Be the Best of
Whatever You Are
By Douglas Malloch
If you can’t be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub (矮树) in the valley-but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can’t be a tree.
If you can’t be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can’t be a muskie then just be a bass-
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
We can’t all be captains, we’ve got to be crew (海员),
There’s something for all of us here,
There’s big work to do, and there’s lesser to do,
And the task you must do is the near.
If you can’t be a highway then just be a trail (小径),
If you can’t be the sun be a star,
It isn’t by size that you win or you fail-
Be the best of whatever you are!

Our teacher said we couldn’t go camping without adults. I asked Dad to come, but he had to work and suggested Uncle John. I didn’t want to—Uncle John always did silly things, yet he was the only choice, so he joined us.
We had troubles every day, just as I worried. Uncle John cooked sausages but burned them black. He just said we could throw them and see who threw the farthest, making me really cross. Holly Ho got scared on the rock wall and wouldn’t come down. Uncle John climbed to help, but his foot got stuck in a hole. Later, he fell out of the canoe (独木舟), with duckweed (浮萍) on his head and silly faces. I lied to Holly that he wasn’t my uncle.
On the way home, the bus broke down with a bang. The driver couldn’t fix it, and the hungry, tired kids even cried. Uncle John said he’d fix it. I shouted to stop him but failed, so I hid under the seat. I was sure he’d mess it up. After banging and tapping, he came back covered in oil and said it was fixed. Everyone clapped, and he did a silly dance on the bus.
Back at school, Holly asked again if he was my uncle. Seeing him swing his bag with pyjamas hanging out, I laughed, admitted the lie and said yes. Holly said I was lucky, and I suddenly felt the same—he made the trip unforgettable.
24. Why couldn’t the students go camping at first?
A. They had no camping tools.
B. The weather was not good enough.
C. No grown-ups were there to look after them.
25. What happened to Uncle John when he helped Holly Ho?
A. His foot got stuck in a hole.
B. He fell out of the canoe.

26. Why did the writer hide under the seat when Uncle John fixed the bus?
A. He was scared of the loud bang from the bus.
B. He thought Uncle John would make the bus worse.
C. He was too tired and wanted to have a rest.
27. What can we learn about Uncle John?
A. He is childlike and warm-hearted.
B. He is strict and easy-going.
C. He is funny and good-looking.

On a cold night in New York, a policeman was on his patrol (巡逻). The streets lay quiet and nearly empty. As he passed a darkened doorway, he noticed a man standing against the wall with an unlighted cigar.
As the policeman walked up to him, the man spoke up quickly, “It’s all right, sir.” He explained he was just waiting for an old friend. “Twenty years ago,” he began, “my closest friend, Jimmy Wells, and I dined at this very place. That same night, I left for the West to look for wealth and opportunity, while Jimmy chose to remain here in New York. Before we parted, we made a promise—to meet here again twenty years later, no matter how life might change us.”
The policeman listened with quiet interest. The man in the doorway struck (擦) a match and lit his cigar. The light showed his face with a little white scar (疤痕) near his right eye. The man spoke with confidence, even pride, about his success in the West. “Jimmy was the truest friend I ever had,” he added. “I’m certain he will keep his word.”
After a short conversation, the policeman continued on his way.
About twenty minutes later, a tall man in a long overcoat appeared. “Is that you, Bob?” he called out. “Is that you, Jimmy Wells?” came the exciting reply. The two men shook hands warmly and began walking side by side, recalling memories of the past.
Yet, as they stepped into the bright circle of a streetlight, the man from the West suddenly slowed. He studied the tall man’s face with shock and then stepped back. “You’re not Jimmy Wells,” he said sharply. “Twenty years may change a man, but not that much.”
“ ▲ ,” said the tall man. Then he told Bob that he was under arrest (逮捕). Bob, known as “Silky Bob,” was wanted by the police in Chicago.
Before leading him away, the tall man handed Bob a note from Patrolman Wells.
Bob, I was at the promised place on time. When you lit the match, I saw it was the face of the man wanted in Chicago. Somehow, I couldn’t do it myself, so I went around and got another officer to do the job.
JIMMY.

Once, a man caught an old bird. It said, “I’m useless to anyone. What will you get from keeping me? But if you agree to let me go, I’ll tell you three principles (原则) of life.”
The man asked, “What if I set you free, but you don’t tell me anything?”
The bird replied, “I’ll tell you the first one when I’m still in your hands. If you find it valuable, you may then set me free. I’ll share the second when I sit in that tree. The third will be told to you only after I fly into the sky.”
The man agreed, and the bird said, “I have seen people who stay unhappy because they cannot forget the past. And I have seen people full of joy because they forget what is gone and live fully in the present.”
Feeling its value, the man let the bird go. Then the bird sat in the tree and said, “Never believe anything that goes against logic (逻辑) or common sense.” After that, the bird flew into the sky and shouted, “Here’s a piece of news: there were two valuable diamonds (钻石) inside me.”
The man was deeply sad and upset. “Alright, but at least tell me the third principle!” he begged (乞求).
The bird replied, “There is no need now. I told you to forget the past, yet you regretted letting me go. I told you not to believe anything incorrect, yet you believed a bird could have diamonds in it. Only those who understand and follow the first two can learn the third.”

5、 作文范文
Dear Peter,
I’m so glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are interested in our labor practice, I’d love to share my latest eco-project with you.
Last month, our class did waste sorting at school. We used different colored bins—blue for recyclables, green for kitchen waste, red for harmful waste and gray for other waste.
First, our teacher taught us how to sort waste. Then, we collected rubbish around campus. We put plastic and paper into the blue bin, food into the green one, batteries into the red one, and other waste into the gray one. It was a bit hard at first, but soon we got used to it.
This activity helps protect the environment. I hope you can try it in the UK too.
Yours,
Li Hui
