anxiety by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood lifters. And new research reveals even more significant cognitive (认知) advantages.
A study published in the journal JAMA Network Open tracked 479,723 participants over a 13-year follow-up period. Its key findings linked active travel modes of transportation — especially cycling — to better brain health and a significantly lower risk of dementia (痴呆症).
Participants were asked about their daily travel habits excluding work commutes (通勤) and divided into four groups: those using passive transport like buses or trains; regular walkers; people who mixed walking with other methods; and those who rode bikes or combined cycling with other forms of travel. The results showed that regular cyclists had a 19 percent lower risk of dementia and a 22 percent lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease compared to other groups. Additionally, brain imaging of the participants confirmed that cyclists had a larger hippocampus — a brain region crucial for memory and learning — which is a clear indication of healthy cognitive function.
Active travel like cycling is accessible to most people, requiring no specialized equipment beyond a bike, and its benefits for older adults are particularly tremendous. Liang Kaichen, PhD, lead author of the study, notes that promoting cycling as daily transport — even mixed with other modes — could be a practical and low-cost strategy to reduce dementia risk and preserve brain structure.
Chen plans to further research how cycling frequency and duration influence brain health, plus the effects of changing active travel behavior. This is especially important for seniors, as small lifestyle changes yield great brain health benefits. Clifford Segil, an adult neurologist, adds middle-age lifestyle adjustments to prevent dementia are valuable, as proven neuroprotective methods remain rare.
32.What did the study in JAMA Network Open find about regular cyclists?
A.They had a higher risk of dementia.
B.They showed better cognitive function.
C.They owned healthier bodies than others.
D.They depended more on passive transport.
33.What is the focus of Paragraph 4?
A.Confirmation of the research.
B.Methods of dividing participants.
C.The process and results of the study.
D.Comparisons between different travel groups.
34.Which of the following statements about cycling is TRUE according to Paragraph 5?
A. It is only accessible to young people with good physical condition.
B. Its benefits for older adults are especially significant.
C. It requires people to buy a lot of specialized sports equipment.
D. It cannot be combined with other forms of transportation.
35.What can we know from Clifford Segil’s words?
A.Seniors should avoid changing their daily habits.
B.Neuroprotective methods are now widely available.
C.Middle-age adjustments may help protect brain health.
D.Lifestyle changes are the only way to prevent dementia.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many teenagers promise themselves they’ll go to sleep early, yet still stay up scrolling (浏览) their phones in the dark. As minutes turn into an hour, messages, short videos and games keep their brains awake. 36 Blue light from the screen slows the release of sleep hormones (荷尔蒙), and worries from social media can follow you into your dreams. The habit can be changed with a few simple steps.
Build a phone-free wind-down time. Avoid lying in bed with your phone beside you. 37 After that, you might read a paper book, write in a diary, or simply listen to soft music. Keeping your hands busy with offline activities makes it easier to forget about checking your phone again.
Understand why you reach for your phone. 38 Maybe you are afraid of missing out on news from friends, or maybe you are putting off thinking about homework. Once you name the true reason, you can look for healthier ways to deal with it, such as talking to someone you trust.
Make nights something to look forward to. Plan a small treat, like enjoying a cup of warm milk or doing a short relaxation exercise. You could also keep a grateful list and add three good things that happened that day. 39 When your brain connects bedtime with comfort instead of stress, the pull of the phone grows weaker.
40 Instead, by practising these ideas, you can protect your sleep, care for your mental health, and wake up with more energy for the next day.
A.You don’t have to let late-night scrolling control your life.
B.Without strict requirements, you may stay up all night long.
C.Of course, you shouldn’t completely give up smartphones to sleep well.
D.Set a clear “screen-off” time, such as 30 minutes before you plan to sleep.
E.Over time, this late-night scrolling quietly steals both your rest and your energy.
F.Ask yourself what you are really looking for when you keep refreshing the screen.
G.Focusing on these pleasant moments gently moves your attention away from the screen.

Lena had always been confident in her studies—until she entered high school. In her first math class, Mr. Carter wrote a series of expressions on the blackboard. While most of her classmates nodded and took notes, the symbols “x” and “y” seemed to swim before her eyes. she felt as if she were listening to a“foreign language”.
The confusion only grew when she sat down to do her homework. For two hours she remained at her desk , staring at the textbook and the blank pages of her notebook. She reread the first question ten times, but the numbers refused to make sense. Upset and ashamed, she never felt so defeated by a subject.
Her anxiety deepened over the following days. she stopped raising her hand. she was worried that her questions would sound stupid. One day, Mr. Carter called on her to answer a question. Lena stood up , her face burning with embarrassment because she was totally clueless about the answer. But a boy named Jax said in a low voice, “ Even a middle schooler knows that!”
Lena bit her lip and sank back into her seat with her head hanging very low. Seeing this , Mr. Carter asked Lena to stay after class. Instead of criticizing he, he said gently, “I notice you’ve been struggling, Lena. Math can be tough at first. Like learning to play a musical instrument, it requires the right method and a lot of practice. I have talked to Zoe and she has agreed to help you. You know , she is a kind girl and is always ready to help.” The next day, Mr. Carter rearranged the seats , and Zoe became Lena’s new deskmate.
