Ning Zhongyan has been crowned Milano Cortina 2026 men’s 1500m speed skating champion, after setting a new Olympic record time of 1:41.98 on 19 February.
The skater from China beat pre-race favourite Jordan Stolz, as the U. S. athlete finished with silver in 1:42.75. Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands won the bronze (1:42.82).
The race saw four athletes go under the previous Olympic record, including the three podium finishers and Dutch skater Joep Wennemars. But Ning proved to be the fastest of them all, taking over a second off the Beijing 2022 Olympic record of 1:43.21 set by today’s bronze medallist Nuis.
This was the third Olympic medal and first gold for China’s Ning, after he won bronze in the 1000m and team pursuit earlier in the Games.
After his victory, he spoke to reporters, “After the Beijing Winter Olympics, the level in speed skating just kept getting higher and higher,” he said. “It felt like there was a mountain in front of me, and no matter what I did, I just could not get past it. I kept telling myself to trust that all the effort would add up one day. Today was that day. Even now, it still feels a little unreal that I was able to do this.”
“Ning’s time was a surprise; he had the race of his life,” said Stolz. “It was difficult. I didn’t know much about placings until I crossed the finish line. But if anybody was going to win, I thought Ning would be the one to do it. I was happy for him.”
Bronze medallist Nuis added a fourth Olympic medal to his collection, having won gold in the 1500m (PyeongChang 2018, Beijing 2022) and the 1000m (PyeongChang 2018). It was a fitting send-off for the Olympic legend, who announced yesterday that this will be his final Olympic race. “It’s the icing on the cake,” Nuis said of this medal.
4. What does the third paragraph imply?
A. The race’s intensity. B. The event’s popularity.
C. The skaters’ experience. D. The record’s importance.
5. What does the “mountain” symbolize in Ning’s statement?
A. A minor setback. B. An external pressure.
C. A temporary barrier. D. An unbeatable challenge.
6. Why does the text mention quotes from Stolz?
A. To emphasize the historic nature of the race.
B. To highlight Ning’s rising global recognition.
C. To praise Ning’s strengths in an indirect way.
D. To contrast different attitudes to competition.
7. What does Nuis view his bronze medal as?
A. A very disappointing result. B. A necessary duty to his team.
C. A satisfying close to his career. D. A well-earned reward for effort.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. C

White Rabbit candy has not changed in 60 years. But some other things have changed. When a pop-up (快闪) shop in Shanghai began selling drinks flavored like White Rabbit candy, people queued for up to four hours for a cup priced at 20 yuan ($2.9). China’s nostalgia (怀旧) economy has reshaped how brands are marketed.
However, the White Rabbit milk tea is itself a warning tale. Once customers reached the counter after four hours, many were disappointed. “It tastes just like any regular bubble tea (珍珠奶茶) out there,” one told reporters. Another posted: “It’s just exploiting the classic brand.”
The comments point to the central weakness of the nostalgia economy. When heritage is used primarily as a good pricing reason, when nostalgic packaging is the product and what is inside is ordinary, consumers notice. The disappointment runs deeper than a normal commercial letdown, because something more personal has been involved.
There are more risks. When nostalgic design becomes a recipe, the symbols stop carrying weight. And a nostalgia economy that speaks only to one generation’s memories is not building a shared culture. When the pop-up closes and the limited edition sells out, what remains? If the answer is nothing but the memory of a queue, the brand has wasted its heritage rather than grown it.
The question facing China’s nostalgia economy is not whether there is a market for continuity but whether the industry will serve that market with depth or exploit it with shortcuts. Some of us grew up with White Rabbit candy. Others were born too late to. But we are all looking for the same thing: a cultural identity with roots deep enough to hold, and a sense that what is being built today is worth remembering tomorrow. Nostalgia does not offer the past. It offers a reason to feel at home in the present.
8. What has changed about White Rabbit?
A. Its drink price. B. Its brand marketing.
C. Its candy recipe. D. Its target customers.
9. Why does the author mention the customers’ comments about the drink?
A. To suggest the decline of the brand. B. To note the popularity of regular bubble tea.
C. To prove the high price of the drink. D. To show the trap of nostalgia-based selling.
10. What is the author’s suggestion for China’s nostalgia economy?
A. Serving the market with shortcuts. B. Focusing on one generation’s memories.
C. Using the past to root today’s culture. D. Copying the past exactly as it once was.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Nostalgia marketing puts heritage at risk. B. White Rabbit candy remains unchanged.
C. Nostalgia economy saves brand heritage. D. White Rabbit milk tea fails to satisfy fans.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. A

Scientists have known that sperm whales communicate through patterns of clicks known as codas. These sounds are not random. Instead, they form complex sequences that whales use when interacting with members of their family groups. Yet the real meaning of these signals has long remained a mystery. Hidden within the ocean’s depths is a communication system far more complicated than researchers once imagined. Many experts believe that such a system may even include something similar to a basic language, but no one has been able to fully figure it out so far.
To solve this perennial puzzle, scientists have turned to AI for help. By feeding thousands of whale recordings into advanced computer models, scientists have begun to detect patterns that human ears alone could never recognize. Similar to the way large language models learn patterns in human speech, AI systems can analyze enormous collections of whale codas and identify repeating structures within them. In early experiments, these systems were able to predict the type of coda and even identify which whale produced it with remarkable accuracy.
Inspired by these results, researchers launched Project CETI (Cetacean Translation Initiative), an international collaboration bringing together marine biologists, linguists, engineers and computer scientists to interpret the communication system of sperm whales. By combining underwater recording devices with powerful AI models, the team hopes to map the hidden structure of whale sounds and eventually understand how whales exchange information.
If successful, the project could transform how humans understand animal intelligence. Not only might it reveal that whales possess a complicated communication system, but it could also show that language-like structures exist far beyond the human world. In this sense, AI may become more than a technological tool. Properly used, it could help humans listen, perhaps for the first time, to the voices of another species.
12. What can we learn about sperm whales’ codas from paragraph 1?
A. They can only be heard in the deep ocean.
B. They are simple signals for daily communication.
C. They carry meanings that are waiting to be explained.
D. They differ greatly from other sea animals’ sound patterns.
13. What does the underlined word “perennial” mean?
A. long-standing B. wide-ranging
C. far-reaching D. deep-rooted
14. What does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. The importance of large language models. B. The role AI plays in studying whale codas.
C. The process of collecting whale recordings. D. The achievements in whale protection research.
15. What does the author say about Project CETI?
A. It has solved the mystery of animal intelligence.
B. It aims to make whale research a separate discipline.
C. It may improve human understanding of animal language.
D. It helps develop advanced underwater recording devices.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. C

【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“Many experts believe that such a system may even include something similar to a basic language, but no one has been able to fully figure it out so far.(许多专家认为,这样的系统甚至可能包含类似于基本语言的元素,但迄今为止还没有人能够完全弄清楚它)”可知,交流系统迄今为止还没有人能够完全弄清楚,说明这一问题是长期存在的。故划线词意思是“长期存在的”。
【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“To solve this perennial puzzle, scientists have turned to AI for help. By feeding thousands of whale recordings into advanced computer models, scientists have begun to detect patterns that human ears alone could never recognize. Similar to the way large language models learn patterns in human speech, AI systems can analyze enormous collections of whale codas and identify repeating structures within them. In early experiments, these systems were able to predict the type of coda and even identify which whale produced it with remarkable accuracy.(为了解决这一长期存在的难题,科学家们开始借助人工智能寻求帮助。
根据第四段“If successful, the project could transform how humans understand animal intelligence. Not only might it reveal that whales possess a complicated communication system, but it could also show that language-like structures exist far beyond the human world.(如果该项目取得成功,它将彻底改变人类对动物智力的认知方式。它不仅可能会揭示鲸鱼拥有复杂的交流系统,还可能表明类似语言的结构远远超出人类世界的范围)”可知,作者认为CETI项目可能提升人类对动物语言的理解。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How many times do you find yourself in a conversation with someone, waiting for the other person to stop talking so you can say what you want to say? ____16____ This common experience shows a lack of active listening, because you are only thinking about how you want to respond.
Communication that leads to real human connection involves active listening and empathy. Active listening includes eye contact as well as verbal and non-verbal acknowledgments that you are listening. ____17____ Empathy involves reflection, validation and a genuine concern for how others are feeling. This combination of active listening and empathy — empathetic listening — can improve relationships of all kinds.
____18____ Being brave enough to share with another person is a vulnerable position to be in. Imagine sharing something sad with a friend: “I studied so hard for the math exam, but I still failed it.” Consider these two potential responses and how they would make you feel.
“Oh well, I’m glad I’m not the one taking that exam. Want to hang out?”
“That must be so hard. Thank you for sharing with me. I am here for you.”
The first response might leave one feeling dismissed. Why do people respond like that? Perhaps the comment comes from a place of the listener being uncomfortable with hearing something that taps into their own fears or vulnerability. ____19____ The second response, however, might make one feel heard, seen and supported. It shows the listener heard what the other person was saying, understanding and expressing concern.
So how do you know what to say or not to say when someone shares something difficult with you? Sometimes, the best thing to do is to sit and listen. Brene Brown, a renowned researcher in this field, says it best: “Empathy is a strange and powerful thing. There is no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. ____20____”
A. Shifting the topic might bring comfort to the speaker.
B. These include nodding, confirming, and clarifying questions.
C. Just be empathetic and you’ll have thought-provoking conversations.
D. It’s simply listening, withholding judgment, and emotionally connecting.
E. Everyone wants to feel understood for speaking their thoughts and feelings.
F. The listener may want to shut down the conversation and move to a safer space.
G. You might even expect the other person to completely tune into what you are saying.
【答案】16. G 17. B 18. E 19. F 20. D

The Scots may well have standardized golf as we know it, making ____36____ a game of 18 holes. But it is still uncertain ____37____ first came up with the idea. The Romans played a game called paganica, in which a ball stuffed with feathers and wool ____38____ (hit) with a bent stick, while the Dutch played a stick-and-ball game called colf as early as the 13th century.
But the most interesting — and in many ways convincing — evidence ever ____39____ (document) of an early version of golf comes from China. A game called chuiwan became popular in the Song dynasty. Players used ten clubs to hit wooden balls towards ____40____ (bright) coloured flags — sound familiar? They had a club for long distances, a precursor (前身) of the modern-day driver, and the tee was called the ji, or base ____41____ English.
There was even an early version of the R&A Rules of Golf: Wan Jing, or The Classic of the Ball, published during the Yuan dynasty. It ____42____ (lay) out the rules, and placed great ____43____ (emphasize) on sportsmanship and correct behaviour — similar to modern golf. There’s also a reference in an ancient book to an official of the Southern Tang dynasty ____44____ (tell) his daughter to “dig holes in the ground” so he could hit a ball into them using a special stick.
The game seems ____45____ (die) out in China during the Qing dynasty, but it certainly qualifies as a royal and ancient game.

38. was hit
39. documented
40. brightly

【39题详解】

【45题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:这种运动在清朝时期似乎在中国已经消亡,但它无疑是一种皇室和古老的运动。seem to do sth.为固定短语,意为“似乎做某事”,根据during the Qing dynasty可知,此处表示已经消亡,需用动词不定式的完成式to have done。故填to have died。

Dear readers,
Our school is planning to carry out a “paperless homework”project, which has caused a hot discussion among us students.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Dear readers,
Our school is planning to carry out a “paperless homework” project, which has caused a hot discussion among us students.
Supporters speak highly of this new policy. On the one hand, it helps cut down paper waste and practise eco-friendly lifestyles effectively. On the other hand, online submission and correction greatly boost learning efficiency, and digital homework also makes it easier for students to sort out and review learning resources.
Nevertheless, every coin has two sides. Some students worry that prolonged screen time will damage their eyesight. Moreover, electronic failures or network errors may interrupt study. Most importantly, handwriting practice contributes to better knowledge memorization and solid learning foundations.
As far as I am concerned, we should adopt a flexible way. Combining online and paper homework can balance environmental benefits and efficient learning perfectly.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下列文章,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Dragon Boat Festival was approaching, and the ancient town in southern China was bathed in warm early summer sunshine. The streets were dotted with fresh green bamboo leaves, and the air was filled with the faint fragrance of mugwort (艾蒿), announcing the arrival of the traditional festival.
Seventeen-year-old Ethan, who had lived in the United States with his parents since childhood, was sent back to his hometown to spend the festival with his grandfather. Having grown up immersed in Western culture, Ethan held a strong sense of indifference towards traditional Chinese festivals. He regarded the Dragon Boat Festival as nothing but an old, outdated custom, far less attractive than Western carnivals and parties. All he wanted to do was stay in his room, scrolling through social media or playing online games, showing no interest in the festive atmosphere around him.
Grandfather was a well-known local inheritor of traditional zongzi-making skills, and he had been eagerly looking forward to Ethan’s return, hoping to pass on the family craft and help his grandson connect with his cultural roots. He specially picked fresh bamboo leaves, prepared high-quality glutinous rice, sweet red beans and salty egg yolks, and invited Ethan to make zongzi with him.
However, Ethan frowned and refused rudely without a second thought. He complained that making zongzi was tedious (冗长的) and time-consuming, and couldn’t understand why people still stuck to such old customs. Hearing his words, Grandfather’s smile faded away, and a deep sense of disappointment crossed his wrinkled face. He silently carried the ingredients to the courtyard, sitting alone on the stone bench, slowly folding the bamboo leaves.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1
Watching Grandfather’s bent back in the courtyard, Ethan was seized with a complicated mixture of guilt and hesitation. He stepped out of the room slowly, his eyes falling on Grandfather’s rough but deft hands folding bamboo leaves neatly. Sensing his approach, Grandfather looked up with a gentle smile, patiently demonstrating every step without urging. Ethan sat down quietly, imitating his movements clumsily. Despite failing several times, Grandfather guided him with endless patience, telling him the stories of Qu Yuan behind the festival while they worked. Gradually, Ethan’s restlessness faded away, and he became fully absorbed in the delicate process.
Paragraph 2
As the steaming zongzi were taken out, the rich fragrance filled the whole courtyard, touching Ethan’s heart deeply. He took a bite of the warm zongzi, tasting not only the sweet filling but also the love of family and the weight of tradition. For the first time, he truly understood that the Dragon Boat Festival was far more than a simple festival — it carried the long history of China and the precious cultural roots of his family. A strong sense of cultural pride surged through him, and he completely let go of his previous prejudice. That summer, Ethan truly found his cultural identity and learned to cherish the precious traditions of his motherland.
