It was 2019 when 40-year-old Vichitra Senthil Kumar began to feel a sense of
restlessness,an absence she could not quite name."I always had a sense that something

Understanding everyday conversation requires more than just knowing the literal
meanings of words:it includes understanding the context in which they are spoken. For
example,when it's raining heavily,saying“lovely weather'”is clearly sarcastic(讽刺的).This
ability to work out the real meaning from non-literal language is known as pragmatic (
language ability, which includes understanding sarcasm, metaphors, and white lies.
Evelina Fedorenko,an MIT professor, and her coworkers have found that these
skills can be grouped based on the types of guesses they require.Their study of 800
people identified three main groups of pragmatic skills:guesses based on social traditions
and rules, knowledge of how the physical world works, and explaining differences in
voice, which can indicate stress or emotion.
Past research on language understanding has mainly focused on literal meanings and
注意清点有无漏印或缺
how words fit together. However,Fedorenko notes that context is very important. For
example, the phrase "people are leaving"can mean the party is ending if it's late,or the
party isn't good if it's early.
To explore pragmatic language skills,Fedorenko and Edward Gibson,an MIT
professor of brain and cognitive(认知的)sciences, used an“individual differences'”
approach, studying many people as they perform various tasks. This method helps
determine whether the same brain processes are responsible for different tasks. The
researchers created 20 tasks,including understanding humor,sarcasm,and voice
changes that affect the meaning of the sentence.
若有要及时更换。
Among the first 400 people who took part in the research, the researchers found that
the tasks fell into three groups:social context, general world knowledge, and voice.
Testing another 400 people confirmed these groups.Future work aims to use brain

imaging to link these pragmatic parts to specific brain regions. This research could also
help study people with autism ()who may struggle with social signals, and
compare pragmatic language use across different cultures.
28.Why is pragmatic language ability in conversation important?
A.It improves reading speed greatly.
B.It helps memorize more vocabulary.
C.It focuses on correct grammar rules.
D.It allows understanding beyond words.
29.What did Fedorenko's study find about pragmatic skills?
A.Sarcasm is the hardest to understand.
B.Brain processes are exactly the same.
C.They are based on three types of guesses.
D.People with autism lack world knowledge.

A new project is hoping to save the threatened British swallowtail butterfly by
raising the insects from frozen eggs-a process known as cryopreservation(冷冻保存),
where biological material is stored at extremely low temperatures for future use.
This species, mostly black and cream, has red and blue false eyes on its wings as a
warning to deter natural enemies, greatly increasing its chances of survival in the wild.It is

living in such a limited area puts its future at risk.British swallowtails are classified as

"Although this has been an excellent summer for our native butterflies, the long-term

years, although this has stopped getting worse thanks to protection efforts
Experts from ARU,Jimmy's Farm Wildlife Park and the British wildlife biobank
Nature's SAFE are working together to find new solutions to slow this reduction further.
"Our project will connect fieldwork with lab research to see if we can establish a

dependable method for storing the British swallowtail's genetic material by using its
closely related,but less endangered,European cousin,"explains Helden.
Using a genetically similar European swallowtail species that is kept at Jimmy's
Farm&.Wildlife Park, they will try to raise butterflies from cryopreserved eggs that
were frozen at a temperature of-196C.Their goal is to see how successfully they
develop and reproduce compared with butterflies hatched (from non-frozen eggs.
If it works, the researchers hope to use the method with the British swallowtail,
storing its frozen eggs in case they can be used in future raising and reintroduction
projects."Building capability in this area provides the opportunity to create impact for
food production and protection of variety in nature-the key mix for human and planetary

A.It will continue to reduce.

Should spelling tests be canceled?
Do you have to do regular spelling tests at school? How do you feel about them? For
some pupils(小学生) , they're a common part of school life . 36 They argue that
these tests are unfair to students and put too much pressure on them. On the other hand,
some people think that they're an effective way of keeping track of students'progress.
What's your view?Should spelling tests be canceled?
Yes—they create too much pressure.
Pupils should be taught to enjoy words and reading at a young ae rather than
focusing on tests, which put them under pressure and can be stressful. 37 A lot of
writing is done on computers and there are tools such as spell-checkers that people can
use to make sure they're spelling words correctly, so putting pupils through spelling tests
is unnecessary. Plus, some children with conditions such as dyslexia(读写障碍) can
struggle with spelling, so tests might not be fair. 38
No—spelling tests still have a role to play.
39 It can make sure that people understand each other correctly. Even in the
digital world, people often write to each other by email. Good spelling can be necessary
for making sure people are n't misunderstood—and spell-checkers are n't always the
answer. While these tools are useful, they are n't always available and they can certainly
fail, so it's important not to depend only on technology . 40 Moreover, doing well in
a spelling test feels good. Spelling is related to other skills such as reading and writing,
so it makes sense for teachers to check how well their students are performing.
A.Spelling tests damage children's confidence.
B.Besides, spelling is becoming less important.
C.Proper spelling is important for communication.
D.However, some people think it's time to move on.
E.Improving spelling is the first step to doing well in your studies.
F.Actually, in the computer age, spelling remains an important part.
G.There should be more inclusive ways of measuring progress with spelling.

some carrots, and a package of discount chicken. His suit coat was old and worn-out,but
his pants and shirt were neatly ironed ()I agreed to give him a ride.
