① There may be no place more dangerous than Death Valley (死亡大峡谷). Death Valley is the hottest and driest place in North America.
②Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, the temperature often gets over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
③The weather condition (状况) in Death Valley is terrible, but it is still full of life. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物), 6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren’t all small, either.
④Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives there. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats (更格卢鼠) get the water they need from flowers.

Did you and your family walk on the mountain stairs (步道) in Chongqing before? They are not just steps—they are the memory of the city!
Long ago, from the Tang and Song Dynasties to the 1960s, these stone steps were busy roads. Along them, people carried things up and down. And the stone steps were like the city’s most important roads for business, connecting the river ports (港口) and the city.
From the 1970s to the 1990s, buses and cars became popular, but the steps were still useful. People walked on them to work or school almost every day. Almost everyone in Chongqing had their own “stair story”.
After the 2000s until 2018, fewer people used the old stairs. But they became a symbol of nostalgia. Every stone seemed to tell an old story, carrying the love of the Chongqing people for their hometown.
Since 2019, with care from both the people and the government (政府), these stairs have started a new life. The government renewed the old stones and added lights, chairs, and signs. Artists painted colorful murals (壁画) beside them. Local people also joined in—some planted flowers, others told stories of the old days to visitors.
Now the stairs are lively again. They are part of cultural streets and public spaces where people walk, rest, and take photos. They are no longer just roads—they show how the city is growing while keeping its soul (灵魂).
From busy business roads to daily shortcuts, from old memories to cultural symbols—the mountain stairs are like the DNA of Chongqing. They carry the past and walk toward the future, thanks to everyone who helped them shine again.

36.What is the best title for the passage?

In the picture, a girl is standing on a bamboo pole (竹竿) on the river and dancing beautifully. It’s not a scene from a movie, but a form of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产)—bamboo drifting (独竹漂).
Yang Liu is an inheritor (传承人) of bamboo drifting. She started to learn it from her grandmother when she was 7. As she was weak in health as a child, her grandmother wanted her to get into better shape through this sport. Yang threw herself into practising bamboo drifting all year round, even in the winter cold and summer heat.
“It was common for me to fall into the water when I started practising,” recalled Yang, adding that it took her three years to learn the basic skills of bamboo drifting.
In order to acquire more bamboo drifting skills, Yang had to practise countless difficult movements on a bamboo pole that was 9m in length and 15cm in diameter (直径), and stand all the physical pain that came with it. Through years of hard training, Yang now considers the bamboo pole as her “best friend”.
At one point, inspired by her grandmother, Yang began to combine dance with bamboo drifting. “My grandmother came up with an idea. She said that I had been practicing bamboo drifting since I was a child, so why not try to combine dance with the skill? It might be something different,” the young woman explained.
Yang’s hard work gradually paid off when she was able to perfectly perform dancing with the traditional bamboo drifting skills. “I hope that more people can know about bamboo drifting and enjoy this form of art,” said Yang.

If you think young Chinese are not interested in their country’s culture, a TV program has just showed you are wrong.
Down the ages, both paintings and poetry (诗歌) are records of Chinese civilization (文明). But how do you make them related to the I-have-no-time smartphone and social media youth?
A TV program named China in Poetry and Painting (《诗画中国》) is now airing on CCTV. Millions of young people are interested in the program because it shows the paintings and poems in a creative way.
Every time, five old paintings and several poems on related themes are introduced. With each painting, a performance such as singing, dancing and wushu is staged telling the story behind it.
