During the holiday, I went with my parents to visit my grandparents in the countryside. When Grandma said she had been busy with farm work, I decided right away to stay overnight at her house. The thought of planting vegetables and watering the fields made me really excited. That night, I could hardly fall asleep.
“Sweetie, time to get up.” Grandma’s soft voice woke me up. I looked at the clock — it was only 5:30 in the morning!
I asked, “Grandma, why do we have to get up so early?”
“Because the hens just laid their eggs, Han Lin. Now is the best time to collect them,” she explained.
The morning air was cool and fresh. But as we walked toward the chicken house, a strong, unpleasant smell came out. I held my breath and followed Grandma closely. She opened a small window and reminded me, “You have to be quick but gentle. Don’t scare the hens.”
I saw a hen guarding two large eggs on the straw. Her sharp mouth looked a bit scary. I took a deep breath and slowly reached out my hand. Suddenly, the hen stood up! I let out a small cry but quickly picked up the eggs before she could hurt me. The eggs felt warm in my hands — so different from the cold ones we usually take out of the fridge.
Later, we watered and fertilized(施肥) the vegetables in the fields, picked two pumpkins, and collected a big basket of tomatoes. By the time Grandma called, “Han Lin, dinner is ready!”, I was already sound asleep on the sofa.
When I finally sat down to enjoy the simple meal, I realized for the first time that every dish was the fruit of hard work. I had not only helped on the farm but learned to respect the hard work behind our food.
4. Why did Han Lin stay at her grandma’s house?
A. To taste fresh farm food. B. To look after grandparents.
C. To prepare for a school project. D. To help with busy farm work.
5. Which is the right order of the following events?
a. Han Lin fertilized the vegetables.
b. Han Lin picked up the warm eggs.
c. Han Lin ate the simple meal happily.
d. Han Lin slept soundly on the sofa.
A. b-a-d-c B. b-d-c-a C. c-b-a-d D. d-b-a-c
6. What does the underlined phrase “let out a small cry” show?
A. Han Lin felt quite surprised. B. Han Lin was a little scared.
C. Han Lin expressed her excitement. D. Han Lin wanted help from Grandma.
7. How did Han Lin feel when she had dinner at the end of the story?
A. Moved by Grandma’s love. B. Happy about the fresh food.
C. Respectful of farmers’ work. D. Too tired to enjoy a meal.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. C

【4题详解】
根据原文第一段“When Grandma said she had been busy with farm work, I decided right away to stay overnight at her house.”

因此顺序为b—a—d—c。

Darren 93
January 2026 in Relationships
I’ve always got on well with my little brother. He’s two years younger than me so I’ve always felt really protective towards him. Well, that was until a few weeks ago. The problem is that he now goes to the same middle school as me but he doesn’t seem to get that school is different from home. He and his friends seem to think it’s funny to follow me around and play jokes on me. At first, my friends thought it was quite funny, but now he’s really starting to get on their nerves. They’ve kind of shut me out. I’ve spoken to my parents and they had a word with him, but it’s made no difference. If anything, it’s made things worse. Honestly, I don’t know what to do next and I’m afraid I’ ll say something to him that I might regret. What should I do?
Jenny
Just ignore him—that’s the key. Clearly, you’d like him to stop, but I suppose the more he sees his behaviors influencing you, the more he’ll do it on purpose. Just act like he isn’t there! Then he’ll get bored and realize it’s much more fun to hang out with people in his own year than to stick to his older brother.
Eric
Turn the tables on him. Follow him around and see how he likes it. Surely you know enough foolish things about him. If he still never changes, you could warn him you would share these secrets with others to make his life grey!
Sandy
Have another chat with him. Explain to him why it upsets you and ask him how he’d feel if you did the same to him. Hopefully, he’s able to understand.
8. What kind of text is this?
A. A news report. B. An online forum.
C. A personal diary. D. An email with replies.
9. What is Darren 93’s problem?
A. His parents show little interest in his school life.
B. His friends don’t want him to make new friends.
C. His brother’s jokes are pushing his friends away.
D. He does something that he regrets to his brother.
10. What does Jenny advise Darren 93 to do?
A. To ignore his brother. B. To talk with his brother again.
C. To share his brother’s secrets. D. To ask his parents for help.
11. How should Darren 93 deal with his problem according to Sandy?
A. In a cold way. B. In a friendly way.

The ups and downs of life may seem unpredictable, but scientists have found certain patterns that almost all people share. Even if you’ve passed some of your “prime”, you still have other prime years ahead.
When are you smartest?
IQ scores show you are smartest from 14 to 25. However, you become wiser and more experienced with age. You’re sharpest in your 20s. Around 30, memory begins to decline, especially your math skills. But your IQ for other tasks climbs. For example, your vocabulary at the age of 45 is three times as great as when you graduated from college. At 60, your brain holds almost four times as much information as it did at 21. Since you can’t be both sharp and wise at the same time, psychologists suggest using a “maturity quotient” (成熟商数) for adults.
When are you happiest?
You feel best physically from 15 to 24, the best professionally from 40 to 49. Before 24, we believe our happiest years are yet to come; after 30, we believe they’re behind us. A National Health Survey agrees: After age 30, we become more realistic and do not see happiness as a goal in itself. If we stay healthy and achieve our goals, happiness will follow.
When are you most creative?
Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak (巅峰) may be different. Mozart wrote a symphony at eight, and Mendelssohn composed his best known work A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 17, but most of the great music was written between 33 and 39. Though the peak in most fields come early—most Nobel Prize winners did their top research in their late 20s and 30s—creative people continue to produce quality work all their lives. For the “well-conditioned mind”, there is no upper limit.
12. What does the underlined word “decline” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. B.
C. D.
13. In which situation can people over 30 feel the happiest?
A. When they stay healthy and achieve their life goals.
B. When they keep chasing happiness as their main aim.
C. When they look back on their happiest years before 24.
D. When they only focus on improving their math skills.
14. Why does the writer mention Mozart and Mendelssohn in the last paragraph?
A. To argue a well-conditioned mind has no limit.
B. To prove most great music was written before 30.
C. To explain Nobel winners do top research early.
D. To show creative peaks may differ by person.
15. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How to Stay Young Forever. B. Different Ways to be Happy.
C. The Best Years of Your Life. D. The Importance of Testing IQ.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了科学家发现的人类生命中普遍存在的阶段规律,围绕智力、幸福感、创造力三个维度,说明了人在不同年龄阶段的特点。
【12题详解】
根据“When are you smartest?”段落中的“You’re sharpest in your 20s. Around 30, memory begins to decline, especially your math skills. But your IQ for other tasks climbs.”可知,20多岁思维最敏锐。30岁左右,记忆力开始下降,尤其是你的数学技能。但你对其他任务的智商会上升,可知“decline”的意思是“下降”,对应的是选项B中的图片。
【13题详解】
根据“When are you happiest?”段落中的“If we stay healthy and achieve our goals, happiness will follow.”可知,30岁以上的人在保持健康、实现目标时会感到幸福。
【14题详解】
根据“When are you most creative?”段落中的“Generally between 30 and 39, but the peak (巅峰) may be different.”

C. In a creative way. D. In a humorous way.
D
