You might turn on your air conditioner (空调), right? But in India, things aren’t so simple. Only about 20 percent of families there own an air conditioner. The rest have to face rising temperatures without any cooling tools. Now, an ancient material is stepping in to help: terracotta (赤陶土). A long long time ago, the Harappan people (哈拉帕人) used terracotta pots (罐子) to store water. These pots are still common in the Indian countryside today. They help people cool water without using electricity. The material is quite affordable, with each pot costing only one U.S. dollar. So, how do these pots work? Well, terracotta has many tiny, almost invisible (看不见的) holes on its surface. These holes allow water to slowly dry up. As the water dries up, it carries heat away, causing the area around to become cooler. Many Indian architects (建筑师) get good ideas from this simple thought. They now use terracotta in their building designs to control indoor temperatures. One pioneer in this field is Ant Studio. Its CoolAnt project adds a terracotta “skin” to buildings. The skin helps moisture (潮气) and heat move between indoor and outdoor spaces. “We’ve seen temperature drops of 6-8℃,” says Monish Siripurapu, the company’s founder (创办人). Other Indian companies are taking part. A Threshold is reusing old terracotta to make special “breathing” walls. These walls work much like Ant Studio’s terracotta “skin.” MittiCool has created terracotta fridges that can keep food fresh for three to five days without electricity. Many researchers see terracotta as a great change for our warming planet. As news spreads, the material may become more widely used. We could all stay cool without using lots of energy. 26.(2分)What does the underlined word “affordable” mean? A.difficult to get. B.beautiful and colorful. C.not too expensive. 27.(2分)What does Ant Studio’s CoolAnt project use terracotta for? A.To make fridges. B.To store water in the countryside. C.To add a “skin” to buildings for cooling. 28.(2分)What is true about terracotta from the passage? A.It is an environmentally friendly way to stay cool. B.It is a new material invented by Indian scientists. C.It will replace air conditioners all over the world soon. 29.(2分)What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A.To ask people to stop using air conditioners. B.To introduce the history of the Harappan people. C.To tell readers about a traditional cooling way in India. B (本题8分)Do you know what music people like listening to? If you ask them, you may get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preferences (偏爱)? What do these differences say about us? Researchers from Cambridge University set out to answer these questions. They asked over 350, 000 people from over 50 different countries. Then, they discovered that musical preferences have the relation to personalities. Outgoing people, for example, prefer music with strong beats such as rap. Country music fans are shown to be more serious about their jobs. One of the findings is quite interesting. The researchers thought that people with much stress should like either sad music or rhythmic (有节奏的) music. But it turns out that these people like neither. Instead, they prefer loud music. Perhaps they like to listen to this kind of music to lower their stress. The researchers also found that climates (气候) might influence people’s musical preferences and personalities. People in hot weather prefer music that they can dance to. They are more outgoing. This may be a result of longer daylight hours. They encourage people to go outdoors to dance. Of course, nothing is clear-cut. We may not group people simply by their musical tastes. The Cambridge study just showed us that people of different cultures are more similar than we think. “People are divided by languages and cultures,” said Dr. David Greenberg, the leading researcher. “But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people from elsewhere, then we can say that music is really like a bridge.” 30.(2分)How does the writer lead in the topic? A.By listing numbers. B.By asking questions. C.By showing problems. 31.(2分)What music do people who are stressed out prefer according to the text? A.Loud music. B.Sad music. C.Country music. 32.(2分)What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.Music helps people all over the world communicate. B.People should be grouped by their musical tastes. Jacobs School in Hull, Massachusetts. The sculptures are made entirely of rubbish collected by sixth-graders! The school lies on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In February 2024, the students spent a cold day cleaning up a nearly 1-mile area of Nantasket Beach. They collected more than 40 bags of rubbish. “I often go to the beach and don’t notice the rubbish,” says Derek DeGallo, who is now a seventh-grader. “But when I looked for it, I realized how much there was.” Every year, billions of pounds of rubbish end up in oceans all over the world. The students found many things on the beach, from fishing lines to old shopping carts. Most of it is plastic. This waste makes beaches dirty and can hurt sea animals — many get stuck in the plastic or eat it by mistake, falling ill. After their beach cleanup, the students sorted the rubbish into groups like glass, plastic and foam and counted each piece of rubbish. They sent the data to the Center for Coastal Studies, an organization that helps protect the ocean near Massachusetts. Then, a local artist named Jackie Ranney and the school’s teachers helped the students turn the rubbish into sculptures of fish and other sea creatures, like whales and seahorses. The artworks show people how important it is to take care of the earth. “I hope kids see these artworks and think about how they use plastic,” says Ranney, the local artist. “They might ask themselves, ‘Do I throw away and recycle my rubbish in the right way?’” Derek, now a seventh-grader, feels proud that he and his classmates helped stop rubbish from getting into the ocean. “Our town’s beaches are wonderful,” he says. “We want to make sure they stay clean.” 37.(1分)Why are some artworks shown at Lillian M.
